Hello all I am new to this site and have some major problems with my nexus. it started with my nexus dying and would not charge with the charger that came with it so I was using a blackberry charger to charge it which seemed to remedy the issue for some time until about a week ago my phone was almost dead so I plugged in the charger and nothing. turned it off plugged in the charger and it seemed to work that way but still would not charge when turned on and plugged in. so after some research on google I found that crud and fluff from my pocket was making the charger not have a good connection. so I cleaned out the carpet of fluff in the usb port and still nothing, Upon closer examination I found the "tongue" of the usb port was split in half so I ordered a new dock on amazon and replaced it. Before the dock came in the screen would act like it was locked but as soon as I hit the back button it would unlock automatically it will also charge when there isn't a charger anywhere near it. So now I have replaced the charging dock with an oem new one and it will charge but only when turned off. It still ghost charges and the screen still goes wacko but I still cannot get it to charge when on. it doesn't even recognize the charger and also my computer does not recognize that it is plugged in either. I have searched this sight and have not found anyone having quite the same issue as me?
Sorry for the long winded thread but I have spent many a hour on google to no avail can someone please shed some light on this for me
thank you richygnex. p.s. the screen will unlock itself when it feels like it but looks like its locked until you hit the back button.
hoping the xda crew will help me with a solution :good:
Sounds like some weird stuff...similar to what I had.
I'd start with flashing factory image, replacing USB daughter card and/or battery.
I did all that and it worked for a while...and then PC Won't recognize.
Does your PC recognize the nexus?
solved!!!!!!
PC did not recognize phone however my problems were solved by a replacement USB ribbon port and recalibrate the battery
Wasnt there an issue w/ the connector where the pins needed to be lifted?

Yes unfortunately that was not the issue for me even after replacing the usb ribbon port. It would not work properly until I did a battery recalibration then all was well and good my laptop even recognizes the phone. The "phantom charging" issue has gone away and all other strange glitch problems have disappeared. 3 days without a single problem. I believe the battery needing to be recalibrated was due to the fact I had to strip a usb cable and jump my battery like a car positive and negative were crossed unknowingly a few times while it was charging and got fairly hot so I believe that was one of the biggest if not the main factor that played a role in all the problems I was experiencing.

this method is actually the reason I ended up taking the phone apart and replacing the ribbon port myself. tried lifting the pins and it just cracked in half. not sure if it was already broken or if I did it but it was screwed

I've noticed after a couple of weeks of use (= quite a lot of charging) that he usb connector as become quite loose. I have to position the cable carefully and then not move the device while charging or the orange charge light goes out and it stops.
I can see this being more of a prob in a car mount than on my desk but it's a pain. Wondering whether this will come under the warranty.
Ofcourse it will. Unless they can prove its user error and/or bad handling. This depends on law per country or in eu.

Charging stripes: And removing the charging stripes, well. I don't see any problem there. I know other people who have the micro usb connecter for a long time and are using a cradle, car charger and other stuff a lot (not desire, different device). But no problems at all with the micro-usb connector. Never had any problems with the mini-usb connector as well. Don't see why it would suddenly be a problem now.
It feels quite solid, think it works great on my desktop cradle as well.

oh really? You don't see a problem here? LOL
Mines wobbled since the start, luckily it hasn't come loose whilst charging, hopefully it won't or its going straight back.
Exact same observation here and it's only become an issue in the past 3 days for me after more than 2 months in use. If I don't keep it still and without even the slightest forces pushing/pulling either side, the USB connection drops.

Yeah - it was fine and now it's wobbly and fussy. Experience suggests that this is the start of a slow decline that ends up with selotape.

Having a cradle and carkit with connector myself, and using it for quite some time: no, I don't see a problem.
I never had any problems with charging connectors, ever.
But you get my credits for remembering this, kudos.
As I am currently importing micro usb adapters, cradle and cables I do see quite some differences.
Micro usb connectors from some suppliers are more loose than others. The original is still rock solid here, even after some weeks of use.
The same with different cradles I've tried. Some fit perfectly while others hold the phone in place only with the micro usb. So the weight is all on the connector which means its a bad cradle.
Sure, charging stripes can solve the problem of a bad cradle, but so does a decently made cradle which is actually made for the Desire and supports it properly.

It is a known issue, your phone charging contacts are dirty, or not properly seated. So,try to clean them and fix their position by slightly moving contacts toward display.
I guess you have tried another charger to be sure, that problem is related to phone contacts only.
You can find detailed informations about cleaning phone contacts within xda by using search button of course.

yeah i had exact problem about a month ago, if you have a can of duster for electronics, simply point it about 2 inches away from the slot and give it a few quick burst, dont get too close cuz the liquid could ruin your device.

i cant fina anything about cleaning phone contacts would you be helpful and give me any kind of link?
There's a lot to be said for clearing accumulated pocket fluff - whether with a can of compressed air, or a bent paper clip.
However, the Nexus is definitely temperamental when it comes to being friends with 'universal' charger cables.
Like most people, I've got any number of wall plug chargers dotted around the house - along with a ones I use to charge from the PC - and some seem to work, others don't.
The charger in the car is the most inconsistent. Sometimes it charges fine (albeit without enough power to maintain sat-nav use for any long journeys) whilst at other times it flicks back and forth between charging and not. Recently, it's become pretty much unusable for the Nexus.
I don't think the issue is with the charger itself - it happily chargers my work phone and my bluetooth headset without worry.
I know that there are variations between micro-USB chargers even though they look the same, and fit the connector OK - and know that people more gifted than me are able to open them up, and do voodoo with the wires to make them work/boost their power output.
Can anyone point me towards a (basic) explanation of these issues?

Just leave the phone connected to the PC for a few hours. That usually reset the charging problem with my phones (Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4).

Be careful with the USB connector on the phone. It is best not to try and put any kind of tool into the socket. It is very delicate and fussy, and too easily damaged, and very difficult to replace. It is one of the weakest and touchiest component on the phone. Don't even ug the charger into it ad wiggle it around. It breaks easily. I know first hand unfortunately.

hello is there someone to help me in this case??
First thing, sorry if this has been answered before. The thread search never works from my phones. It just disappears as soon as my keyboard appears.
Is there a way to fix the USB /charging port to keep it from being so touchy? I've tried new factory data /charge cable. I've tried expensive brand name cables. They all seem to work for a more th or two pretty well and then its back to charge/not charge sometimes without even touching the phone.
This has been the way with every Samsung phone I've owned and it is so aggravating because, as I'm trying to type or while playing a game it interrupts and causes lags and also the battery will die while I think its charging if I can't see a battery icon.
Other than sending both my phones in for new USB jacks/ports, is there something I can do? I'm pretty capable at fixing electronics if not too technical.
seem to be having bad luck with your ports i would suggest a new charger but im sure you've done that a plentiful of times or you just have really bad luck with phones thats stuff get an iphone JK!!! lol you stick to samsung chargers not no after market stuff right ? and does the cable feel securely tighten or loose when you plug it ? is this phone old new you could have a dirty port spray some air can in that port to clear debris
Hey, thanks for your reply.
I think this problem stems from me being on the phones a lot and I have the the charging /data cable in a lot to keep the battery up. With that, the constant mmovement of up and down from table /desk top, to ear,or car seat /center console to my pocket as im in and out of my car.
The cable always feels loose in the jack. Im sure the jack is stretched open. The chip that is inside, may be has worn and the edges of the board slightly filed down making a loose connection .
Anyways, Ive already had to start charging the battery directly. I've also got a replacement ordered. That's why I pay for insurance right?
So we can put this thread to bed. Thanks
I have the same problem... I'm on my 3rd Galaxy s2...... Phone can be on charger at 15% let it charge for a few hours and when I go back to check on it, it says 10% battery.. I've bought several chargers and batteries... TMobile just keeps sending me the same phone out.. I just got another one on the 13th... What could be the cause of this... Also the phone shuts off while charging... So many dropped calls.. I give up on this phone... What can I do..

Same problem here. The best luck is (oddly) using a computer (instead of a wall charger) and charging while the phone is off. And, the original Samsung charger block and USB are the least reliable of all I have tried. The microUSB end of the cable is slightly undersized. Note: removing the battery completely (while not connected by cable) for 10sec seems to improve the charging.
It has been a good phone but 3 years might be all it can handle. Xperia Z3 compact, here I come.
Before everyone starts accusing me of not running a simple search, take it easy, been done. And yet, nothing to help me on the matter.
So here's the thing:
Her phone won't charge. Not when plugged into the wall, BUT when I plug her phone into the computer it is recognized and allows file transfer and everything, but just that - it still won't charge.
Here's what I've found out so far:
- Not a problem with the charger: I'm using the original charger, and it works flawlessly on my own Gnex running PA 4.4
- Nothing wrong with the battery: swap batteries between phones, my phone works fine with her battery, her phone still won't charge.
- When her phone is completely OFF and I plug it in to my PC, it plays the sound of connecting and disconnecting a device, and prompts that it doesn't recognize the USB device. If I tap the power button for a second while it's off (not holding it long enough for it to turn on), it does the same thing connecting-then-disconnecting sounds and "doesn't recognize the USB device".
So - has anyone ever run into this problem before? Know how to fix it? I know the chances are it's just a hardware malfunction, but it's weird because of the ability to transfer files- usually the problem is the reverse.
In the meantime we're using my phone as a charger for both batteries untill we get the spares and wall charger we ordered, but it's a real pain.
Just trying to find a better solution than taking apart the phone and try and fix it or just ordering a new Nexus 5 (which is tempting, but don't really have the money to spend on it...)

Its the micro USB port the pins are bent homie.
Some pins allow charging some allow data transfer. The ones for charging are damaged in your case.

Yup. Just this moment after a really really really close examination of the port and comparing it to my own phone, one tiny half a millimeter peice of metal is bent out of place and broken. Gotta order a new port ASAP and try and change it.
Thanks mate!
But hey, look at the bright side... a fun home project to immerse myself in instead of prepare for my finals!

Back with worse news. Just replaced my wife's micro USB port on her i9250 GNex, and.... same thing. Still won't charge, computer recognizes it. Now I'm completely baffled. Thought for a moment that maybe I had been such a fool as to have put back in the old port, but unfortunately, it wasn't my stupidity.
Ideas, anyone?
So I have recently noticed that my phone would often not fast charge when connected to the outlet. The lock screen just displays charging. From yesterday I've had another problem where the lock screen does say charging rapidly but the phone fails to charge at all. Sits at a constant percentage. Does anyone know why this may be happening and any solutions? I'm using the charger and cable provided with the phone.

I don't think it's broken as it was not charging fine when I posted this but after trying again repeatedly it started charging. Anyway if I do get a cable is there a good cable which works with this phone? I am scared of getting one because of all the issues that have been plaguing USB c cables.

I see you do not understand what "USB cable broken" means.. after the metal wire inside got broken - it still works in multiple cable positions (bends)..
Anyway, these are the cables - get a few of them (of different length for instance)

P.S. As there are plenty of old-fashioned crap around us (i.e. carrying those pesky microUSB sockets) - get this tiny but very useful converter to use along with your new cables:
