Nova Launcher Dock background on G3, how it looks? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone who is using Nova Launcher (or any other with dock customization ability) advise whether onscreen buttons make the customizable dock totally useless or not?
Here is how it looks on my htc oneX at the moment. I want to use a similar layout on my G3 (soon to arrive) without a third party launcher if it works.
Edit: should have been "with"

What do you mean by on screen buttons? The UI buttons? (back, home, recent). Nova is a third part launcher.. so without it you'd get a different look. but the soft keys/buttons have no affect on the rest of the UI.

Yes, I meant the UI buttons. And, yes you're right, what I have said at the end was wrong; I will probably use Nova Launcher on G3 and wondering where the dock background will be located, behind or above the UI buttons?

Yea, if your not used to them, just imagine them as physical buttons, ive only used phones with soft keys for years now. The dock will be located just above the buttons. It wont change any functionality. You'll find some apps (gallery etc) make use of the full screen by hiding the buttons, which will appear again when you flick up from the bottom or touch the screen. The UI will always adapt to the presence of the soft key buttons accordingly.

Here you go, nova with soft keys. I've just come from a one x and this phone is great

Thanks mate. Can you take another background with a dock background image please.
Also can you comment on battery life and screen legibility under daylight conditions as comparison between OneX and the G3.

Bloody XDA app, I've wrote this post 4 times now because it keeps crashing while I write it
Here is the pick with dock. Haven't messed around changing the nav bar background to match so looks a bit odd.
Battery life is definitely better than the one X, only my first full charge today so it will only improve. Got no figures or anything because I've been rebooting my phone a lot, rooting it and installing xposed. The battery is never going to be amazing but reckon it should be about 5 hrs screen on time. If/ when custom kernels come out then who knows but definitely better than one X. As for the screen I have no probs with legibility, yes it's a bit reflective but next to my One X it's an improvement. All in all very happy with my g3. Was a bit worried about the size but doesn't feel any bigger than the one x and looks and feels good.

Thanks again. It seems back of the soft nav buttons is not accessible for Nova.
Reg OneX comparison, surely it will be a major upgrade (I will pick my G3 up on monday) considering with 4G, 3 Gb ram, qHD display, OIS camera, real multitasking etc etc. However, think I will miss the beats audio (that makes sense especially when connected to car stereo) and htc's stock flashlight app

I think he is talking about, for instance leaving a few pixels show the same thing for along time with the result being that those pixels "stick" to the showing the "thing".
Hope this helps...
BTW i havent had this problem yet.....

I have the white status bar on the top. I left my screen on for about 10-15mins. I rebooted my phone and on the white HTC logo boot screen, I can see some of the white status bar but its very faded. This was a big problem with plasma TV's also.

Brightness loss on AMOLED
I have found reduced brightness on my desire after trying to run the battery flat by setting the screen to fully white display, and at full brightness. It ran for hours before it went flat.
I have two friends with Desires, and when comparing my phone with theirs at full brightness, the lesser light emitted by mine is noticeable. All three phones were set to manual and full brightness for comparison.
Organic material degradation is one downside to OLED screens, but i always thought it took around >50,000 hours to reach half brightness.
Maybe the 'hours on'/'brightness loss' curve is not linear.....?
I was told that the reason the HTC Sense UI is black is to avoid such a problem
Use a black theme, it consumes less power and you won't get the burn-in effect.
I too hv noticed that. But they disappear in short, so i see no matter to complain.

so its not really Burn-In then more IR (Image Rentention), which disappears after the handset is switched off?
Not noticed anything so far on mine.

I didn't notice anything like that.

Well I did, and I found a solution, program name is jscreenfix for andorid I run it like a half an hour, and he fix it all, no shadows now everything is perfect.

Screen burn in

Does anyone else get a little screen burn in on their incredible? Or should I bring mine in under warranty? Never noticed it before, but it does it whether I am running stock unrooted or rooted with a different Rom. I have never overclocked or messed with voltages. It's not bad yet just noticeable at times. SLCD screen.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
My AMOLED has slightly-yellowish bands across the screen when I'm looking at white screens or light-colored screens. I assume its screen burn-in. It doesn't bother me because it only shows up on light-colored screens. I run mostly dark wallpapers or black if I can just because I love the pitch black dark background that AMOLED makes as opposed to my brother's SLCD Incredible. Might buy a replacement screen later on down the road if I can find a replacement AMOLED screen for it. In the meantime, its all good.
I get it too sometimes, I have an SLCD. For some reason, it was only back when those 2.3.5 Sense 3.0 roms from the Desire were being ported. The icons at the very top on the status bar would get burned into it, and wouldn't go away for a while. Like, say I turned off Wifi, the prominent icon would go away, but then there would be a sort of dim replica of it, still in the exact spot where it was, and it would just linger there forever. Also got these on some Sense 2.1 roms, while messing with some skins for them. I have no idea what causes this.
Mine has burn in where the time is in the status bar. But since it is always there...no biggie

This wasn't actually screen burn in. It had something to do with the skins/themes and having to be ported to the Incredible. Happened to everyone.
If you have a slcd then the correct term for what you are most likely seeing is image retention or image persistence. Just turn your screen off for a bit to relax the crystals.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Apparently my phone decided one day that it'd be a great idea to never turn off the screen, so after around 40 minutes I took my phone out of my pocket to see Google Voice sitting there. Turned it off and it was still bad, but it's gone away after a while.
You can't fix it. Unlike displays with a common light source, the brightness of each OLED pixel fades depending on the content displayed. The varied lifespan of the organic dyes can cause a discrepancy between red, green, and blue intensity. This leads to image persistence, also known as burn-in

Well, I am sorry. That was the only situation that I have seen what appeared to be burn in. When I quite using those custom skins, the issue stopped, and it only happened with the status bar icons. And if you look back to my original reply, it was specifically responding to you about the status bar "burn in" issue you brought up on sense roms, not about issues you may have had with aosp or keyboards. I am using amoled screen.

What would you like to see on the Note 3?

I know the Note 3 won't come out till mid to late next year. What improvement or features would you like to see? Let me start.
1.8-2.0 ghz quad core processor, 3500+ mah battery, 5.5" screen is big enough, output projector, 3gb ram, 3-5mp front camera, better camera lens, android 4.2-5.0, 1080p display, super loud speaker with no distortion.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
Teleportation, Invisibility cloaking and time traveling features.
but seriously, the Note 2 just got here and I am finding cool new features that I love. I would want more s-pen capability, more multi tasking features, of course latest version of Android, Screen recording as shown on the ad, maybe a better design of the phone. So far I love the phone and spend more time on it than on a computer.
What I would like to see from the Note 3? Since the Note 2 just came out I couldn't say off hand. The one thing I would love to see from Samsung is a product delivered to every market with the same features.
Wireless charging through all models for starters. As for the rest it would depend on what is out for the tech behind the third. I do think it is already big enough, so lets hope they don't try to push the size up anymore.
Bluetooth headset S pen which charges when put back into the slot.
1080P display
Keep everything the same relative to other future devices.
Increase the screen to make it king of the hill.
-In cell
-Response time
-ppi
-etc...
- Six-Core Processor
- 4 GB RAM
- 1080HD Screen
- MAKING UPDATES AVAILABLE RIGHT AWAY! NO BLOATWARE.
Also a 6" screen.

"50" inch projector
I think the screen shouldnt get much bigger, maybe they could take out a bit from the size and top bezel, but I already accidentally hit onscreen buttons when trying to hit back or menu. That or maybe just go to virtual keys and keep the phone the same size but almost all screen. It's hard to say though.
1080 screen because why not? Also I would like the multitasking to go up, primarily maybe have a dock mode that pretty much turns the phone into a chrome book, so then something like the laptop dock would make more sense. That way I could bring around a really light laptop (as it would pretty much be a keyboard, screen, battery, and connector) that I could hook my phone up to and get a 1080 display that's 12+", and I also wouldn't have to worry about which files were located where (minus google drive, which I mostly use, so it's not a big deal really).
Umm, increased battery life, and increased internal memory. Pretty much, let me replace my work laptop, even if I still need a gaming laptop for some windows only games. Also maybe something that would let me run desktop linux software... but that again is up to google more than samsung really.
Every Note 3 released with the same hardware features.
Every Note 3 with wireless charging.
5.75 to 6" screen.
The option to show signal strength in dbm on the notification bar, this is incredibly useful when using the phone as a wireless hot spot.
Cleary it will be slightly better than the S4 but I love it thus far . IF we make it passed 12/21/12 I wont upgrade unti the Note 4

1080 Res would be nice. Bigger battery. Remove the home and touch buttons and add buttons like the Nexus devices. Wireless charging out the box. Some extra buttons on the s pen to launch apps or quicker access to gestures. I would like to see Touchwiz taking advantage of the larger screen. Still running a 4 x 4 grid on a 5.5 screen makes no sense. Official desk and car docks that support cases and have wireless charging ability. More crafty and cleaver official accessories.
I would like to see dual micro sdcard slot. Our phones are becoming our laptops. Slap in two 64gb cards or by than, when the normal is 128gb. Having two 128gb cards would be outstanding.

That does remind me though. Something hardware related and something not. Hardware related, perhaps an eraser on the s-pen you get with the device. Secondly, more software support for creative/drawing-type apps, but that will come in time with more adoption of s-pen devices.

1080P is necessary - I can see the pixels when I remove my glasses. Also virtual function keys coz pushing home with the s-pen is interrupting. Can't think anymore, vanilla android or no bloatware is contradicting the company's business strategy so not realistic

Why? htc choice of parts and build of android?

I've recently aquired a Samsung galaxy 3 so have been able to do comparing es with the hox
First of battery
The galaxy lasts a lot longer than the hox plus it charges much much quicker over Usb and mains. Is this due to the type of battery or the charging loop parts on the hox?
Second
Bluetooth
The connection to my blue tooth headphones drops out every few seconds the catches up. I I think this fault with htc blue tooth I say this as I gad the same issue with the desire hd and the samsung if flawless.
Third
Wifi
The wifi signal holds much better and is stronger in the s3
4th
3g signal.
I appreciate this is carrier specific but the black spots I had on my hox aren't there with the g3 plus the Web seems to load quicker and smoother.
I love the hox but am a little frustrated that the flagship device seems to have been made with low grade sub standard parts which ruins the hox experience.
Now I'm looking for way of getting tweaks like vipers venom rom on the g3 just so I can have the custom logo in my notification bar.

The battery is on par with the SGS3 if not slightly worse with the JB update. I constantly get ~4 hours of on screen time and days and days of standby time.
Can't say much, but you need to keep in mind the SGS3 was released almost half a year after the HOX, so there's gotta be more advantages.

Sub standard parts, when the s3 feels like it's made from cheap sh!t plastic. Who says it's parts and not software?

Just bought a V500 in the UK. AMA

It arrived today. Had a play and set it up as I wanted. Following the guides here, rooting took about 30 seconds (had to do it twice though) and I used flashify to flash the twrp zip. All super noob simple. No driver needed for me but I've had both LG P920 and Nexus 7 drivers installed already.
Issues so far:
Bleed - none.
Blue line - none.
Yellow hue - none.
SD card with TiBU etc - works perfectly.
Dim screen - no and in fact I set it to 60%. Full brightness is too bright.
Thin black border around screen - yes but how could it bother you?
Poor speakers - yes, they sound tinny/echoey below half volume. Fine above that. Think it's the aluminium back.
Battery drain - yes its quite fast. Set CPU to 1.1ghz and removed some bloatware its much better.
I'm sticking with the stock ROM for now. I'm familiar with the LG system and the apps are quite cool. TV remote works far better than those crappy 3-in-1 remotes from poundland.
Anyway, it seems to me that the screen issues have been resolved, at least with mine. I'm very happy with it. Any questions, fire away. Injustice is much nicer than on my phone.

As I mentioned in another thread for bleed there are 2 issues with this tablet. Traditional bleed which my latest tablet does not really exhibit, and edge light brightness. This is something only noticeable when brightness is at 20 and below. It is always on the bottom screen area in portrait mode and seems most visible on white background (i.e. white picture or browser page when turned into landscape to the button bar(when set to black theme) is not obscuring it. You will see about 7 bright white spots at the very bottom tablet in a row. I suspect this is a limitation of the used display technology. If you look at this video by another owner on youtube you will see what I am describing under the above conditions:

Hmmm now I am not sure what to do.
First one I bought was a white one. It had traditional light bleed in 2 corners and had this bottom edgelight issue at low brightness.
Returned it for a black one. This one is better in that it has no light bleed except the bottom edgelight issue. This occurs at brightness below 20-25. IT is not an issue during day time as I am needing brightness above 40 to comfortably enjoy the screen.
But for night time use I have to kepe the tablet a bit brighter than I prefer so as not to see it under some circumstances, I.e. landscape viewing.
I am trying to decide if it is worth returning as I love everything else about it. I am on vacation in the US and do not have the time to keep going back and forth to various best buy locations hoping for a better unit. Especially since seems the black model is in limited supply with nearest store 30 minutes away. However also given the exchange rate on my credit card, Returning it will likely cost me 20$ based on how the Credit card companies charge....
Where did you buy it from? And for how much?

what bloatware is installed on the tablet just curious ?
about to buy the tablet real soon, in regards to what you have said about battery can it last a day o more at least ?
does setting the cpu require root on this device ?
Bloatware: Well I guess that's personal preference. Stuff I won't use is some LG stuff (home launcher, LG back up etc), live wallpapers, stock browser and video player, Google books, music, movies etc.
Tablet has no chance of 1 day battery life unless you aren't using it very much. It's not horrible though, I've had 3 hours constant use this morning and I'm at 50%. Screen is under 40% for night time use though.
Not sure if you need root to underclock. I always root every device so I've never checked. I guess theoretically you do not.
