Howdy all,
First off, let me apologize if this has been brought up before, I've been diligently researching the past couple of days and couldn't find anyone that asked a similar question, so I'm asking now.
Anyways I'm looking for a new phone and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with some variant of the s4. The question now, with the release of the nexus edition being so close, I can't decide which one to go for.
I do want something as close to stock as possible, hence my interest in the nexus edition.
Normally, it'd be no question, I'd just wait it out, however I was looking on Tmobile's site last night and it seems there might have been a price drop in the full retail price? It's saying it's now 579.
It wouldn't be a huge deal if I had to flash a new rom, but at the same time, it would be kind of nice if I didn't have to worry about functionality and compatibility issues, etc...
I basically want something that doesn't have TouchWiz
Just having a little trouble deciding and would appreciate opinions.
On a somewhat related note too, is the Tmobile's online price usually the same in the store?
Thanks everyone!
It will very the same either way. If you get the normal version or the GE version. Flashing an AOSP roms will pretty much be the same. The extra sensors will not work a day and all Samsung features will be gone. Nothing really special about the GE version. It is even rumored Samsung will still control the updates. If you can wait I would hold out for the next nexus due out soon.

Well I can tell you the T Mobile $579 price is available online and in stores. But I think it only lasts until July 13th.
And it's like an $80 difference between the T Mobile sale price and the Google price. Add in shipping and it's easily a $100 difference.
Yes the Nexus version will be pure AOSP and everything will work right. But you could put any of the CM or AOKP varient ROMs on the T Mobile version right now and have 99% funcationality with only an occassional hiccup here and there. They are pretty solid builds even for being early builds. And you can easily make any of those look and act like pure AOSP, with still having some of the functionality of CM under the hood if you need it.
On top of that I'd bet the Nexus version isn't out for a full day before the pure AOSP Sock rom that comes on it is available for download and flashing on your T Mobile version.
So my opinion, if you can root and mod a phone, save the $100 and buy now. Turn it into a put AOSP later.
The biggest disadvantage is that no one will push OTA updates to you. You'll have to download them and install them yourself.
Like the guy above said theres no difference between them you can flash the nexus edition roms to the carrier editions plus if you buy it now on tmobile you get it for a lot cheaper than google :good:
hmmmm all good points...
Given that I capped out of my highspeed data for this month anyways, I think I might as well wait it out just to see what happens after wed.
Thanks for the thoughts everyone, still welcoming any other opinions as well!
I echo the thoughts. With the T-Mobile version having an unlocked bootloader, all AT&T/T-Mobile bands available, and the fact that when using the proper procedures, one can flash any S4 variant's ROMs, I see no reason why NOT to save $100 or so now. Go ahead and get your S4, use CM or other AOSP type ROMs for now, then switch to pure AOSP once it's available. I don't think it will take much more than a day (if that long) after release for 100% pure AOSP to be available in some way, shape, or form for the S4.

I have the same issues, buy T-mo or GE S4. Great thread so far!
I did not realize, however, that Tmo S4 was unlocked bootloader. I thought that one of the GE advantages was unlocked bootloader + root. So I thought IF you got a TMO, you had to unlock root it yourself, and with GE, you didn't.
Can someone confirm again for me that tmo S4 is unlocked?
Anyone know if the ATT one is unlocked?
Can the ATT S4 run on tmo with NO issues, or does it need a radio flash?
An advantage that I see is that the Tmo S4 with touchwiz DOES have benefits, I've heard that TW enables some sensors that GE will NOT, so that pure stock no TW GE S4 won't use all the hardware.
Can anyone elaborate on exactly WHAT sensors stock google will NOT have that TW version will?
Thanks for the help!

All of the special sensors will be disabled. No IR sensors and none of the TW features will work. No it doesn't come pre-rooted. You still have to manually root it. Only the ATT version has a locked boot loader. All the rest are up locked.

T-Mobile S4 does not have a locked bootloader. It IS SIM-locked, which I believe is what you're thinking here; but that's easily fixed. Also, the M1919 is so easy to root, it really shouldn't really even enter into the consideration of whether the GE is pre-rooted or not. AT&T, Verizon, etc are the ones which have the locked bootloader and are also obviously SIM-locked as well. I swear I read somewhere that the GE S4 is going to be pretty much the M1919 but with officially supported AOSP instead of TouchWiz. Don't quote me on that, I can't find the source nor am I really looking for it, I just believe I read that somewhere...
Any S4 (minus the i9500) can run any S4's (minus the i9500 again) custom CWM/TWRP flashable ROMs without flashing radios. I'm using a T-Mobile device on Net10 prepaid (but started out using it on AT&T's network) and all I did was SIM-unlock and change the APN and I had 4G LTE on AT&T's network straight out of the box. The AT&T S4 works *better* on T-Mobile networks with the AWS band enabled, which is a modified AT&T radio; but it will still pick up most of T-Mobile's network.
As for which features/sensors AOSP won't have that TW will: all TW-specific features. The IR blaster, for one; but if it's specific to TW, don't expect the GE to have in AOSP. I don't want to make an assumption here, but I would venture to say that the sensors won't actually be disabled, they just can't be made use of in AOSP. I would think that flashing TW on the GE would more than likely enable the use of all the sensors while in TW, seeing as the closed-source drivers for those sensors would then be present... not saying that will be the case, but I don't see why it wouldn't work unless those sensors were physically removed from the device for the GE.

Gagh!!!! Decided to just get the TMobile one, so I went today.
Just a FYI if you already have a TMobile account, went to two different stores today, neither would sell me a phone at the 579 price w/out moving to a more expensive plan for a month first.

Really? I got mine on Monday while still under a contract and they were happy to sell it to me for $579 at the store. I made no changes to my plan at the time, and then today I easily switched from a contract to a cheaper no contract plan

Sadly yes. I think the reason it I couldn't get it is cause I have that $30 a month prepaid plan and I guess they can't sell em to people on prepaid for some weird reason? I may try other stores tomorrow.

Oh. Yeah the 579 clearly only applies with the sign up or continuation of a qualifying plan.
The prepaid plans are not qualifying. So the rule is not that you have to get a more expensive plan to get the deal, but the qualifying plans are all more expensive than your current one.

Drat! heh. I normally wouldn't mind swapping plans but given the price and the fact I mostly use data, and very rarely use it as a phone, I'm kinda kneen on keeping my plan.
They said they could swap me back to my current plan after the month is up but I'm a bit wary of that idea since it was kinda troublesome to get it in the first place.

Or just okay the $629 full price at the store. Spend the extra $50 on the device and keep your insanely low rate plan.

Can anyone confirm for certain that the tmo version will be able to use the Nexus edition roms immediately? I don't see where there would be a problem, just want to confirm.
I would love to buy a sgs4 but I would also like to use the latest Android right away. Currently on my nexus devices, I can flash something the day it comes out. Likely that will be the same for the sgs4 Google edition, which makes sense it would translate over to the tmo version as well. So in theory, you could flash within a day or so of the sgs4 version coming out. Thoughts?
Also, has anyone confirmed they will release the source as well?
It sounds like best case scenario, I could run my sgs4 either touchwiz or aosp bug free. With prompt Google releases
Why would anyone buy the Google edition one then? Clearly you can get it cheaper elsewhere with the same functionality

Just wondering if/when we can flash AOSP from the Google Edition that it will somehow repartition the device to be able to use all the space since even with CM right now only about 9.75 GB is usable.

Has anyone used the SGH-I257M on US AT&T?
As I understand, it has the bands for multiple networks. The reason for asking is AT&T is dragging their feet.
Info I got from AT&T was that it has enough roll outs for Christmas and are not going to bring out the S4 Mini until January. My contract is up, S3 & S4 are too big for a pocket, I ditched my S3, I'm using an S2 clocked at 1.7 and gutted, nice phone, but time for a new toy to play with. I'm tired of waiting on the 'Mini', but flashable US Basebands will be unavailable for some time so I'm hoping someone has done this. More specifically meaning the 'non branded' SGH i257M and a functional LTE band 17. TIA

If you get an unlocked SGH-I257M from Canada it will work for AT&T with LTE. I got one as an early Christmas gift for my girlfriend and it works no problem. I just put her 4G microSIM from her old phone (Pantech Burst) and set it up. The only thing I had to do was add the APN for AT&T 4G. Also, I believe it was the ChatON app that would not work in the US but it wasn't important.
EDIT: Also, a question I was thinking of as well is, if when the AT&T version comes out (or the firmware at least) could the AT&T I257 firmware be flashed on an I257M? That would minimize any issues from the phone's software..

I appreciate the reply. That is good to know. Yeah, ChatON is of no interest. As for flashing, There are multiple reports that the 9195 ROM flashes OK on the M's, 9195 also adds the FM radio that is not given functionality in the M's but restored with the 9195 OS so I would assume the AT&T version should be no problem provided AT&T isn't pulling another non standard hardware version as they have in the past with some phones. (FCC filings don't indicate that) AT&T seems to have developed a phobia in recent years about their phones being retrofitted with new OS's. Also likely they are waiting for 4.3 or a Knox implementation in the deluded belief that it is secure. Thanks again for the heads up on function, looks like the price from Canada isn't too bad right now.

Hi. Thank you for sharing this. I actually just bought a Canadian i257M as well and now I'm waiting for it to get shipped to me. Question; do the samsung media apps work while in the US? For example, media hub, video hub and music hub? I ask because i used to own a GS4 from att and I purchased a lot of media on those apps and would like to continue using them if possible on the GS4 mini if possible.
Much appreciated!

You may have some disappointment, Samsung has switched to 'Samsung Hub' on the new phones, replacing the older Media hubs and interoperability suffers a lot. T-Mobile offers a Media Hub for their new phones, AT&T may as well since the Sammy app's leave so much behind. It's going to be a wait and see I suspect. With luck AT&T will have Media Hub apps instead of the newer Samsung replacements and all you will have to do is wait. It seems quite a few people have money tied up in the old system and that may keep it alive.
But other than that, all you need to get on line is write your carrier APN. The phone is turn-key as it is. I just got an 'M' and after gutting the OS, dropping in an APN and editing the Build Prop a little (not needed) it works great on US AT&T.
There are more and more of the i257M's turning up recently in the States and hopefully someone will be able to clarify the Media Hub issue more for you better than this.
Where are you guys getting unlocked 257Ms? I can't find anything on ebay and the internet suggests canadagsm may not be reputable.
Hi...wondering if you can help given you are on AT&T 4G LTE. My i257M arrived today from canadagsm and it appears rooted. Surprise, but maybe good. BTW...canadagsm handled this order ok, not great and not responsive, but they did deliver. Anyway so far so good, but I am also on AT&T 4G LTE and wondering how to edit the APN? Why? Right now I am only getting H+ connectivity. So wondering if there is a way to do this voa the hardware or only via software? Also, can you post the Build Prop? Lastly, due to rooted phones being disallowed on my company network I can only use a stock ROM.
Lastly, as I write this I ended up going into the boot ROM and which is not CWM and for the last 30 minutes and selecting install the volume up, the screen shows DOWNLOADING, DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!! However, I am not aware I am downloading anything and seeing this screen is a bit scary. I may mess with this a little more by the time anyone gets a chance to respond, so we will see.
Thanks in advance, malloy0

I just made a thread abouu this. Just picked up a i257m and on every kind of combination of rom I'm stuck at only h+. I spent a few hours on the phone with cs to figure out why after googling a few other cases similar to ours. Turns out att doesn't support unlocked phones so the account isn't setup to push lte. What others have done, and what I'm going to try to do tomorrow is pop the sim into an att phone thss can do LTE and set it up and switch back and it should follow.
Att were assholes and wouldn't setup a device on my sim temporarily to prove to me LTE worked on my account. We popped my dim into a display g2 that was getting LTE, and got only h+. So I told him to pop the display sim in mine to see if I can get LTE, it only triggered the LTE option in the settings but never popped up saying it was getting any.. Hmm
Edit: got lte working with a new sim! All works perfect on att!

Just wanted to throw in an update, I took the risk and ordered a 257M from CanadaGSM. Minor hiccup with the webpage didn't forward my address to their credit card processor, but they sent me an e-mail and a paypal invoice, and shipped out the phone the same day I paid. Quick customer service response time via e-mail, too (as in within a few minutes). It works great on Straight Talk, but I don't live in an LTE area so I can't test that till this weekend.
It rooted easily, and now it's running PAC.
Edited to add some information.

Good news for CanadaGSM...I too was leery, but after a few emails and phone calls they stepped it up big time. For now I have retired the S5 mini in favor of a Nokia Lumia 520 for $65!! Woo-eeee!! It's a super smooth phone. Apps are a little limited, but still have found everything I need except "stay awake" with charging. as for the S4 mini on LTE? No luck at all and expect one of two things...1) it's a locked Rogers phone and I am on AT&T, thus they will not allow LTE or the phone is not truly LTE capable.

Use the 9195 root method and 9195 roms, same phone just different lte bands.
What I did was use Odin to flash recovery then flashed the root kit then used the unlock app from the play store to be able to run att. Then I flashed my liquidsmooth and havent looked back!
I used Odin to flash philz touch recovery, then flashed the PAC nightly. Only issues so far are ROM related, like launcher preference and battery drain

I am going to buy LG G820TM. I have a couple of questions about this.
I plan to use the phone in Ukraine. What may not work, what works in the US?
How to know if it is unlocked?
Is it difficult to unlock it?
What are the disadvantages if it is not unlocked, does it fully work not in the USA?
Is it T-Mobile?
How much worse is the fps and slows down the phone from android 12? Which is better for Android 11 or 12 performance?
should I buy it?

I am going to buy LG G820TM. I have a couple of questions about this.
I plan to use the phone in Ukraine. What may not work, what works in the US?
How to know if it is unlocked?
Is it difficult to unlock it?
What are the disadvantages if it is not unlocked, does it fully work not in the USA?

To know if it is unlocked is simple; put in a sim card from any carrier but t-mobile, if it connects, it's unlocked, if it doesn't, it's locked.
To unlock it you would have to use a remote service and pay $. Oddly, the one I used is in the country you plan to use it.
The G8 is capable of doing VoLTE and VoWifi, but your carrier has to support them also, and the rom will have to have the needed configuration for that carrier.
Sorry don't know anything about the fps re 12 vs 11.
Should you buy it? I'd suggest no. I think you'd be better off with a phone like a Sammy, which will definitely have a rom specific for that area, which means it would have all the specific requirements for the local carriers. Additionally, it would be pretty easy to get a rom on a Sammy (patched Odin) if the phone you buy isn't for your area. Getting a rom on a G8 isn't anywhere near as easy.
Good luck with it, and all the best to the people of Ukraine! Cheers
Thanks a lot! You helped me a lot. But my budget allows me to buy only these phones, which are quite powerful.
I have already noticed to buy LG G8 G820TM but suddenly I noticed one detail...
I read that there is a temporary unlock on t-mobile, which can end 30 days after purchase (some people write that even after half a year)
Will there be such problems with the phone on Verizon?
There are no temporary unlocks like this on Verizon?
Which is better then to take, Verizon or T-Mobile?
(there are no other options in my market)
I really need your help in this matter..
