Hi
This might be a stupid question, but anyways:
I bought me a HTC Desire yesterday and im very happy with it.
Now i installed the Advanced Task Killer as i heard its a good app.
Now, every time i open something, like the SNESoid Player, or even my SMS(Messages), and the close it by pressing the Home or back button, i see afterwards in the Task Killer that its still running!?
So, how do i "close" an application, or is this just normal? It's pretty weird to me.
Thanks
This is one of the most asked and answered questions. Search and you shall find.
You probably used a WM device before Android I can imagine. Android OS handles all that stuff automatically, you shouldn't worry about apps not closing because when an app isn't used it isn't using either memory or CPU. When a new application opens and needs memory, the one(s) still running will close and give space for the new one.
As "ArtieQ" said it's not recommended to use a task killer.
But if you really need to stop a program you can use your native task manager, from "settings">applications>manage applications - then when the list of applications loads, you can press menu button and choose "filter" and then "running". Now when you choose an application from the list, it will show you information for it and an option to "force stop" it, that is to close it.
Thanks alot!
Well, i used a crappy iPhone 3G before..no multitasking you know
I was looking for an answer to this question and find something here but I am still a little bit confused : many applications that I have tested dont close if I press the home or the back button and they don't have any "quit" or "exit" command or menu entry. I was facing some battery issues with all these apps in the background. It's true that uninstalling some of them and force closing others in the app manager solved the issue but it is really not confortable to go in the app manager every time after using the phone to close the apps and save battery. I am wondering if an auto-close application exist in the market...
Advanced task manager has an autokill function within It's settings. It also has a desktop widget that you can press to kill apps when you want. You will probably want to add some of your apps to the ignore list though so notifications etc still work ok

I remember that installed somthing like advanced task manager and it ended up by eating my battery charge cause it was running all the time. I'll test this and report back.
Thanks for the tip
Instead of using a task manager/killer consider using 'autostarts' which is an app (paid) which allows you to stop apps starting automatically.
For example, maps gets started when you do almost anything and once started really eats your battery.
I've been using autostarts for a while now and would definitely recommended it for battery saving.
thanks for this tip iain2510
Hi Guys,
I've noticed that when i "remove" (flick upwards) an app from Recent Apps, it does not really kills/closes that app. I know i can go to Task Manager and kill that app. My question is that is there any way (settings) that enables "Kill" of the app when i remove it (using upward flick) from the Recent Apps.
I tried looking up for this but was not successful hence a new thread (i was somewhat sure someone must have ask for it already).
Thanks

I dont believe that there is a setting where you can change that. If you want to kill an individual app, use the task manager but in general, there is really no need to be killing all of your apps - the Android OS is designed to have apps sitting there not closed (and the HOX has 1gig of RAM so your shouldnt see any slow down anyway!).
Some custom ROMS for other devices do have a setting where you can set longpress backbutton to kill the app that you are in. Havent seen this in any One X roms yet but im sure it will come
It has been written many times before but can't be said enough, task killers isnt helping the system at all! Android OS itself controls the ram memory and closes the apps that isnt used in case of running out of memory

App killers are phone killers!!1
Even if you force close the app, it may reopen immediately. some apps do this on their own. you dont need to worry about it.
the phone will prioritise the currently running app over cached or paused apps when it needs to. this is an autonomous feature (you don't have any control over it)
I stopped using App Killers and found performance/battery-life/usability to be exactly the same.
remember, Android has your back.

Yeah but those apps are open and fill up almost whole 1GB RAM and when somone wants play game it is laggy cos not enough ram ..
Even when am broqsing internet is so laggy ..
But when u not doing with mobile it doesnt drain battery cos cpu is idle 99%

well you will see slow down because it's an HTC One X..somehow HTC have managed to reduce the performance of a quad core processor to something that resembles a dual core device...juttering and slowing down..hogging all the RAM and re-drawing the launcher constantly
well done HTC. This the last time you're getting my money.

True, however, the priorization is all wrong. When I send my browser to the background just to open an email for an address, most of the times the browser gets closed.
So, when I revert to the browser it has to start all over.
When I look in taskmanager, I see many programs that should be closed before closing the browser, because the browser was the lastest used application.
I would love to have more control over the dumb task closer of the HOX! For instance:
- really close applications that have been in the background for at least a certain amount of time (so games can have more memory without stutter!)
- close applications in reverse order of latest used instead of used most memory
- try to leave at least a certain amount of memory free (and let ME choose this amount)
So, when many tell that task killers are not needed they are only right for non-HOX devices. In other words, the HOX task killer that works automagically has serious issues preventing us to multi-task!

linux caches stuff in memory to make it quicker when you do want it. unused ram is wasted ram. it is not like windows.
In my area LTE is very weak. Sometimes I will,l get 2 bars only to have it flatline. Even when outside I will be lucky to get LTE. HSPA+ however is very strong. Is there a way I can disable the LTE radio to save battery life? I love this nexus but the battery life is a bit lacking.
Thanks!

I try to help you even I do not have (still) SIM card in my N7-LTE.
On phone I "call" *#*#4636#*#* to open Phone testing app and select "Phone info" and down the page there is "Set preferred network type:". Elaborate this...
One question still persists - how to "call" *#*#4636#*#* on tablet without dialer?
On tablet, you can simple put the "Tablet info" using launcher shortcut to activity.

Any 4G switcher App "should" be able to do this. I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tapbase.LTEswitcher ...
This way you can switch to WCDMA/EDGE or WCDMA Only. ... The change won't stick across a reboot though.
However, it is even easier if you're rooted on the stock Rom (or perhaps others)... Install XPosed Framework. Then using Gravitybox, you can add a 2g/3g/4g switcher toggle to your quick status box.
I don't think the easiest way is "root -> install XPosed fw -> install GravityBox -> add switcher toggle"
For me the XPosed is still something really hacking installed apps and coz my paranoia I don't trust it. All is IMHO so if you want to use XPosed, use it.

It's "easier" in that, once you complete the steps, you just have a nice looking toggle that works and looks like it is SUPPOSED to be there. Using the phone diagnostics menu is not the quickest way if you want to change things on the fly, plus it is possible to mess things up there.
And really, if you won't use XPosed because you don't trust it... then you pretty much can't trust any aftermarket ROM or even rooting tools... so ... I guess you run your device stock unrooted?
You are right of using the diagnostic menu can make some bad things (which are repaired after reboot) but the same can be told about XPosed and installing any of snippets which are not "authenticated".
I disagree with your last long sentence - XPosed is hacking the system/app/whatever you have installed. Custom ROM is not hacking. As "hacking" I mean "modify the application in run-time". I make an example - take the QuickPic - application for displaying pictures and play videos. Creator of this application makes it to display pictures and play videos - no more, no less. Using XPosed you can "modify" this application to browse some web pages. And this is not purpose the developer create this app for. I don't condemns the XPosed fw. It is mighty tool which can help in some circumstances (like tweak OEM ROM), but I primary don't want to use it.
BTW: I use CyanogenMod from version 7 in all of my devices, but you cannot compare XPosed with custom ROM - these two are too way different... and same with rooting system....
Hi, I am a new user of this excellent phone.
I never root my phones (I know - I shouldn't even be here ), but like to tinker with settings a bit.
Anyway, I was just wondering when I go to SETTINGS--APPS--ALL I can see there is an option to 'Disable' on many of stock apps.
I presume, this can free some on the internal memory?
So my question is which of these stock apps can be safely disabled?
I would also appreciate an explanation of what this option actually does.
TIA and enjoy your phones, everybody.
Disabled app's aren't allowed to run in RAM but are still installed and take up internal storage waiting to be enabled again.
You can disable most things it will let you if not rooted. Anything really important to the system won't have a disable button but it's not enough for lots of people. Junk from operator can't be disabled on mine but some semi-useful stuff can... Better to root, remove what you want, unroot again if need be.

**English is not my first language and i haven't used it for a long time, knowing that you should consider to forgive me any mispelling and bad language.
I've had a extreamly ugly case of this phenamenon for the last 7-0 days. And tried almost every method that people here and on XDA have been posting about the subject, with absolute zero luck.
But, yesterday i decided to mix together methods that i had seen from other people, there were few that i tought was more logical than other so why not give it a try. And it worked
Please notice that this is not my work, this is completely other peoples knowledge that i simply put together.
I have LG G3 D855, but theoretically it should work on any kind.
you're device have to have root access and Xposed framework.
open App ops (you can find many apps on play to access it) scroll down to Google Play Services and disable the permissons "Wake" and "keep awake" Then repeat this on Android System and Google Search, you´ll find them on same list as play services.
Install 3C Toolbox (aka Android Tuner) and activate it in Xposed.
on the list on the left in 3C Toolbox, scroll down to Apps manager and select apps startup and events, there you find the same apps as before and when you click each one you´ll get a dropdown with endless processes, find and uncheck "WAKEUP"
On the list on the left navigate to app permissions and click "prevent phone from sleeping. Find those apps there and turn the switch to "block"
Now restart your device.
This should do the trick, or at least it worked for me. I went from 80% wake to sweet deep sleep most of the time that im not using the phone.
I Should add that i also installed Greenify and added those and few more apps to it.
I hope this will help at least someone

I can't even imagine what causes that. altough i did have to restart my device to get it to work.
Also im using the paid/pro version og android tuner, not that i think that matters.

Thanks for the useful information.
I see in your sign you're using AndroidNow: did you apply those tricks on that ROM or on the stock one?
What app did you install for enabling App Ops access?
There are many on the GP and some apparently have some kind of problems (uninstalling, crashing, etc.).

Yes i am using AndroidNow, but first time i applied these settings i was on rooted stock rom , it works on both of them.
I noticed this morning that this seems to disable the location settings of Android Device Manager. so there are some functions that this will cost, but in my opinion i had so much batt draining, that device manager is pretty much useless if the battery is off. So untill google wipes their asses and update play services this is the best i can do.
I have used these two apps to access app ops, both have been successfull:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.findsdk.apppermission
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schurich.android.tools.appopsstarter
the app ops starter has the opinion too check if your rom has app ops by default fefore trying to add it to the device. And i´ve found out that in LG G3 D855 international the app ops settings actually are availeble in android 4.4.2 so i haven't had to flash the settings yet. i just used the app to add a feature to access the setting.
I hope this was helpfull and answers your questions, and sorry how i´ve not been able to reply earlier, we're on different timezones and i usually just visit this site at nights, sometimes everyday, and sometimes everyother day.
