Restore Service Mode? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I used to be able to access Service Mode via *#197328640# but I haven't used it in like a year. I tried to fiddle with it today and the code no longer works. I'm guessing I never used it since I updated from 4.1.x to 4.3. Still running a stock ROM.
Is there an easy way to bring it back without rooting or flashing (unless there's a simple one click root out there)? I read a bunch of threads for other devices and tried a few things but nothing worked.
I read somewhere I needed a hidden menu apk which I did not have so I downloaded one and installed it but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it do anything.
And yes, I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to messing with Android devices.
Thanks.

[Q] Stuck somewhere between root and unroot..

Hi all.
I'll start by saying I have gotten in way over my head. I rooted my Evo with unrEVOked's one-click method, and then began to experience some problems with my 3g. Thinking I had somehow botched the rooting process, I tried to unroot using the two-step method I also found on xda (cannot post link.. further proof I am a noob ). More problems sprang up, one thing led to another, various fixes were tried (HUGE thanks to everyone in the IRC channel last night that tried to help my sorry ass..) but to no avail.
Here is where my phone is at now: booting using vol down+power shows me S-ON. Trying to flash mtd-eng.zip results in an error, so I am seemingly stuck with S-ON. Normally I would be happy about this (that's one step closer to unrooted, right?) but I notice I still have Superuser in my apps. My 3g is working again for whatever reason (no complaints here! maybe it was a Sprint-side problem in my area.. what timing!) but I'm confused as to whether my phone is rooted or not.
Ideally, I would like to go back to unrooted, since I have made it abundantly clear to myself that I am not yet prepared to embark in rooting. If anyone could guide me in the right direction, I would be very thankful.
You no longer have root access. Nothing you do at this point will allow you to run a .img on your own.
Your best bet would be to try and run one of the RUU programs to get it all back to stock.
I don't know if the Superuser application will be removed by this but you can try it:
Go to Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory Data Reset
Your phone should reboot and may have erased the Superuser app.

I did this, and my phone is now in RA-evo-v1.8.0 (it rebooted into recovery). Should I reboot the system now? I find it strange that it took me here in the first place.
The current PC36IMG that is flashed to the Evo is one with Amon Ra built into it.
The only RUU program that I am allowed to run (from the list that was given out in one of the unrooting evo threads) gives me the 170 error before anything happens.
You don't have root access, but your phone still has a custom recovery (Amon_RA) right now. No way to get rid of the custom recovery now except through an official update that replaces the recovery file.
Like I said you can try to run one of the RUU Official updates found in the Developer forum.
Don't know your location, but if you post it, someone close to you might try to help you out in person.

With a little digging and poking and reading, I found the proper RUU, ran it, and I believe I am now back to fully unrooted. Thank you very much for your help!

[Q] HTC Thunderbolt 605.10

Hello everyone, first off, I read these two posts in their entirety:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009969
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=943
I apologize if this might not be the best forum to post in, but as I just signed up I didn't have enough posts to post in the first thread like other people.
So I kinda have a good understanding of what I need to do with my phone, but need someone to recommend the best thing for me to do to change my firmware to 6.05.6 or 6.05.9, so allow me to share my rooting experience:
First off, I am running Windows 7 64-bit and I have never rooted a phone before and my Thunderbolt was my first droid device that I got 5 days ago on April 2nd, but I have plenty experience with flashing firmware for other devices such as routers, DVD drives etc. Initially I was not going to bother rooting my phone because of how complicated it looked, but then I found the one-click method and was becoming increasingly annoyed by not being able to get rid of the bloatware such as the Blockbuster app, Bitbop, Lets Golf 2, Rockband, Peep, and a couple others, so I decided to give the one-click method a shot.
Initially I had an issue with the ADB driver as Windows failed to install it successfully, after many agonizing minutes and a couple forums later, I installed HTC Sync and that fixed the issue, so now my batch file was working thus far. My second problem was the hbooteng.nb0 file. I had extracted the files from the exploits.zip correctly to the platform-tools folder, but my mistake was that instead of using the RUU filed and renaming it for the first flash, I initially flashed it with the one that was already name PG05IMG, so basically I thought I had done it correctly until I ran into the hbooteng.nb0 issue and realized I had flashed with the wrong file, leaving my phone basically unchanged and unrooted, but working perfectly fine.
Sooo I started over, this time knowing for sure I was using the correct files, and the process went pretty smoothly and the oneclick method told me my phone was rooted and to install the SU and ROM Manager so I did. Also did the clockworkmod thing as well.
But here is where my current problem is: My firmware is the 605.10 version and I would like it to either be back at the stock 605.6 or the newer 605.9. My phone works modestly well with the 605.10 so far EXCEPT it isn't correctly detecting my location. I live in Indiana, but the clock keeps setting itself to Rio de Janeiro. Also if I try to use Google Earth and do "find my location" with the GPS enabled, it takes me to Rio de Janeiro!
So here is my question: Which method of getting to the 605.6 or 605.9 firmware is the safest for me to use? And will using the one-click batch file to flash to either of those firmwares be safe since in the beginning it says that method does not work unless it is already at 605.6 or 605.9? Or should I attempt to do the option of factory resetting my phone through the SDcard settings, and what will I lose, and will I be back at 605.6, OR am I somehow supposed to use the ROM Manager app to flash to 605.6 or 605.9?
Many thanks in advance!
Ok so I ended up using ROM Manager and flashed to the 1.12.605.06 and it worked successfully but now my phone is no longer rooted since the ShootMe app doesn't work.

[Q] SPH-L710

These new SPH-L710 are very robust. I recently brought a new SG3 from Boost, now its time to root (piece of cake right). A little background first, I have; Samsung Ultra Transform, Samsung Galaxy Player, HTC Evo3D, Kindle Fire HD, all rooted. I tried 3 different methods to root this SPH-L710, after the first method soft bricked my phone, I figured I did something wrong, re-flashed stock rom and tried a different method. Didn't work. CF-Auto-Root ("I'm pretty sure this is gonna work"), tried it, didn't work. I pulled the battery, tried manually from different recoveries, no mount access to san disk. Every method I tried did not install super user, so i downloaded it from play store, several times, using different version and uninstall them when they didn't work before trying a different one. I use esfile explorer to check for root access, still no root. Looked thru the www, and saw several people are also having this issue, I thought it was just me. Is there any workaround or solution out there that I missed or updated method for this model SPH-L710, it seems like this is the only model with this issue. These new phones are great but without root I'm lost, somebody please point me in the right direction.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34579827
Have a great day!
Thanks for the help, this is the only method that has worked for me. Just in case anyone else comes across this post, I am on boostmobile even though the root instructions says its for sprint only, it has work for me I am now fully rooted! I also followed the instructions to the letter, even reinstalling the drivers I already had, my SPH-L710 works great with root.
Last thing, the easiest way (fool proof) to get into recovery mode is hold VOLUP+Home+Power buttons, the phone will vibrate then show samsung, at that moment ONLY release the power button. your phone will continue to boot to recovery, once in recovery then you can let go of the other buttons.

[Q] No OS installed. Boots to TWRP. How can I restore?

Ideally back to CM11 but to stock would be fine also.
I made a bit of a mess of installing Firefox OS using multirom and now after playing with the recovery I've restored to factory settings hoping that would bring the stock rom back but it didn't. Now I'm left with a tablet with no functioning OS. I've done a bit of Googling but couldn't really find a straight forward guide, if someone could recommend one it'd be great. I looked in the FAQ here and found this thread but don't completely understand it, this is my first Android device so I'm not down with a lot of the terminology and such.
I've got access to a Mac primarily so if any software is required and there's Mac alternatives please suggest them but I can get access to a windows computer if it's required.
Thanks

All you need to do is reflash your ROM, be it CM11 or stock or whatever you want. Download it, put it on your tablet, and flash it from TWRP.

On VS98510B, just want to upgrade to latest android, please help.

I have a VS985 LG G3. I was running marshmallow yesterday, but after trying to root and unlock mobile tethering and hotspot (because I am on unlimited data) I managed to brick my phone while typing in adb commands because my phone decided to randomly shut off. So after plugging it into the USB and figuring out a way to put it into download mode, I flashed it to VS98510B. After that, I rooted with Stump Root and installed SuperSU, following some guides. It works fine once again but I'm not where I want to be.
After multiple times trying to open adb shell and get it to just recognize my device, I'm done. I know there are people out there who know this stuff by heart, so please, at this point, just tell me what to do step by step so I can do it and move on with my life. I have spent hours upon hours on this and it never seems to just work. Please.
All I want is to be able to install the latest TWRP or whatever is recommended., and then install either the SkyDragon Rom or the stock marshmallow VS98546A rom, but with the verizon apps disabled since in one guide it warns that those report for modified device, which I am not sure what that means but it doesn't sound good.
I'm on VS98510B. Rooted and SuperSU installed.
I want to be able to use mobile hotspot and tethering.
There's just information overload to the extreme, I'm overwhelmed.
Thanks again if any help is possible.
If you're already rooted with TWRP installed, the hard part should really be over. You shouldn't need to be plugging into a computer and running adb commands at this point. You also said you need step by step instructions, and to really spell it all out would be a lot, but considering how far you already got I don't think you really need every little detail, so I'll give you the general idea then if you have questions I can try to fill those gaps.
Basically you'll need to find and download the new ROM you want. The easiest thing to do is download it directly from your phone so you don't have to mess around with transferring it from your computer to your phone. Many custom ROMs will also require Gapps, but if you're flashing a stock ROM (or a custom ROM based on stock) you don't need to do this because it's included in the ROM.
After you've downloaded the ROM (should just be a zip file), you need to reboot to recovery (TWRP). If you don't know how to do this, there's an app called Quick Reboot that can do it for you (01400) personally haven't used it but I assume it works).
Once you're in recovery, you normally want to make a backup first in case anything goes wrong. This is done by selecting the backup button. After you have a backup, you want to "wipe" data before installing. Select the wipe button, then I click advanced and select everything except internal data and external data. This will wipe all apps, settings, etc. from your phone so make sure you're ok with that before you do it,
After wiping, you're ready to install. Back at the first main screen of TWRP, select Install, then browse to where you downloaded the ROM and select it, then select the Install button and swipe to confirm. Assuming all goes well, when it's finished it'll give you the option to reboot. Do this and it should start booting up to your new ROM.
Also, you mentioned SkyDragon, but I just wanted to point out that this isn't the latest version of Android, I believe that's still Lollipop (not Marshmallow). You also mentioned not wanting your rooted status to be reported to Verizon, but if you're currently on stock, rooted, and don't have any apps disabled, then you already are running this risk.
Let me know if you have any questions. I think this will be easier than me trying to walk you through every detail and confirmation screen.
I don't have TWRP installed. What is the best course of action to take to install it?
As far as disabling verizon apps, is it as simple as just going into the application manager and disabling them or is there a tool I need to download?
Thanks for all the help so far!
I see, it's been a couple years since I installed TWRP and I was thinking it was part of the rooting process. I believe this is the post I followed to install TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-...mp-unlock-lg-g3-twrp-d852-d852g-f400-t2900614
Like I said, this was a few years ago and it's kind of a one-time thing. I don't know if there's something better available now or what, and I don't remember the details. I don't remember running into any problems, so if you happened to have any I'm not sure how good I could help.
As for disabling things, the things that need to be disabled are system apps and can't just be disabled from the stock application manager (Verizon doesn't want to make it easy for you to disable their software ). There are different ways this can be done, but I personally use Titanium Backup to disable (or "freeze" as they call it) apps. It will let you freeze anything, which also means it gives you the ability to break things, so don't just go in freezing random things. I don't remember if freezing requires the paid version of the app or not, but you can get it from the play store and find out.

As far as Titanium Backup goes, is it along the same lines as TWRP? Like do they do the same things? Do you recommend I do one over the other?
Also as far as verizon apps reporting root, what do they do and what does that matter?
Also, I'm currently dealing with the LG DemiGod Crash Handler problem that seems to have started up on my phone the other day. I'd never rooted or messed with my phone in any way and that started happening, I thought perhaps flashing a new ROM might fix it, but I guess not. If you have any sort of tips on how to fix that, other than replace the battery (which I have not yet done, but supposedly that can solve the problem) I'd be grateful.
Titanium Backup and TWRP are two different things. Titanium Backup is a "normal" app that you can get from the Play store, while TWRP is a custom recovery and isn't ran from within your ROM. TWRP lets you do full image backups of your phone (like your entire phone in a single backup) and can also be used to install ("flash") ROMs. Titanium Backup lets you backup, freeze, and uninstall specific apps.
I use them both because they both serve a specific purpose. You have to use TWRP to install ROMs, then as far as backups, I use TWRP to make a backup of everything in case I flash a ROM that I end up not liking (I can use the backup to easily go back to my previous ROM and still have apps and everything all setup just like they were). If I do like the new ROM I flashed, I'll use Titanium Backup to restore a lot of my apps/data to the new ROM (ex. text messages, my alarm clock app, etc.)
As far as Verizon knowing about your root status, honestly I'm not sure what all that would mean. I'm sure they wouldn't like it, rooting voids your warranty so you probably couldn't get things replaced under warranty, if you have insurance through Verizon they would maybe use your root status as a reason to deny a claim, etc. I don't think you'd have to worry about them calling you up or cancelling your service or anything like that, but getting them to assist you with problems might be more frustrating than usual
Regarding the demigod crash thing, I know what you're talking about but I don't really know much about it. A while ago I would get those every once in a while and it was frustrating. I think at the time I kind off wanted to try a new ROM anyways and I think I did but I still got it occasionally. Now that you mentioned it though I haven't had one in quite a while. I'm not sure if those ROMs both happened to cause it, if it was a Lollipop thing (doesn't seem like I've had it since Marshmallow), or if it's all just a coincidence or I've just been lucky. I haven't gotten a new battery though, so that's definitely not it (for me anyways).
