[Q] Battery Life - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that when using wifi the battery can last for ages, but once I move over to 3G the battery drains a lot quicker with 'Google Play Services' showing as the main culprit.
Does anyone know why this is (i noticed this on the Nexus 4 as well)
I am running stock LG 10a software (due apps I use I can't root the phone)

Had this issue too with my Galaxy S3. It went away when I got rid of Google Now and disabled Location History and Location Reporting. Also try clearing cache/data for Google Play Services.

DRM Protected Content Storage eating TONS of data and battery

So I've searched and searched and searched, and cannot find someone with the same issue as me. I am using GingerVillain ROM, and have recently noticed a TON of data being eaten up every day. I mean I normally would use less than 100MB per month, all of a sudden Im up to over 120MB a DAY. Doing nothing but email push! Also my battery life has just gone to nothing. Usually at around 85% as I leave work at night, now less than 40%.
Using 3G watchdog pro, Ive found out what is eating all the data. DRM protected content storage, download, download manager are all listed under an 85MB file that is downloaded every single day, sometimes twice a day. I'm assuming its an OTA update. I have frozen DRM protected content storage, no help. Frozen Download manager, well that sucks because the market won't work at all. Finally froze "download" and we'll see if that helps.
Anyone with any ideas what could be happening? Ive narrowed down what apps Ive recently installed, the only one that comes to mind is the Amazon MP3 store. I uninstalled that last week, but still getting this issue.
Any help would be AMAZING!

Same here
Just like the OP i've noticed that my data usage was unusually high in the month of September . At least 75-80 mb downloaded on a daily basis! I'm using Traffic Monitor and and it lists android.media:10014 as the culprit and under that header it lists Download Manager, Downloads, DRM Protected Storage and Media Storage. When I check task manager it usually shows DRM Protected Storage Media as active.
I'm actually starting to wonder if I downloaded some rogue app.
If someone can shed some light on this issue there is a big thank you in it for you!

Found out what's causing excessive data use, its Market trying to update itself. Only way I can stop this is to use Droidwall to block 'android.media' but then Market will not download apps.
The 70-80 meg one is the update from tmobile.

I never truly found out what was causing the data usage myself. The issue went away once I wiped and re-installed the latest MIUI ROM.

You could freeze market updater with titanium to keep the market from updating

I tried that, and also tried removing marketupdater.apk from system. Both methods stopped it from updating but android.media still downloads an obscene amount of data. Very strange.

The only way I found to stop this was to let market update itself and live with it. Its really not that bad when you've been using it for a while.

if this is updating apps you can set the auto update on playstore to update only on wifi... Or disable the auto update at all..

I know it's an old thread but this is what came up on google so i guess i'll post here in case someone have the same problem.

[Q] Maps killing battery

I'm a once a week user of Maps. So I need it, but often it doesn't even run between reboots. On ICS it seems to be killing 10% of my battery no matter what. I've tried turning off GPS. Any suggestions other than freezing it?
Are you signed into Latitude, maybe? That might be something to check.

Not signed into it. Not even signed up for it. I also disabled the reporting of location back to Google and using wifi for location. I should say I first rebooted and didn't start maps, then a day later tried no GPS/reboot/no maps, then no GPS/location reporting/wifi location/no maps.
I'm also seeing the same thing. After the screen, maps is using up to 20% of my battery. I haven't even used maps much since I got the phone.
Very strange. I remember on my Nexus S, Latitude would DESTROY the battery, but signing out of Latitude would fix it. It's not the most scientific thing, but I suggest signing into Latitude and then signing out of it.
Same here guys. Use it once a week, and it has 10% of the battery. Must be some sort of location service.
Maybe make sure the "Automatic caching" is set to Wi-Fi Only and not Wi-Fi or mobile networks?
There is a setting in stock browser to do with location. When I had this enabled I had this problem but once I disabled I no longer lose battery to maps so its worth investigating.

I noticed there is an update out today that mentions bug fixes on newer devices...
Maps update didn't seem to change anything. I also have the same problem on ICS galaxy nexus.
Same, but can't even freeze it!?
Same issue here, Maps and many processes are constantly running, I want to freeze it, but can't even use a simple command like 'pm disable <package_name>', it seems to have no effect!?
Don't really want to uninstall the app, but freezing won't work for me? Anyone manage to freeze it?
Same here. I cannot stop maps from running...
I've disabled the location options in the browser. Disabled all location items in settings. Disabled all locations settings in maps.
It keeps showing up in running apps!
Finally frozen!
I managed to freeze the app with System Tuner at last I could get rid of this. Obviously had to root the phone for that.

Battery drain by maps

Hi guys, I have this problem since last night. Maps are running in background and there is nothing I can do about it, restarted the phone, pulled the battery for couple of minutes, cleared maps cache and data, force stopped and nothing. Never had problem like this before with any of my phones. The phone is 8 days old and everytging is stock. Thanks

I had the same problem, I solved by disabling all of the location options.

Check if you have your location history enabled on your Google account. I do now, and it causes maps to request a location rather often. The battery life on this phone is good enough for me to leave it on though, I find it useful every now and then

This is not True. I went from losing 8% overnight to 2% just by ticking off the 3 GPS settings under location. Now when my screen is off, I rarely lose a %

it may be ur latitude posting updates of your location to google in the background
Now it is ok. I restarted the phone couple of times until it was not showing that the maps are running. Battery performance is ok now. Every location service is off, and I never opened the latitude! Thanks for everything guys!

Glad it's working for you! Yeah this whole time I never knew how much GPS use was actually draining the battery. I actually read an article online yesterday that talks about how GPS uses a crap load of battery. As of this morning, I only lost 1% overnight. I have 3 emails syncing, wifi on, rest of the syncs all on, google now off. No power saving apps installed. I know i'm saying this in all battery related thread but i'm super excited just like you and want to share the knowledge to all our Note 2 buddies ^_^
Battery drain <- Maps Always On <- Now <- 4.1.2
I noticed Maps was grabbing about 30% of my battery drain so I set out to figure out the problem. Conclusions are:
- 4.1.2 seems to have changed how location is used. I had Google Now on 4.1 and never had this heavy a battery drain.
- Maps was constantly running with TWO services
- Maps did not have to be open or visible, and reboot had both come back even after stopping services
- Disabling "Google Apps Location Access" solved the drain but this made it basically impossible to use Google Maps, because
- Maps would not use GPS without "Google Apps Location Access" turned on
I considered uninstalling Google Maps but realized that:
> All my favourite locations are on Google Maps
> Other mapping software also seemed to want all sorts of invasive rights, which I was not going to grant
So I:
* enabled GPS
* disabled Google Apps Location Access
* uninstalled Google Search (aka Now) using a 3rd party tool (rooted)
* looked for a new search software (let's face it this isn't really necessary is it?)
* found and installed Yahoo Search which I must say seems faster, more interesting and does not require unwanted access to my private data
Battery drain is back to normal, I have ful search and maps and GPS use.

Let's face it. Google is king of search. And that has spread to other Google uses, maps being a major player. I think Google needs to solve this by fine tuning how and when maps and/or GPS is used. Another big thing is Google needs to fine tune how our phones retrieve data in general. Apple has and is still working on it. Intel is fine tuning it majorly and you can see some of the results on anandtech where x86 and ARM SOC's are compared on windows RT. Randomly retrieving data for all data and apps is a nightmare. It would be nice if we could fine tune our syncs and data retrieval in set intervals or let the OS have a smart system where if x app needs this and it see 3 or 4 or whatever x apps need to retrieve data in the next 20 mins it will retrieve all in one fell swoop causing less wake locks and more idle/sleep time.

I had a similar battery drain problem... ~8% per hour when screen was OFF! Finally solved it by turning off Google Now AND the Location Service it used. I guess the problem is due to location history collection performed for Google Now.

Guys first thing first about battery draining is your mobile network not configure properly.. if its configure the network will not awaken your phone it just need a second to runing in background.. just realize it after I install configuration message from provider.. I drain 1% all over night.. and get 2day standby battery with medium usage.. 10 hours screen.. and leaving the phone with charging all night is weaken your battery.. first time I forget to unplug and everything change.. battery drain 5% after sleep 6hours..and only last for 1 day with medium usage.. 6hours on screen now I dont know how to make it back like it was.. using note for 3weeks anyone knows how to increase batt life without changing rom or kernel ?? Im still runing stock 4.1.1

Note II lags while updating apps from Play Store

Hello Guys,
I have been having this problem from quite some time now (And frankly I don't remember since when).. Whenever my apps are getting updates from the Google Play Store, my mobile becomes painfully slow and lags majorly. It like as if you are using Jellybean on a device meant for Android Eclairs! My system is neither rooted not modified. I had the same problem even on 4.1.2 so it is not the firmware issue. My Note II has Kaspersky antivirus installed which checks every new and updated app. I thought it may be because of this so I uninstalled the app but still no effect Toggling Power Saving Mode On/Off does not make any difference either
I have no idea what is causing it and it is really troublesome.. I have A LOTT of apps and sometimes it updates almost 10 12 apps in a go which is really irritating with the lag!!
Have have chosen any option that is causing this?? Or any app??
Please help me with this
Cheers!
I have the same issue and I thought it started with update to Android 4.3, but it is probably due to update of Play Store application, now that you say you also had this problem on 4.1.2... Everything is smooth (ROM) except when I'm updating apps, it freezes so much I'm unable to do anything and I remember I used to run "update all" and then go back to Launcher and did other things while update run in the back... now it is slowing down the system... I wondered if it is a problem with XPrivacy module, but probably not...
Has anybody got any help on this?

Google Play Services Battery

Ive been on multiple ROMS and all of them have TERRIBLE battery drain issues with google play services. Currently im on ICE 3.1.1 but have used ARHD, Maximus, and LeDroid, all of them had this issue. i dont think its ROM replated but maybe some settings? im using greenify for ALL apps i installed including the google app, google play games, maps, street view, gmail, etc. if its not a system app, i greenify it. currently my phone has been on for 3.5 hrs and im at 85% with 30mins SOT and 37% screen off usage is due to google services. keep awake time is at 30mins. ive been on 4G most of the time with wifi turned off. what settings could this be related to? the battery dies so quickly when screen is off! just letting it sit idle for 10 mins dropped it 1-2%!
Using 4g usually uses more battery than WiFi so probably use WiFi when available. However that's still bad. Everyone has Google play services that has a US Android phone so everyone would have the issue if it were purely that.

As far as I know it's a more or less common issue that has already existed on my old One S. Maybe it's even older. (I'm not even sure whether it's a HTC specific issue.) If I remember correctly a real solution was never found. Sometimes a Play Services update fixes the problem, sometimes flashing a RUU and sometimes a clean flash of the rom you are using. (Luckily I never had to face this problem.)
These are what causing my wakelocks. The top 3. Anyone know what would cause those?
