[Q] Flashlight toggle from lockscreen or with screen off? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my S3 I was able to turn on the setting that allowed a long press of Vol Up to turn on the camera LED as a flashlight, and long press Vol Down would turn it off. The hidden menu that allowed that setting on the S3 doesn't seem to exist on the Note 4.
So, I loaded an app called QuickClick and set it to turn on/off the flashlight when Vol Down was double-tapped if the screen was already off. It works great for that purpose, but it is draining the battery twice as fast as the next highest app.
Can anyone recommend a different app or tool or hidden menu option somewhere that will allow me to access the torch from either screen off or from the stock lockscreen? (I use the Fingerprint Scanner and don't want to go back to WidgetLocker.)
Thank you!

i want a flashlight toggle in notification quick toggles

+1 on that question, I am also curious if someone has come across a flashlight shortcut to either bind to the center button or some key so that it can be toggled while the phone is locked. I came from a rooted s4 and used it very often.

On my Note 3, I was able to use volume up when my screen was off to turn on the flashlight, and I used it quite often. Now I have a Developer Edition Note 4 that is rooted and using Xposed modules. In Wanam Xposed, there's a lockscreen category for "Hidden flashlight settings" where you should be able to set it to work the same way (volume up when screen is off turns on flashlight), but nothing happens when you try to use that setting. So, unless I figure something else out (or someone smarter than me finds a way), it looks like I'm out of luck on this one.
EDIT: If you are rooted, the Xposed Torch module works for the Note 4 -- it enables you to turn on the flashlight by long-pressing volume up, or long-pressing the Home button, while the screen is off.

Update!
I've been working with Tasker and trying to get all of my old Profiles recreated more cleanly for my Note 4 instead of just importing my original ones that were created on my Droid X... Decided to try playing with different ways of toggling the flashlight from inside Tasker since I already know it will be running and it doesn't have the crazy battery drain.
I wasn't getting a reliable torch on/off with gestures or shaking, so this is what I ended up doing:
Profile "Torch" has 3 conditions:
Display State Off
Proximity Sensor On
Orientation Right Side
Task "Torch" has 2 actions:
Toggle TeslaLED
Vibrate (just so I know it's working without blinding myself or so I know it happened if it somehow manages to go off in my pocket)
Now if my phone display is off and it's on its right side, I just put my finger over the proximity sensor up near the forward facing camera and the rear camera's LED turns on/off. Since my phone should never be laying on its right side naturally, it shouldn't trigger accidentally.

Update to the update...
Looks like Android System keeps killing the proximity sensor. My torch works fine for a while after I play in Tasker, but then it stops coming on. Need a new option.

Disable autoRotate = Screen flips backwards!

Ok, So on my one x(and a second one), when i disable auto rotate, the screen flips over (so the notifaction bar is at the bottom near the buttons)
- this happens on both my phones, from 2 different networks
Notice the auto rotate widget, when it is on / normal the screen looks fine
but when i disable auto rotate it goes backwards!

Could anyone else try disabling auto rotate via the htc widget and see if the same thing happens?
-G-sensor calibration does not help
-if you power of the phone, then turn it back on while the screen is upside down, it comes on the right way, but flips backwards when you re-enable auto rotate
could anyone please try disabling auto rotate on the phone and see if the same thing happens?
thanks
Disabled it just now, no problem whatsoever

I have the same problem!
It just happened one day and it's been the same since... even after multiple OTA-updates.
I have to have auto-rotate enabled for it to be normal.
Has anyone found a solution for this?
I can't remember how mime got fixed!! It was ether the .29 its update or when I rooted and put a custom ROM(+kernel and everything) on it, so It is definately not a hardware issue
Mine stopped after a reset. Well I also rooted it then, but still at the standard rom.

Auto rotation problem

For the past few months, I have found my phone to be kinda relunctant to switch between landscape and portrait mode when tilted.
It's now come to a point that if it ever switches to landscape, it mostly never comes back to portrait when switched back.
The weird part is that if I use a "bubble level" app, the level switches mode instantly when tilted horizontally or vertically.
Is there some kind of calibration that can be done or anything?
For the record, I'm running stock Kik Kat 4.4.2 NE6 + root + xposed + wanam and phone rotation is ticked in Settings --> Display.
Thanks!

Already tried that, without any hope of it succeeding, and it doesn't help at all.
There may be apps that can help. I seem to remember there being some sort of calibration you could do by moving the device in s figure 8.
This won't calibrate it, but open the dialer and enter *#0*#, then tap the Sensors button in the middle. At the top you can press image button to show an arrow on the screen. If working correctly it will point up no matter how you turn the device.
If you cant find a way to calibrate it, try reflashing your firmware and factory resetting.

Cool tip, thanks!
However, guess I'll have to reflash and factory reset as sensors seem to be working fine in *#0*# --> Sensor --> Image Test screen.
On a side note, there's no arrow in the "Image Test" screen... only x, y and z angle values. And yes I did clic on the "Image test" button.
Might be a little different as I am familiar with the T999.
You can also try *#7353#, then choose accelerometer. If I remember right it goes right to the test screen with the arrow. Though it may just show the same thing you got before on yours.
---------- Post added at 01:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:19 PM ----------
And yeah, if it seems to work ok in apps, and the built in test, its more likely to be a software issue. After the firmware flash, you can try it before factory resetting if you like. But if its still having problems do the reset and test rotation before installing/restoring your apps and data.
*#7353# - - > Accelerometer did bring up the arrow you were referring to.
The arrow switches within a fraction of a second following a tilt, so it's most likely software related.
Thanks for you help Doc!
No problem! Hope the firmware flash or reset helps!

Sometimes music starts playing by itself when unlocking screen

I am on stock rom, rooted.
Sometimes, AFTER unlocking screen the music (google music) will start playing, have no idea what triggers it. Initially I had music gestures (on lock screen) enabled but disabled it since. Still happens.
Any idea how to fix this? thanks

Hey Cartman,
You may have music playback configured on button presses like pressing power button twice, pressing volume button twice etc.. Can you check in the Customizations and Buttons menu in settings if you have any such gesture settings present?
I have enabled none but I too, sometimes see the music player in the status bar. Annoying.

Thanks for your answer Karachi,
The behavior of the capacitive buttons is unchanged, didn't assign any other functionalities in there. The only thing I changed is swap the buttons (back/recent apps), more a la samsung. I have lockscreen gestures but removed the music gesture. There is no music-related anything under Customizations > Status bar; nothing peculiar under Buttons either.
One other thing, when the music starts, the google music app starts by itself and also playback starts. The app will start in the foreground even. That's strange. If I were to press by mistake the google music icon (which by the way, I have removed from the Nova launcher desktop since), the music won't just start rightaway, I would also have to press the play button.

Weird, really.
Are you using fingerprint to unlock? Swipe? Pattern? Have you tried changing that?..
I must warn you, if you are using fingerprint to unlock and you change the screen lock type, you will lose your fingerprint data. This is stupid!

Indeed, using the fingerprint only. I doubt it's the fp though, or I'd try something else instead first.
Thanks, I didn't know there was a 2 finger swipe to start music
I had the same issue but skipped that option

Always-on display rotation

hello,
Is there any way to rotate the always-on display to landscape mode ?
It was available on S10 i believe but i can not find it on Note 10+.
Having the case spigen crystal clear with stand included (essential S), it would be nice to be able to read the darn clock ...
Thanks !
EDIT : sorry, found it !
We have to activate the rotation of home screen in landscape mode first, and then the option portrait/landscape will appear in always-on display menu (in clock style menu).
Replying to my own thread, because it does not requires to enable landscape mode on home screen.
Just have to go to Always on display parameters -> Details -> Click on "Always on display" (left from its button on/off) and then scroll down for rotation option landscape or portrait...
It is sad that it does not detect automatically landscape/portrait. The setting must be changed manually everytime
yes i am bummed beacuse the AOD does not detect the orientation automatically

???
Double tap the AOD clock to bring up settings...
The point the OP is trying to make is you shouldn't have to bring up the settings to rotate the AOD clock.
This is something that Samsung needs to address in the next update as I'm sure it wouldn't be just the N10+ that has this issue...
If it was automatic it probably eat excessive power. Not a big deal.
As is it eats about 1% an hour of the battery when running at night at minimum brightness.
Or it could simply be the rapid box of gerbils at Samsung overlooked it along with the all the other flagship goodies they forgot. This being the least of them.

Yes… having the AOD to autorotate would be great indeed…

This is nit picking, I think. You even have auto brightness.
Likely due to having it would cause excessive power consumption.
Large sections of the mobo/chipsets are asleep with the screen off. It may be simply impossible to do due to hardware without severe consequences to power consumption.
You can alter firmware but not the physical hardware... not everything is adjustable!
Pick your poison, portrait or landscape
Does anyone know if the setting can be accessed through something like tasker or Macrodroid? I checked the Macrodroid list of 'System', 'Secure', and 'Global' settings and didn't see anything that might be the orientation?

[GUIDE] Make a stock "screen off" shortcut that works with Fingerprint/SmartLock

[GUIDE] Make a stock "screen off" shortcut that works with Fingerprint/SmartLock
Hi!
One thing I've always thought that was missing in this phone was a "screen off" shortcut that so many brands currently have.
Third party options have caveats. Using device administrator locks the phone but disables fingerprint or smar lock, using timeout often didn't work well as the black screen sometimes continued to show the status bar or was responsive to touches during the timeout.
This method shuts the screen off as if you pressed the power button using bixby.
To do this:
- Open Bixby - Click the 3 dotted menu - Quick commands - My commands - Click on the plus icon to add a command.
-Name it as you wish in any language, the name you give it here is the name of the shortcut on the home screen.
-Then in what bixby does choose "type a command" and write "Screen off".
- Save it
- Then click the 3 dotted menu in front of the command you've just made and choose Add to Home Screen.
That's it, enjoy!

Great
doubleHome
There's an even easier way to do this and it works anywhere on the phone, not just the launcher shortcut. I've been using this utility called doubleHome from Jawomo since my S8+ days, and it lets me double tap the home button from anywhere to turn off and lock the screen. Just installed it on my new A50, still works great!
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-doublehome-double-tap-home-to-off-t3611220
It's no longer on the Play Store or even supported anymore, but the above thread has one of the last versions (v1.30). There was one last update to v1.31, which is the one I've always used since I originally updated it through the Play Store before it was pulled. This last version can easily be found with a Google search.
There are a few miscellaneous options to customize its behavior and some Pro features that were unlockable at one point but no longer. One little "glitch" if you can even call it that, the status bar will stay on for a second or two before turning off like the rest of the screen. This didn't used to happen until Oreo and later, but it's not a big deal at all - actually looks kinda neat.
Give it a try!
