Wanted to know if anyone has already done this or wanted this..
I wanted to have GPS icon appear on the header when the gps is turned on. Obvisouly due to the program working I will know if the gps is on, just thought it would be cool to have an icon display like when you are connected to BT device or similar.
I figure once the software makes the call to open the gps device, all we would need to do is call for its status, of if its opened then display icon.
Anyway let me know.
Burn
Hmm most GPS Applications are Fullscreen, or at least i want the Header to be hidden, so i think its perfect the way it is, with the Orange LED indicator ;P
"all" there is to be done would be a program that checks if GPS COM Port is opened, since this is indicated by the left Orange LED, there is already some "software" sensing the open COM Port, so i think it should be possible to reroute that to a GPS Icon Indicator on Today screen or taskbar, but i'm not sure...
GPS Issue
While trying to find out if my GPS "static navigation" was off, I think I might have screwed up the receiver.
I was trying to use a golf gps program, and watch the yardage update constantly.
I used SirfTech, and MMSirfSetup to try and turn off static navigation. However MMSirfSetup seemed to just hang up, and SirfTech seemed to actually work, but now I can not get my golf program back up and running to see the satellites.
I am going to re flash the rom and see if that helps...
ANY SUGGESTIONS?????????????

but would like it to show status e.g GPS on/data but no lock/locked position. Similar to the wifi icon.
Advantage would be that you wouldn't have to fire up your app (e.g tom tom) only to find you have no signal

Easily do-able but one problem i foresee, can more than one program use the gps com port? not usually, so u'd have to use some program like "gpsGate" to create virtual gps com-ports. then ur icon program can read in the gps signal, process it and change the icon to suite the data flow. utlimately a very simple application and one i think i might do.
I'm a developer, write a free gps tracking system. bought an orbit cos it can be programmed and has a gps receiver and mobile connection all built in. give me a short while and I'll have the app up and running
Sean
Nice!
I am embedded software engineer and am just getting started in the CE world, but I firgued that it would be pretty easy to just catch when the program calls gpsOpen() or something of that nature. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with.

Sounds great
FYI I can run concurrent apps all using the same com port (navizon, memory map, TomTom and GPS Gate) without a problem.
Thanks tajw. btw done some digging and wm5/6 use an "intermediate driver" which accounts for your being able to access to gps from multiple apps.
Got my first app up and running. initialized the gps and displays rmc information
I thought of having a dot on the toolbar/task bar/program icon to signify whats happening, for example
black for no data
red for no fix
yellow for fix with < XX sats
green got a fix with > XX sats
ok,
Icon tray indicators:
black is no gps connection
red is gps data but no satelites
yellow will mean <= 3 satelites in view
green will mean >= 4 satelites in view
the distinction between yellow and green is that yellow indicates a 2D fix on your position, whilst green indicates a 3D fix. Not all gps hardware is capable of 3D fix inspite of having the sats to do it, but the more sats the better the fix so its good enough.
Should have a small tray app ready by end of next week.
Good news (for me anyway).
Application works nicely, minimising to the task tray and updates the icon depending on the gps signal data.
I have to polish off a few bits. When thats finished I'll post the .exe up here for others to test. Its tiny (38k) but I'll try and get it smaller.
You know, its cute! As you go in a building it goes red (no signal). As you go out a building it goes green! in the city it flickers green and yellow, even red sometimes. On my XDA it also appears to keep the GPS device active even when device is in sleep mode, so finding the fix again takes even less time than the first time (1-2 seconds rather than 20). also the battery isn't drained noticably.
Definitely looking forward to having a try with this programme, it's sounding good. Especially as I have moved to a town I don't know and GPS is becoming my new best friend.
GPS Spot
OK.
I think I've added the .zip file containing my little gps application.
Its build to work on my Xda Orbit. Would like to know if it works on anyone else orbit or any other device.
Install: just unzip and run from a directory.
Instructions:
The app will minimise to the tray when you press ok or top-right X.
Tray icon changes colour dependingo n the gps status
Red mean no satellite data
Yellow means between 1 and 3 satellites (2D fix)
Green means 4 or more satellites (3D fix)
Exit the program using the exit menu or kill the process.
You can also download it from my webserver:
gps.kicks-ass.net/gps_buddy/GPSSpot.asp
Have fun.

I'm testing it on a Glofiish X800, seems to work well.
I've notice that the GPS remain active when the X800 is in stand by, so I have to close or leave it open, based on my need.
This is good for me, 'cause some times I want to have the GPS on and the screen off to preserv battery life
Seems to be working fine on my Orbit. Although this is the worst week for testing it as I've only been sticking to the parts of town I know for once.
I know this is an old thread, probably no support anymore but the apps worked on my Topaz. It would be nice if the spots can be changed to a satelite icons instead
my phone has a big lag when hanging a call , showing me : call tine : xx xx
i can`t use anything until this message disappear, and the bad thing is that it stays there for around 6-7 seconds.
this is not happening all the time, but in 7 times from 10 calls is there.
i am using the MOTO Blur launcher, Moto_Version.2.5.1.1.MB525.Retail.en.CEE
what should i do ? is there a fix or something ?
should i try another launcher ?
edit: with Launcher Pro, free version , it happens the same thing, but rarely.
Try to use a different dialer:
Dialer One
Get on Market.
I think this can solve your problems.
and another thing related to lag is that when i receive a call , somethimes i slide the green "thing" , but nothing happens , and after 2 seconds or so , the call is on.
if i slide it all the way to the right to answer , nothing happens, the screen remains the same , with the "slide to answer" or "slide to ignore" slides .. and after 2 seconds, the call is connected
i have to be patient, and press repeatedly the "slide to answer" to actually move the slide to the right.
this is kind of annoying .
i have few applications installed : Adobe Reader, Angry Birds, Battery Mix, Bluetooth File Transfer, 2g-3g OnOff, ClockQ, Facebook , Flashlight, IMDb, Linda Manager, MyPhoneExplorer, Smooth Calendar, SoundHound .
i don`t think any of these apps has something to do related with my problem , if so , please report to me

You can use a app named OS Monitor to see what is eating your cpu.
If your rom is a Stock one, something you installed is interfering with you phone dialer.

No idea about the problem. If nothing else works, you may try a factory reset/wipe.
This is not a new issue. Posts I've read have solved it by going into the dialer app under "manage applications" and clearing data. Maybe will work for you.

the stock dialer doesn't appear in the " manage applications", only apps that you install from market or any other sources .
i installed another dialer , Dialer One, and under manage applications, it hasn't any "clear cache" option
guess that clearing data by going into the dialer app under "manage applications" is not possible.
any other ideas ?

i did that and called me from another phone, answered, and the same thing in OS Monitor, only Android System 2-10-15-20%, OS Monitor 25-30%, and Launcher Pro 1-2 % ..
after i hang up, the 3-4 seconds of lag was there, and after disappearing , the dialer had an 12% value, and reduced to 0% in 2 seconds.
i`ll do a soft reset, hope that will be the case
off topic : what`s the difference between soft reset , hard reset and wipe data ?
I've got the same problem. Dialer (stock or custom, no difference) on my defy lags even more. It can take from 4 seconds to 10 at least. Sometimes if you get calls the moment you hang up the previous one, it slows down even more, so the dialer is completely unresponsive for quite a long time. Only a turn-off->on helps, which I completely hate because of that irritating loud sound (even when on vibrate) when turning off or on.
This is stock 2.1, not rooted phone. I only have launcherpro running, everything else is on default. I'm going to do a complete reset and see if the problem is gone, but I'm not too hopeful.
Guys, I had the same problem.. My new phone (Eclair, Not yet rooted) used to lag a lot whenever I end a call, It just freezes, So I did the following steps:
* Goto Settings-> applications-> Manage applications
* Tap the menu button (the first soft key button) and tap on "filter"
* Select the option "All" and now in the list of applications select Dialer
* tap the "clear data" button
* Go to home and Dialer -> recent and "clear List"
This solved my problem, Hope it solves yours as well.

As you can see, it is not only possible, but designed to be cleared. Basic stuff. Clearing data from the application manager was a daily routine on the old G1. Generally if something slows down, this is the first place to look.

Dears,
anytime I want to use GPS I need to switch it OFF and ON from notification bar, otherwise it doesn't work.
It's enough to open Maps to experience the issue: no GPS notification is shown on the bar, but after switching OFF and ON it loads position within a few seconds.
I usually see GPS notification blinking when there's no GPS app running, so I suspect an application is continuously using GPS, maybe stucking it after some time.
To troubleeshoot I've been doing a full wipe and I've been reflashing ROM; I started with a blank device (only SDcard has not been formatted) and I installed all apps one by one checking anytime the problem.
Well, I installed all apps without the problem to occour, but it started to accour again in some hours.
I don't know what to do anymore, because I'n not able to check which application is using GPS or any GPS related log information.
Can anybody help me?
Phone specs are in my signature.
Thanks and best regards

I used to have that issue ..the best thing is just shut down GPS after usage and switch it on when you want
also maybe try TopNTP it's a GPS fix which allows you to lock to GPS quickly it works by patching the GPS files on your system maybe it may help...just a suggestion

got an issue with the google nav app crashing on me.
a little background first though.
had this issue on the std rom, and tried flashing the current ARHD 31.3 rom in the hope of fixing it, it hasnt!
from a fresh boot, i can go into the google maps app, choose a location and then use the nav app go to there, no issues at all.
next time, i open maps, no issues at all, choose my location, and as soon as i hit start navigation, the nav screen opens, showing the next turn to make at the top, the voice is telling me where to go, but the main map screen, is flashing black and white.
it flashes like that for 5 or 10 seconds before crashing, the only way to restore navigation to a working state is to reboot the phone.
its getting rather annoying now, as i dont use the nav very often, i tend to need it occasionally, and its irritating to have to reboot the phone just to get the nav working.
as far as i am aware, the GPS works fine in everything else, (Maps, strava, gps test) it just seems to be nav thats causing the issue.
i've already tried clearing the cache from settings, apps, clear data, but i still get the same issue
any ideas on what might be causing this
cheers

Still flashing and crashing HTC One X+
Google maps to navigation is still flashing and crashing - even after turning off hardware overlays.
Works 1st time after reboot. If I swipe the app away from recent apps screen, then it starts failing.
3rd time I start it, working again, but I figure it's going to happen again.

I think I've found a kind of workaround to prevent this problem.
When you search the location you want to reach, and you are faced to the tile with these info:
8 min (3,1 km)
some info about trip
[MAP]
Start navigation
Instead of click on "Start navigation", click on "8 min (3,1 km)", then when the map is open, click on "Departure" and maps should not crash.
I hope the explanation is enough clear, I've translated texts from the italian app so I'm not sure if I've did it in the right way.

I was so annoyed with this...
I have had this problem for the last year using the stock, rooted AT&T Rom for my HTC One X + My wifes phone that is an HTC One X does not seem to do this. I found when I removed the maps update it worked well. When it updated it seemed to work a few times then the flickering and crashing started up again.
I tried the other suggestion above.
Finally I noted that when I clicked on start nav and as soon as it tried to open the map if I hit the power button and waited a second and turned it back on the image was stable. Sometimes I couldn't catch it before it crashed but if I did it would do the trick.
Why doesn't google fix this?
Same here. One X with rooted stock ROM.
When the flickering starts, i turn off the screen and then back on. This works for me in most situations. Still really annoying.
Hello, so i installed ArtMod 5.1 at first. Everything was allright. Some icons were old but that was okay. Then i updated to 5.2.1 and bugs came in.
1. In wifi settings i can't see active wifi connections. It shows me its connected. But i can't see those blue arcs.
2. Split screen with back button long press is messy. Its super hard to get it working. U have to let the back button go just the right millisecond. Othervise it will just flash up and disappear.
3. No battery power off animation or warning. When battery low the phone just goes black and thats it. It should give some warnings!!!
4. Ram usage. Im not sure if its a bug but i get only 700Mb free Ram. Something is eating it. With older version and other roms i got atleast 1Gb.
5. Battery drain. With no extra apps installed it takes battery like crazy max 1,5 h screen time wifi on, 3g off.
Everything else seems to work just fine. Ill keep this updated if i find out more.
Reason why im writing it here and not under the ArtMod topic is that nice XDA 10 posts thing.
Thanks, hoping for a reply soon.
6. The dual screen menu bar is offset. Or the button is just messed up. You have to. Press like 1,5 cm below the button for it to activate.
I have problem with Bluetooth.
When I press settings of some device in Bluetooth the application its force closed.

Is this actually a problem, on any ROM? I mean, does it cause any particular issues, rather than just seeing a number below 1GB? Two questions: 1) do you experience problems with your phone, and 2) is there an indication that they are caused by a low free RAM? My typical free RAM on VDT ROM is 700-800MB, give or take. My SGS5 (stock, but rooted and debloated) routinely goes below 600MB. Doesn't bother me, as everything still works perfectly fine. I don't run any memory cleaners, optimizers, etc., and rarely reboot my devices, unless I go into a flashing frenzy once in a while. Unless you know that this amount of free RAM is causing noticeable issues on your phone, why worry about it? Those 2GB of RAM are there to be used, so they are being used...

Dual window stuff is still broken.
I have found some other bugs in 5.2.2 release
1. Volume buttons doesn`t work when movie is buffering (You can`t volume down or up while it`s buffering)
2. In wheather aplication "localization" doesn`t work when the GPS is off (Rom or KK bug?). In Jelly Bean wheather aplication could
find my localization when only the mobile data was on. Mayby i can`t find some option?
3. Bluetooth still crashes when I try to get to settings of some device
4. When I deleting pictures in galery, by moving finger up, aplication asks me if I realy want to delete the picture. This is annoying.
5. Can we chose another aplication for navigate in the car mode?
Mayby You can tell me if this bugs are also in stock KK rom for E975?
