I noticed that both my file managers (ES File Explorer and FX) have lost access to be able to write to my SD Card within the past week.
I found this solution, SD Fix, but the app stated that my device appears to already have write access to SD Card.
I'm rooted, running an AOSP 4.4.4 ROM (Omni) and can't figure out how to write to SD card.
Anyone else having this issue?
I've had that problem with the internal sdcard when restoring nand backups between tw and cm rams. I had to reformat the internal sdcard to get past the issue.
Doesn't hurt to give that a try. Thank you. Will give it a shot and report results.
Thanks!!!
Thanks..

Thank you sir! This was exactly my issue, but worse.
I actually have a corrupted 64GB Sandisk Microsd card, which cannot be formatted. Found many complaints online about this card and Samsung devices. I tried formatting the card in Linux, Windows - no avail. Kept getting "card is write protected" error.
I finally contacted Sandisk and they confirmed it's a known issue. Card has lifetime warranty so they are going to replace it.

Hey everyone. Got an annoying problem.
So I just tried to install a ROM, downloaded the file onto my SD card. Went into recovery. I didn't see my external SD card under Install from ZIP
Usually I see install from SD card and install from external SD card.
I went into mounts to try to see if I could mount it. External_SD was able to be mounted but when I tried to mount SD card it wouldn't mount.
I also had a weird problem in the ROM itself. I couldn't see my external_sd card folder no more. When I go into a TW based ROM and select My Files from the app drawer, it shows the sd card and the ext_sdcard. But when I go into Root explorer, there used to be a folder in the root directory for ext_sdcard. Its not there anymore. I went into mnt/ and saw it there.
Did something happen to my recovery? I flashed CWM to the latest version and confirmed MD5.
Any help would be appreciated. I rather flash and save my ROM filed in my SD card and not internal memory.
Newest CWM Doesnt access the ext sd card. he said on his twitter he plans to fix it.

correct, for now all flashing to be done through internal memory only.
this message brought to you by my GalaxyS3 running Phantom's Blazer
TeamEPIC's recovery does access both. I've been using it. Trying another one as well just to see.
Thanks everyone. Thought I was going crazy.
TWRP for the win!
Do you know if your SD card is still good (or going bad)? It's a reasonably obvious question, but I had 2 SanDisk 32 GB cards go bad on me so I know the frustration. The /mnt/extSdCard in Root Explorer is a little misleading, I can create empty files in there without actually having a card in the slot. Something I discovered when I was troubleshooting my bad cards. Just a thought.
I have had my GS3 for a little over a month, rooted and had no issues, I installed another rom with no issue. Unfortunately when I tried to install a CM10 or AOKP rom, each say my ext sd card is damaged and needs to be formatted. I try to format, but it hangs and then just quits without completing the task.
I have tried formatting to fat32 on my PC, downloaded EaseUS Disk utility to format, but none seem to work. When I restore back into the previous rom, it still says damaged and then I can format and start over only in that non AOSP/AOKP rom.
I boot into recovery when the AOSP/AOKP roms are loaded and it wont even mount or format in recovery either.
Any ideas?

I think I read somewhere that in CM10/AOKP that it won't read/understand exFat very well.
So, formatting to Fat32 is definitely the way to go.
When I used some other programs it would say the same thing... that my card was damaged and had to be fixed.
I had a heck of a time finding a program that would do it for me on my 64gb sdxc SanDisk card!
But I found a free one called GUI Fat 32 Format that actually worked.
Click this link and it will start to download:
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe
It didn't work immediately, for me at first, but after a few tries it actually worked very well.
I think that once you get it into Fat32 all of your problems will go away. Hope so anyway.:cyclops:

Glad it worked for you!

I had a similar issue... I flashed an AOSP ROM on my phone n it corrupted my sd card and wouldn't format. before formatting I went back to a touchwiz ROM and it still said it was a bad sd card and needed to format I ended up formatting my card in my phone and lost all my data. I put music on my sd card and removed the sd card from my phone before flashing another AOSP ROM. After I installed another AOSP ROM I re-inserted the sd card and it again said it was bad and needed to be reformatted...
So my question is...How can you use a 64gb sd card on an AOSP ROM...I'm back on touchwiz for now. Sd card works fine.
Does formatting the sd card in your phone format it to exfat and not fat32?

Wait, so you're saying that AOKP/CM10 don't have the necessary drivers to handle exFAT formatted sd cards?
Do you remember where/how you came upon this information? Was this issue particular to 64gb SDXC cards vs smaller SDHC cards or maybe to certain classes of cards?
I find this shocking, but I can't say it isn't unfounded.
I have a 64gb uhs-1 sandisk card coming from newegg in a few days, so I'm obviously concerned.
Any insight you could provide is greatly appreciated!
Hey guys... after doing some fooling around I've found out some (useful) information for people with 64 gb sd cards...
1. When you format an sd card while its inside your phone it will format it to exFat.... which is fine if you plan on only staying on TW ROMs. This format is not compatible with TWRP Recovery and has given me issues (causing me to loose all my data on my card) just by flashing an AOSP ROM
2. If you use the program posted in the second post(thanks iomega311) you can format your sd card to Fat32 and it will now work on TW ROMs, TWRP, and AOSP ROMs.
Hope this helps for anyone with SD Card Questions/issues.
In my opinion... Never program sd cards on phone... Always use a computer. Especially if you want it done right!!!!

CM 10 which all the AOSP roms are based off does not support exFAT since it is a proprietary format and they don't want any legal trouble. The best way to format a 64GB gard is with GUI formatter
What allocation size did you guys use? Just got my 64GB SDXC and need to format it so that I can use it on CM10.
Alright though I think the title says it all, I have a 64GB SanDisk micro SDXC card that I bought for my T-Mobile M8 and the card is formatted exFat using the built-in storage menu in settings.
My dilemma is that though everything seems to be correct, every time I reboot the phone or remove and reinstall the card or unmount the card, it can not be remounted without formatting it first and my PC doesn't recognize the card until it's been reformatted and remounted in the phone again.
I've read all about KitKat's ridiculous new sdcard policies and restrictions but I genuinely don't believe that my problem is related to the security updates that came with KitKat. I'm thinking there is another underlying problem.
I'm currently running ViperONE 1.8.0. Though I don't believe ViperONE is the cause.
any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had same problems and i did format my sd card on my pc with win 7 in fAT32 using the "GUIFORMAT" free software, just do a search on Google, then I did put back my sd card in the phone, reboot the phone multiple time, copy files and after more than 3 days still work no problem

And this is with a 64GB card? I had it formatted to FAT32 earlier today and to my surprise it did not corrupt the card after a reboot but it DID have trouble re-mounting the card.
I'll try it again with the program you suggested and see if that changes anything. Thanks for the suggestion.
I have a freshly formatted 32 gb micro SD card (fat32) that I put in my Freshly rooted phone using Bliss Pop Rom. When I boot up my phone, go to storage and mount the micro SD, it automatically says that it now has 15bgb on it. Using ES file explorer I examine the contents of the card and there is nothing on it but yet it reads as 15gb left. What's worse is that when I try to copy or move a file to it, a message saying not enough space please free up space to proceed. I Googled the crap out of this issue. No luck. Please help. I use a lot of storage and the SD card is important to me.
Try on stock rom. If it works then stay on stock. Can't stress this enough. CM is to play around with but not as a daily driver. CM is garbage

Try installing and running SDFix from Google Play Store. Make sure you have a nandroid backup before you do >anything< to your device.

Just to follow up. . I formatted the card on a PC using a an SD card adapter. After that I had the problem. I researched it and apparently that can mess up, corrupt micro SD cards. So I popped the same micro SD card in my Galaxy s5 and formatted it and the tried it in my LG G3 and it mounted and now works great.
Your microSD card isn't formatted properly

SD cards and microSD cards should not be formatted by the Windows, Apple, or other default program. If you're running Windows, download and install SDFormatter. SD cards have special hidden files that are deleted by the Windows regular formatter. SDFormatter handles the removable media properly.
If you are going to use the SD or mSD card in a particular device, you should >always< format the card in that device before using it.
Yes, what the previous poster said... I wish you could have asked before you did it. Windows is bad at formatting for anything other than NTFS and so is Mac. If you have to format at all, use TWRP. But me personally I recommend to never ever format. I have always managed to turn them into RAW due to multiple formatting because like ivanabq said, Windows just deleted those files. These files are used by Android to read where everything is and if they are gone, it doesn't know how to read the card anymore. Good luck. Hope you get the space back.
Also could you tell us the brand of your microSD? Sometimes the knockoff brands will advertise more space and once you format it, it reveals that it is far less. You might be able to get a full refund knockoff or not.
Good evening.
I tried two ROMS lately : genysis 3.5 and official CM 13. Both have the following issues : titanium backup does not detect my micro sd card and root explorer detects it but absolutely can not write on it. What can I do to solve these problems ?
Best regards.
Marshmallow is finicky with SD cards. What I would do is backup the entire card to a pc/laptop, then format using the phone. If you go to settings/storage, select your SD card, click the 3 dot menu, and you'll be given the option to format. For me, using Genisys 3.5, I had the option to format as either portable or internal. I chose internal, and haven't had any problems with apps writing to it, including TiBackup.
When i touch the format button, my phone does not give me the option of formatting as internal storage. Is there another method to do that ?
Ah I forgot to tell about another issue I have. Everytime I plug my OTG USB key on my phone, I get an error message saying that the storage is corrupted and that I have to format it but when I do root explorer can not read it. This is very strange because it works pefectly with my samsung galaxy note 3. Any idea how to solve that problem ?
Are you using a good quality/known brand SD card? If the card is too slow the option to format as internal may not be present from what I understand. I'm using a SanDisk Extreme U3 card. Supposedly faster than class 10.
If you're having these problems with CM13 I can't offer much assistance. I have CM13 loaded on my LGG2 and USB-OTG doesn't work at all. If your phone is saying the card is corrupted try formatting in your computer. If that doesn't help, get yourself a new/good quality card.
I'm using a lexar 300x. Is it too slow to format it as internal storage ?
That being said, I solved 2 of my 3 issues by reinstalling genisys 3.5 but not the theme 3.2 and now root explorer can read my otg usb key and write on my sd card.
Titanium backup still can not detect my sd card but it's no big deal because I use another software to backup my apps on my sd card.
Thanks for your participation anyway.
