Coming from Nexus 5 - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got D855 for second day now and I'm slightly disappointed with it, because it's slow and not as fluid as oldie Nexus 5.
I have it rooted, disabled all animation, uninstalled a bunch of bloatware, it feels faster but still behind a stock Nexus 5.
Although, what I like about it is its screen. It is amazing. Only if I knew how to disable a very annoying brightness due to overheating "feature".

Did you try it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790759
I am coming from N5 too. I hope those slowdowns will not be so annoying for me.
I would also like to see some more Nexusers upgrading to G3.

Yes, tried that today and it didnt work with D855.
Overheating governor still kicks in and reduces the brightness.

I would be greatful if you could write some more about your experience. Where does it disappoints you exacly? Apps open slowly? Animations are loosing frames everywhere?

Basically UI is not as fluid as a stock Nexus 5.
With animation scale set to 1x (default) there is always a lag between a touch on screen and the action, regardless whether you open app or swipe screens or open settings. It feels better when after I've disabled all animation scales, but small lags and tiny freezes still occur. On nexus 5 with animation scales set to default 1x, everything feels extremely fluid.
I'm running D855 with gel launcher and I removed almost all LG bloatware.

I'm coming from a N5 and I probably agree with you. The build quality and screen is better on the G3 than the N5 but with animations on I think the S801 has trouble drawing them smoothly during transition at QHD. I'm running Nova launcher with faster than lightning animation and all animations off in developer options and the phone feels much better probably on par with N5. It could just be that the G3 needs a debloated optimized AOSP ROM or it could be the S801 can't handle the QHD display.
Edit:- I've also installed XUImod with xposed and set the scrolling friction very low and adjusted various parameters in there, this also helps a lot and its much smoother.

Slightly better for me usually when I'm hitting around 5% on N5 I'm sitting at 15-20 on G3.

Can't really compare properly due to the amount of custom Kernels on the N5 (I had one previously also) - I got mental battery out of C|3keners kernels on my N5. Give it a month or so and watch the dev fly on this bad boy. For now, it's a mixed bag on the G3 - tbh it's a fairly decent battery for what you get. I average around 18-20 hours with moderate-heavy use currently.

I'm using a D855 and used the patch. Didn't get any overheating notifications since then (though I could simply not have pushed my device to that point) or are you saying that the patch removes the notifications but the governor still kicks in in the background?

Nope, both notification and the governor kick in.
But, a long story short, I've disabled it via 3845*#855* menu and the problem is gone.

Has anyone else lowered the transition animation scale?

I think kicking it down a notch from 1 (or was it 1.5 default) to .5 makes things feel snappier and I don't really notice a big visual difference. Any negatives to lowering it?
I actually set mine to 0 (both window and animation scale), the difference is noticeable. You lose the smoother transition effects, but everything feels snappier and apps appear instantly on the screen.

With those settings you loose the crt animation as well.
That's always been the case... Even running a cm rom.

You can leave the window one at 1, and change the other one to 0.5 or even 0. If you set them to 10x you can see exactly what each one changes (Its funny to see it go so slowly lol)
On another note, I just found the 'iPhone mode' - Background process = No background processes. I imagine this would cause alot of problems, but i wonder what it would do to standby battery life.....
EDIT: Just charged to 100%, set No Background Processes... lets see what happens to the battery for the next 3 hours.
One of the reasons I want Android back is because I can COMPLETELY disable animations. I hate animations, they make everything slow.

It seems standby time increases a lot.. it went down from 100% to 95% in 2 hours. Doing the maths thats 40 hours standby.
Also I find on my phone, under normal settings it drops to 90% in an hour, and then a couple of % an hour after that. (This is probably due to inaccurate battery calibration stats). So 2 hours for the first 5% is pretty good.
Having said that, you can see a small delay before every app launches. Its obviously loading it into memory every time rather than caching to memory.

Just so you know and everybody, consider the 5% inaccurate. With previous phones including the gnex, the phone basically at 100% when it hits 95%. It trickle charges the last 5% and when it hits 98-100% it stops. Also, use batterycalibration app and see how wild your mv drops down when you unplug from charger when above 95%. When 95% or below and you unplug the mv drop is less dramatic. Anyways, i get great battery life but sometimes my phone drops to 95% in 20 mins or sometimes as much as 2 hours. After 95% the voltage drop is a looooot more consistent.

Haha, I'll probably get flamed for this, but I intentionally set my GN to remove that CRT screen off animation because I got tired of it after about a week.

I leave it on because people seem to like it
I just set that, it seems to me that it only affects cached apps, not running apps. When I disable it, I can still see running apps as usual but no cached apps exit anymore.
So I doubt it will improve battery a lot. Maybe only free more ram by not caching recent apps.

Do you still get notifications when you limit the background process? have you still left this option on or reverted back to Standard Limit? Thanks
I was playing around with the no background processes thing also. Had much higher ram free after doing it. I set it back to standard though. I'm pretty sure Google knows what is best for the os.

Performance issues

Is anyone else experiencing issues with UI performance? A large amount of the apps I use appear to suffer massive frame rate drops when scrolling and I don't understand it at all. Considering the power behind the phone it makes no sense to me and the only thing I can think of is lack of optimisation. The best example I can give is when there are images on screen it feels like the frame rate drops as scrolling isn't as smooth then when it's just text it's buttery smooth. It isn't just images causing it though so I don't know if it's the apps, the phone, the ROM or a combination.
It wouldn't be so bad if the battery life was stellar but that too is pretty bad. With the same use I sometimes get down to 50% in around 8 hours (very light use) then another day it'll be over 15 hours.
Do I have a possible dodgy phone or are these common issues? I'm stuck on an old ROM (carrier branding, yay!) with no updates showing.

Hi Mate im currently running the htc one x but havent come across some of the issues your mentioning. When you say the framerate drops is this more when looking at websites etc as the browser re-alligns the text to your screen. Im running mine on stock to at the moment with vodafone branding if that helps at all.
Heya. I'm running stock too (T-Mobile) and the frame rate thing is an odd one. It doesn't happen in all the apps I use but enough that I noticed it. I'll have to keep a list of the apps because I can't find one doing it right now. The best comparison I can make is with PC games where you have nice and smooth gameplay but then a lot of effects happen and if your graphics card isn't good enough the frame rate drops and you notice a slight stuttering effect.
Anyway, you say you haven't got it on stock Vodafone so it's possible / highly likely that it's apps not set to use hardware acceleration.
One other thing I've just been reminded of is photos. Occasionally when I look back at photos in a grid the bottom of them will have visual artifacts. I'm trying to attach a grid of my photos, some are more noticeable than others like the white chunk on one in the middle of the grid. It doesn't affect the actual photo but when I first saw it the first thing I thought of was my Desire HD with current camera hacks to run ICS. As it doesn't do anything to the image it isn't too serious but not a good thing to see.

very GOOD tutorial for HTC ONE X BATTERY

I recommend you this tutorial because ...it works very good and with NOVA our phone is much smoother..
try it an leave a review here !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ0GpvmPm7A&feature=related
I must say, the video is really nice: it's good made, with pleasant speaker and, the best, it delivers really nice tips.
I was always interested, if nova or apex would consume less energy but no one made those test...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
sense uses more battery because the 3d cube animation..but with NOVA u can use simple but very pleasant for eyes the TABLET animation
I think this video might be applicable to the 1.xx roms but since the 2.xx series battery life is terrific, I can get 2+ days on mostly stock settings anyway heelsandtech is/ nice to watch for other reasons...
nice info, useless in most cases but nice to know.
in the end who bought the one-X to keep everything disabled and use a black wallpaper. that's why we've got a companion core and why juice defended exists.
expected it to cover more things to prevent.
app's that stop deep sleep.
situational awareness and such.
wile at work i'm not allowed to take my phone to my workplace so i leave it in a locker, wile in the locker it has no reception but frantically searching for some keeping it out of deep sleep and actively using the CPU draining up to 40% in 2 hours time. enabling airplane mode stops the phone from looking for reception and restores it's normal drain. information like that could be handy to some more so then use a black wallpaper and turn off everything u don't need that very second.
not all things that she says are OK (like the black wallpaper)
but some of them are VERY good to know ..disabling the 3g saves alot of battery.
In fact, she didn`t said, you should use a black wallpaper. She just mentioned, that it consumpts less battery.
The best in this video is, that she reviewed two times what she said, and gave tips to optimise battery. The tutorial is great for begginers, if it would pinned here in forum, 30% of threads wouldn`t be created ("omfg, my battery dies quickly, heeeeeelp")
I don`t really think, sense drains more just because of 3d animation, but because of screwed up code (how you can explain, that app drawer lagged on ics all the time on 4-core beast?). On jb, rosie became fast, but i can imagine, there are still many sh*t inside the code, so it drains more battery. The problem is, sense was ported over 5 times already, it is just time to write it from scratch, lighter and fresher, it would make it more competetive.
I`ll check tommorow in field conditions, how it will perfom with nova prime...
One more statement about the vid: as she mentioned, the video is not only for One x, but for all Android (especially for htcs). after 2.17 update, HOX does perfom well in terms of battery in comparisment to other Androids, but all of them sux hard (except of motorazr maxx and sgNote, but only because of monster battery size). iPhone blows away every android phone in battery life by two times (i could compare iPhone4 with motorola atrix and sgs2 with 4s).
So, all in all, the video is the best among anything I`ve seen before. I barly give props to such videos, but this time I do

Black wallpapers only consume less energy on AMOLED/OLED panels. LCD screens use a backlight that is the same intensity regardless of wallpaper colour.

It's not due black or white, it's due to simplicity : cpu needs more power calculating a 1mb picture as a wallpaper, than black wallpaper.
Also, you cannot say this, if you didn't tested it. The lcd3 Technology (in fact it's upgraded ips texhnology) is to complicated go say for sure

I'm considering returning my s5 for the G3

I have a few questions about this phone. So far the s5 has been impressive as far as camera, battery life, speed, etc. The one problem? Its got a locked bootloader and there is no sign of it being unlocked any time soon.
The G3 has unlock method and several ROMS and development which is important to me(previous phone was s3 with plenty of ROMS).
So, does the g3 have good battery life and features similar to the s5?
Not much development,ok battery life with normal usage.Features wise doesn't have gestures, heart rate sensor, have multi windows, quick case circle, knock code.Probably best for you will be nexus 6
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hopes this helps
I have had the S5, HTC One M8 and Now the G3, in my opinion it is a better phone that the two mentioned before, battery life is solid and improved through moding, good camera, I would definitely choose this one, but I would take the 3 GB variant because the additional ram goes a long way. Everything works well the way it should be no gimmicks like the S5 and a much louder speaker than the M8.
Ive used many flagships over the last year (s5, note 3, htc m8, xperia z1, lg g2,); The G3 is my favorite phone so far. Minor issues are the dim backlight, mediocre battery, oversharpening. But overall, best phone.
If I could have any phone now however, Id choose the Note 4.
I had the S5 for a few months. What surprised me was that I was not impressed with it at all. It is not a terrible phone. It was okay. My issues...For one, despite the claims, I found the battery life and overall experience with the G2 to be MUCH better. The G2 was much smoother. So I was disappointed with the GS5 coming from the G2.
I was intrigued by the G3, but was worried about that display and 801 processor, dimmer display, battery life etc. However, I couldn't stomach the GS5 anymore and I took the plunge and after rooting the G3, I find the battery life to be better than the GS5 . The G3 is better for making phone calls (better audio quality), and has better speakers. There are some lags. But I think those aren't so bad in general and can be improved with a different launcher or Rom (if you are into that). The camera is about the same (the GS5 takes better daylight photos). I have't really played with the modded cameras available for the G3, so I cannot comment on that.
Definitely I would go for the G3. For me, the G3 has been a better experience.
I have both phones SG5 and G3. Love G3, everything stock and still better for customising than GS5. If only battery life could be better on G3.
I heavily use SG5 and battery will last all day on G3 it goes to 50 % within 6 hrs.
Can't decide too which to keep.
My wife got the S5 about a week ago, and I'd been on the fence for a while, most because I'd been spooked by all the posts & threads about G3 glitches. I got my G3 today, and I gotta tell ya, I don't see ANY of the glitches I've been reading about. No overheating, no force closes, no over-sharpening... nothing. It's only been a day, but I've been pushing this thing all day.
I am going to have to spend some time working on the battery life, because it does go through it fast. But, I'm rooted on Barrin, so I'm hoping I have some options to disable some of the hogs. I typically go from home to my car to work and back where I always have a power source, but there will be times when I'm not. That will be rough, unless I find effective adjustments.
I went from the S4 to the G3. Not quite the same as you, but similar.
Here's what I've found in the 4 months of using the G3.
My list of cons looks a little big, But they are small things in comparison to the Pros, I just wanted to share my experience.
I'm currently a proud owner of the G3 and despite running everything stock due to lack of development for my model (D852), The G3 at stock is still better than most other heavily modified phones.
G3 Pros:
~ Best form factor in any phone bar none, The screen size is perfect for the size of the phones body, Very compact for a 5.5" screen and 1 handed use has never been an issue for me on this phone. (My hands are about medium size) (This is my main reason for keeping this phone.)
~ The bezels on this phone are the smallest nicesest looking bezels on any phone out there. (Without these super skinny bezels we wouldn't be able to get this small form factor with this huge of a screen, Looking really good is just a bonus hahaha.)
~ This phone is probly the nicest looking phone on the market, looking at it from the front with the screen off. (with the exception of the grey bottom bezel, The grey bezel kinda wrecks it's super sleek sexy look. But it still looks really good)
~ Super sexy UI, Especially the notification menu on this phone is THE NICEST looking of any android device in my opinion. (Which is kinda funny considering the G2 had the UGLIEST notification menu out of any android device I've ever seen.)
~ 1440x2560p resolution. <--- This is the first resolution that I've ever seen where I feel it's a retina display (Everyones eyes are different), To my eyes this resolution is a REAL retina display, Meaning my eyes can't see pixels anymore, After owning a 1440p phone i can totally notice 1080p isn't even retina Although some would disagree. Let's not even talk about what steve jobs thought was a retina display hahaha, Your eyes would melt out of your head seeing those resolutions now days. Although I could see how an iphone can be a retina display... at 5 feet away...
~ You can install custom roms & kernels via bump method.
~ Extremely good standby battery life on my Canadian model (D852). (5h20m per 1% battery drain, From what I've seen most US models seem to only get 1-3 hours per 1% depending on the circumstances, But as you can see it can be a lot higher depending on the circumstances.)
~ My first battery cycle on my G3 was an impressive 13.5 DAYS with just under 3 hours SOT on LTE 100% of the time. (100% of the SOT was texting)
~ Screen on time is really good, At stock on my G3 I get a slightly less SOT than my S4 that was heavily modified towards power savings
(Using auto brightness with slider at 0 & optimized options on stock I average around 11.5h screen on time (most of my SOT is texting) over the course of 3-4 days on most cycles on my G3, If I don't do any webbrowsing.) (The webbrowser on this phone DESTROYS my battery life)
~ I left my screen on for a full cycle without touching it just to see what kind of screen time the device is capable of and it went for 15h35m screen on time, autobrightness was on with slider at 0. I also tried the same test with the only custom kernel that exists for my model (D852) and my battery life only did 10 hours unused vs the (11.5h avg) I get WITH usage on the stock kernel. Lack of kernel support on the D852 does make me consider trying another phone.
(It also might be fair to say that most other users average 3-5h SOT, which I don't even know how is possible to get so little unless you were playing a game the whole time with max brightness, but it's reality for some. But just know you can EASILY exceed 3-5h SOT)
G3 Cons:
~ If I turn my brightness above 50-60% I can start to see little squares on the screen, I usually run really low brightness and just noticed this a couple days ago. (I will likely RMA because of this.)
~ The glass on this phone is prone to coming slightly lose from the screen around the edges, Just enough to make the glass stick up higher than the actual bezel itself, Just like the S4's screen. (This of all things pisses me off more than anything) (I exchanged my first G3 back to the carrier for a new G3 because I had this issue & my phone was really hot, The second device was solid until I noticed the little squares on my screen as mentioned above.)
~ Can't fully disable touchboost. (This phone is clocked at 1.5ghz on 2 cores when your finger is touching the screen because of touchboost, So just to swipe your screen consumes ALOT of power and causes lags due to cpu ramping up on the stock cpu governor) (Even with a custom kernel I was only able to disable touchboost on 3 of 4 cores on my D852, So even when I'm texting on my phone my cpu has to hit 1.5ghz on 1 core to press a letter on my keyboard which is BS, And if on stock kernel it ramps up 2 cores to 1.5ghz just to type a letter) (touchboost is one of the biggest causes for keyboard lag & battery drain when the screen is on.)
~ Signal reception is not near as good as my S4, My S4 was always full bars, This phone is lucky to have half my bars. (Calls are nice and clear without any background noise, Probly the best I've ever heard on any cellphone so far but the data connection is a little flakey)
~ The top bezel is very uncomfortable on my ear when making a phone call. (I always find myself using speaker phone a lot because of this) (Despite the S4 having the same bezel design, The S4 didn't hurt my ear)
~ I have a buzzing sound in my left headphone IF there is no audio playing AND the cpu is under load.
~ This phone isn't as responsive as my S4 was. (One of the reasons for this is the combination of the stock cpu governor + touchboost, The stock cpu governor doesn't ramp fast enough for the touchboost causing a noticeable delay everytime you touch your finger to the screen while using the stock cpu governor, Especially noticeable when scrolling web pages on the web browser.)
~ Web browsing is alot slower than my S4 was, Sometimes I even get "Connection timed out" while trying to load web pages on WiFi, LTE, HSPA+, HSPA. All networks appear to be affected. (Using stock browser, Haven't tried other browsers yet)
~ The webbrowsing on the stock browser drains battery REALLY fast. (But it's the only 2k browser, Atleast it was the last time I checked) (I believe LG's sandbox security is to blame for the stock webbrowsers bad battery life/bad performance)
~ Very little development on lots of models, It seems unless you get a D855 you probly won't get much development. As of right now for my Canadian D852 there is only 1 custom rom and only 1 custom kernel in existence for my model. (Both of which are the same or worse in battery life than stock)
~ If your really into battery savings and are stuck with a crappy model like my D852 model the only custom kernel for my model is the Rin kernel and that makes my phone die FASTER than stock kernel even when it's completely tweaked for max battery life. Completely tweaked Rin kernel gives me same battery life as stock kernel but with TONS of stutters & lags (Stock rom + stock kernel gives me the best battery life & performance on my D852)
~ Phone is hot out of the box without disabling a bunch of things.
~ Color is washed out. (Especially the color red, Red looks like orange that is trying to be red, like it's almost red, but still orangeish.)
~ Color is REALLY washed out at high brightness. (At really high brightness black isn't even black, it's grey)
~ (I don't know if you would call this last one a con, But it sure is disappointing none the less) All the space on the inside of the phone to the left and right of the battery is hollow plastic that coulda been used for a much larger battery, But because this phone was made in korea it was designed this way to accommodate the TV antenna on the Korean version, In the non Korean version it's just air filling this same space.
Excellent
I go for all the latest phones. Have had the s4 m7/8 z2. This is my first lg and am very impressed by it. Easy to use, excellent display. Really cant fault it. Get good battery life and am constantly using it. At the end of the day choice is yours but i dont think you'll be disappointed.

Need phone asap

Hey everybody,
Long time Android user here as well as strictly nexus owner. My Nexus 6 took a a dump the other day and I need a phone pretty quickly. I don't have a ton to spend and I'm leaning towards the 5x. I know there were plenty of performance issues reported by a fair amount of people especially relating to the camera. I'm a ferret owner and I enjoy getting some great shots. My N6 was pathetic most times at getting anything decent (even with them sitting still). Will I regret this camera (speed, not quality) or is the performance improved post 6.0.1 update? Does the camera open up properly by double tapping the power button or does it freeze all the time like on my N6? Also, how bad is the loudspeaker? Have the updates for the 5x done as good of a job as they were supposed to in the lag/jank department?
Bonus: how is it on the N preview?
Thanks in advance guys. I always appreciate you all taking time out to help

I've had no performance issues with mine. I believe 2 of the 7 or so monthly OTA updates did address performance issues for those who were though.
My camera always launches with a double tap and it's quick and snappy. HDR+ pictures come out considerably quicker than my N5 though disabling HDR+ would still be recommended for moving subjects such as a fast critter.
I haven't had any issues with RAM personally but if you are the type of person that likes to load up lots of background services it's possible the 2GB of RAM could become a limitation.
For the $200 Google Fi deal there is nothing that can compete. At $400 there are options though the 5x still competes well with its top notch camera and screen quality.
Well that's good to hear. I don't download a ton of apps or anything like that. Lots of pictures, podcasts, and some surfing of the web. I just cant stand how bad my n6 handles getting a QUICK picture. It's literally 10 secs or more sometimes to load the app. It has not aged well compared to my n5

Yea, I first had mine full stock for a week. Battery lasted for about 3-4 hours of SoT with Data On; 4h with WiFi. Performance was impecable, really fast and snappy. Never had problems with camera like other people had. Yes it takes 2 seconds to do a HDR+ pic, but I cant see the difference between normal and HDR+, so I leave it off mostly so its really fast. Then, I rooted my phone as the Type C cable that I ordered arrived. ( You should order a USB C to USB-A converter, because it doesnt come with the phone, and that is the most stupidest thing ever). After the root, 8-12 h of SoT, buttery smooth performance with Interactive Governor tweaks on PureNexus with Phasma Kernel. So yea, it's freaking awesome so far.
The only con for me personally is that it gets really hot and really fast if the screen is on. If you skype, it's so hot sometimes that my fingers sweat, and If i put the screen on my ear, it almost stings. Resting it for a few seconds turns it back to 29C ,but yea. This phone is just so hot sometimes. Havent tried streaming, but youtube doesnt make it that hot, its arround 39 wich is normal. If you dont root, and your phone gets hotter than 44-46C, your big cpu core will throttle and you will feel an impact in performance(but that really rarely happens, only if you multitask like me)
Overall, 9/10 phone, worth the money. I switched from my broken M7, and did the right choice
Thank you very much. Really appreciate the feedback
