Back in December, I tried to upgrade my rooted 4.1 Note 2 to 4.3. Something (probably the fact that I was rooted) hosed the OTA upgrade, so my only recourse was the install the PhilZ recovery and the MK4 "stock+root" custom ROM. MK4 has been a constant pain, rebooting randomly, sometimes several times per day.
Now that 4.4.2 is out, I want to upgrade to that. I was hoping that since MK4 was quasi-stock, I'd be able to do the OTA update, but no such luck. When I attempt it, it fails part way though. I'll attach the failure text as well as the philz_recovery.log file.
Can anybody make out what exactly has happened? Is there any hope of merely upgrading to 4.4.2 without having to wipe my phone and start over with a new ROM? The MyBackup Pro backups never work as seamlessly as they should, and it takes me days to get everything configured back the way I like it. I definitely want to retain (or regain) root, of course. My primary goal is just to get a rock solid device like I had before MK4 was installed.
If installing a custom ROM is the only recourse, what's the best way to do that so that I end up with a very reliable, rooted device? The threads I've found here all appear to have been written within hours of 4.4.2 becoming available, and readily admit that the kinks weren't worked out yet.
Here's the text from the failure:

OTA update fails because it needs factory recovery, if you want to deal with the knox stuff go ahead and flash stock recovery thru Odin or the ne2 tar, if you don't want to deal with it just download stock rooted, classic or community rom 4.4.2, remember to go to rwilco's repository to get the ne2 modem as well if you wish to be updated to the latest everything, I'm on the mc2 bootloader and I don't have reboots or anything like that now running community 3.2, good luck

Thanks for the info. I'm long out of warranty and not on a contract, so I'm not sure that I need to worry about knox any more, do I?
Where would I find links for the the stock rooted ROM and rwilco's repository?
Here's the link to rwilco's repository

A stock rooted rom there's only one in the development thread, it's called community rom and it has a themed version as well in the same thread.

I read through a few of the 98 pages on the Community ROM thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785110). From the sound of things, that ROM is still in Alpha, which doesn't really sound like a very stable offering. I'm not super picky about my ROM being bone stock, but it does need to be VERY reliable and rootable, and it needs to support at least all of the stock features. If there are more features, that's fine. I'm really not interested in alpha testing a new release, though.
Are there any other ROMs that are based on 4.4 (KitKat) and are known to be fully functional and really reliable?

Well while I do call community an alpha it is stable and works great besides the spen clipping (hold pen button and outline something). The reason I called it an alpha is the N3 features I am working on are not there yet. When I started community my plans were to have a N3/S5 rom. To date it only has S5 things. Since it is not complete I called it an alpha. Beta will be out sometime in the near future and have the N3 features (air command). Also it is rooted already so no need to worry about that. Any other 4.4.2 out there will have the same issues as the community also.

I recently took the ota update to 4.1.2 mb1 and lost root. My question is can I use odin to flash [ROM|Stock Rooted] 3/3/13 Sprint Touchwiz Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (L710VPBMB1) Odex/DeOdex? And If so do I use the full ROM odex? And Do I have to flash anything besides the ROM? Or can I keep everything else stock?

Hey there buddy, welcome to XDA (I see this is your second post).
Anyways, do you still have a custom recovery? I'm assuming you don't, since it sounds like you went all the way back to stock unrooted in order o get the update (in the future, Freeza typically has the update for Root users a week or so after the OTA release, so no need to go back to stock unrooted).
Anyways, back to your current situation. Since you most-likely have the stock recovery, you'll have to go back to being rooted with either CWM or TWRP (I prefer TWRP, but they're both good). I personally use mskip's toolkit, it's fairly straightforward. You could also follow qbking77's rooting method. He does a good job explaining how to root. Samsung hasn't locked their bootloader and don't try to in their updates, so these rooting methods stand the test of time (and updates).
Once you have a custom recovery installed (or if you already have one installed), FIRST THING to do is perform a nandroid backup. THIS IS KEY. Once you have one done, go ahead and flash Freeza's Stock Rooted ROM. I'd recommend doing a clean flash, as it's the best way to minimize the chances of errors and bugs. Just wipe system and cache and dalvik cache, and then flash the downloaded ROM. And speaking of downloading, be sure to check the md5 sum of the download before you flash. Most problems with the stable ROMs here on XDA stem from bad downloads.
You can also check out other ROMs. I won't go too crazy on advertising here, but scroll through these two sub-forums, Android Development and Original Android Development. I've enjoyed most ROMs I've tried.
Hope this helps!

Ok, just out of curiousity... Before I took the OTA i was rooted 4.1.1 stock with stock recovery. Is there any way to do it the same? The method I used before was this [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter [SPR L710VPBLJ7] JB 4.1.1. It was super quick and easy.

Yeah, that same method should work. I personally like the custom recoveries, but understand your desires to leave it at stock recovery (not triggering the flash counter).
Like I mentioned before, Samsung hasn't (and most likely won't) locked their bootloaders, so any rooting method that has worked in the past should work in the future. Just make sure to read the last 3-4 pages of the thread for whatever method you're trying to use to see if there are any issues. I know an earlier version of mskip's toolkit was having issues with JB for a little bit (it's updated now).
Well I'm gonna give it a shot. Ill let you know how it turns out.

I've got a problem I installed the OTA and now I cant boot into android. Its stuck on starting apps. I have the stock recovery. How can I fix this?. What do I do? I can get to ODIN download mode. *edit** can get into safemode too. And I now have a custom recovery installed.
I still dont know what to do from here. How do I flash the downloaded rom because the new file I downloaded seems to be a zip and can only be flashed with CWM not ODIN. I cant place it in the right directory of my phone to do that.

I replied to your thread. I hope it works for what you need.
(Note - I'm unrooted and on stock MC2)
I'm going crazy at this point... I figured I'd just wait for my phone to get the OTA but it's already been 11 days, no OTA.
So then, fine, I figured I might as well use Kies to do the trick - no dice, I get the following message: "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies."
Whatever, I just hit up trusty old XDA to find the update.zip file that I can apply easily from stock recovery. I found the file here. After realizing I needed an SD card for some reason (since stock recovery doesn't have the option to apply update.zip from internal storage) I finally did it... Until it encountered an error and terminated. Rebooted, still on 4.1.2. Tried again, same problem.
THEN I started looking for the files I could use to push the update to my phone through Odin. This thread sent me to sammobile, which, after making me register, sent me to hotfile. I keep trying to press the "Regular Download" button but nothing happens... it's not downloading!
Now I'm super frustrated, can someone tell me how I can get my hands on this elusive beast? Again, I'm unrooted and stock and have no desire to flash a ROM.
Okay, I'd got here and follow the OP instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541395
Then i'd stop posting they same thing in to different sections. Just root your phone, place a custom recovery on it, and flash 4.3. I do want to sound rude or disrespectful but we have to keep the forums clean and clutter free.

Sorry, are you saying that the only way to update is by rooting and installing this ROM?
You should get the OTA, just got a notification today on mine and I'm not even on stock Might be a good to root though as there are nasty bootloader mods in 4.3. If you are rooted on 4.1.2 check out the Note 2 development threads for the mk4 zip and several mk4 based rom updates (synergy etc). Just flash the modem then the Rom. (use goo manager to make sure you're on the latest boot manager). No custom kernels that I've been able to find yet unfortunately. Figure since you're rooted this all makes sense to you
I'm on stock and waited for the update for many days. No dice. But then I installed Kies on my PC, connected the phone, and was prompted to run the update. Now running 4.3.
I posted it at the end of the thread here (it's hosted from my Dropbox account).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536242
This is the MK4 Stock Un rooted Odin file I found in a tmp folder on my computer while Kies was grabbing the update. I've had it up for a few days with no complaints and I've flashed it 3-4 times with no issues. Just to be safe, wipe data and cache AFTER update has completed.

Hello fellow members of XDA,
I am new to this whole thing of rooting and installing custom rom, so I’m kind of overwhelmed. I have done some poking around prior to this post and stumbled upon the Sticky and was wondering if the “[REF] [GUIDE] Welcome to your device, the Galaxy S III - by theexel” is this the standard to what I should be following?
I have a T999 on 4.1.2. I appreciate your time, recommendations, and advice that you have to offer. Thanks!
Update:
I was hoping you could answer some questions I have for Sanranhai's stockMod 4.3. If i followed the instructions while flashing the rom + one of the modems I'm still able to go back to older roms correct? Also if i decided to cmw restore to my backup (4.1.2 image) will the modem be the one I flashed from saranhai's or will it go back to how it originally was before? Thank you for your time.
Yes that's a Good Guide. What do you intend or trying to do ?

My intention was to root, and to flash a stable rom (hopefully 4.3) for daily use, getting rid of some bloatware to speed up my phone, getting a new feel and look for me phone and increase battery life if possible. I know my model is receiving the official 4.3 but according to this forum most people don't like what Samsung did to it. Since I'm still in the earlier software version, I thought I'd give custom roms' a try.

If you are looking for a pretty good stable 4.3 ROM I'd recommend Saranhai's StockMOD 4.3 .. I used it as my DD (Daily Driver) the past month but have been on Doc's 4.3 ROM before that (they both use the same Base and Doc had to stop because he Bricked his S3 fiddling around with new things).. .. I wouldn't recommend doing the Official 4.3 Update, many people updated and the problem is you can NOT downgrade firmware afterwards, yes flash other 4.3 Roms but no downgrading.. Also the whole Warranty Bit isn't attractive to people.. ... Last night I flashed CM11 4.4.1 (KitKat) and been using it since then. So far I am very happy with it, everything that I MYSELF use daily hasn't had any flaws. Batter life has been decent also but their have been mixed results.. If you're gonna take the leap into rooting/flashing just remember to always read the OP's instructions as well as make sure its for YOUR device (ie: T999, T999L, etc).. Reading and educating yourself is key!

I'll give rooting a try after I'm done with finals. What sort of things do i need to backup for safety measures as that guide isn't very detailed in that aspect of how to do it and what I WILL WANT to backup.
You are not at risk of loosing the Data. But if you feel like it, please mae sure your contacts are successfully synced to Google. If there are Games whose progress or score you want to back up then do that. Apart from that the usual pictures and music stuff.
Try My Backup app. It will let you make a backup even if you are not rooted.

According to the sticky guide I should be following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 but, there's a note in bold that said "Do not flash a prior release after flashing this, it has been reported to cause bricks, read the thread for more information." Does that mean after using that latest version to root my t-999 i cant go back to older roms?
The guide also recommend i should start with 4.0.4 roms, should i ignore that?

You assume correct. You need to root first. Take the Guide advice. Do not Try to flash latest 4.3 version of Root66. Use the 4.2 version instead. So long you stay completely away from Samsung's release of 4.3, you will do fine.

You can use Doc's Leaked Rom or Saranhai's StockMod just fine. No issues there. Only thing you should remember, is that if you use the Root66 4.3, it will update your Bootloader to UVUEMJC. If that happens, you will never be able to flash previous bootloaders or previous Root66 versions. In addition, this new bootloader introduces eFuse and a new Warranty Counter. Those can not be reset once tripped.

new question on 1st page, bump
I had my phone rooted before the update, but then I thought I'd try going without root once the update came out. But now I am rooted once again and running the "T999L 4.3 deodexed, Knox Free". But when I try to install cm (I tried 11 and 10.2), I either get the executing updater binary error, status 7 error, and when I removed the asserts, it just aborted installation. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated

I did that, tried both CWM and TWRP and it's still aborting the flash. It seems like the only rom it's letting me install is the deodexed 4.3
Actually I had a issue a few days where I accidentally wiped my internal memory and that is why I installed te deodexed 4.3, could that be a reason why nothing is working properly (I'm able to make backups but not restore them and what I mentioned before in my fist post)? Should I install the original 4.3 (with knox and everything) to get my phone on the correct thing and then use the knox remover from the forum before trying again?

Why dont you try this:
S3Rx 3.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2326763
Its basically the same thing, except its debloated with a few mods..
Just be sure you have the MK4 Modem..
if you have not updated the bootloader (DONT) It will trip your warranty counter..
Just be sure you flashed the MK4 Modem, then flash the 4.3 rom..
Also be sure to Flash the T999L Connectivity patch on top
with the Insecure Kernel.. If you dont flash the Kernel you will lose wifi connectivity..

Oops, I somehow missed realizing that that was the rom and was downloading an older version of it that was lower down on the post. I got this rom to work, but I am still unable to install other custom roms. I really liked the CM11 (4.4) rom, but after updating to 4.3 (unrooted), I am unable to install anything but 4.3 roms so it seems. I did update to the latest version of twrp and I also tried cwm, but I'm still getting failure messages, any idea on how to fix that? Thanks for your help so far

To be honest there isnt much difference between 4.4 and 4.3.. other than ART..
I much rather stay on 4.3 because it has App Ops, where 4.4 had it removed..
I much rather have an AOSP rom rather than Touchwiz, but no other ROM i have found that is non Touch Wiz
that has Wifi Calling

True, but I guess my issue is that I can't install any of the CM roms, not even 10.2 which is based on 4.3. I just like CM because of the customization and the rom you linked me to has some of them, but not all. I've already tried unrooting and re-rooting, but that still did not help. Is there a different way you're supposed to root after the 4.3 update? I've always followed the instructions on DocHoliday's T999L/T999N thread and before 4.3, I was able to use twrp to flash t999 roms without removing asserts, but now even removing the asserts, I can't install any custom roms

Different CM 10.2 roms as in stable, rc, nightly? I tried the stable version earlier and still no luck. I'm kind of starting to give up on it because I'm just getting frustrated lol

Im pretty new to this area myself.. I've had a few trial and error issues..
Flashing Nexus devices is far to easy compared to this.. But since they have no Micro SDcard reader..
I'll never own a Nexus phone..
This is the first phone I've rooted, I didn't have problems until after 4.3. But would you happen to know where I can find instructions on how to unroot this device? I was going to try to find an 100% 4.3 stock rom, unroot, and then try this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563955) to see if it would work and if it didn't, then I'll just leave my phone unrooted. But I can't find any instructions anywhere, the only one's I can find are DocHoliday's but that's to return to stock 4.1.2
Never mind, I figured out

AT&T variant Note 2 received 2nd Android 4.4.2 update (But NOT version4.4.4)
Unooted Note2 still on stock 4.4.2 received OTA notification of an upgrade to i317UCUCNJ1 available this morning, however the size of the download was not listed nor any changelog details (Nor any link to one.) Unable to find much online help regarding this update (Am I really just fortunate to be amongst the 1st to get it?) and since the phone had been functionally inconsistent of late I had little to lose from the update and thus upgraded it. I've still yet to find a changelog of the new improvements, but my initial observations of first using it is that (so far @least) the updates have provided enhancements to my (previously) seriously lagging device (delayed text messaging, inconsistent Internet reception in previously good locations, so much so, that I was just about to give up and replace it, since the Trevor after upgrade though my phone is behaving as it should again, so they seem to have put out a much needed stability update.
If anyone has a changelog or knows exactly what new features were added, I'd love to know too.
Curious... did your baseband (modem) update as well?
I just received the update and my baseband changed. I was also rooted and running custom recovery. Which I of course lost

What rom/kernel were you running before update? I'm running Zen Arcade's NE5 stock rom (deodexed version) with Agni kernel and TWRP 2.8.1.0 recovery.... OTA downloads fine, but on reboot (which reboots to recovery), update installation fails. So it either doesn't like the custom kernel... custom recovery... or rom being deodexed (or combination thereof).
I was actually on stock firmware and kernel at the time and had phils recovery. It said the same thing on mine after reboot and I thought it failed to until I noticed my baseband had changed
I was going to add that I was dealing with the same issue, and you might benefit from reading our experiences: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-2-att/help/todays-update-soft-bricked-phone-t2939649
But hey, force me into another thread because I'm a n00b. I don't give a ****ing ****.
Oops, wrong thread.
Hey guys, just wanted to mention that pstuart82's torrent is working now. It takes a few minutes to connect to peers, but I was able to download the file in about an hour. If you torrent this file, PLEASE SEED. This seems to be the only version on the internet, so let's keep it alive.

EDIT: Apparently my post is getting redirected to this thread because I'm new. If someone could let people in the main thread know that would be cool.
Camera not working
The rom works great and allowed me to recover from a bricked phone after a botched ATT update. I do however have a few issues:
Camera crashes when I try to take a picture.
I keep getting reminders about the ATT upatate to 4.4.4, If I try to install it fails.

Try a different camera app - see if problem follows. Camera app is fine in the ROM.
Your custom recovery is likely preventing the ota from completing. Either flash stock recovery and try again - if you want nj1 - or freeze the att software update apk using tibu or similar app.
Camera does not work
I tried two different camera apps and neither work.
Thank you for the suggestion about disabling the updates.I am hesitating on accepting the ATT update due to it bricking rooted phones.
where can i find stock recovery zip for 4.4.2 I317UCUCNE5
Need a stock recovery that I can overwrite the TeamWin with. this Stock ROM 4.4.2 I317UCUCNE5 works just fine, but TeamWin prevents all the OTAs from succeeding. Any pointers to where I can download the stock recovery for this version?

The OP of my NE5 stock thread has a cwm/twrp flashable for the stock recovery for NE5.
If you are looking to get to NJ1, I'll be publishing the same set of packages in a day or so.
I am currently using a OnePlus One but tried to bring my AT&T Note 2 back to stock.
I have been flashing roms for years now but somehow managed to trip the Knox efuse.
When I Odin flash back to LJ2 stock, I boot into recovery and wipe Cache and factory reset. It boots but eventually freezes after skipping all the setup steps.
After multiple tries with the same result, I Odin flashed the NE5 without recovery but either get a freeze up or unknown baseband.
It's been days of trial and error.... Can anybody help me get my SGH-I317 running correctly again? Thank you to anyone who can help. I have searched and searched without finding any workable solutions.
Edit: I am not concerned with the Knox warranty void... I just need a working phone.
Final edit: I finally figured out that after using Odin to flash LJ2 stock, I had to flash both MK6 param and tz files.
The phone is now working and I already ran the MH3 update. Currently downloading the MK6 OTA update!
Thank you all!!

ROM Newb
Goal: I have an i317 (AT&T) that I would like to apply the latest (stable) ROM on and use via T-Mobile network with all the bells and whistles working.
Current Situation: Downgraded to stock 4.1.1 via Odin then unlocked network, works well on T-Mobile...but no tethering, resolved with ES File Explorer.
Request: Can someone provide a descriptive step by step solution to accomplish my goal? FYI, I have downloaded a ROM (d-h.st slash 8HG), but read the wifi stops?
Look, I have been an IT consultant for over 15 years, felt I can handle anything...embarrassed to say it, but this is not easy. I have read too many blogs already and my brain hurts.
