[Q] Force Closes after Updating to 4.4.2??? - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So first of all I i have the tab 3 7.0 wifi version. I updated it to 4.4.2 two days ago through kies and I've had problems ever since. For some reason a lot of system apps are constantly force closing or if you try to open them they close instantly. The main ones are settings, the status bar, the touchwiz stock launcher, the package installer and the list goes on. Sometimes I can't even boot into the stock recovery because when it's about to load it up it just reboots the system. I went back to stock using and tried updating ota to see if that was the problem and they're still force closing. Any ideas what's wrong? Should I try flashing it using odin or could it be something else?

Well dalvik can't be wiped in Stock recovery so nothing I can do there. Also for some reason the Android is laying down with a red triangle above it.

You should do a factory reset and wipe cache make and dalvik cache before flashing the firmware by odin, that way you will not have any problems.

No you have to have your phone rooted to perform a factory reset, if you know how to get into recovery mode on your terminal ?.

here you go
get in stock recovery
google it
once in stock recvory
go down to wipe cache press power when done
select factory reset press power
then reboot system press power
then set up works great then fresh out off box job done

I'm no noob to roms lol. That was the first thing I tried and it solved nothing. Now it's not even Kitkat. Any rom I flash seems to have this problem.

I flashed philz touch, wiped dalvik cache and cache. No go.

Bumping my post since I didn't get much help. If anybody has any ideas please let me know.
I've tried wiping system, cache, dalvik cache, and installing a rom in recovery (Nolekat) and also the 4.1.2 rom and 4.4.2 rom in odin. I do a complete wipe before flashing all of them and I still get force closes. Seems like my system is corrupted .

[Q] Installing Custom kernel + ROM?

Do I need to install the custom kernel before the ROM? Or is it the same if I install the custom ROM first?
when you flash, if using twrp, choose the rom and then the kernel.
If I have to wipe cache & dalvik cache after installing the ROM, do I wipe them after installing the ROM or after the kernel?

Here what I do: Install rom wipe cache /dalvik. Reboot. Let the rom load. Reboot to recovery, fix permissions, install kernel. reboot.

First, what is fixing permissions and how do you do it?
Second, don't you factory reset before installing the ROM and don't you wipe cache and dalvik after the kernel?
Finally, don't you have to factory reset before installing the kernel?
Sorry if I'm a little ignorant, but it's my first device I root...

Fixing permissions is not necessary. Factory reset is recommend when flashing a different ROM over your current but not always necessary when flashing a different version of the same ROM such as nighties. You don't need to reset or wipe anything before or after flashing a kernel.

So, basically, you have to factory reset, install the ROM, wipe cache and dalvik cache, boot to Android, reboot to TWRP, fix permissions, install the kernel, and finally reboot to Android?:good:

Step 1 - Factory resetting wipes the cache and dalvik cache.
Step 2 - Flash the ROM and kernel.
Step 3 - Reboot and you're done.
I couldn't find this problem elsewhere so I thought I would tack my question onto this thread since I am relatively new to this as well.
Don't custom roms normally include the Kernel?
I didn't realize you have to install them separately.
My tablet is currently unlocked and rooted with latest stock rom but I am having issues with it.
I used the WUS nexus root tool kit with the universal drivers. It rooted OK but to access the tablet during this process I had to have it in PTP and not MTP mode. During this process it kept connecting as a media device but now that it is done my computer won't see the tablet in either PTP or MTP mode.
Since I am unable to access the tablet from my computer as a USB drive I have been trying to push a custom rom (tried CM10.2 unofficial and paranoid android) and I get the same results no matter which I try. Although NRT is showing that it completed the action and I reboot the tablet it sticks at the boot up prompt. I either get the Crynogen animated boot screen for hours or the wierd stick drawn boot screen depending on which ROM I pushed.
I end up using NRT and putting the tablet back to factory which works fine. Then re root and try again using the same method and same results.
I have checked the root status and with the stock rom I am able to load super user and busy box and access a root prompt via terminal just fine.
Does using NRT to load the custom rom onto my tablet not work?
Just seems really weird to me.
And do I need to load the Kernel separate from the Rom?
Thanks!
(I may have to downgrade to 4.2.2 because one of my main reasons for this tablet was to try running Linux on it and apparently 4.3 doesn't work.)
Rodney
If you've managed to unlock the phone and flash a custom recovery with the toolkit, try flashing the ROM through the custom recovery instead of the toolkit. ROMs should come with kernels. The separate kernels are for when you want more/different kernel functionality than the one your ROM provides.

Ok, I would try but I currently can't see the tablet from my PC after rooting.. I tried another tool and still can't see the tablet. Probably have to remove the drivers and let it load its own driver or something.
Hey guys, so where does the Clockworkmod recovery come into the picture? I have rooted my phone, and that's all. ROM Manager doesn't automatically install CWM recovery into my phone because it's S2 I9100G and it doesn't have the CWM for the g-version.
Thanks!

Will not boot roms after clean up

Problem:
After installing a new rom, I get stuck at the Samsung screen during 1st boot.
Background:
I tried cleaning up the internal card memory, just what I could see from My computer, so I started deleting files. After that my problem began. I had a back-up of Albinoman887's 4.4 build from 12-24-2013 which boots. I cant install the new nightly build without the problem occurring
Attempts to correct.
Factory wipe / Delvik Wiped each time
I used odin to revert back to stock. Installed but would not boot.
Any thoughts ?

Because you need to do a full wipe from within recovery before you can install a different type of ROM. You can't just clean up files you can see through your computer. Also, full wipe is more than just factory reset and Dalvik cache.

I guess I should ensure that I am doing a "full wipe" properly. I suppose I am not doing it. How should I be doing a full? Like this? :
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Format /system

You haven't wiped the system partition in that description.
You need to wipe, system, data, cache, dalvik (battery stats isn't a real thing that needs wiping)
Then flash the ROM.
If none of that works, restore the whole thing back to stock in Odin and start over.

Your exact steps are dependent on which custom recovery you are using (e.g., CWM, TWRP, Philz Touch, etc.). For the custom ROMs I have tried the developer always included information in one of the first couple of posts explaining exactly how much wiping is required for that ROM and what specific steps to follow in CWM or TWRP. For a good example of this look carefully at jovy23's original post in this thread and you will see both TWRP and CWM sections:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292054
I've seen different definitions of "full wipe," one example of which is in the 6th post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410881
but, having said that, if your ROM's developer has specific instructions it's always a good idea to follow those. Good luck!

Flash your official firmware by downloading it from sampro.pl or sammobile.com, flash it with PC Odin under PDA tab.
After you done, don't let reboot your phone, goto recovery by pressing vol up+ menu key then power key(continuously hold it until your phone restarts, might be 4~8 secs.) Then check 'Wipe Cache Partition', and then reboot phone.

You've EFS backup as you said above, restore efs separately from recovery (Use Philz touch) in which you've to choose 'Custom Job' to restore EFS Contents. Then flash any rom you wanted to and then just wipe the cache partition, wipe Dalvik cache and you're done.
And if above method won't work give a try with Mobile Odin Pro follow procedure which I've posted above.

Nope... You've to flash a specific (your area/country) firmware to make your modem work. Otherwise you'll not get IMEI back. You've made a EFS backup, right?

Restore your EFS first, then flash any AOSP, CM based rom. At end wipe cache partition and Dalvik cache. Then reboot phone, wait don't setup your phone yet, again reboot your phone into recovery mode and then again clear cache and Dalvik cache and then reboot.
Use Philz Touch recovery, first must do 'Wipe data >> Clean to install a new rom'. I recommend you to use AOSB rom.

there's nothing you can do now. You have to use z3x or any other similar box to get ur imei back (rebuild nvdata). Even after having the correct IMEI you won't be able to make calls/texts/data (not registered on network error). The modem also needs to be patched by the box. If u don't have a box then take it to a phone repair shop. they'll fix it...but it's not permanent...the next time u flash a ROM you'll lose everything and take it to the shop again. EFS restore brings back the IMEI but the modem needs to be patched everytime u flash.

Can't install this package on top of incompatible data

Hello,
I am getting following error when i try to flash a ROM from TWRP 2.7.1 recovery. S3 is on ND8 and just rooted.
"Can't install this package on top of incompatible data. Please try another package or run a factory reset"
I tried to root it again so not sure what is going on. SuperSU working fine!
I couldn't really find any info about this so had to post new thread.
Any help will be appreciated

Same here

If you're flashing a rom from a different carrier or a different rom from the one you have, then do the factory reset. You have to wipe data anyways. Also cwm sucks, use philz or twrp.
I've now installed twrp

I've figured out how to get around this error.
So I've tried updating my version of cyanogenmod from one nightly to another and I get the same problem as you "can't install package on top of incompatible data. Please try another package or run a factory reset" and I didn't want to reset my phone every day an update came out so I decided to test something and it worked.
So here's how to do it:
1. Backup System and Data with twrp (to internal, micro sd, or usb otg)
2. Wipe System, Data, cache, dalvik cache with twrps advance wipe ( wipe/advance wipe
3. Flash the update.
4. Now flash things from what you had had on the system before (EG: Google apps, SuperSU)
5. Restore Data from the backup from before and wipe the cache and dalvik cache
This worked for me and hopefully for you. So this is a work around for this problem but I don't know how to actually fix the "bug".
P.S I've only tested it on twrp so I don't know if you can do this with other recoverys
hi. trying to flash a CM build to a samsung galaxy note 10.1 2014. I get the "can't install package on top of incompatible data. Please try another package or run a factory reset" error. I saw here to try a factory reset before flashing. did that, then flashed (which seemed go really fast - a few seconds). now, after reboot, I get a blank screen. I backed up the system I had, so I think I can get back to working. but why didn't flashing CM work? any ideas?
I had this problem as well.
Solution was to "format data" in the advanced setting in TWRP. I couldn't find a solution in Cyanogenmod recovery.
After that the rom flashed and now it's all working fine.

I don't know about Cyangenmod but I overcame this issue in PhilZ by running "Clean to install new ROM" in the wipe menu.
I wiped the whole internal storage with the advanced wipe options of TWRP and was able install Cyangenmod afterwards.

Have any one already tried it, does it fix the sluggish performance issue and lagged animations? last time I was having even overheating problems in 12.0.1.0QGGEUXM, so I downgraded to MIUI11.0.3.0PGGEUXM.

It's only security patch and control center update.
So I highly doubt it will fix any of your problems.
Did you have a clean installation of miui 12? Or ota?
I've been experiencing zero problems on 12.0.1.0QGGEUXM.

I updated via ota then did a factory reset through recovery, but overheating issue, sluggish animations and poor battery performance (4-5h SoT) came back after a few days, in Miui 11 android 9 with the same amount of apps I get between 8-10 hours of screen on time and zero overheating plus really fluid animations.

Strange, I have better battery life than android 9.
10 hours SOT easily and zero lag or overheating issues. Camera got a lot better too. Anyways, I highly doubt this update will change any of the problems for you. So stay on Miui 11 android 9

Thanks for your reply, yes I don't know why but Miui 11 android 9 was the sweet spot for my phone, android 10 decreased the battery life and Miui 12 killed the performance, I guess I will have to wait, Android system has always been my biggest battery drainer on any Miui version.

No, you can't flash miui rom from cfw recovery.
You'll have to flash a full miui fastboot rom.
I'm on CFW and rocking a custom ROM. How do I go back to MIUI?
Flash a full MIUI Fastboot ROM, or use SP Flash tools to install the flash all MIUI partitions. Again, do not flash a recovery package for switching to MIUI.
See next post for full step-by-step instructions.

Read the cfw topic:
something gone wrong
I for sure done something wrong... these are the steps I followed:
- Reboot to recovery
- In TWRP mount system, cache, dalvik, vendor
I mounted system, cache, vendor. No dalvik in the list.
- Format system, cache, dalvik, vendor.
I wiped system, cache, dalvik and vendor
- Flash full recovery rom (not OTA)
I flashed the zip file downloader from the link in the post
- Mount system (yes, again)
- Go to Advanced > file manager
- Go to system_root > system and delete "recovery-from-boot.p"
- Go home and again go to advanced and Select "Close AVB2.0" swipe to confirm.
- Flash magisk 20.4
- Reboot the device to system.
OK
Now settings app is called "Adjust size" and if I open it, it is not full screen but a centered window.
Facebook Services always stop working.
I'm wondering if I must do a clean flash... :|

Did you flash full zip? Not OTA? Correct version: EU or global?
Try rebooting first to twrp and clear cache and dalvik if you flashed correct full rom.
Yes, I flashed the full zip. After trying for a while, I decided to reflash everything... so I don't know if a reboot and flash cach and dalvik could resolve the situation.
Anyway, just for curiosity, I reinstalled the with miflash the 12.0.1.0.QGGEUXM, then I rerooted the phone trying to recreate the same situation like before the bad update. So I refollowed the steps to update and now everything as worked fine.
I don't know what I have done wrong before, but now everything works good...
I'm sorry I can't be more useful, when I do these things, flashing reflashing rooting I feel myself like a super hacker but I do everything at random, it's a miracle that I don't have to buy a smartphone every month... XD

I have the update showing.
mine takes a while to download but does ok
when I then update it just keeps saying cannot download please try again in a few minutes
I then tried to update picking it from the downloaded location
this did the same also
then tried to download latest package
this did exactly the same
also tried the one from the xiaomi downloads section
this also does exactly the same
put messages on the official forums but no one has an answer
I'm not really bothered about the update as there doesn't seem much in it anyway its just more annoying that its now constantly telling me about the update
thanks
