[Q] Anyone Else Still Hanging Onto Their Vision? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I absolutely love it and refuse to let go of this thing until I find a newer Android with a REAL keyboard, especially if it's another Canadian phone that my carrier has never had before.
Unfortunately, my manager wants me to have access to my emails from my personal phone (doesn't want to pay for a corporate iPhone for me -- not like I even want one anyway) and I can't get my corporate email on my DZ because it's only running Android 4.0 right now and I'd need at least 4.3 for it to run Good for Enterprise, so that I can get corporate email. I've done searches here and on the internet for a custom ROM with that version, but I can't seem to find one (it's driving me mad and I'm spending WAY too much time on this).
Anyone know where they can point me to one? I don't need a whole bunch of bells & whistles.
Many thanks!
Debbie

You'll find just about every ROM for this device in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348266
Best of luck!

demkantor, that thread is absolutely fantastic. Many thanks for that! I'm sure that I'll be going back to that for as long as I can hold onto my Vision.
I've known this forum to be indispensable for many, many years now (since my Kaiser), but it can be quite difficult to find what you're looking for due to the wealth of information, most of which you didn't even know that you needed until you happen to stumble upon it. Searching for topics can be a daunting task as well due to the many acronyms & abbreviations that people tend to use and that thread looks like most of what I need, all wrapped up in a pretty package with a big bow.... THANK YOU AGAIN!
EDIT: It seems that there aren't any Sense Roms with Jelly Bean & Kit Kat. Is that true? I've really liked Sense and the simplicity of syncing my data with my computer using HTC Sync. Is there another brand of software that will sync as easily & completely?
Thanks,
Debbie

Strongly thinking about buying the tilt2

I've been on some other forums wondering what phone to buy, and it seems the tilt2 is the best for me. That being said, I'm not totally sold on it. For you people who've had it long enough, would you recommend it? I'm committed to learning about the best ROM to install over it, so I'm going to try to get away from as many freezes as possible. Of course, I was recommended to *this* wonderful site!
Does anyone have a good place to start for learning on here? There's a freakton of information on here, and I have no problem reading through lots of info, but I don't know where to start!
I would be much appreciative. Thanks!
Welcome to forums
Yes!
Go and get it!!
Rhodium is the best hardware keyboard device to this date!
I´m very happy with mine
This is my 3rd HTC device. With my big fingers, a hardware keyboard is a MUST. The Tilt had a good keyboard, the Fuze had a better keyboard, the Tilt2 has the best keyboard for someone like me. And now that I have to have bifocal glasses , the larger screen is MUCH appreciated.
I say get it as well. I had the Fuze, AT&T's version of the original Touch Pro, for a week and hated it. I just got a Tilt 2 and it's a much better device. I've been using it for a few days and haven't noticed any freezing or bad lag. I've loaded a few programs and done a few registry tweaks and so far I've been very happy with the results. Slingplayer Mobile looks great on this device and I get GPS locks in seconds in both Google Maps and Bing Mobile. The touch screen is very responsive and TouchFlo 3D has really improved in a year. I noticed some complaints about the Widcomm Bluetooth stack but the phone paired right away with my Motorola headset and the handsfree system in my Acura RL and has worked flawlessly with both.
I plan on deleting as many of the stock bloatware programs as I can to free up some memory, but so far the stock AT&T ROM has been fine. The keyboard is awesome - I don't mind having the symbols in the top row as I seem to use them more when typing emails. This is a really nice device.
So what's the favorite ROM around here? Might be a week (or a few evne) before I pick this up, and I want to make sure I have my technology down so I don't keep on flashing.
I have a Motorola Q9h at the moment.... it's what got me hooked on windows mobile. I couldn't believe that I could actually edit the registry! So yeah, I'm all about tweaks, but I remember my first couple weeks and I was all over the place trying to find all the tweaks I needed.
I'm hoping to go into this next move prepared.
My advice is this - make sure you try the phone out first. Try to have a conversation in a moderately noisy environment and see if you can hear the other person, even with the volume on full.
Loud enough for you? If so, then get the phone. Everything else about it is awesome.
If not loud enough, forget it, find a different phone made by a company who doesn't assume all their customers have bionic ears. It will drive you crazy and frustrate you every phone call, and there is no fix.
The best rom for me which is closest to stock as possible is here. I currently have been running for about a month and this is stable and great. Very close to the ATT stock rom.
It's a terrific phone, I highly recommend it. The keyboard is the best I've ever used, the screen is gorgeous, and the build quality is fantastic. If you're looking to start somewhere, I recommend the following links: XDA-Developers Wiki article on the Rhodium and Flashing your first Rhodium ROM. Of all the places to start, those are probably best. The stickies at the top of the forums are also good to read, as they often contain important information.
Also, as many will tell you, there is no best ROM. I personally like EnergyROM Leo for my purposes, but other ROMs may work best for what you prefer to do with your Rhodium. I would recommend looking in peoples' signatures and seeing what ROMs people are using, or better yet, flash them all and see what works for you. Now that that's out of the way, welcome to XDA-Developers!
Perfect Dave!! Thanks a ton!
If I could rep you guys on these boards I would!

Unless he's having specific issues or a WM veteran I don't see why you'd point him to how to flash a ROM first thing... Probably let him use the device out-of-box for a bit.

The OP was interested in information concerning cooked ROMs, and where a good place to start would be. I figured that they'd want to know the process of installing one since they were inquiring about which one they should flash, and I thought that link would be a good place to start (when concerning ROMs). It's not like they have to flash one just because I linked there, and if they'd seen the instructions already there's no harm, so I thought I was being helpful by posting a useful related link. IMO there's nothing wrong with using a device out of the box (I did for ~1 year), but the OP requested more info on ROMs and I simply gave it to them.
I've had my Tilt 2, for 2 weeks.
And I LOVE IT !!!
And i'm already a flashing whore ..........

Yeah, I've been using WM for 2 years now on my motorola q9h. The tweaking aspect is the reason I *want* to stay w/WM... and I was definitely looking for exactly what dave posted!
Also, as I indicated in a few posts, I want to know as much as I can before actually getting the phone so I can flash it, tweak it, set it up how I want it, and then not touch it so that I can keep a stable environment. I don't want to lose my messages and things...

Let's leave your mom out of this
(I'm sorry, I have a chronic condition involving mom jokes)
well.... I just picked up the tilt 2 . it's pretty cool so far but I do notice all the lag people have been talking about... will prolly just take some getting used to.
My advice would be to try and get the out-of-the-box system working, install a few apps / shells / tweaks, figure out what's important to you and then flash. Pretty much any stock rom will be lag-free or lag-minimal. There's a lot of good ROMs / chefs out there. Flashing several will definitely whet your appetite.

After owning this thing for awhile.. good LORD does it freeze up a lot :/. I mean, I get used to it and "deal" with it, but it becomes painfull noticeable when my friend has his droid out.
Maybe it's time to start looking into those homebrews for better efficiency, heh.

I rarely reset my phone for freezing issues, especially on sense 2.1 ROMs. Sense 2.5 ROMs maybe once a week at most. At the end of the day to get a phone that more closely functions how you want it to, a custom ROM is the way to go.
I will say the most stable release I ever used was the stock VZW 6.1 TF3D 2.0. I could run that thing for weeks and still idle at 49%.

There's a couple of things that should be done with all new TP2's to help reduce memory hogging and help performance in general:
First, run the first two cabs below. One switches off push internet for a big resource savings. The other one switches on dynamic memory allocation, which does a much better job of freeing up memory when apps aren't using it.
Next, run the Advanced Config cab below...it's a utility that gives you access to all sorts of deeper-level settings in the phone. When you run it, navigate to the "power management" section, and make the first 7 entries there set to "enabled (advised)"
Do a soft-reset after these, and you should see a significant reduction in memory use and lock-ups.
Lastly, use the Crud Scraper attached below...copy it to your SD card and just run the .exe from there (not your PC). It allows you to uninstall a fair amount of the bloat AT&T was generous enough to include on the phone
Some pretty good advice in this thread for new users. I've been playing with WM since well before it was WM and I've had an overwhelmingly positive experience with it, that is until i moved from the kaiser to the tilt2. I was ready to chunk it and get something else but decided to flash a few roms first. Not expecting much i was surprised by the significant performance improvements and overall appeal the device gained over the stock At&t rom.
My advice, I woudl only try "fixing" the issues with teh stock rom if you are absolutley stuck with it. if you are not stuck using the AT&T rom for some reason flash one, there are several good ones out there and all of them seem to be an improvement over the At&t rom in terms of stability and performance.

[Q] Why so many ROM's...and Sense, or no Sense?

I've read and used a great deal of the information I've found in these forums, and definitely appreciate and admire all the work that is being done. But still being somewhat new to this, I'm a bit confused about all the ROM's available and what makes one better than others.
I've rooted my EVO to be able to run android wireless tether and Titanium Backup, and hopefully other things down the road (installed unRevoked3 and then 'Forever'..which worked flawlessly). But I held off on the latest OTA after reading that it cannot yet be rooted, and then I decided to look at the variety of ROM's out there just in case I might see something amazing. What I just don't get yet is what the most popular ROM's provide that are better than the 'standard' EVO (2.1-update1..build 1.47.651.1)?
(with due respect, I also wonder why a ROM would even be released if it kills 4G, the radio, battery life, drops the camera to only 3mp, etc..).
Beyond all this, I'm a bit confused about why HTC 'Sense' seems to be something that gets bashed a lot. Is it a bad thing for some reason..the phone is a beauty imho. This or that ROM says it does or does not have 'Sense' in a way that makes me wonder what's wrong with it as far as developers or the community is concerned?
Thanks. Any thoughts or answers will be much appreciated.

Hi, for starters as long as you used unrevoked forever you can apply any OTA update and be able to continue flashing ROMs. This prevents the phone from locking out unsigned ROMs, so flash away. In regards to the many similar looking ROMs, most of the changes are under the hood and provide many improvements such as battery life. Also, many ROMs remove certain apps and services which are considered bloat and of not much use. Visually similar, but functionally varied. Sense, although providing some eye candy and improvements over AOSP, is heavy and requires a lot of system resources. Also, like me, many prefer having natural android over a heavily modified look. Hopes this helps

Suggestion, if you have plans for flashing rom (and you will once you understand the advantages) make sure you are fully nand unlocked, also check to see if the rom you want does better with clockwork mod recovery or ra recovery. I love htc sense, but it kills the ability to use certain bluetooth devices like the wii classic controllers for emulators. I'm with you, I'm in atlanta where 4g is strong, I take pictures and hd videos all the time so I stay away from"experimental" roms. So far I haven't seen a rom with "sense" unbroken 4g/cam/camcorder. A lot of people trade stability for speed/power.
One thing I've been doing lately is kind of putting together my setup a la carte through mod releases. Keep asking questions here as well as in the threads of potential roms and a developer might implement what you're looking for.
Sent from my HTC EVO
If you want a list of the most popular ROMs and what features work for them check my sig, it gives also performance and battery tests for them. It also says if it has sense or not.
Thanks...so far so good.
Thanks for the replies, and I actually feel better that my take on things is close to the mark. I love that there are people out there hacking away to modify software to suit a variety of needs...if I had a million bucks I'd give it to all you people. This is what I think makes the end user/owner able to drive some of what the market provides.
I love this phone and so far have been 100% happy with it (ha..especially now that I have root and can install what I want to suit my own ends! Thanks again people
I'm still a bit concerned about what I've read that even if you have root now, the latest OTA can -not- be rooted yet, i.e. don't update with the Froyo 2.2 OTA or you loose it all. Is this correct? I did see the response that once I have unRevoked-Forever on my phone that I can update to any OTA...but I seem to think that may not be accurate.
Thanks,

i know NOTHING about unrevoked anything. however if youre rooted be happy. you can go and flash a 2.2 rom. they are the same as the OTA (if they're different im sure the differences are marginal) and you keep root. hurrah!

Yea, I recommend what nenn said. The 2.2 roms have what the ota updates have in it and you don't loose root.

[Q] New Forum Requests?

Just ordered a new Casio Gz'One Commando which came out a little over a month back. From what I can gather, there doesn't seem to be any good, centralized places discussing much about the phone.
This led me to these questions...
How does one go about requesting a new forum section for a new phone?
What are the requirements to get a new phone added to the forum?
It seems this phone can be rooted; however, with only bits and pieces of information scattered throughout several forums, it makes it difficult to harden the process and help those with issues getting it to work. Not to mention, it's been a pain finding helpful do's/don'ts with things like de-bloating and (perhaps the most important mod I'll ever make to this phone) de-Binging it. Considering the issues people have had with removing Bing from Samsung, it would be nice to get a group of people together to work on the issues and get a good process.
Appreciate any info. Thx.

Need help with rooting (for android noob!)

Okay first of all hi this is my first time here so I apologize if this has already been posted (most likely has..).
I'm not a very patient person when It comes through reading forum threads hours after I've woken up.
Anyways~ on to my question.
I am looking into purchasing my very first Android (yay!) so of course I've done very extensive (sorta) research on the different OS versions and phones. I've come to decide that I am mostly interested in the new-ish ICS version of Android OS, however I am on a very tight budget for phone buying (I'm talkin' non-smartphone prices here...). I have decided to go the roundabout way and get an older (cheaper) phone off of ebay and root it to get the OS I want.
Now here's where I need some help, I am mostly interested in the Huawei U8652 (aka at&t's Fusion) and HTC Mytouch 4G Slide (PB65100). I would like the ICS ROM for either (preferably both :good and the Stock file in case I mess this all up.
Any pointers, links, and/or guides would be of great help! and I will definitely credit you if it works without a hitch :good:
Please note that I will not even attempt anything until I have located the stock files so I dont end up with a dead phone.
Thank you so much for reading, and in advance for your help. :victory:
Side note: I am also open to advice on better phones that are not as new that would be better than the two I am looking at. My basic needs in a phone are a good camera, decent speed concerning apps, and wifi (of course). I am not a very patient person so laggy/glitchy/buggy phones are not welcome, thanks! :good:
me too..same question

[Q] Rooting Etc. the s3

Okay, I just recently got the S3 after having an HTC hero for years that was unceremoniously killed by mother nature on a ride home that took me through a torrential downpour on a motorcycle.
My little hero was rooted and running cyanogenmod 7.2 however i haven't messed with modifying any phone or such since that one or more advanced than that.
I know there are tons of threads with how Tos on rooting the s3 and such. But, I have noticed in a few of them they mention "tripping a flash counter". Does the method shown by qbking trip it or not, and what is the significance of this?
Something else I'm noticing being mentioned in various threads are Kernels. To be honest I don't know what they are and haven't found a thread explaining them. So what do they do what is their significance? etc etc
Thanks in advance for any help and I'm sorry if these have been answered before somewhere I'm not seeing. But I think it's better to ask and get answers from the experts and be sure before moving forward with modifying my brand new phone. Especially since the guys at my local sprint store root and modify their phones so they know what to look for in case something were to happen.
Before I answer your questions, I just wanted to thank you for reading up a lot prior to asking and trying to find the answer on your own. Also, your questions were clear and concise, which is becoming more rare on this site (and others).
Ok, as far as the trip counter goes, it shouldn't matter if you trip it. Samsung is a lot more developer-friendly than HTC is, so there's no locked boot loader (on the s3) and there's no real big deal with tripping the counter. You can use triangle away to remove the trip, but it shouldn't matter. I believe qbking's method well trip it.
Kernals are a bit more difficult to explain, but if you're familiar with drivers for Windows, I think the concept is similar. The android os is not designed to communicate with every piece of hardware out there. The kernals are there to act as the translator between the "generic" language of android and the specific language of the specific hardware that's used in the phone. So when android asks for the GPS, all it had to do is call upon the GPS. The kernel is the one that translates that and gives directions to the specific piece of hardware (in this case, the GPS). The main advantage of custom kernals is that they can also relate the processor speed, which can either boost performance or save battery life, depending on your preferences and settings.
There is a thread in general that talks a lot about the ktoonsez Kendall and the various settings that people have used. I've found it a good primer on kernals and how the different governors work.
After all that, have fun flashing!

Thanks for the help and the info. As far as the kernel thing goes i must admit i feel stupid now, esp being a computer science major, granted I'm just beginning toward my degree however for some reason i just didn't put two and two together. My excuse is that it was late at night/early in the morning heh , that being said please excuse me while i go bang my head against a wall to see if i can jump start my brain.
I guess now the only thing left to do is watch the video again/download the files and root the sucker and go from there.
Thanks again for the info and guess i need to read the FAQ a bit more rather than skimming through
We're here to help! I'm glad you're understanding it better now, even with the couple of horrible autocorrect mistakes I had in the post.
Hope you enjoy all the custom roms out there, I always enjoy trying out a new one.
Peace,
Topher
