What really upset me is that my phone was fine I was using 4.4.2 stock and had good battery life even without battery saver being on... Then I went against my ownif it ain't broke don't try to fix it principles and downloaded 4.4.3 Since then I've noticed my phone wasn't as fantastic battery wise as it used to be.. I started becoming conscious of the need to switch on power saver more often as my phone was draining much quicker than 4.4.2. For this reason I can't wait to switch over to lollipop hopefully issues will have been ironed out...without a show of a doubt 4.4.3 is not as battery efficient as 4.4.2, for my phone anyway... It's a sin that android users don't have the flexibility to roll back to previous versions as they see fit really annoying that I have to wait to the next version....I'm not a hardcore tech user so i dont have the confidence to root and all that...if I send my phone back to my phone company will they roll back to 4.4.2 for me?
Is it a carrier branded version? There are apps you can use to see what is draining your battery. Its possible if you have a carrier branded phone, that there is carrier bloatware that is causing battery drain. Try to disable sync or any apps you don't use (particularly the bloat) and see if that helps.
Have a peek at the first 4 posts in the battery help thread in my signature. If you would like help, post the recommended screen shots there. And specify you are on an M8 to avoid confusion.
There's likely an issue.... Battery life can be great on any version, depending on your usage type and setup. ?
battery on 4.on 4.4 sense is 10 times better for me than on 4.4.3 ...i just go back (because i wanted s2w...hope the new kernel source will come in next days) and again further to 4.4.4 because 4.4.3 battery is just to bad...also on original unrooted
Ok just visited the battery help thread and tried some of the suggestions...before without power saving I would get 1 percent drainage every 2-3 minutes with max brightness...now reduced brightness to auto and slider to lowest level and averaging ten minutes per 1 percent....also removed Google now....this is an improvement but didn't have to do this with 4.4.3...I think some apps are not playing nicely with 4.4.3. I hear Google is making a big effort with battery management for lollipop release...
Use an app to see what is draining the battery. Otherwise you are just guessing.
You also never answered my question whether it was carrier branded, as some carrier bloatware has been known to access the data connection frequently and kil the battery.

Thanks redpoint, I am on Rogers Canada, actually I was just reading that some nexus users also had battery drain issues with 4.4.3 update. One suggestion there was to disable 4g as maybe the updated modem drivers weren't as efficient as the 4.4.2 ones...going to see if I can select 3g on my HTC one m8 and see if that makes a difference...I wonder if HTC have also modified the modem drivers for their 4.4.3 update too?

Update: well I just changed my device from 4g to 3g and the signal bar has instantly shot up from two bars to maximum five bars, wondering if this will make a difference to battery life? If so I can live with 3g

Yeah? Its even worse on 4.4.4. Using the same settings, same apps, same usage patterns, my battery lasts only 10 hours. I used to get 18 hours with %25-%35 left at bedtime. Google sucks - coz, at the end of the day, the combined battery usage of Android System + Android OS + Google Play Services is more than %60!

I just purchased my inc today, coming from a d2. Iv read a lot about battery life not being so hot in the past but don't see much current feedback. So my question is since the recent patch update how has everyones battery life been, better or about the same? I'm loving this phone but the battery life for me will kill me wanting to keep it, iv been looking at the fascinate to so...
Managing programs and settings will cut down on battery life. The new update didn't see to make the battery "last longer" but it did make it charge much much faster.
So what about 2.2 in general did it really do anything worth mentioning for battery life or does it still suck pretty bad?

Battery life still sucks pretty bad. Only thing I noticed about Nov update was more bloatware and battery charging is about 1% per minute vs the forever and a day prior to update.
Setting screen brightness lower and timeout sooner as well as stopping unneeded apps will improve battery life. Least that's the was it seems to me.
One big win on my batt life was choosing an undervolted kernel, like hydrakernel v0.5.
hydra kernel is your best bet, the only thing I can say is to monitor your 3g. turn it to mobile always-on, turn that setting off. its in mobile data in settings, wireless networks.. this will turn 3g off while the phone is sleeping. I get 2 days easily with this method with the stock battery.

I mght have to try that advise out then. Iv read about the data always on thing, my only concern was receiving email and then vvm (I use g voice). But I already rooted just have to read up on everything a bit more, HTC and MOTO are two way different areas when it comes to rooting it seems.

I bought the GNex from Expansys USA the day it came out and I have had the phone for about 5 days now. There are several things that are making me questions whether or not to keep it, get an exchange, or return altogether. Please advise:
1. The main thing I am concerned with is the battery performance. I am a Noob, so I am not sure how to run all those fancy battery tests, but I can say that when I take the phone off the charger in the morning there is only about 30-40% left by the afternoon, and that is with moderate browsing, music, and a few calls and texts. I installed the Advanced Task Killer to try and save battery life. I am coming from an iPhone 4 (I was locked into it with a contract, bad purchase I know) and it seems that the battery life is way better on the iPhone. Is there a way to determine if my GNex battery or device has a genuine problem before I return this one and potentially get a worse one? Also, I read somewhere that with these batteries they get better over time, is that true?
2. Since I got a GNex from the very first batch sent to the USA, I am wondering if the newly resumed/shipped batches will have the volume fix installed? If so, is it worth me sending back the one I have now for a newly flashed one with the update? How can anyone tell if their device is updated anyway? I have Android Version 4.0.1, but isn't that what everyone has now?
3. The speaker volume is not that impressive, and I tried installing those volume booster apps to no avail. Is the speaker just not that powerful on this device?
Feel free to insult and/or flame me on my previous iPhone usage and also my lack of technical knowledge. I love the GNex because of it's amazing features on paper and all the available bandwidths I can choose from as I travel abroad frequently and this is one of the only penta-band phones I could find other than a few Nokias. But they don't run Andriod!

Android has "worse" battery life than iOS mostly because it has true multi-tasking and constant connectivity (unless in airplane mode). They generally do improve slightly, but anything 8 - 12 hrs. is pretty average, with "average" usage.

You will get an OTA (over-the-air update) sometime over the next 6 days. Most likely any replacement one you received you would still have to wait for the OTA anyways.

Thank for the quick reply s.m.knipe! Like I said I am new to this type of phone OS, so I appreciate the answers. I forgot to add another question before:
When I make a call, and I tap the icon for speaker phone, and then immediately try and tap the icon for the keypad numbers, there is a delay and the keypad numbers do not appear immediately. I guess I am saying there is a lag of sorts between pressing the speaker icon and the keypad icon to appear. However, this only seems to happen when the phone is taking a while to connect the call. When I tried doing the same thing in a better service area the icons switched back and forth seamlessly.
I really don't notice any defects on the phone at all in terms of build quality as opposed to others' here on this forum that have screen issues and cameras not being centered so that is why I am reluctant to send this one back for replacement if there is really no problem with the battery or speaker. Unfortunately I have no one to compare devices with as this phone is rare in the US. Anyway, I guess I'll be keeping this bad boy and use it as best I can!

Ok so I just retried making a call in this better reception area, and I still have the lag between the speaker icon and the keypad icon. Must be something else besides the reception?

1.) Battery is what it is. You might want to wait for undervolted or underclocked kernels or more battery concious roms to come out. There is one (Android Revolution HD) which the first post claims to have better battery life than the stock rom. Second, as pointed out by many members, task killers do not help the battery at all. (Cannot confirm this myself, speculation from different posts) If you wanted, you could post some screenshots about your battery life and screen time and see how it compares to other members with Galaxy Nexus'. Note: The iPhone 4 has lower battery consumption because its clocked significantly less than the Galaxy Nexus (Single core 800mhz i think) and the OS itself is heavily optimized for the phone. Plus, I would assume that the iPhone has less processes running in the background compared to the G-Nexus (could be wrong though)
2.) The volume fix is being rolled out via a software update, so it should automatically be sent to your phone whether its the first batch or the hundredth.
3.) For the speaker volume, you might try changing some settings in the equalizer? Not too sure about this, but many people have reported that the speakers are reasonable in terms of performance and if you seriously feel as though the performance of the speaker is that bad, you could try exchanging it, but I doubt any good would come out of it

Since it's a new phone try charging the battery fully and letting it discharge completely. After 3 to 5 times you should see improvement in your battery life. There is a thread on this that gives more info. Also a task killer is a bad idea and the thread covers this topic too.
I have a Nexus S and it's lasts me over 24 hours on a full charge with 3G and WIFI turned on.

The galaxy nexus also has a much larger screen than the iPhone which I think also plays a part in battery consumption

the screen is, without a doubt, the most power hungry component in the phone.
Typically the battery display says 60% of the battery is being spent on the screen. Is this in line with other GNex users?
Oh, and has no one else noticed the lag I mentioned above in the on-screen display when pressing the speaker icon and then the keypad icon and then the long wait for the keypad coming up when making a call?

Hi everyone,
My One X used to have brilliant battery life. I didn't turn on the screen that often throughout the day, but I was able to regularly check the news, send and receive texts, make a few calls and - crucially - keep my Wifi on for the entire day. With this setup, I was regularly getting 4 or 5 days of usage without having to charge my phone. However, as soon as JellyBean came along as an official update, I grabbed it... since then, I'm lucky if I get a day and a half out of it before I need to plug it into the wall.
I'm not running any custom ROMs: just whatever I get through official O2 OTA updates. Battery usage says that 36% of my drain is due to Android OS, with another 20% due to Maps. The rest are tiny, only 2 to 5%. Now I understand that a new version of Android might make some new demands on the hardware, but from what I heard, the update was supposed to improve battery life if anything. Even with the new Power Saver feature on, the difference is minimal, with only a few hours standby time gained overall.
Can anyone suggest anything to remedy this, or is this fairly normal? It's not world-ending and perhaps I was just really lucky to get 5 days of use in the first place, but thought I'd ask the experts before I grin and bear it. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
19 hours and 40 minutes into this usage cycle, I've got 57% remaining. So it's shaping up to be about 40 hours of usage, down from 120 at its peak. Right now, it's also saying that Android OS has used 99% of my battery... and nothing else is on the list.
Does no-one have any idea what's going on?
Did you make an hard reset when you updated your phone?
This is why when you upgrade your phone to a newer Android version it is better if you perform a hard reset

Thanks for this. Your suggestion got me checking for other people having issues with Google Now and battery life. I disabled it as you suggested and I'm definitely seeing an improvement. It's still not as good as it was, but I think I might be able to squeeze more than two days out of it now.
Do you have stock rom? Because I've just upgraded to JB yesterday and flashed a custom rom, and since then my battery is like 3 times more powerful.
You should definitely switch to a custom rom... Ever since I upgraded to JB I've seen a massive improvement in my battery life.. From barely making it through the day to almost 2days of my typical of usage.
Google Now does seem to kill battery as it polls the Google maps app a lot.. So I usually open task manager to make sure it isn't running in the morning background.

This may seem like a stupid question but I'm racking my brain for solutions.
Previously I've been quite impressed with the battery life on the M8, however recently updated to the most recent firmware so I can use the current version of ARHD and since then I've seen a considerable reduction in battery life. For example, today I've been off charge for just under 12 hours and have used the device very little (1 hour 26 of screen on time) and I'm down to 20%, with screen usage right at the top of the battery use chart. I've tried different ROMS, into a GPE ROM, only to see this poor life continue.
The handset was bought from Three in the UK, and on baseband 1.19.21331147A1.09G-20.57.4196.01L_F.
I'm at a bit of a loss basically, and trying to narrow down a culprit. If anyone has got any ideas I'd be very thankful.

I think so, I've been having problems with mine recently but I thought it was because I'd rooted and then unrooted back to stock this week. Now I suspect it might have something to do with the latest FW. I'm managing around 18 hours but there's something keeping the phone awake so it can't get into a full sleep and save the juice.

Hi guys. I'm on the latest FW2.22.401.4 too. On my main uni (rooted but stock) I'm not confronting such problems. But on my secondary unit with ViperOne (M8) installed I'm having such problems sometimes (not always). Think this is quite wired, as Venom works with the stock kernel ....

Absolutely. Firmware contains radio baseband, which IMO cell reception is one of the greatest contributors to battery drain (aside from the more obvious factors like screen on time, runaway wakelocks, etc.). It could be that the new radio does not happen to play well in your area. This would also explain if some folks are getting better battery life than you on the same firmware, as reception is often a local factor.
I have read numerous posts about the Android L cell standby bug on the One M8 and used that to make as many changes as possible before posting here. I haven't seen many posts where the HTC One M9 was affected by the MM update in this way.
I have had my Verizon One M9 since March 2015 (preorderd it), and it worked great on Lollipop. My cell standby was consistently under 5%. Then, I upgraded to 6.0 around March 2016 and have been noticing consistent battery drain from what I think is the Phone Radio (Gsam) or Cell Standby (stock battery app). It is >40% with the screen on and >30% with the screen off. Airplane mode appears to help with the cell standby percentage (down to 5% after 12 hours, battery down by ~15%). I am also having more issues with the phone heating up; 114 Fahrenheit was the highest I noticed before it stopped functioning from the heat.
What I've tried:
-Verizon's Repair Assistant/Software Upgrade Tool
-Factory Reset
-Wipe Cache Partition
-Clear Network Settings
-Turn off Advanced Calling (seemed to help the most)
-Switch from Global to LTE/CDMA
-Keeping WiFi off unless I'm downloading something (helps the WiFi battery drain issue)
-Location off
What I have NOT tried:
-Booting into safe mode (my apps don't seem to be misbehaving per Gsam or the stock monitor)
-Unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom ROM. (I'm S-On with a Locked Bootloader.)
In all fairness, I get good battery life (2 days) if I don't use my phone (<1 hour SOT in a day). If I use my phone, it dies in like 6 hours. I lose over 10% per hour of active use (Chrome, texting, Gmail). I don't have Facebook, Twitter, or G+, but I use Hangouts.
Reason I'm concerned: People I live with, same contract have a 1% cell standby (Samsung Galaxy S5 on 6.0.1). Why is my phone's cell standby so high even though this issue was supposedly fixed for MM?

I run no social networking apps, have uninstalled everything I don't actually use.
GSAM tells me Google Play services is a culprit, so just today I've removed my Google acct, location turned off unless I need it, and will test over the next day or so .
I'm waiting for a custom rom probably HTC 10 port to get rave reviews and will likely give that a go .

I'm not rooted yet. I noticed high Google Play Services usage (don't remember the exact percentage and didn't screenshot it) a few days of upgrading to Android M. It seemed to help to backup my data, factory reset the phone, run Verizon's Repair Assistant/Software Upgrade tool, and turn off Advanced Calling. Now Google Play Services is calculated at using 10% of my battery since last full charge (4.9% per GSam App Sucker). The cell standby issue was probably there all along, but I just didn't notice it until I tamed the Google Play Services drain. Maybe doing what I did will help you. I can't post outside links yet, but if you Google "Verizon's Repair Assistant - Software Upgrade (HTC)," it will be the first result that comes up.

I suspect my phone's issue is a reporting bug, as some other posts have suggested. I feel bad complaining since I get great battery life if I don't use my phone. Comparing phone radio usage with airplane mode on for 12 hours to not using my phone for 12 hours (airplane mode off), the only difference was in reporting. It was 5% with airplane mode on and like 35% with it off. Same amount of battery was used. Perhaps the screen is really what's draining my battery. All I know is that I used to get double the screen-on-hours while running way more apps when I had Lollipop.

I have had my Verizon One M9 since March 2015 (preorderd it), and it worked great on Lollipop. My cell standby was consistently under 5%. Then, I upgraded to 6.0 around March 2016 and have been noticing consistent battery drain from what I think is the Phone Radio (Gsam) or Cell Standby (stock battery app). It is >40% with the screen on and >30% with the screen off. Airplane mode appears to help with the cell standby percentage (down to 5% after 12 hours, battery down by ~15%). I am also having more issues with the phone heating up; 114 Fahrenheit was the highest I noticed before it stopped functioning from the heat.
What I've tried:
-Verizon's Repair Assistant/Software Upgrade Tool
-Factory Reset
-Wipe Cache Partition
-Clear Network Settings
-Turn off Advanced Calling (seemed to help the most)
-Switch from Global to LTE/CDMA
-Keeping WiFi off unless I'm downloading something (helps the WiFi battery drain issue)
-Location off
What I have NOT tried:
-Booting into safe mode (my apps don't seem to be misbehaving per Gsam or the stock monitor)
-Unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom ROM. (I'm S-On with a Locked Bootloader.)
In all fairness, I get good battery life (2 days) if I don't use my phone (<1 hour SOT in a day). If I use my phone, it dies in like 6 hours. I lose over 10% per hour of active use (Chrome, texting, Gmail). I don't have Facebook, Twitter, or G+, but I use Hangouts.
Reason I'm concerned: People I live with, same contract have a 1% cell standby (Samsung Galaxy S5 on 6.0.1). Why is my phone's cell standby so high even though this issue was supposedly fixed for MM?

I'm quite sure I have this same problem. I've only had my M9 a week, and am seeing some strange and inconsistent battery drain. The majority of time if I'm doing a simple task like texting or checking e-mail, the phone gets warm (warmer than anything I've used). Battery seems to deplete quickly too, mainly with some from of google services being the culprit. However, I've also noticed high mobile radio usage. I can see that the mobile radio is active pretty much the same amount of time phone radio is, even when on wifi....I've never experienced this before. It is as if the mobile radio is constantly locked on (which I noticed there is a check box for this in dev options). I know the Moto X 2013 had this same issue when updating to L, and was never patched. I came from a Droid Maxx, so maybe I was spoiled with battery, but I can almost sit and watch my battery drain on this M9 (and thaw my hands if necessary). I also have rooted every android I have owned, and decided I don't want to root the M9 and take a break from all that. Immediately a bit annoyed with the heat and abysmal battery life. That said, build quality is great, and the user experience is quite good and fluid (aside from ridiculously pointless pinned notifications like when boomsound is active or when you connect to wifi and it reminds you you're connected....both mind bogglingly stupid and take up way too much of the notification panel).
If I have to disable a bunch of features to get it to not heat up and/or use less mobile radio, most likely will sell it. Unless rooting and romming helps? Though initially I'm not seeing much development on this M9. I want to like this phone so badly but these problems that shouldn't be problems make it a bit hard to do so.
