Frequently Asked Questions Verizon HTC One (M7) - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Frequently Asked Questions
Verizon HTC One (M7wlv)
This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.
Q1: What's the difference between "Development" and "Original Development"?
Here are the rough guidelines as to what should be placed in "Original Development":
*Official release of highly original and upstream custom ROMs (built from the ground up with significant original development within them).
*Official releases/development of such original ROMs, perhaps posted by the maintainer or their nominated person.
*A significant "first" in development for a device. This is something which took considerable time/effort and is generally accepted by developers to be non-trivial.
*Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are not simply pulled from other kernels already available.
*Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made, and useful to users. They should have an element of originality, either in purpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
*Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to the users of the target device.
All other development work goes into "Android Development".
Q2: can I SIM unlock this phone for other carriers?
The m7wlv comes SIM unlocked out of the box. It only works on certain frequencies. See if your carrier supports the below frequencies.
CDMA: 800/1900MHZ,
UMTS/HSPA: 900/2100MHz,
GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900MHz,
LTE: 700MHz (Band 13)(only Verizon uses this LTE band thus far)
Q3: Why did you refer it to m7wlv?
That is the board code name. It is also referred to as the m7vzw (named after the carrier) and HTC6500LVW (Model name, also seen in build prop as HTC6500LVWBLU for the Best Buy blue variant). You can call it what you want as it still means this model.
All names said above are used in the build.prop file. When you refer to a device, you usually refer it with the board name, which is m7wlv
Q4: Is root possible with (OS version here)?
Even though Verizon has blocked HTCdev access to unlock our bootloaders, thanks to jcase, beaups, and a few others, every release is unlockable and can attain S-off status.
Rumrunner(1.10.605.2, 1.10.605.8, 1.10.605.10, 1.10.605.15)
Firewater(2.10.605.1, 3.11.605.1)(Firewater shut down, so use Sunshine for these two firmwares as well)
Sunshine(4.10.605.3, 5.28.605.2) (costs $25 after successful test to ensure unlock and S-off works for the release version)
To find your firmware version, go to settings - about phone - software version.
Q5: I have x issue and need to return to stock, How do I do this?
Be sure you read and follow directions closely! There has been many incidences where people didn't follow the instructions and had a permabrick on their hands! Do NOT go S-on until you are 100% sure you are fully stock from a good RUU flash.
How to: return to stock Locked/S-On
Q6: I am having an issue with data/wifi/call signal. Should I return it as it is defective?
There is an uncommon occurrence on newer HTC devices where they sometimes get signal issues after a new ROM flash. This isn't hardware related (90% of the time). Something happens where the radio partition gets corrupt after a ROM flash. The way to resolve this is:
Back up your /system and /data partition in custom recovery
reboot to bootloader
Plug your phone into the PC
Flash stock recovery from here
Flash radio/firmware from here
type "fastboot erase cache"
Perform a "Factory Reset" by selecting the option from bootloader
Flash your custom recovery
restore /system and /data
Q7: I don't want to unlock or S-off yet. How can I install the latest OTApkg.zip (I am not on Verizon's network)?
Even without s-off and no root, you can still utilize the OTApkg.zip.
You need to put it on your device's storage.
Boot to stock recovery, exclamation point/phone image appears, then press volume up and power to get to the stock recovery menu.
Choose install update from sd card.
Select OTApkg.zip and let it do its thing.
There is another method I recently just did personally. The new HTC Sync app will search for updates on our phone and prompt to install the most recent update. The app will download the update and install it automagically for you. It doesn't matter what version you are on, it will update to the latest update the first time without having to install each one individually.
Q8: Help! How do I recover from this brick?
What was the last thing you did before your device wouldn't boot?
I was going to flash a custom rom. I wiped everything, even internal storage! Why can't we have an external SD card?!
All is not lost!
while in recovery:
Put your ROM file in the same folder as ADB
"adb push your_rom_filename.zip /sdcard/"
Back out so you can click on the install file on sdcard option and viola...
I don't know what I did! I cannot get into recovery, or boot up past the HTC splash screen!
Never Fear!
RUU to the rescue! Follow that link and the instructions precisely. WARNING: doing and RUU will wipe the internal SD and return the phone to "Out of box" condition (except you will still be s-off and unlocked)
Q9: After I rooted and flashed a custom recovery, I have this annoying red text on boot up. How do I get rid of this?
This thread is your saving grace on getting rid of that pesky "developer warning"
Q10: I bought this phone off someone and do not have a proof of purchase, is my warranty still valid?
When the device is first booted up and "set up," it sends HTC the serial Number and IMEI. HTC knows approximately when the phone was first purchased by this info. This means you do not need to be the original owner, or have the original proof of purchase. The warranty is still valid if it is within the warranty time period.
Q11: My camera has an odd purple tint! What can I do to fix this?
This is a common issue with the HTC One. It is a manufacture defect. There is solutions that may mask the issue, but it is only temporary and it will get worse over time.
Contact HTC support and get a replacement/repair.
Note: I talked to a Rep today about a different issue and brought up the infamous camera issue. HTC support supervisors (HTC North America at least) have instructed their employees to accept camera warranty claims even for phones out of the warranty period. This means if you get the purple tint and you are out of warranty, you can still send it in!
Q12: What is the best kernel/ROM for this phone?
Stop, do not pass go. There is no "best" anything. We all have different tastes and want different features or perks. Saying one Rom is the best for me, will not be the best for anyone else. Someone might want a powerhouse "performance trumps all" setup, while someone else could care less about a thousand or more on their antutu score and would want to squeeze every minute of battery life they can.
Read the features and benefits of every Rom (or kernel) and see what suits you best. Never ask which is best, they all are great.

The official code name for the Verizon one is wlv (just check what it says when you do fastboot getvar all). Unofficially, people use the term vzw as that is the Carrier it is branded for. I will add that info in the FAQ.
Sent from my One using XDA Free mobile app

Wlv essentially stands for world LTE Verizon. Sprint is wls. We have wwe phones. Other carriers and European ones are u and ul. U for universal gsm, and ul for universal lte.

Added the time old question almost every new person asks when they freshly root their shiny phone.
If you see a question you have seen asked in the m7wlv (or even the m7u forum that applies to us) that I missed, let me know, and I will mention you in the change log for that question.

Added a note to OP. It is also below. I had to contact HTC support for an issue with my wife's phone, and found some nice info. Also suggested to HTC about adding DSP to stock. The tech said they accept suggestions to improve their products. Hopefully they listen to it...

Edited Q7 to add a new method to update the phone when not on Verizon's network. I stumbled across this one when returning my wife's phone to stock (I like using the signed 2.x.y.z ruu)

Raise Concerns to HTC - HTC Restricting Full unlock (S-OFF)

Today I spotted this blog item http://blog.htc.com/2012/04/your-phone-your-thoughts-tell-us-what-you-think/ I think we should start post our concerns about not being able to gain a proper unlock.
(1) fastboot boot awesomeRecovery.img (this works because fastboot then boots recovery on the boot/temporary partition. So the you're not actually in recovery mode
(2) Offmode (this works because again you're again not technically in recovery mode. It uses the recovery ramdisk, kernel, and binaries but its still not technically recovery.
On that note I've seen suggestions that it's possibly a recovery issue with cwm and twrp. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be the case. If it were then in CWM u wouldn't have usb when u fastboot boot the recovery or in offmode (fair assumption since both these options use the same kernel, ramdisk and binaries as recovery?). Can it be fix? Not that i know of. It looks to me like a total radio or bootloader lockout from using USB in recovery. Which means on a radio or bootloader level USB is disabled in recovery mode.
On that note I think we should raise the point to HTC that this locking down of the device does not suite our needs.Key points of fail would be as follows.
(1) Can NOT flash the boot partition from recovery. I've personally contacted HTC on this numerous times and they seem to just not care. Responding with "It's a security issue" and so forth. I would love to know how this is a security issue of any sort. Every other Android device has this ability except HTC devices since they started the HTC unlock ordeal. It's utter fail IMHO and HTC should listen to our needs .
(2) Can NOT flash recovery or boot partitions from system. This issue is NOT a deal breaker and isn't so bad when it comes down to the nitty gritty. But since the issue above exists, flashing with applications like htc dumlock and such were our only options. These work around apps cant be used to flash now because of the lockpout from system and it wouldn't be such an issue if HTC didnt lock us out in recovery from flashing boot.
(3) Can NOT flash P*IMG.zips in hboot/bootloader anymore. For the unlocked device running a custom firmware this is a must. Specially when radio updates and such are needed from the OEM. We seen a big use of this on the Sensation when HTC updated the device from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. The update required new hboots, radios, and partitioning to actually use. So in that instead of having to flash a RUU Which didn't exist the only choice was to flash a custom P*IMG.zip that included all the radios and images need to run the builds. At this point we can't update those image/partitions without flashing an RUU. This makes no since and doesn't seem to do anything but make things more difficult on the unlocker to customize and modify their device.
(4) If all the conditions above HAVE to exist. Then why not give us documentation or utilities to flash fimware.zips from recovery like HTC does? When HTC was the proud Nexus device there was full support and documentation available on how to flash firmware on their devices. This made anyone choosing an HTC device blessed with knowing that their device was not only open and unlocked, but when flashing firmware that it was being flashed correctly to Google and HTC's standards. This code has now been moved out of recovery since right before the move to edify scripting and moved to vendor/htc/ (not arguing this choice as thats where it belongs from a maintaining point of view). But the problem is that vendor/htc is proprietary now. Which means Documentation and support for flashing firmware correctly is not available and left to developers of recoveries for the community to figure out. One would think if HTC was standing behind us that they would step up and give us a PROPER/OPEN/REAL unlock, or if they cant for the lame excuse of security concerns, then give us the documentation and utilities to flash the boot and firmware partitions properly. I mean really... what is there to lose there?
(5) WHAT WAS THE POINT OF HTC UNLOCK? It was to reach out and accept us as a community. It was to keep us from having to exploit their firmware and look for holes to gain control of a device we rightfully own. WHAT DID HTC UNLOCK DO? It unlocked the devices at first and with each new revision of the unlock it gets more locked down and harder for us to use it as intended. WHAT DOES THAT LEAD TO? It leads to us hoping someone will take the time out of their life and exploit HTC's firmware so we can have access and control of our devices. I mean, it's bad when u have people poking a device with a paperclip to get a device unlocked to avoid a official unlock.
Bottom line; I'm personally fed up with HTC's unlock. It's absolute crap! It does not serve the purpose it was intended and only makes things harder then they were before. As a devoted HTC customer it has me questioning if my next device will be an HTC. With all the other options that would allow me to spend less time trying to gain proper access to my device and more time actually having fun with it, why choose HTC? Everyone else is shying away for these same issues. Everyone with an HTC unlocked device waits for someone to exploit HTC's firmware and give them a proper unlock. Why not just choose a device without the locked down/unlock instead? IDK but HTC needs to step up and listen to us. Every HTC forum with an HTC Unlock is screaming for these issues to be fixed.
My call to HTC is to fix these issue and/or give us proper documentation on flashing firmware to our devices via custom recoveries. The boot flashing lockout is dumb, pointless, and in NO WAY a security threat AT ALL and is nothing more then a CRAP RESPONSE to something that they sould be working to correct, instead of ignoring. In the end its hurting HTC's relations with developers and is ultimately doing the opposite of what it's original intent.
HTC, PLEASE READ AND LISTEN!!!11ONEone
To everyone else, SPREAD THE WORD!!!ONEone
This is the future of HTC unlock and each new device it gets worse. Maybe HTC will listen and address these issues, then again maybe we will just need to find another OEM that supports us and does listen

"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC
Please S-Off your devices as promised, your unlock is not a true unlock and it is still heavily restricted. We can't flash official RUUs in this weak htc-dev unlocked state! Please fulfil your promise!
You have some valid points, but you do realise us tinkerers aren't htc's only customers right? Most businessmen now use smartphones like the one X and they certainly do not fiddle with their phones, nor do they accept that their phone comes with serious security flaws potentially opening their device up to strangers or corporate espionage. This point, however, could be used both for and against this fact. For example, if HTC officially provided S-OFF via htcdev then they could avoid people developing exploits for their device while also causing the device to be factory reset when it is applied. The downside of this is their products could get a reputation for being unstable or whatever (people seeing my device for example, and getting the idea that all one X's are on the verge of exploding)
That doesn't seem to be an issue for Google or Samsung, so I don't think its a really valid point.

I understand mate .. That's why the S-OFF should be optional. I personally working in a co-operate enviorment most of the them won't go for Android since our enterprise applcation doesn't work well (Like deployment of software apps etc.) most of them prefer Blackberry for Windows based phone. That's why Windows 8 phone comes with secure boot and large scale application deployment with same tools used in Windows so they can convert the remaining BB users to Windows. Android has a long way to get attention from enterprise users. For now think it's an entertainment OS. Sony went a long way in this case they allow complete unlock even help FreeXperiaTeam with development of CM. Sooner or later our devs will find a way to S-OFF why not HTC offer it proactively and creative a good will against devs like Sony did.
S-off on any HTC phone do not I repeat do not open any other security issue ie a business would not leave such possibility open some business develop there own software for phones etc and still do they was doing it with the old pda phones and HTC pda phones with HTC to stop locking there phones allows this option again to a business.
A business wouldn't leave a device open as they would lock them there selfs via encryption etc so people arguing over its opening security holes is an invalid point other devices are open ie Samsung etc so why not HTC all other HTC that have been exploited to allow the same hasn't broken any security regarding networks or the ability to change serials etc as this info is on a write once chip and can not be over written like some other devices in past
The reply from HTC ceo has just made my day it's great news I just hope it true to the word
And believe it or not there loads of corporate business are using android devices to its full existent well here in the uk they are as its such a powerful operating system and not just for entertainment I speak from experience I use my phone for business and use a lot of business apps etc so my phone is not just for entertainment purposes etc
Everyone's concern over security is a fair statement but not valid reason not to unlock and am glad to hear HTC agree now.

(Discussion) The Fragmentation of Galaxy S4 devices

I wanted to start a discussion about one thing that I see as a drawback to Samsung development. I'd love to hear peoples thoughts about it and what their experience was on previous Galaxy devices.
I just got this incredible beast of a phone last Tuesday...and....I LOVE it.
This is my first Sammy device, coming from all HTC phones for the last several years. One major thing that has concerned me is the lack of cohesive development, simply due to the fact that Samsung releases so many variants of the GS4 (or do they?).
The one main thing HTC has going for them in regards to phones & development, is that there is usually only one main forum for all your needs. For instance, my old Sensation...all you have to do is SuperCID & have S-OFF and you can flash any ROM you want, regardless of carrier etc. Even though there were several varieties of the Sensation (XE etc), if you had SuperCID...your ROM options were endless. Look no further than the development forum for the One...quite frankly, it is incredible the amount of custom stuff that is available in that forum. Even before the phone was widely released, there were about 2 dozen of XDA's great devs, modders, themers, already pumping out ROM's & Kernels & Mods etc etc. All this with very little confusion or fuss on how to root and or what you can or can't flash etc.
I wish it were as simply as that for us. I can only imagine how amazing development would be for the S4, if it wasn't split up into 4-5 different forums.
Lastly...I would love to know if it will ever be possible to flash anything that's for the I9505 (for instance the ROM from Indie). If the GS4 can have SuperCID, or something similar...why would this not be possible?? Of course we've all heard that we should NEVER flash anything that's not specific to our Tmo GS4...and leaves me wondering just how involved development will be for the Tmo GS4. My question would be why is that not possible if the hardware is the same....regardless of carrier? What are the restrictions to flashing anything I9505 related...and will it ever be possible? Is there an actually hardware difference in the German Tmo I9505 and the US Tmo I9505??
I simply look at it from a perspective of less devs in one spot, means less development for each variant...and that kinda bums me out a bit.
Love to hear what you guys think about this...
Cheers! :good:
Blame the US carriers for split forums.

The T-Mobile version is not the i9505, it is he M919. The i9505 is subtly different and is the only model of the GS4 to contain an FM radio.
The fragmentation is due in part to what the previous poster noted; us carriers; and LTE. The Sensation was not ever released on CDMA networks, it was GSM only and all models had the same hardware, including the actual radios. This is why the development was in one section, because all the devices were the same hardware, with only slight software differences depending on region/carrier.
The i9500 is the technological dream of the masterminds at Samsung flexing their muscles as a super power. The vast majority of the components are made directly by them including the revolutionary CPU and screen. I cannot think of any other company that does this. The entry model on these units is rarely catered to the us market (think original GS2, GS3, original Note) and usually sees a second generation to add support for CDMA and or LTE (Think carrier branded GS2, GS3, Note).
The I9505 & Carrier branded versions utilize a different SoC to accommodate for global demand. Most qualcomm chips these days are being mass produced and have LTE/CDMA worked out in their design initially. I makes it easy for sammy to push out more units in a quicker amount of time.

You're spot on. I had the HTC Sensation as well. I currently have the HTC One. I can def say that HTC retains the crown when it comes to consumer development. They even launched a website to unlock your device in response to so many requests for it.
What has Samsung done? Well, most recently they pushed an update that locked out root at the kernel level. Boo!
From what I've seen thus far (and yes I know it's still early) there has been a very weak response in the dev department for the T-Mobile variant of this device. It has been out for a couple of weeks now and we still don't have a PIT file posted anywhere. So if anyone hit a worst case scenario, they would be unable to fully wipe their phone and use an ODIN tar to return to stock. On that note, we don't even have a virgin untouched tar of the stock firmware (MDL that has tweaked kernel) for ODIN. A couple of the deodexed and zip-aligned flashable packages that were posted have slight changes made to them - we NEED untouched flashable zips. Don't post something as "stock" if you have modified the firmware.
All in all, we have had a very rocky start on this T-Mobile variant. I'm contemplating buying the device for a couple of the old Team Whiskey guys and starting our own team for this. There is a lot of work to be done, yet. And this device has a lot of potential.
Some of you may be offended by this and some of you may be rolling your eyes. That's fine. But these are my two cents.
On a brighter note... I'm hoping for a massive response once source drops.

Wrong. There is already stock ODIN files on here and sammible. You do not need a .pit to flash an MD5 and the T-Mo Note 2 didn't have one either in the dev sections. Yes Samsung has included a new revision in their kernel to lock out root access, big deal. We are a group of developers here dedicated to outsmarting the man and doing things our own way. The i9500 already has the newest kernel built from source with the 1 flag (yes, it's one flag) circumvented. HTC doen't even have an official RUU available yet, and their HTC dev site records your IMEI to refuse you warranty service lol. I would suggest you read up some more before offering up your two cents, because based on what you stated they are without warrant, and worthless.
Here's a link to the stock ODIN file since you missed it, http://www.hotfile.com/dl/213469534/9ff06bd/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip.html

No... I don't think you understand.
Of course you don't "need" a PIT file. But do you understand what that is used for? I encourage you to try this.
1. Run the latest update. The virgin, str8 from kies, MDL update. You'll have the root-block kernel and everything.
2. Now try to ODIN back to the previous firmware using THIS MDB tar file.
I think you will find you are unable to successfully return to the fully stock MDB firmware. That tar file alone will not wipe anything. It will seem to flash via ODIN. But once you reboot... you'll still have your MDL firmware installed (sorta). You might suggest installing CWM or TWRP Recovery here. Well... you can try. I did. You will run into some interesting issues. LIke not being able to get into ANY recovery until you perform a full reset from within the system settings menu. Then suddenly finding your way into the stock android recovery. At which point you'll do a factory reset/wipe from the stock android recovery. Then you WILL be able to install CWM Recovery and flash... oh wait. There is no completely stock flashable firmware package. Those we do have are found HERE and have had things removed.
I'll give you another example. Let's say you soft brick your phone. You need to do a restore via ODIN. But you also need to wipe it completely. What are you going to do? You can't get to recovery. Can't load the system. You need to do a full wipe and factory restore. How are you doing to do that without the Partition Information Table and ODIN?
As for warranty... technically we're all void of warranty so why does it matter? We all void the warranty as soon as we start flashing. That is why all the devs put that disclaimer in their OPs.
Furthermore, while its kinda cool that you went straight into defensive mode, I wasn't bashing anyone. I'm just saying we need to pick it up and get the right files out there for the ppl who don't know how to fix things on their own and so forth. If I need to I'll take one of my computers off of Folding and turn it into a dev box so I can help out.
Love, Peace, and Chicken Grease :good:
All you need is the ODIN file I provided (MDL). After that you can enter the stock recovery and wipe the data as needed.
If you are completely bricked (cannot enter download mode) Samsung will warranty the phone for a new one.
It's not defensive that I am being. I could careless if you brick your phone lol, I am only providing facts that you seemed to miss.
The .pit file is usually used if you have borked the phone from all recognition and need to tell the device what to flash where as it sets the maps for the partitions.
Your original post said nothing of having to wipe or anything else you just disclosed which is still incorrect to an extent.
We all know that stock ODIN files do not wipe data, but with the files I posted you will not need to go back to a lower firmware in the 1st place and will not be locked out of the system or recovery....
If you are concerned with a stock .pit file, make one from Heimdall. Or, are you one of the ones "who don't know how to fix things on their own" ?

Nah. Benji was cleaning up the code last night. But he did tell me that Heimdall 1.4 will be officially released in a few hours. And that he confirmed it working on his Sprint S4. Previous versions wont detect our snapdragon device.
As for your MDL ODIN file, you're still missing the point. But im going to drop it.

the s-off via java card support thread(service available)

not wanting to wait for a software exploit that may never come, user Sonic2756 has stepped up and purchased an htc service card,or java card,to provide the vzw one community with a "right now!" s off option. make sure yuo thank him in this thread: Purchased a JavaCard for S_OFF
read this:
Sonic has recently decided to extend the offer to other devices for which a software exploit does not exist. *PLEASE post in his thread and ask him if he has the diag file for your particular MID before purchasing a credit
ALSO NOTE that this service is being offered to US customers only, unless other arrangenments are made with him prior.

you may purchase an s off credit here: http://htc.s26tech.com/
this method uses an official htc java card to turn off the phones security data. the card exists as a legitimate tool for cell phone shops and re-sellers,primarily for the purpose of removing the phones simlock.
since this method of s off is somewhat unusual, this thread is intended to help support folks that are unsure of the differences and similarities.
first and foremost, these are my words, sonic has not helped with these posts, tho i hope he will let me know if theres anything he wants changed. if any info you see here and use melts your phone into a little pile of aluminum goo,its not sonics fault, nor is it mine. use this info at your own risk.
in this first post,i thot a few FAQs needed to be put in one place,as they are being asked over and over again in the thread.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: what is s off?what does it do for me?
A: in a nutshell,s-off=security off. it removes all security checks and allows access to all partitions of the phone this means you can:
-change hboot
-change splash inage
-change radios
-flash unsigned files
-go backwards in firmware versions
-other things that maybe ill add later
Q: is this legit??
A:yes,it is. as mentioned above, the java card is a legitimate tool used by some large cell phone repair shops and re-sellers.
Q: how does this work?
A:the java card is plugged into a USB On The Go cable, and plugged into the phone. the java card contains htc-signed diagnostic files wich are used to clear security data. when the phone is booted to hboot with the java card plugged in,it finds the diagnostic file and jumps to a mode where the user can clear "s58" data. this removes any simlock, changes the CID to a generic "supercid",and most importantly, turns off the phones radio secure flag. hooray!
this not sonic, nor is this an htc one. it is a one X using the same method,it will give you a good idea what the process looks like:
HTC One X S-OFF
Q: what exactly is a java card?
A: simply,a java card is an sd card with a microprocessor in it. if someone wishes to provide a more detailed definition,id be happy to put it here. a bit more info here
Q: can we clone the java card so everyone can have s off?
A: yes. but its complicated, and the card to begin with is expensive. there have been some technical discussions about this in sonic's original thread. the simple answer is that it is not easy,or practical to clone the java card.
Q: why do i have to pay for this?? shouldnt s off be free?
A: if you have a prollem paying for this service, you are welcome to purchase your own java card and offer the service for free. as has been stated, the java card is expensive- upwards of $1000 depending how may credits are included.
further, even if a software exploit was available,it is good custom to donate to the devs who brought you the tool. remember,no one here owes you custom roms,s-off,etc. support your devs and what they bring you. in this case, sonic has purchased an expensive htc tool, shipping supplies, and has to invest a great deal of time getting your phone s-offed,packed up,and hauled back to the post office. not to mention the website he has set up for the service. there is nothing wrong with making his $$ back, and a bit extra for his time and efforts.
Q: is the card good forever?
A: NO! the java card has a limited number of uses. he has stated he can sell about 250 s off services, and do 10 developer phones for free. after those credist are gone, you are SOL unless a new exploit is found,or there is enuff interest for sonic to buy a second card.
Q: how do i know how many credits are left?
A:Sonic's website shows the number of avaiable spots left, right above the quantity select/add to cart,in the "product description". simply go to the website, then click the htc one picture.
Q: how do i use this service?
A:go to his website and purchase an s off service. http://htc.s26tech.com/
Q: where do i send my phone?
A: his address is on his website: http://htc.s26tech.com/about/
Q: if im allready unlocked, should i still get s off?
A: in my opinion, yes. s off is better. it allows more options to recover soft-bricked devices, and allows access to all partitions. an s on phone is still doing plenty of security checks. it also allows a permantly installed recovery to install the boot image. the downside is that your phone WILL let you brick it if your not careful. know what your flashing and why. double check md5 sums to verify the integrity of your downloads. a corrupt bootloader ot radio can damage your phone, potentially unrecoverably. if you just asked "what is an md5sum?" stop and google it now. there are numerous md5summers avaialable for free on the vast interweb, download one and start using it.
Q: if im allready unlocked and running a custom rom and recovery,do i need to take any precautions?
A: yes. the diag file is designed to work on stock software and firmware. i would strongly recomend to:
-restore a bone stock nandroid,or flash a bone stock rom
-reflash your stock recovery
-reflash your stock boot image if you were running a custom kernel
-select 'factory reset' option from hboot
Q: will this wipe my phone?
A: yes it will. so back up your sd card to the pc,and be prepaired to have to re-set everything up when you get it back.
Q: does my phone need to be active?
A: no it does not.
Q: do you need my sim card?
A: no he does not.
Q: what is the turn around time?
A: again, these are my words. from the thread,5-7 days. please remember sonic has real life activities to attend to,so you may want to wait until the initial wave has subsided. if he has alot of phones to do,it may take him longer.
Q: im a tight ass,can i use cheaper shipping?
A: yes,you can. the initial shipping is picked and paid for by you. be as tight as you want. the return shipping is priority mail with $600 worth of isurance. if you have such faith in the united states post office, and humanity that you do not feel this is needed, then you can chose the cheaper return shipping option sonic has provided.
Q: how do i activate a spare phone while mine is away?
A:it depends on the phone. if you have another 4g vzw phone, you can simply swap over your active sim. if the sim is larger in the spare phone, adapters do exist for extremely cheap on ebay and amazon. alternately, you can call vzw or go to their website to activate an older 3g device.
Q: how do i activate my phone when it comes back?
A: like you normally would. s off by itself does not change anything about the phone or how it oporates. its what you do afterward/modify that can have an impact on "normal" operation. so if you moved your sim into another phone, just move it back. if you mailed your phone directly to sonic with the protective film still on it,then take everything out of the box and activate just like you would if it had just come from vzw.
Q: will i be able to unlock the bootloader if my phone is s off?
A: yes. when the phone comes back,it will have "supercid". this ignores the mid(model id) check that htcdev does on the phone, and will let you get a token and unlock.
Q: are there advantages to unlocking the bootloader?
A: you have a couple extra fastboot commands you can use:
fastboot flash partition imagename.img
and
fastboot boot imagename.img
these commands are useful to install recovery, and boot images into phone memory. with fastboot bootfor example, you can temporarily launch recovery on the phone to flash su if you dont want to permantly install it.
Q: so do i NEED to unlock the bootloader to install recovery?
A: no,you do not. you can install recoveries and all other partitions as zip files. more info on that later.
Q: does superCID give you any benefits?
A: on a gsm device where you have multiple carrier and regional firmwares that will work, supercid is of value. with a device on vzw,you can only use vzw ruus anyway since this is a unique cdma/lte device. further, accepting an OTA with supercid could leave you unrecoverably bricked, plus it may interfer some some verizon functions(i remember inc 4g users having issue, but the details escape me)
IMO,you should change your CID back to stock afterward. if you do not know your stock CID,you should check it prior to sending off your device. you can find it with fastboot getvar all or fastboot getvar cid. if you wish to "debrand" your phone, you can always change it to a somewhat universal HTC__001 (2 underscores)
Q: is my cid unique to my particulare phone?
A: no,it is not. it is unique to a carrier or region.
Q: how do i change my cid back to stock?
A: with this fastboot command:
fastboot oem writecid xxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxxx is your stock cid)
Q: why is my cid always present on the hboot screen?
A: i dont know htc's logic, but this is simply what the phone does while its s off. it will display whatever your cid is,and is not dependent of your bootloader being locked or unlocked.
Q: what about the TAMPERED and unlocked/relocked badges?
A: if your phone was unlocked when you sent it in, youll get it back factory fresh locked. the tampered badge,i am unsure of at this time, and will update as more info is obtained.
if you sent in a brand new phone,it obviously wont be different(with exception of s off)
one of the big advantages of s off,is that the tampered flag is not triggered by adding a custom recovery or kernel, and since s off removes the various write protections that exist,it is posible to reset either flag. more info on the lock status flag here
Q: will an OTA change my s-off or lock status?
A: it is possible. altho,it is highly unlikely since turning the radio secure flags on via an OTA would also do so on legitimate test phones.
however...
it really is not reccomended that you try and take an OTA while rooted. a custom recovery is unable to install HTC's OTA pacakage, and attempting to do so ca jam you up horribly. taking an OTA with bloat and system files remove will typicaly result in failure, and taking an OTA with supercid could lead to a processor "do not boot" mode, wich is very effectively a hard brick only recoverable via jtag. or a new device.
the best way to update a rooted device is to update the rom with a recovery-flashable zip file, and the firmware extracted from the OTA package. this will update you just like taking the OTA. there is nothing magical about over the air updates. please, just do it manually. leave the OTAs for the stock crowd.
last and not least!
Q: im convinced! what do i do once i get back my stock,s-off phone?
A: please see post 2

Yes but if the devs found a way to share java card over internet mybe will be more ease. You Pay on the guy with the java gard and you use one time the java over internet from home. This will be really good solution if they found a way to do that
I can donate but waiting so many weeks... And probably HOX can be lost during so long way...

[FAQ][HELP THREAD][GUIDES LIST] Ask Any Question

Hello Everyone.
Good News for everyone. I have decided to maintain a help thread at HTC ONE M9 community in order to keep the threads for development/general section more clean and better organised. I have been noticing for a long time that whenever new users join, they still are not sure about the rules and thus mistakenly post in the wrong sections too often. If any senior member points it out to them, mostly it is either ignored or taken personally. Thus I have decided a combined help section would be very helpful to the community and the questions which are sometimes left unanswered and lost in question answer forums, that would not happen again for all of you.
I would be trying my best to personally answer all your questions and shall refer you to someone in case I feel someone else would be able to answer the same question in a more detailed way. Other users can feel free to answer as well if you think you can tackle the situation well and make sure while answering any question, you provide enough information to the users as well. You can easily link the users to posts if you think a question has been already answered.
REASONS I AM MAKING THIS
Lots of repetitive questions.
Same things told again and again
Threads remain clean
A simple reference to every important thread that you should visit in case you have a problem
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO
Read the rules here XDA RULES BEFORE YOU POST
Idea of this thread is to help and to be helped. So ask any question you have in mind related to S6, Android, or anything at all as long as it is related to your device directly or indirectly.
Make sure you are precise with your information
Be Detailed
Do not repeat the same thing again and again
Use search button to find if your question has been asked before. Do not repeat your question if it is answered before.
WHAT INFORMATION YOU MUST PROVIDE
1.Your bootloader status if applicable
2. Rom name with complete baseband/date/version
3. Kernel name
4. Any Mods you are using
5.If you are using Custom Rom, your flashing style i.e dirty/clean or you wiped anything else in specific
6. If you used any guide, link to the guide
7. Root status
8. Your exact problem
9. Any method you tried that failed
10.Any other detail you think would be necessary
Make sure you provide as much details as possible. Things like my phone won't turn on please help would not be of any help to you or to the person answering. So please make sure you provide as much detail so we know exactly what is your problem and thus guide you in the right direction.
A sample would be something like this
Device: HTC ONE M9
ROM name: CM 12 dated 10th May
ROM version and base: 3.99-RC2
Build number: CM_M9-userdebug 4.3 JLS36G
kernel version and its settings: 3.4.0-myspecial.kernel.plus [email protected] #193
Rooted
Sabertooth Mod
I can not use my WIFI. Although i tried flashing Wifi modules but it does not work.
I flashed CM over Stock firmware version X.X.X.X.Y.Z

Please remember "Give respect to others, others will respect you back!" in simple words, No abuse towards newbies/noobs will be tolerated here! So anyone found doing that would be reported.
Another important thing is MAKE SURE YOU THANK THE PERSON who helps you. This is to show your appreciation to someone who personally took his time to answer your question. He had been nice enough to do it for FREE and nothing else. A simple thank you to his post will go a long way. The questions would be answered more and the one who is answering would be happy to answer more questions. So it is a gain gain situation for all of you. Read my signature because most people take help for granted here. So be kind to others and HIT THANKS BUTTON A LOT.

Hey all, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes. I'm running the HTC M9 with VZW. This is my first Android, so I haven't rooted/unlocked/anything yet. I'm not even sure if I want to for the time being, since I don't currently have the time to troubleshoot any problems that might arise. Anyway, on to my question:
From what I have read, it seems VZW made HTC disable the FM radio, or at least didn't ship with the FM radio app. 3rd party apps like NextRadio don't work. I went and found an .apk for what I thought was the current version, but it doesn't work (as soon as I open it it crashes).
Is there either a stock APK, or a 3rd party app that will allow me to use the FM radio tuner, without rooting it? If not, what steps would I need to take to be able to use said app?
Again, my apologies for my ignorance in such matters. I'm fairly good with computers and even have some knowledge of troubleshooting Android devices, but I know absolutely zero about rooting/flashing/etc.
Many thanks all!

Hello mate. You have chosen the correct forum.
I was comparing verizon HTC One M9 with International M9.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/vzw/...iceProdId=dev4120028&priceToggle=24#techspecs
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_m9-6891.php.
If you see the specs, you'd find that Verizon has not listed radio at all. If it is verizon that is blocking the radio, it can be used through a mod/ root or using another app However, if it has not got a radio antenna inside, I'm afraid no amount of apps or mods would work.
Try this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mikersmicros.fm_unlock
I hope this is enough. If you still got question, quote me and I'd be happy to help you out.

Hello everyone!
I have a situation here ... I have quite massive battery drain from Google Play Services on my HTC One M9. I check with my gf Samsung Galaxy S6 and her G play services were about 1%. My were almost 50%... The only difference is I use LG G Watch R paired to my phone but I tried disconnecting it and still same... I use Google Fit and also tried disabling it but not much of a difference. There was about 10% less of drain when I put my location on battery save. But it is still over the ruff with that drain. My device is not rooted so I can't check battery wakes ... I kinda don't know what to do any more. Has any one had problem like this and how did you solve it?
I am thankful for any responses or ideas. (Sorry for bad English)

Go into Google play and uninstall updates. Do the same for google play services. Turn off google location services and keep location on low battery use (GPS only)
Read this guide as you'd be updating your apps manually. Make sure you note down version of google play services /google play. In case a new update comes, you can try and see if battery drain is fixed.
Quote me back with your results.

Actually it depends what you like to do with your phone. Do you root it as well or not.
I always like to root all my devices. Therefore, Titanium Backup is an app I can not live without.
SuperSu pro paid version is worth it for I like to support the developer who puts so much effort.
Mx Player Pro is also great for movies. BS Player is something I would recommend as well. I use both of them for videos
Next is Moon+Reader which is also great for reading books (PDF, EPUB, MOBI and lots of other files supported)
It is also wise to invest in OfficeSuite. It is also worth it.
CamScanner Pro is also worth it as you can scan documents from your phone!
I also like SD Maid Pro (root) to clear up cache / unused files.
Then , there are lots of games to play.
If you can tell me what kind of apps you are interested in, maybe I can shed some more light

Hey all, I got a few questions regarding installing a custom ROM
I just unlocked, flashed a custom recovery (TWRMP) and flash superuser.
1. Can't make a nandroid backup of the stock ROM, sais the backup size is 0 bytes, is this normal?
2. can't get into recovery the old fashion way (power + volume down), instead I use ADB. I fear when I try to flash and I get into bootloop for w/e reason, I can't get into recovery at all. How can I solve this?
3. is there a no sense ROM somewhere out there?
4. What is AROMA? is it a custom recovery?
thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. Find all the guides in this forum in second post and I suggest you look at the first few posts as well.
1. No, 0 bytes is not normal at all
2. Sometimes, the normal keys do not work because a proper exploit has not been found till date and thus, they are using a work around for that. Give it time, a developer will soon come up with a proper fix.
3. yes, all roms based on AOSP and CM would be without HTC sense. Check in the development section of this device to see if there has been development. As for now, there have not been any but I am sure many would come up pretty soon. As a general rule, all roms based on stock usually come with Sense, while all custom roms based on CM/AOSP or themselves are Sense Free.
4. AROMA is basically a smart way to flash any recovery/kernel/ rom. Usually in Aroma, small details can be chosen to your likings (In case of kernel, you can select, its governors, mods, processor and GPU clockspeed, etc). So Aroma gives more choice over normal flash.

Here is a guide for all errors regarding Playstore. See if any of these help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2733038
Are you using some kind of add blocker or apps which hack playstore ?
Have you tried downloading via data /another wifi.
I also suggest if you are rooted, go to device/etc and delete "hosts file" if clearing cache and data is not helping.
Sometimes removing your account and clearing data/cache and relogging in helps.

Hi!
I searched well but didn't found any information about this.
I want to unlock bootloader and S-OFF, but WITHOUT using HTCDev at all. I don't want that any info goes to them. Is there a method to do it at home without searching for people with "programmators" or "javacards"?
Do you know where the location of the screen off animation is please?
I don't mean the boot / shut down animation, i mean the animation which occurs when we lock the device, it used to be the CRT animation but it's been removed, what we have now is a fade animation, on the S6 this has been modified, i'd like to do the same with our M9's but i'm not sure of the location.
Cheers,

Well, actually unless a developer finds an exploit to S-OFF a device/ unlock bootloader without HTCDev, I do not think there is a way to do that. Currently I am not sure of any developer working on it and I am not much hopeful that someone would when it is already available officially.
In my experience, I have been using android for a long time now from 2009, unlocking a device does not make any difference . Every device I bought, I unlocked it using official tools provided by manufacturer and never regretted it.
Also, usually it is in terms that your warranty could be voided, however, usually first time you mess up your phone and take it for support, they warn you and reinstall the software for you. And mostly they do not give much damn about it. (That's how it happens in the UK)

Actually I am not sure where it is exactly either. However, it could be that they have integrated in SystemUI or made an apk for individual effect.
If you are rooted, install any app by which you can see system apps, and look for any app that shows animation/effect/fade etc.
See if that helps, however , if it does not, I will research for you and get back but make sure you quote me ! Or you can use xposed to manually find/change the effect.

Cheers mate, i've actually went and installed an xposed module which enables this, i was trying to avoid that as I think xposed is a little heavy and is still an alpha build.
Will keep looking as i'd like to mod this myself without xposed.
PS: Haven't got any thanks left but will get you tomorrow cheers.

Don't mention it mate. No trouble.
Glad I could be of help.
Ive see ROMs showing they need or require me to be on a certain firmware before using that ROM. How do I update the firmware? I thought that came with the ROM, as part of it. Some are requiring firmware I don't even see posted yet. If i were to install a firmware, will that change or wipe the current ROM? Also some require me to be s-off. I think, if read right, I need the $25 app to s-off? Correct? What is the reason to s-off? I've been running ROMs that don't require it, seem to work fine.

honestly I am not sure of the $25 price for an app which is claiming to S off device.
If it is sunshine S off, I approve, else it could be a scam or the real thing.
I succesffully download the sunshine app for free but i didnot run it on my android so I am not sure!
There are few links you must see, how to unlock S for your device.

As far as upgrading your STOCK ROM is concerned, Look at this guide. There are also some unofficial ways
http://www.htc.com/uk/support/htc-one-m9/howto/602178.html
S off is basically a lock on your device which prevents flashing custom Roms and modification to your device via scripts.

The Sunshine app is developed by a several XDA recognized developers. Read about it in the official thread. At the website they set up, they offer some information about themselves as well as some answers to frequently asked questions.
I haven't been around this device to speak knowledgeably about it's related hacks, but this seems legitimate.

Newcomer Questions

Hello, so I'm going to be receiving my HTC One M9 tommorrow morning, and I was hoping the XDA community could help me with some fundemental questions regarding my new phone.
So, first off, this is a Verizon version, but I'm 95% certain that it comes factory unlocked. HTC6535LVWSG. I hear some people have issues rooting/S-OFFing the Verizon version (VZW at least, but I don't think mine is), but if it's not that version (or already unlocked, for that matter), does that mean that I will be able to load up any recovery from here? Assuming that I've gotten a recovery installed (my past phone was an EVO 3D, which I've tinkered quite a bit with), will I be able to use ROMs posted here? Or will I need to use specially made Verizon ROMs?
All of that aside, do you know where I can find the Marshmellow RUU that I heard just came out for the M9? As mentioned in the earlier paragraph, will I need a special GSM version for it?
EDIT: I found the news post at HTC, I'm assuming that it would work for any M9.
Thanks for anyone who responds!

NO! SLOW DOWN!
If you get a Verizon M9 do not flash anything!! Unless its specifically for the Verizon M9 or the developer of the ROM/Kernel states it will work with CDMA or Verizon M9's.
As of right now only the GSM Marshmallow update is out. Do not flash this RUU/update on a Verizon M9. It's better if you start off by just looking around for Verizon M9 threads. Ask questions in other threads if that particular ROM or file will work on a Verizon M9 or better yet read through most if not all the posts in those threads because more often than not someone in your shoes has already asked the same question.
But if you received a locked/S-ON device do not update/change anything on that phone until you've freshen up on whether or not S-OFF/Rooting is available for the software that comes already on it. It'll save you the headache of playing around with a new phone and it auto updates now your stuck without S-OFF.
Also don't ask questions in "General" that's what the Q&A section is for.
Congratulations! I think you'll be pleased with the M9.
Diaclaimer: I'm a hobbyist and not an expert - you should do some reading of threads and
research before attempting to hack your phone.
A few things:
- you may find better help in the Verizon HTC M9 forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-one-m9)
- S-OFF is currently only possible on Verizon's variant of the M9 via a Java Clip. They're expensive, but there are fellow XDA members who own them and are willing to use theirs on your phone, usually for a reasonable fee
- until your bootloader is unlocked (pretty sure that your phone will NOT come that way - Verizon is not user-friendly) or you are S-OFF, you will not be able to flash a custom anything (recovery or ROM). Attempting to do so may render your phone unusable.
- Marshmallow has been released officially for the developer/unlocked variant of the M9, which is GSM-only. The Verizon variant is CDMA; the RUU will fail to install on your device.
Hope this is helpful. You probably have a bit more effort to go through to be able to hack your phone, but it's very doable and worth the effort. The M9 is a solid device and all the moreso once you have S-OFF (or an unlocked bootloader) and root.
Unfortunately, UPS Next Day Air has failed me, with yet another delay, so I won't have the phone today. :v
I know it's already paid off, and I'm pretty sure it's factory unlocked. What determines if it's a VWZ version or not? How does this affect my modding processes? I hear of several people who can do stuff to "non-VWZ" versions.
dottat said:
Not for the vzw m9. Big difference is the versions they can do already can use htc dev to bootloader unlock and root. Vzw is another can of worms because we need a root exploit before anything can happen.

So, I got the phone today. It was supposed to be delayed but I guess they managed to deliver it! I have to go, so the phone is gonna sit here for a couple hours, but it can boot into the bootloader (I'm not sure if this is a sign that it can be unlocked, but we'll see, I guess.)

Any phone can boot into the bootloader. To determine your phone's status, you'll need to look at the upper left corner when you are in bootloader mode: does it say 'unlocked' or 'locked'? Similarly, does it say 'S-ON' or 'S-OFF'?
First of all you should, in my opinion, deal with the differences of a CDSM to a GSM device in detail and read especially the Verizon specific threads in this forum very carefull.
Seconed to it you should pick up the full information about block based OTA politics, and the major changes regarding moddifications to Android 5.1.1. If never done before you should also read the basic threads abaut unlocking, rooting, fastboot as well as adb commands. If need for further help occurs it is hightly important to be able to explain when, where and assumingly why a problem/error occured.
Besides this have fun with your One M9!

Ah, I know the ins and outs of adb and fastboot already, as I've had my fair share of working with the HTC bootloader-- however I just wanted to clarify some things that I had not previously known. Thanks for the advise, though.
Guys please, anyone can verify that the buttons (power and volume) are a bit 'down after a few months of use??
