I currently have an AT&T Rooted GS3 running 4.1.2 with CWM Recovery. I use Titanium Backup and have schedules to do automated backups 3 times per week (keep last 2 backups of all apps & data). I have Frozen several of the Samsung and AT&T crapware apps. I would like to upgrade to an AT&T GS5. At the end of the process I would like my GS5 to be rooted (need root for Titanium Backup and AutomateIt Pro) with stock TouchWiz and get all my apps and data back that I am currently using on my GS3. I'm looking for input on the best way to accomplish this task.

You should be aware of the fact that not all apps on 4.1.2 will run on 4.4.2.
Also, depending on the method you use to root your s5, it may void any remaining warranty on the phone.
And only restore user apps and data. No system apps/settings. For contacts I suggest using the built in import/export function for the migration.

Don't much care about the phone warranty. Already knew about system apps. Considered the possibility of unrooting and getting std recovery to update the GS3 to Kitkat first. Then root again so I can back everything up again before I do the migration. For contacts, I have them all backed up in Outlook and can bring them back with DejaOffice and Companion Link. Any ideas on rooting a GS5 other than Towelroot?

You'll have to check the S5 threads for that. I imagine it's as easy as always for most of them though. Flash the SuperSU zip in recovery.

Doesn't kies offer a migration option???
Don't really know tbh. It might, but I personally hate Kies and always avoid using it for anything!

Totally agree. I wouldn't even use Kies to wipe myself.

I know this is sort of a noob question, but I just got the Nexus and I want to be sure before I lose all my stuff again.
1. When i signed into my account on the nexus, it started restoring all my apps from my Incredible.
2. I got my Verizon Nexus tonight, set up everything how I liked it... then I decided to root.
What should I have done before I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it to save all of my apps and settings?
After rooting I returned to the phone and found that everything had been wiped, and nothing restored... Why?
If i wait until the Jellybean OTA update, and apply it, will I lose everything again?
This is frustrating as hell, and I want to know how to keep everthing between flashes.
I know you can nandroid.. but thats of no use to me cause I want to keep the new rom...
Do i really have to use Titanium backup?
Titanium backup is a secure and simple way to backup, imo.
I dont wanna buy the pro version.... any other ways?
I use mybackup pro it works perfectly.

Ok so I need to flash the stable release of CM9 but I need to know how I can restore all my apps and app data. I've spent some money on apps that I'll lose if I flash and just redownload. Suggestions?

Just re-download your apps. Every transaction is stored in your Google account, you won't be charged twice.

Just use the Galaxy Toolkit to backup and restore features. Link is below:

Is your bootloader already unlocked? If yes, flash a custom recovery, root your phone and use an app like titanium backup to backup apps + appdata.
If no, unlocking it will wipe your device. You can use adb backup in that case though, use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351

Nailed it!
And OP, your purchases are all tied to your Google Account. Signing back into the new ROM means you get access to all of your apps for download again if you want.
Here's your guide.

If your looking to back up your apps and not any system data along with the app data, the best app for that is titanium backup. But it requires you have root. Just a matter of backing them up and then restoring them using the tool. It keeps a backup on your phone. Or if you have the pro version you can store the backups online at your storage place of choice.

No. stop suggesting people to use a toolkit, since its pretty obvious that the op doesnt know what he's doing! if something goes wrong, will you be the one to get his device out of trouble?
and besides, the link you posted goes to a baseband thread. ????
a simple solution was given, use play store builtin restore feature, unless op chooses to roll bare aosp, but even then, op wouldnt need a toolkit (he would know how to build from src) to restore apps.

Hello everybody,
I'm thinking about to speed up my phone again as it was in the past. Those 4.2 Features are pretty poor compared to the slowness they bringing into our phone.
I was very satisfied with 4.1.2 it was like made for gnex only and not for hardwaremonster like n4.
So my question:
Is there any possibility to flash stock rom 4.1.2 and get all the data from 4.2.2 so i dont have to set up everything from scratch?
Maybe an app that sync with a cloud or something else like full backup of the settings and appsettings and so on.
And after that the system should not push the notification about new updates.
thanks
greetz from germany
You could flash the stock image from Google.
Titanium backup could be used to backup your user data

but i have stock image without root so titanium would not work.

You could try Carbon. I haven't used it myself so I can't comment on it but if I remember correctly it does not require root.

I always do nandroid backup first....no root needed, just custom recovery. Then flashing new factory image (full wipe) , copying everything back to sdcard...and finally restoring backup.
I would say root for the purposes of baking up to cloud with tibu, then flash, root, restore, unroot if you want to.

I followed the tutorial provided by zedomax, but I am unable to reboot into CWM recovery. I downloaded the heimdall zip package for my mac, opened terminal, entered download mode, and everything went smoothly until rebooting into recovery mode. At this point it takes me to the stock recovery, instead of CWM Recovery. This process has also increased my binary count to 3 (because I attempted this process 3 times). I have the T-Mobile Galaxy Note II running Android 4.1.2. This is the first device I have attempted to root. Please help...
Follow Up
After reaching out to Zedomax on twitter, I was able to find a solution. He suggested I download cwm recovery through my mac's terminal (following the steps I had previously followed), and before the phone reboots, remove the battery, THEN reboot device. Somehow this worked, and I now have a fully rooted SGH-T889 with the latest version of CWM Recovery. Now the question is, what do I need to backup before flashing a new rom (i.e. modem, efs, etc.), and how do I know if everything is backed up properly so I don't lose my mobile data/IMEI/other important stuff I don't know about.

Use andromizer to back up efs (should be about 20mb and save that to your Computer.. TWRP also can back the EFS up as well, not sure about that or CWM when it comes to the EFS files but as far as the full BACKUP goes, you can do that in CWM

Thanks for the andromizer recommendation. I have everything backed up to my external SD, computer, and backup SD. Probably more backups than I need, but whatever. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.
So I have been wondering about free WiFi tethering...Since my device is now rooted, can I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot for free, regardless of the amount of "tether data" that I have with T-Mobile? I have heard conflicting reports. I have unlimited data for my Note 2, but the tethering data (200MB/month) is separate. I don't want to increase my bill by $20/month for unlimited tethering. Is it possible for me to use my phone as a WiFi hotspot, and not have my carrier know? I apologize if this has already been answered in a different thread.

As far as I know the answer to WiFi tethering is yes and no... Simply put... You can for free, however TMO or whoever your carrier is has access to monitor any tethering usage and therefore can still hit the "end game" button if you get out of hand... As far as others have reported its a matter of keeping that usage within moderation

Note 2 Rooted
Now that you've fully rooted your device and backed up your data, is it possible to go to a standard Android interface without all of the Samsung TouchWiz stuff. Could you install Lollipop? I am asking because I am thinking about rooting my T-Mobile Note 2. I am getting these incessant security warnings from Android SE and they are driving me crazy.
You are able to flash a stock android rom onto your TMo Note 2. This will remove the TW skin, but will also remove the S-Pen functionality (which was a deal breaker for me). before flashing any new rom, you need to make sure the rom is specific to the TMo Note 2. With that being said, there are still some great roms for the Note 2 that have S-pen functionality without the TW look.
I'm not sure this is the right thread... but....
Right now I am using a note 2.... Over time it's gotten choppy, slow, non responsive and force closing apps. I rooted it to try to get rid of what people call Bloat Ware but I don't know how. Can anyone help me figure out how to delete some Bloat ware?

I would say you have two options.
Root device, install custom Rom.
Or
Root device install titanium backup, or similar software and uninstall or freeze apps which might be bloat.
Sometimes a factory reset does the trick, but you need to back up your data.

I already have superuser. And I think titanium. All I do is go in titanium and stop what seems like bloat?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Yup, but it may be more than that. I suggest backup data, apps that you want to keep, freeze unnecessary apps, then do factory reset. If you have cwm or twrp just do a backup in case
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk
Good advice given above: nandroid backup, use TiBU to freeze apps and use your phone for a few days, then delete frozen apps.
Why freeze then try for a few days? Because sometimes apps are intertwined with the system, and deleting them can bring down your system.
This thread may be a bit out of date and for a different carrier, but it will give you an idea of where to start with freezing applications via Titanium Backup or something similar: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025134
I definitely recommend backing up your important data before going on a freezing frenzy. There is a lot which can be frozen, though.
If you are rooted, make sure you have a custom recovery like cwm or twrp. Clear cache and dalvik cache in recovery and reboot. That may help with the laginess of your phone.
