[Q] How to track wifi data usage - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I notice that my wifi symbol constantly has up and down arrows. I'd like to know what is sending/receiving data constantly! I've got all my email clients set to 'manual' and am using Cleanmaster to disable all background apps etc. I'm more concerned with battery than data, but would be good to know why it's constantly going.
Thanks!

Those arrows don't have effect on battery I don't believe. You know on the modem there's an up and down light? Its just letting you know that you are sending and receiving internet/data from the router so you know your getting internet to your tab (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Its a thing they put on android while in apple devices its not there. As of battery life I am rooted and had better battery life since I installed a new ROM. You can check your data usage in settings → connections → data usage and also more about what's taking up your battery life in settings → general → battery. Hope this helps!

Power Management

Hi,
I'm wondering some things to optimize my battery life, but couldn't find any answers so far:
1) When Wifi and APN both are ON, Wifi will get priority. But the APN-setting is actually still on. Will it drain the battery, or should I always turn APN off when Wifi has been connected?
2) I have set Ultimate Juice (or Juice Defender) to turn on APN every 10 minutes during 1 minute to check for updates. But when I turn off APN, Juice Defender can't turn APN on himself to check for updates. That means that I have to remain APN ON. Doesn't that drain the battery, or is Juice Defender turning APN off on his own way?
3) I noticed that when the screen is off in standby, Android will turn off Wifi and APN. People are saying you should turn off APN and Wifi when not in use, but since Android turns both off while screen is off/standby mode, what's the use of turning both off manually? I think you could even turn them on all the time since they will get turned off when the screen goes black.
4) e.g. You're in a situation without any internet access. Apps like the Friends Stream, or Mail want to check for updates every 5 minutes. the consequence is they can't update because there's no internet connection. Does that action always drain the battery some more?
wtf no one??
under the wi fi advanced settings.. you can set wifi to never sleep... this should mean that your not using the apn connection...
I think apps try to update and if they do not succeed, it will be cancelled. I doubt the apps will continously check for updates until they get a fix. Same with Weatherbug. I sometimes see Weatherbug last updated hours ago, even when I have had internet access for the past hour (I have set it to update every hour). That was when I had unchecked 'enable always on mobile data'.
There are options available for wifi under advanced menu to set it to always stay on, or shutdown after 15 mins of sleep.
There is also an option available to always have data connection on. This will keep data connection alive even if phone is set to sleep.
Do you mean "mobile data connection" everytime you call it "APN"?
There's WiFi and that; two ways to access the net which pull power. WiFi can be disabled quickly and easily through the widget. So can the mobile data network: http://yfrog.com/0ymobilewidgetp
Leaving it to 2G when you don't need 3G or when 3G reception is bad saves much power. I'll need to do more experimentation before I can answer your other qs with assurance.

Help...Urgent!

Hi
My phone (HTC Desire HD) is acting very weirdly.
Problems
1. I cannot cannot connect to the internet via my mobile network. It says "use phone for data connection when Wi-Fi is unavailable". I have tried to fix this by doing various things such as doing a reset but nothing works.
2. I have a broadband connection (Wi-Fi) which requires an IP address to be entered. I cannot enter this IP address anywhere and I cannot insert my username and password anywhere in order to surf the internet.
3. I keep on receiving texts from a certain contact with information about my bill for my network service provider
4. My location is stuck on a location, I haven't been in almost a month.
5. My battery life is very poor even with mild usage.
Are these problems from the new update (Android 2.2.1)?.
Please how can I fix these issues?
Anyone have an idea when android 2.3 will be released for the DHD?
Thanks
bump - comon guys someone help me out!!
Hi,
1. What is your settings configuration right now ? (rooted phone, android version ?, did you flashed the ROM....)
2. For the wifi, it's really simple. Go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wi-Fi Settings and once here, you have to push the menu key, it will show an "Advanced button". After that you have to select "Use statis IP"....
5. For your battery life, perhaps you've installed too many apps and they are running in background (and consume power). Don't forget to turn off hardware functions you don't use (wifi, bluetooth, GPS...) and choose a brightness level not too high if you want to improve your battery life.
Thanks for the reply. I have a non rooted DHD running android 2.2.1
Ok.
Did you checked the "Mobile Network" option in the "Wireless and networks" panel ? otherwise it will never work

Data usage

My data usage has been rising. the day my data renewed, it instantly went up to 10 mb of data used in an hour.
If you go to Settings > Data Usage, you can see which applications use data on your phone. As the notice says, what is shown on the phone is the data measured by your phone, and your mobile provider may account for data usage differently. Still, it may help you pin point which apps consume most of your data. You then may want to delete the apps in question if you don't use them a lot, find replacement apps, or limit data usage for these apps to WiFi only -- to access this capability, an additionnal app will be needed; try searching the Play Store for this kind of tool.
I had the same issue but found the my wifi setting was to turn off in sleep mode, you can adjust this in your settings, it helped to change it to never turn off. Also, in the hidden wifi menu, make sure your wifi is set to on, you can access this by going to your keypad in the phone and typing *#0011#. Staying in wifi as much as possible is great, also, use your data toggle.

Click to collapse
While looking at the list of apps using the data, you can tap on the ones you don't want running data in background. A detail menu comes up, at the bottom there is a check box to disable background processes on mobile network.

Battery WIFI issue

hey guys maybe u can help me out
so according to GSAM battery Monitor
my WIFI is shown as active the whole day but my WIFI has been off the whole day. it has accounted for 7.8% battery drain even tho its off in the settings
even the HTC battery manager History shows a solid green bar all the way thru
im rooted with s-off and running android revolutionrom, this issue was occuring before my root and flash of the ROM, i was hoping that i rooted and flashed the ROM this problem will go away.
what do i do, you can see my wifi is off cuz the icon doesnt show in the status bar and i have ensured i have set it to off.
There is an option to Enable Scanning Even When WiFi Is Off. It enabled location services to use nearby wireless networks to triangulate you, but it leaves the wifi antenna active, even with WiFi switched off.
You can find this option under Advanced WiFi Settings.
awesome thanks

How to turn off Mobile Data Usage?

So I went into Settings -> Wireless Networks -> Data Usage... I wanted to try enabling the notifications, they seemed to work fine but I decided I didn't really need to be notified about data usage since switching to an unlimited plan, problem is I can't turn the data usage notifications off now? I can't change the data amount to nothing like it used to be before. Zero doesn't work either.
Anyone else run into this?
