Sup guys. I leave my location off on my phone. I was wondering if you can use the GPS for navigation on the 360 with the phones GPS off?

That's what I thought. So the watch doesn't have its own GPS chip?

Only bluetooth and a microphone, it's just an extension of your cellphone, but that's the only way to have reasonable battery life...

Future updates to both hardware and software.
Moto has this feature on the MotoActv but battery life is not good at all - we're talking hours, not days or even half days....

Is there any kind of app that will automatically turn on/off the mobile data network so that cell standby is not consuming so much of my battery power?
Tasker should work for that, it costs a few dollars but is definitely worth it

I've heard that tasker is a battery hog, is this true? Also, do you know where I could find a list of apps that are knows to drain the battery?
JuiceDefender! Been using it forever and everyone I have recommended it to loves it.

I second juice defender, it's free and effective.
Juicedefender ftw. But I sometimes disable that portion because I have a habit of data usage and distraction.. Which cuts me short. To his his own I guess

does it cut off 4G though?
Extended control does a nice job of it
Swyped from my EVO running CyanogenMod 6.1 RC 1
Just turn off "Enable always-on mobile data" in the settings. No app required. That alone extended my battery life by a few hours.

Second that. I have my weather and email sync every hour, so I don't even notice any ill effects. 3G stays off until you turn the screen on, or a preset sync is initiated.

Does it do a good job now? I was beta-testing at one point, and he was having issues getting the 4G toggle to work reliably.
Jellybean 4.1.1 & 4.1.2 CM ROM
With GPS turned on, switching from one GPS app to another it takes about 20 seconds for the app to relocate itsself. The GPS has to go thru the entire reacquire sequence.
It seems GPS (even if its turned on in settings) really only gets turned on and off when an app requests it forcing it to reacquire.
IMO the GPS should be turned on all the time if its ON in the settings.
Whats the point of the on switch if its not really on? If thats the case eliminate it. The app can handle GPS location ON OFF

That's crazy talk, do you have any idea what leaving GPS on all the time would do to battery life?

I leave mine on all the time. Of course I know which apps use it and I set them up accordingly

No, you have it enabled all the time. I do too, but it's only on when your apps are using it. You seem to understand that, but that's not what the OP is talking about.

I agree. I don't like that when you find a place in Google Maps and then Navigate to it, the GPS has to reacquire. There should just be a 10-20 second delay between closing a GPS app and the GPS actually turning off. Something like that.

Doesn't even need to keep it on. If it knows the last good fix was only 5 seconds old then it should use that as a pretty good start for your current location.
Completely agree open up maps, to look for something forgot the name go to google now... and waiting... just leave it on for 10 damn seconds i can live with 10 minutes less battery life

Actually in the previous version of Maps I was pleasantly surprised to notice that the hand-off from maps to navigation did not release the GPS lock.
I am not sure if they changed it back but my point being - hand-off from app to app can clearly be done more intelligently but again in the case of Maps we know that Navigation and Maps are the same app essentially so may be it was easier to do it.
The app already does handle turning GPS location on and off, that's not what the GPS permission toggle is for.
Every single time i open navigation I've got to start the gps or start it before hand. Many links I click take me to navigation then I need to click another window to enable gps. It'd be much easier if it was possible to create something like this that is semi automated.

It is automated just leave you GPS clicked on all the time. The only time the phone is using power and tracking your location is when it says it is in the status bar. You will see no negative to leaving GPS checked on all the time.
I won't sacrifice battery life doing that?

I leave gps on all the time..If an app isn't using gps it won't kill the battery.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
Thanks I'll give it a go and see how battery life is.
Dave
gotta be careful though a lot of apps want to use your gps google now and facebook for example try to use it almost continuously
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
The only time I see gps chewing up my battery significant is when I actually have navigation running, but then I usually have it charging off the car charger
Sent from my calculator watch.
Tasker will do that.
Tasker and or nfc launcher are the way to go
if you're stock, you just use the pull down to turn it off and on. It's more remembering to do it before launching navigation.
Just wondering what you guys are doing with tasker. Just bought the app and liking it.

I only use tasker on my phone to enable BT for 2 minutes every 30 minutes. that saves 1-3% battery per hour.

I'm not worried about battery life on my Zenwatch but more on my Note 4. Because I have bluetooth on by the time i get home battery is about 30% on my phone and my Zenwatch over 60% . The only issue I have with that is I get tons of text messages and I want them coming to my watch.

Just got my first smartwatch, the 360, yesterday.
Is there an app for tracking running/cycling without having to carry your phone around?
The Google Fit is very basic and gets calories very wrong when it comes to cycling. And Endmondo doesn't support standalone tracking for the 360 (would that becaome available with 5.1.1?). There are loads of apps in store but I can't install and check them all, anyone know of any?
Thank you

This one just takes HR every so often in "work out" mode, the only option on the watch.
I may be asking too much. Maybe with 5.1.1 update we'll see more (some) standalone running apps.
The watch has no GPS, and not the right kind of sensors to determine a distance traveled. All you would get out of an app on a watch is time and heartrate sensor recording.
Smartwatches are not powerful, they work by offloading anything they can to the phone.
I use RunKeeper for my runs and have my phone with me. Since the Moto 360 does not have GPS no GPS app will work on the watch without a phone.
For a stand alone app I have found that UP by Jawbone does a good job tracking activity. If I walk inside at lunch time it will notice I was active and ask if I did an activity and then will calculate the steps into what that activity was. It has like 20 different activities including cycling. I have found that the step count comes pretty close to calculating the correct distance for running or walking, but will not be as accurate as GPS.
Here is the thread on how to link your watch to UP!
