Hi there
I'm looking for a rooting method for a HTC One m8 handset which has a broken power button.
I have figured out that by enabling usb debugging and running the sdk's 'adb-reboot' command allows me to effectively 'jump-start' the handset from an off/charging state however I'm now looking to move forwards with this and root the device.
All the methods I've watched videos on so far for example hasoon's all in one toolkit requires me to confirm the 'root' on the handset selecting 'ok' with volume up/down with the power button to confirm.
Obviously with no functioning power button these methods won't work for me...
I'm looking for a rooting method that will fully complete without any power button confirmation on the handset if at all possible.
Perhaps this just isn't going to happen for me and I just need to be grateful that I've managed to resurrect a handset consigned to the grave?!
You need to fix your power button. Otherwise you will face many issues, other than this one.
If warranty isn't an option, it should be inexpensive to have it fixed. Or try yourself.

Not under warranty and yeah I kinda know this but since discovering the jump start I thought I might be able to get away with not fixing it if possible, the button was 'perma-pressing' and after failing to free it with lube spray I dug the power button out with a stanley blade so it probably needs the whole new floating circuit and button, anyway we digress...
Possible to perform an unattended root?
All you can do is use some sort of temp root app, but I'm not aware of any that work with the M8.
Other than that, I'm not sure. You need the button to navigate the bootloader menu. So I'm stumped.

Can a usb input device be used to navigate the bootloader?
Don't think so. But I've never tried, so just my guess.

You could use sunshine to s-off which once you do that I believe you can use a command to unlock without HTCdev if you are on 4.4.4 sunshine might not work but its worth a shot just type in therootninja in google on your phone but you will have to pay 25$ but if it won't work it will tell you long before you pay

Thanks but sunshine can't find the su binary presumably as I'm on 4.4.4 as per your comment/he documentation, guess I'll have to wait on an update to sunshine. Good information, interesting stuff & yeah worth a shot...
I don't suppose there's any fastboot commands that'll let me navigate the bootloader?

Yeah but accessing the bootloader isn't the problem, it's navigating therein. Seems like I need something like rootninja's sunshhine rooting for dummies package unless there's another method such as remapping the power button to one of the volume buttons without root and I don't think that's possible.
Thanks for your input nonetheless!
Cheers for all the help guys, need to get my power button fixed right enough it's too restrictive.
feel free to close this thread..

please help me
I just need to know plain and simple if i do this:
1) root my phone.. (i don't know how to if i will get 1.85 in my phone. I would always want to keep it stock version without unlocking bootloader so please anyone provide me files to just run a batch file in debugging mode that will make me get root please?!)
2)then going in /system/build.prop
Add: qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 to the bottom of the file
and Reboot .
this will remove the three dots menu option right?! (as i just need this to be removed only)
but the three main capacitive buttons after all this, will they work all normally as they do, like back button will make app go back, middle home button will work same as home button and last button i guess it opens recent apps? and it will work the same way aswell?!
and as if the three dots menu button will be disabled/gone... so when playing game and i would want to exit it, then by just pressing back or home key will do and close the app or will it still be running in backgroud?! or what should i be doing then?!
please help so i be prepared i promise to thanks many posts who would help
waiting impatiently for replies ...
In the new software base (2.05) that should be official in some weeks it is disabled by default...you can read about it in this thread

You can already instal a custom ROM and do that if you want (because there are already ROMs with this new software base) ... but if you dont want to root your device (so you dont loose your warranty) it will be fixed in the next update
The menu button isn't that much of an issue, but fair play on HTC giving us the option to change it

yes u are right i just read this: new solution for the 3Dot menu! we can change it on the fly in the display options, with option for long hold recent apps for menu or vice versa or the 3dot menu, display menu is now called display gestures and buttons
and there would be changes with that, and really should be... so will update when the stock update will come
sir i want to root my phone, but dont want to unlock the bootloader.. So please can u tell me the files or thread if there is a way by which i can root my phone easily by being in debugging mode and running a batch file, which will make phone restart several times and in end i get root?! so i be able to remove bloatwares

nevermind ill keep the phone unrooted then and will remove some apps from it which can just be uninstalled normally if possible.... and as its "quadcore" wow my pc isnt quadcore lol !! so i don't think so i would need that....
and further update will give options to diable three dots stuff, etc
so that's pretty much it...
but just one thing here's a thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424

My phone's screen is stuck at opening htc logo. I never rooted it - shall I just flash it with standard stock rom? Would you please be so kind to point me in the right direction? Bless...

Try booting without the sd card.
How old is the phone? What happened / did you do (if such is the case) for it to get like that? Etc.....

Ok, enable USB debugging, plug the phone to the PC and then open a CMD ON the PC and type adb reboot-bootloader and once in bootloader type fastboot getvar all. You Need to post the INFOcidnum and INFOmain

Yes, from fastboot, plug the phone (You will see fastboot USB in red) type: fastboot getvar all
sounds like a boot loop?
try removing the battery, once you have done that re boot into boot loader from there you should see an option for recovery.you may want to do a full wipe and re flash the rom.:silly: keep in mind the initial flash normally will take the longest, best to leave it be for a few minutes while the phone adjust to the new settings, that sometimes will seem like you may have an issue, but patience most times is all that is needed.hope this helps.

Well....
1- over a year old bought refurbished.
2- he never rooted. We could assume that it is s-off from the previous owner but all of us failed to ask that question making another assumption that he isn't s-off.
3- he did a factory reset which didn't work (whatever that means with an s-on device / with an s-off device it really messes things up).
4- glevitan is here. If he doesn't know how to fix it (and from the few active members that tend to lend a hand in these type of posts) there may be just a handful who could help out. Hence, the OP is in good hands.
5- when someone messes up their phone without knowing what happened nor how to fix it, you need to give more detailed instructions on how to get it done.
6- I'm guessing that the info glevitan asked for is to find the correct ruu for the member to flash and to get his phone back to working conditions. If that doesn't work, chances are it's a hardware problem.

Bullet point, impressive. now a refurb with s off would mean a root from a previous owner?
"S-ON, which means it blocks you from flashing radio images — the code that manages your data, Wi-Fi and GPS connections. Switching your phone to S-OFF lets you flash new radios. Rooting doesn’t require S-OFF, but many rooting tools will give you S-OFF in addition to root access" So hince my question if attempting to flash a rom ,it would be a safe bet he would be rooted, because without it he would have no admin access, recovery or superser access and would not be able to complete the flash process.a factory reset would normally on a stock rom not result in a loss of the entire stock rom but only a loss off data i.e contacts apps etc. and with these things in mind it would seem to be a safe to assume its a hardware issue or a rooted refurb phone from a previous owner in a bootloop becauce a factory reset there would wipe everything?

Factory reset resets the phone to it's "as fabricated"-condition, wich means it wipes user data and cache on the phone. With or without root the procedure is the same and should usally not affect /system or /boot.
So we have to find out, if the phone is S-On/S-Off (phosphen, more information on the topic can be read for example here, second post).

BTW, the only solution in his case is to flash the OEM RUU or make a goldcard and flash an unbranded rom. With no s-off there´s no other way.

See first of all, If it's that necessary to make bootloader relock and going for S-OFF than here's a trick.
Site Name: http://www.mgyun.com/
Go to this site click on Brush Masters(Rounded Monitor Icon) somewhere on right lower side on the site. Install software,it's in chinese but it's completely safe,i've personally downloaded it so many times so kinda trust worth site.
Once installation complete open the software and click on Setting icon(last on first column) then numerous icons you will see so in order to make it shorter and easier for you "2nd row and 2nd icon" which looks like "open lock" click on it wait until software downloads proper driver for your device, once it completed your device will be in final stage where you'll be prompted either choose Yes or NO and Press Power Button once that done, your device will be restarted and you'll be relocked again.
Thanks.

Dear Community,
My HTC10 is apparently dead but I trust that someone could have a great idea.
How it happened:
1st my config
- S Off
- Unlocked BL
- Running custom Rom - MHD latest version
- Custom kernel from tbalden
So the phone was at 65% of battery.
I rebooted in download mode to check some info (CID and version Mailly).
Then selected System Reboot.
It rebooted fine but then it became impossible to type in my pin code.
So tried to reboot with hardware combination... No sucess...
Then pressed and hold vol up + power for a while then the button at the bottom of the screen blinked 5 times then nothing.
Now it is not responding at all and even when I plug it to charger the led remains off.
I have also tried adb devices from pc... No success

If it's not booting to any mode with all button configurations than we can't suggest or do anything.
Let it charge with the wallcharger for a while and try to power it up, connect the phone to a laptop and try to power it up with various button combinations.
See if the phone is in the devices list of the laptop/pc when you connect it, if you see a Qualcomm device it's probably bricked.

Anyway... Happy New year to you all
Hi community,
I have contacted HTC support and sent them my device, their diagnosis was a mainboard issue.
They have swapped the motherboard and sent it back.
I am sooooo happy.[emoji16]
They have also changed the entire screen...
So pleased with HTC support.

Now I have to redo all steps to Unlock BL/Root/S-Off...etc..as I am back to 100% pure stock.
But first... Reading activities as these steps have been done like 1.5 year ago and do not remember exactly what to be done in which order.
Currently my system notification is pushing me to update to Oreo but I have read that it is preferable to root and other while in N as in O it will not be possible (yet).
Thanks for your support

I can't empirically speak for unlocking the bootloader Oreo since I already unlocked it a long time ago but, unless the process has changed on htc's site, it's still the same.
I can't speak for S-Off; read the Sunshine docs; I can't imagine that changing either. (My _opinion_ is that if one doesn't have a specific need for S-Off, then one only gains the risk of bricking the device, as evidenced by the numerous, redundant oopsie threads that would have been prevented by remaining S-On. This is why htc has S-On.)
I can say from experience that installing TWRP, Magisk, rooting all work the same post-Oreo update. (RUU Nougat, accept OTA/update apps, FDR, follow TWRP/Magisk instructions, install F-Droid/AdAway, clear Dalvik//cache, install everything else, profit). Give battery estimations a few days to get more accurate before thinking, "Oreo battery sucks!". The FDR and clearing caches is necessary to remedy bugginess and sluggishness, which would have also averted the numerous "my phone doesn't work right/is slow" posts.

Thanks for feedback,
One of my aim is also to change CID (as it came back with the carrier one ORANG219, and I would prefer to 11111111 or HTC__001
But you are right S-Off could be risky if further actions are not made with caution
Hey guys, I have a Pixel 3 XL that I am trying to repair because it's touchscreen doesn't work, however while doing the repair I found that it does not have the correct firmware and I cannot install the correct one. When in fastboot mode, it shows the product revision as "crosshatch MP1.0(ROW)" however when I go to recovery, at the top it says: "google/blueline/blueline" . I can only flash Pixel 3(blueline) firmware to it through adb sideload since the bootloader is locked. When I try to flash crosshatch firmware through adb sideload it makes it about 50% before failing due to inaccurate signature. Does anyone know how I can correctly return it's firmware to crosshatch. The touchscreen doesn't work due to I assume it having the wrong firmware. Any help is appreciated thanks .
Try unlocking bootloader first and clean up everything that is data and system and reboot back to bootloader and use flash-all script from the rim downloaded and let us know what happened.

Unfortunately I have no way to unlock the bootloader since the touchscreen doesn't work. I've been flashing through adb sideload as flash-all wasn't available to me due to the locked bootloader.

Just a question why do you need a functioning digitizer to access or interact with the bootloader? Volume buttons are used to cycle through options and the power button confirms the highlighted option in both low level modes.

Need to toggle it in dev options I think. I guess you could attach a pointer device?

Ah so you have access to the Android system locally, then if you could try attaching a mouse that should reverse the current situation you are in.

I attached a mouse and was able to navigate around, however I am still not able to unlock the bootloader and the Pixel 3 OS crashes a lot on the Pixel 3 XL.

I work at a tech repair site that buys phones and sells them online refurbished. I do software repair there and came across this phone while working there and it has me stumped. I think it might just be bad.

Well if there is any chance you go flash the bootloader separately via fastboot try that. If that is successful then maybe the flash-all script could work
May be power off phone and hold volume down and connect to PC with cable and it should directly go to bootloader, make sure to download Google Android tools before hand and cmd to that folder and then u can unlock bootloader, let us know.
