Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to share something new I found out about android today, and probably a feature in ICS and JB only. Its not mentioned often but its simply being able to boot into Safe Mode on Android just like how you would enter Safe Mode in MS Windows.
Sometimes we tend to download and install 3rd party apps that we may know little of, and which may cause sudden Force Closures or freeze the phone a few seconds after booting is completed. Now, instead of having to format and reflash the ROM and go through all the trouble. Why not just enter into the Safe Mode which effectively disables all 3rd party apps including ones that are the main culprit? Once in the Safe Mode you may simply uninstall the app that's causing trouble and restart.
There are 2 methods that I know of to enter Safe Mode:
Method 1: (This method doesn't seem to work in Samsung roms)
1. Just after Normal boot is complete, immediately Hold Power Button
2. When Power menu Opens up, tap and hold the Reboot for a few seconds
3. You will get a dialogue asking you to reboot into Safe Mode
4. Hit Yes and your good to go!
5. To exit Safe Mode simply reboot your phone normally.
Method 2:
1. Fully turn OFF the device
2. Hold both Up and Down Volume keys and simultaneously press the Power Button to boot.
3. Release Power Button but keep holding Volume keys until boot is complete.
4. To exit Safe Mode simply reboot your phone normally.
Its that easy! Now a few of you may already know this so hats off to you. But majority of the users here dont, so pat your back for learning something new today

what is safe mode on desire?

Hello
dose any one know what safemode is on desire. To start it you need to reboot you phone and on the boot animation you need to spam the track ball until the boot animation reboot and then spam meny key until the phone start.
P.S is a gray zone and text safe mode in it when it start in safe mode.
the only thing I noticed was the A2SD wasn't working
I'd imagine it's something like regular recovery mode on Linux. But if it's anything like that it should have full root permissions.

Actually, you just need to power up your phone whilst holding down menu, and keep it held down until the phone has fully booted.
When in safe mode, the phone will not run any 3rd party applications or widgets - so, if you've installed an app that is causing problems (e.g. reboots on boot up), you can boot up in safe mode and uninstall it.

Dave

Appareantly there is a safe mode, you are right. But it is everywhere described differently.(for the same device)
I tried your key combination: Volume Buttons while booting up -> normal boot up
I have read it works on some with the menu-button. You have to press it as soon as it starts to light up.

vol down + menu + power : download mode
menu + power : recovery
after reading that link, I think there's no safe mode for this SGW..

I confirm. On cm9 after the boot animation a watermark on the left bottom corner saying "Safe mode"
I'm in it now and there isn't such a great change between this and normal mode

But nothing much. Unlike windows you cant just go into the cmd promt and find the problem so you can fix it. If windows fails and asks for safe mode it can be fixed unless a major failer happened. Our phone pretty much fixes itself. (unless you brick it)

[Q] stuck in safe mode

I have sprint Galaxy s3 with jelly bean rooted. On new years eve I installed a 3rd party app from the market to see if I could get a hot spot. don't even remember the name of the app. I ran it and it locked my phone up. I pulled the battery and when it rebooted it was in safe mode. In safe mode I uninstalled the program but it did not help me at all. Any time I reboot it goes right to safe mode. I have tried several times to get to download mode and recovery mode and have not been able to reach either. The phone works fine in safe mode I could even do a factory reset and with no problem the phone resets and goes right back to safe mode when it boots up to the new factory set up. No 3rd party apps are seen and no download mode or recovery mode can be obtained in the usual ways we use to boot to them. I am stumped any ideas from anyone.
Try use kies!
Hi. You can try this method.
1- get or make a usb jig
0r
2- turn off your s2. Pull the batt out for 10 sec and press on button w/out inserting the batt.
After doing that, try to boot into download mode. Sometimes yhe phone need some rest, juat pull out the batt for 5-10min and retry. I suggest that you try to enter recovery mode before heading to download mode..

Yeah, i'm at a loss, was gonna say if you can get into DL mode, then could odin to sock. I'm not sure of any other way to get around it and force that puppy to boot back into normal land.
Try this.. Power off phone... Restart, once you see Samsung logo, Press the Menu capacitive button repeatedly. (read this is how to get into safemode) maybe it'll work to reboot you OUT of safe mode. (Note i'm just searching the web to see if i can find anything) And i did pull that for a i9300 International, but it may work for this one as well.. (just a shot)
Seen another with similar issue, Pull SD and battery for 10 min.. When rebooted, went back to normal. Again these are all shots in the dark..

You have the root, why not use it instead of sudo-randomly smashing keys *Grin* ? If you don't have a Terminal app install one of those, su to root (answer to allow root when Superuser/SuperSu asks you) then run "reboot recovery". When/If recovery comes up wipe Cache, Dalvik-Cache, fix permissions and so forth, then try to restart into the system and see if "Safe Mode" crap persist.
I had my phone come up in Safe Mode one time, can't remember what I played with to even trigger it though. If this doesn't work, you can use something like Rom Toolbox Pro, or another fun tool to wipe the caches while the phone is up in Safe Mode.
Happy Flashing,

That is the one thing that has me questioning. The volume button seems to move freely however; I have tried volume button when booted up in safe mode and the volume down does not move. the volume up moved the volume control up. although when pressing vol. down when trying to go do download mode it boots to download warning screen. unless it is stuck on internally. I don't know, cause the button moves freely.
Mine was in safe mode once. All I did is reboot it and mine went away.

Thanks this d root is no longerdid help me make my decision . I am taking the phone to sprint store. by downloading and using keys it seems that the software does not cause my problem. I hooked up to kies and did a complete firmware upgrade. Although there is no upgrade it still reloaded jellybean. It did a complete restore though and root is no longer present. Super user is gone. But I still have the same safe mode issues. I am guessing that this is a hardware problem probably the volume key. I feel ok with taking it to sprint since root is gone. who knows maybe i'll get a new one. Thanks to all who helped I surely appreciate it.

If the advice above didn´t work (nothing happened when pressing the usual VOL down - home - power etc), this is how I managed:
I tried booting around 25 times with the power button released at different times. Did not work.
Tried to insert battery when pressing the 3 buttons. Did not work.
I let the battery run completely empty. Started charging the phone and pressing the 3 buttons. Did not work.
I charged the phone full (with booting the whole time....needed to put it somewhere quiet). After estimating it was full, I pulled out the battery, preparing to send it to mobiletechvideos.com (they saved me before). After a few hours I wanted to see the error message so I could write them. When I inserted the battery, I got the regular download mode! Nowthen, would I dare to boot it since I am not really sure what to flash to my phone?
I rebooted, and now the phone is back to normal. OTOH, I will not try to flash CWM/TWRP again, so goodbye custom roms (Omega )

This happens...
This happens to almost everyone at some point of time. There is no need to worry as you just need to flash recovery like TWRP or CWM. To shed some light on this issue... boot loops mainly happen when you uses the incorrect version of software with your ROM or stock firmware. By using youtube you can look at the videos of your phone model and find the recovery version number needed.
For anyone who has a Note 3 T-Mobile phone who is still stuck! I am willing to make a video to show how to fix this and provide all the firmware/version numbers + links in one bundled location to make it easier.
ALL PHONES ARE VERY specific... ONLY USE THE CORRECT FIRMWARE FOR YOUR MODEL PHONE
Again, if you have a Samsung Note 3 T-Mobile, model number SM-N900T and are still lost. Let me know so I can shot a video and bundle files needed.

Don't be scared by this... just choose the correct versions before blindly trying to install a ROM. Also, only use links from main sources if you dont fell like auditing the code!
Hi guys, sorry for might be late about helping you now years later... But recently I've found something interesting about fixing this issue.
*****
Fix: (100% working in Galaxy Grand Prime SM-G530H)
UPDATED: More detailed info!
# Before flashed Recovery or Root:
1. Root device using Odin or any other rooting known workaround.
2. Backup Recovery (optional), and Kernel using Rashr (available on PlayStore).
3. Flash Custom Recovery (TWRP), using Odin PC software or TWRP android app.
4. Flash backed-up Kernel.img file to Boot partition using TWRP install section.
5. Reboot system (It may take a few time to boot)
# After flashed Recovery or Root: (accidentally or without knowing)
1. Search online and download your exact Phone Stock Kernel.
2. Follow *before flashed* above ↑ from 3rd.
Bonus info:
Even after flashing TWRP, you might be able to Boot device yet, by going to TWRP → Advanced → Reboot system. (It bypass bootlooping to Recovery, while: “Set Warranty Bit : Recovery”).
That's all! Try at your own, then share it!

Recovery-mode only, is there any hope?

[SOLVED] Download mode can't be removed, I had to try all dat long but I finally could boot into it.
Hi,
So... I had a working Samsung Galaxy S9 (SM-G960F/DS) running Lineage OS yesterday. I noticed something wrong related to the mobile network in my country (FR) and decided to flash the correct stock firmware matching the country code XEF before doing a full LOS reinstall.
Fast-forward 20hrs of download, I perform the flash operation this morning using heimdall(1) and reboot.
Now, the phone bootloops. I can't get into download mode as usual, and the only thing that is available is the stock recovery mode that allows:
apply update from adb
apply update from sdcard
wipe data
wipe cache
mount /system
view logs
run graphics test
I have a working all-countries firmware archive that contains the one that was working previously (minus the mobile network problem). But since I don't have download-mode anymore I can't install it. I tried adb sideload (which is available via the "apply update from adb" option), wipe data/cache to no avail.
Is that hard-brick? Did you ever experience a similar situation? I think there's no way out of this but any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks again!
You should be able to get into Download Mode (Vol Down & Bixby & Power)
Keep trying, try keeping hold of the button combo until after the phone reboots twice hopefully the second time into download mode
Download mode has nothing to do with firmware or recovery that has been flashed, and if you can enter recovery mode, it doesn't sound like a hardware problem either
And use a Windows machine & ODIN 3.13.1 to flash stock
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work, i tried many tiimes and I usually can do that very easily. It seems flashing the corrupted images wiped it out.

Impossible as it is not part of the firmware, nor can be touched by firmware, it is part of the hardware (Think BIOS vs OS)
You can even 100% wipe all internal storage clean so there is no OS at all and download mode will still work fine
Keep trying
Okay I guess it's possible that the download mode is still there but I can't reach it.
I've been trying hundreds of times every combination I can think of (including Home + Vol Down + Power that used to work).
Any alternative way to trigger the download mode ?
How are you trying Home? There is no physical home button
The button combo is Vol Down & Bixby & Power from a powered off state
Keep a hold of all 3 until it hits the Warning screen, then hit Vol Up to enter Download mode
No other way to access it that I know of, USB Jig hasn't worked since a few models back
Have you tried factory resetting from inside recovery? Unless you used CSC during the stock firmware flash, that could be a reason for the bootloop

Yeah sorry, speaking of the Bixby button.

That's what used to work indeed. I did that many times before.

I tried factory reset/wipe cache from inside the recovery and yes, I used CSC.

Maybe the issue is with the Volume Down button, does it work inside of recovery for navigating the menu ?
What happens when you try entering Download mode? It just tries to boot as if you didn't press anything?
Only other thing is to hold Volume Down & Bixby, then connect the USB cable to power it on (instead of using the power button)

The volume down button works perfectly in the recovery menu.
When I try entering download mode normally while device is powered down, the phone never turns on.
When I try to hold the buttons during the interval of the boot loop, it goes to recovery (yes, even with volume down, not volume up).
The other technique you mentioned also went to recovery.

Impossible as it is not part of the firmware, nor can be touched by firmware, it is part of the hardware (Think BIOS vs OS)

BINGO! I kept trying. Did this all day literally hundreds of times.
And it just worked.
I didn't change the way I do it, I think there was some nasty timing going on with the boot loop.
Anyways... lesson learnt: download mode is indeed hardcoded. What a day!
Thanks for being so helpful!
