Startup speed - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using All-In-One Toolbox to control what boots at startup but it still times it at 1:58. The only thing I can think of is that HTC Service Pack. However, that's just a wild guess. I'm using Nova Launcher and on Verizon. I have pretty much the same setup on a Note 3 with T-Mobile and that startup time is just under 1 minute. Any ideas? I'd hate to have to start disabling everything or worse, reset the phone since I don't know what's slowing it down.
Thank you

1:58 is very long for this Phone. Did you made any changes to the system? Do you use Stock?

No, I'm using stock software.

Well, are you on 4.4.3 firmware ? I'm on 4.4.3 . I noticed a bit longer restart times. Whats your restart time ? Measure it with a stopwatch.

I'm on 4.4.2. I'm using all in one Toolbox which puts up a notification showing the total startup time. My Note 3 is showing a startup time of half my M8.

Well, I calculated my restart time. It took (34+- 1) seconds, to restart. What's yours ?

Galaxy Note 2 lagging after a few days of use??

I got my phone last monday and today my phone was lagging while swipping through home screens, app drawer and even in settings. It was like project butter was shutdown and I was back to the epic 4g. Thought kind strange giving the specs on this phone.. I have stock jb and no root.
After a restart everything went back to normal.
Just curious, does this happen to everyone here? Is this normal to happen after 2-3 days of use?

You must not be actually closing apps just hitting home I assume but if not then idk the problem
Sent from my SPH-L900
Yes I did close them... I even tried force closing all. Not sure why the phone was struggling a little.
you didn't enable power saving mode by any chance?
also, android should be fairly good at managing your memory. i believe google doesn't really recommend task killers because whenever you kill tasks that the OS needs, it'll just reload it, which itself consumes resources (maybe more resource than letting the process simply idle). so just leave those processes alone.
Are you running SetCPU? Make sure it didn't accidentally severely under clock you. That happened to me once and SETCPU was running me at 200 mhz for some reason.

I would double check on all the apps you've previously installed. I'm still on stock JB unrooted as well since released day (Oct 25), not once I've experience any lag that yours producing. Heck I've loaded a bunch of games and apps now my main storage is down to a gig, even then I haven't noticed any slow down. This phone is a beast thats all I can say.

Yeah, thats unfortunate because if anything the phone should speed up after a few days of use. Why don't you just keep it to the 1 thread you started in the GT 7100 forum? You already got 4 pages of responses there. And post a video of what you're talking about because the phone should not lag at all with power savings off.

I didn't strat a thread there... just replied to one and it was a different are of problem anyway..
Guys.. I didn't install any task killer, I just force off using that long pressing home button and going into running apps, the phone, no power saving mode on, still unrooted and very few apps. I use Android for 3 years and I looked all the places to make sure settings would not be causing this and it was not.
Really weird problem... it's fine now I just hope it keeps running this way by tomorrow.. I'll let you all know, if anything I'll make a video if I can reproduce.

Don't close the apps down just back out of them because you'll lag more when your phone sits there trying to open them all up again and cache them. But I agree its a strange problem, if this occurs againit might be something very specific.

That's strange. Yeah I would pay close attention to the problem and if it do come back, then maybe you probably have a bad note II. You never know, not everything are created equal. In that case I would take it in for a repair person to check it out.
Is there a way to know if all cores are running on stock Android?
I've also seen some sick battery life in this phone, but not on mine. Yesterday I got 12 hours with about 3 1/2 of screen, with few and short phone calls. What I used the most on this phone was the internet and the browser..
Not sure if these are related.
EDIT.... I installed CPU usage Monitoring and the 4th core stays off most of the time.. when I opened videos and messed with more apps it started working so I'm answering myself on that. Also, I played a video with the pop up function and the cpu only gets to about 30% and not even on all cores... wow.. the processing power here is really impressive.

Users have reported that sometimes when they use a advance task manager/killer the lock screen freezes...
Some reports also mention some apps that cause that bug...
And when you reboot it behave well for sometime, maybe it is due to an app you've installed that isn't open yet.
Did you put widgets on the lockscreen?

Random reboots

I am getting random reboots on my HTC m8 for Verizon, and I'm not quite sure why. The last one happened while I was browsing in Chrome, and a previous one happened when I was doing some other random task like browsing twitter. I am rooted via WeakSauce with s-on using exposed modules through soft reboots (not sure of this has anything to do with it) . Another thing, when I reboot, it sticks at the Verizon splash screen and I have to manual reboot via vol up and power button.
Also, my phone is getting pretty hot sometimes and I'm not sure why, any tips or possible explanations?

Well I'm inclined to think it's one of the Xposed modules causing your issue. Best way to check is with a Logcat if you can recreate the issue.
I doubt I could recreate the issue because it happens super randomly... I guess if it gets too bad, I'll just quit using my xposed and see if that fixes it

I have the same problem and so does 2 of my colleagues who are completely stock (not even unlocked/rooted). For me it usually happens while not doing anything with the phone though. It can just be sitting on my desk and suddenly reboot. It's insanely annoying and I can't seem to find any good information on the subject.
Well I also just started having some random reboot for whatever reason... Phone was also just on desk and rebooted itself for whatever reason. Funny enough though, my battery life was 96% when I last checked the phone could have drained a little bit more, but after the reboot it shows my battery as being 100% fully charged =o/

Yeah it's semi-stock perhaps. I did put on TWRP again, it's rooted, unlocked bootloader(of course, else no root right?). It was fine the whole time until I installed the xposed framework and some modules, even then I've had it on for about a week and nothing happened until this morning. I took the framework off and of course also the modules, will see if it happens again in the next week or so... :fingers-crossed: that it doesn't.

Hi guys,
So I was having the same problem with random reboots. I got frustrated and thought to just root and change to a GPE ROM. In the process of doing that I rooted and installed SetCPU. I discovered that the clock speed was 2265 and the minimum spped was set to 1958 by default. I felt like this was weird because that means the processor is running near full speed at all times (thus why the phone would get warm). To test I set the phone at max 2265 and min 2265. Almost immediately after reboot the phone started to get very warm. So, I changed the min to 1574 and then rebooted. It has been two weeks with:
no reboots
slightly better battery life than before
phone does not get warm
I have the T-Mobile HTC One M8. I wonder if the constant high speed was intentional. I had to exchange my phone twice before trying this. I even tried using the phone before installing third party apps and it would still reboot. I am rooted with s-on and stock recovery and now I don't feel the need to install another ROM.
Hope this helps for some of you!!
good looking out there. However I most likely won't be changing my ROM due to it working fairly nicely with my JVC KW-NSX700 car stereo. Mirrorlink seems to be functional with a quirk here or there.
Oh, I'm still running the stock sense rom

Well, this is good news. I'm going to be getting rid of my Nexus 5 for one of the... Ones... here shortly. Poor speaker and microphone quality are just two things I can't deal with anymore with the Nexus 5.
Seems like HTC tried to just have the CPU running too hot, figuratively and literally. Underclock down to like....1958 max, and it should be fine then. I know my Nexus doesn't like being run at a max of 2258 for very long, if at all. I'll get random reboots on stock vanilla android, and ParanoidAndroid.

Selecting Security under settings cause Settings to force close

I had to start in safe mode to get security settings to open up for me. Not a great long term solution but it worked so I could change the unknown sources setting.
Thanks for the reply, how do you start in safe mode?
These are the instructions for the Note 3 but they work:
With the device powered off, press and hold the Power button until the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 logo appears then release.
With the logo on the screen, press and hold the Volume down button until Safe mode appears in the lower left of the screen then release.
Note This may take up to 45 seconds.
Thanks!

That kept happening to me and I finally figured out a solution! I kept having my apps reinstalled from Google and, whenever an app that I had previously used that required root access was installed, Settings would crash whenever I tried to open Security. So, it was a long process but I reinstalled only those apps that didn't need root access. Afterwards, I kept testing to make sure I could still access Security without the crash and, when something was installed that caused the crash again, I knew which app it was, uninstalled it, and all was fine again. I had to reset the phone 6 times to figure this out but all's good now!

Glad you got it working. Would you be able to tell me what app it was? I have the same problem.
I had so many apps that needed root that it just made sense to not have Google install my apps after resetting. I really can't recall specifically which one it was. What I do suggest, which will take a while but is so worth the time, is to make a list of what's on there now and only reinstall like 3 at a time and then check to make sure that everything's ok. If it is, install a couple more, etc. That way, if one screws it up, you'll know which one to uninstall rather than having to reset it all over again. At least if you do install one that needs root and, therefore, screws it up for you, you can just uninstall that one program. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. ☺
Was finally able to figure this out (for me anyway). Its my S View cover. With the cover off I have no problem getting into security put it back on and it forcecloses. I went to Best Buy and tried 2 others and they both caused the security to forceclose as well.
Was chatting with a Samsung Rep where they remotely control your phone and she came up with the conclusion that it is a bad app and wants me to do a factory reset and add the apps back 1 at a time. I will wait till I flash a ROM and do it then. I am leaning towards that it is a app. If every Note 4 with a S View cover had this issue then it would be more widely known.
I had the S cover and that wasn't the problem. Like I said, it was cos I was having Google automatically install my old apps, some of which were apps that needed root like Titanium Backup, Rom Toolbox, etc.. I was able to put Apex as my home, just not apps that needed root. Titanium is the reason I want root so much. Being able to clean up or delete apps I don't use.
Yes, i had the same problem with my s view cover. Once i took it off, i was able to go back into the security settings.

Random reboots after 6.0.1 update?

I used the OK1 tar through ODIN, then did a factory reset then took the 6.0.1 update. Yesterday I got probably 2 random reboots and now this morning I have had 4 one after another probably 5 minutes apart from each other. I am using the I heart radio app to listen to a local radio show and the phone keeps rebooting. I thought maybe it was the app causing this so I uninstalled and reinstalled it and the phone keeps rebooting. I recently purchased a replacement Anker battery and have been using it for a week now with no issues. Anyone have something similar like this happening? Anyway to fix this besides the obvious wipe everything clean and try again?
EDIT: It's the app, others are reporting the same issue with newer phones running Marshmallow.

Rooted? Are you seeing a pop-up for the reboot (prompt)? Screenshots or logs?
How did you upgrade to marshmallow? What update are you on? What ROM are you running? Custom kernel? If rooted stock with custom kernel, have you fully removed ItsOn and Knox? Did you wipe or factory reset? Include your steps to get an idea of what is causing the reboot issue.
(If stock un-rooted, you may have some residual data from Lollipop. If rooted with custom kernel, you may have files from ItsOn or Knox causing issues. Basically, un-rooted and rooted have their own set of concerns. Need more info to offer suggestions.)

Best description I can give is that at night when my nighclock is on. ...
the light on back and menu button will come on...
simultaneously the my note edge message will flash on the edge replacing the night clock for a few seconds (this is the background soft reset I think)...
the phone is not functional for these few seconds ie if i press a button to wake screen up then it will wait and hi locker won't let fingerprint work after this happens.
Rinse and repeat every few minutes.

Not an answer but how many of these applications you mention are third party applications?
Typically, lock-screen is only available a few seconds and screen is forced off; deep sleep may eventually occur but you have only a small amount of control to prevent deep sleep; that's usually a good thing. These apps may not be remaining fully functional when conflict results in screen going off unexpectedly or deep sleep trying to save your battery kicks in.
Dunno what compatibility is expected with multiple apps active while trying to keep lock-screen on or wake frequently? My use of lock-screen apps is limited to my third party alarm. I'm happy that it wakes to alarm; I can snooze and allow screen to go off quickly and wake for snooze until I dismiss the alarm (without having to unlock screen). That's about all I'm familiar with lock-screen applications.
My only suggestion would be to try to limit the third party apps used in lock-screen mode to find the maximum compatibility. Dunno, if those are third party applications conflicting, it's just a guess.
Maybe one or more of these applications aren't fully compatible with marshmallow?
On the subject of waking phone being slow, I think it was reported by non rooted users that factory reset cured that for some users. It's possible that if phone wasn't factory reset coming to Marshmallow from Lollipop, that factory resetting now would help.
