I am on E980 ATT, recently updated to KitKat 4.4.2, official upgrade.
I notice, my location is no longer accurate in the maps app and the "navigate" feature does not work, since my location never really gets pin pointed.
I have checked the "high accuracy" setting in the location settings. I have also cleared "Maps" data as well as uninstalled Maps updates. GPS tools app, also keeps saying "Trying to establish location..." or something of that sort.
Any thoughts?

Epic 4G Touch (GB 2.3.6.) I've rooted it and dumped all the bloat like Social Hub, Media Hub and such.
Yesterday, in "Running Services" I had the basics plus Email (I assume that's needed for grabbing SMS?), Swype, and such.
After 7 hrs of light/average use (4G on and off a few times, dloaded an app, BT on and off a few times, 15 mins of gaming, etc), my battery was at 87%. That was roughly my pattern for the last few days- great battery life for this device, I think.
Then yesterday afternoon, I played with Google Maps, turning GPS on and off, opening and closing the "Traffic" widget (do people actually use that??), etc, then shutting it all down, turning off location, etc.
I then see Google Maps has three processes running:
"NetworkInitiatedService"
"NetworkLocationService"
"FriendsAppWidgetUpdate"
that can't be shut down (when you do, they pop back up a moment later). I left it alone, though, figuring it was filling its cache or whatever- I don't get too worked up about apps doing their thing if they can do it then shut down.
So today, after charging it last night, those processes are still running and my battery is now at 88% after three hours. Google Maps seems to be killing my battery for no apparent benefit- I have no widget running that uses it, either (I have the Accuweather widget running, but it's not set to use current location).
I guess my questions are:
Is this normal- does everyone else see this behavior? Is there any way to shut Maps down that I can't find?
TIA.
[edit]
GPS has been off the whole time (except as noted above), I'm not signed in to Latitude (never have been), and Settings --> Location and Security --> Use wireless networks and use GPS satellites are both unchecked.
Guess time: Do you have Location services enabled? That might be the issue. Disable them and see if this goes away.

That's the first thing I thought of, but
Settings --> Location and Security --> "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites"
are both unchecked and always have been.
Is there another place I should be looking?
Is it cached or running in the foreground?

Erm, Google Maps is 'closed' (or at least I back out of it every time- I assume that 'closes' it), and in Cache Settings, Automatic Caching is set to "Wi-Fi Only".
Update:
I just went in to:
Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications
And hit "Clear Data" on the Maps app and it stopped all the services running.
Happy, but I didn't expect that. In fact, I might have expected the opposite.
Why would clearing its data stop it from running??
Also, it only shuts them down when you "Clear Data" from the system settings, not from Titanium Backup.

Open Google Maps again and see if those services get started back up. They do on my phone (LocationFriendService and MapsBackgroundService)
Autostarts!
That's why I always delete it and grab it from Market when I need it. Google+ does too I believe

Maps running
what works best for me is titanium backup pro....(only pro version) i personally dont like to keep uninstalling apps so with pro you can keep the apps that run all the time and than just freeze them and than they wont run any more and when you need them you just go back to titanium and defrost them !!!!!!!

Freezing is definitely a great alternative to uninstalling. I just use those apps so little that I figure uninstall. JRummy's Ultimate Backup is great too. It is also a feature in ROM Toolbox Pro if you long press on an app in App Manager. You can freeze there as well

Hi all,
after upgrading to JB 4.1.1, my GPS performance was terrible.
I tried every post available on different forums doing:
Flashed 4 ROMS - didn't help
edited and swapped 4 gps.conf files
eventually one thing made the difference.
I unmarked the "Google's location service" under the Location services settings.
now the GPS is locking in 5 sec.
I hope it will help you all.
Morris
The reason why the GPS isn't working well is because Google pushed out some bad A-GPS data, not necessarily related to you flashing 4.1.1. It seems to be fixing itself now, and you should be able to re-enable Google location services. Especially because the location services is required for many apps to get your location, such as Google Now.
Hey folks,
The latest version of Google Maps has had an impact on the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. Basically, you need to set Location to "high accuracy" to get a location fix! Whereas before you could use "power saving" (use wi-fi only to find location) and Google Maps would provide a location fix.
This is really, really horrible. I am not going to turn on my GPS chip when my tablet spends its whole day inside my house. But I still would like a location fix to be provided to Google Maps so I can do things like, easily find directions from "current location" to somewhere else, etc.
There is already some people complaining about this issue on Google forum, please add to it to give this issue further attention:

Hi,
I've disabled my Location and Google Play Services battery consumption reduced.
I've noticed that every time when I unlocked the phone, the system tries to access GPS - I can see for 1 second the the location symbol appears in the notification toolbar.
Previously I owned a G2 and didn't have the issue, with G2 you unlock of the phone and G2 doesn't try to start GPS, the location symbol doesn't appear in the notification toolbar! simple and battery efficient. Not the case with G3. Don't know what stupidity they did or what they've modified.
I don't know if is a Lollipop issue or a bug in LG G3 software.
It is stupid and drains battery fast.
I want to keep the Location active because of geotagging photo information or for using googlemasps. But it is annoying to start manually the location when using this.
I hope there is a workaround to this issue.
Tks
I'm using
5.0
SW
V20f-226-01
only to my phone happens this? or is a global issue?
did anyone experience this issue or I'm the only one?
did someone see this until now?

Not only that you must be root to use the application, but it is not ok in my opinion to have this functionality on the phone.
I get 2-3 days of full battery with location turned off!
With location turned on only 1 maybe 2 days!!! big difference !!!
Still my question remains...
Is this a bug in LG software or it happens only on my phone? and what's the workaround for this?
If you dont have root, have in the world you have figured that Google Play Services is trying to access GPS for one second?
Google playServices accesses GPS and drains battery

With Location ON it can be seen in the Settings->General->Battery->Battery Usage , that GooglePlayServices eats up to 20% battery when location is on.(daily usage) and as I've said previously the GPS is accessed every time you unlock the phone and go to home screen. You can see it in the notification toolbar the symbol of the GPS is ON for 1 second. I think that is the reason why it eats up so much battery.
When Location is OFF the Goolge Play Services (that includes also the Location Manager) eats up only 4% battery consumption and you don't see the GPS active each time you unlock the phone
From this I figured it out that GooglePlayServices has a bug or the sofware phone has a bug.
Is this happen to others?
how location is working on your side?
Hello...
are you experiencing the same issue? or I'm the only one?
You are the only one.
Make factory reset and see will it solve.

youp, tks , that solved the problem! I did a previous factory reset but after the new update I have to do it again.
This is not ok. Every time you get an update you must do a factory reset... not so ok.
My battery lasts now about 3 days. Google Play Services eats about only 2-3% of battery.
This is awesome!

I unchecked precise location (gps and network) and checked battery saving mode (wifi network based location) only in Location and this saved my batterylife.
fixed

I like the geo tag posision to use with the camera application so... I like the location to stay ON. the only bug that I had was it was accessing gps every time I unlock the screen.
Now works ok
service type name from GooglePlay

Dow you know what is the name of the service?
I've disabled
LoctionWearableListnerService and
LocationHistoryInjectorService
and bug is fixed!
but after some time ... even with this services disabled ... the problem reappears.
It is like some other service is reEnable them again even though in DisableService they are off(red).
Does anyone know what's the service name that should be killed?
It's not Play Services, it's some app that uses its API. For me it was LG Weather app.
I fixed it by setting my location manually in its settings.
is not the weather widget

is this a service or the widget weather?
I've removed the widget from the screen. The same!
Even placed the location manually in the settings of the widget.
Is there other place that I should be looking?
After all it shouldn't be the widget weather app. It refreshes the location in 3h interval.
I've tried also with the ROM fresh installed, with no new app installed still the same. GPS pups up!
Really stupid!
Has anyone fixed this by now ?or at least identified the cause?
Problem SOLVED
Come on guys!
Just go And turn SmartLock (Google) OFF in trust agents in security settings
As easy as pie!
Playing around with DisableService, I've stopped other services that were in use by GooglePlay.
Android system pointed out that GooglePlay has an error and needs to be updated from PlayStore.
I've updated GooglePlay from PlayStore and I don't have this issue anymore!!!
I leave my location ON all the time, I don't have battery drain anymore!!!
I think is a bug in GooglePlay version application that the ROM is coming with.
As soon as you get(update) GooglePlay form playstore, the phone behaves normally.
This way worked for me.
@Mo3ein - I had already SmartLock OFF. It's not from SmartLock
Curiosity got the best of me this morning and I updated to the latest Google Maps update (v 9.6) from 9.3. Well, upon opening, whenever I try to locate my position, I am prompted to "improve location accuracy" by turning on wifi. I can click cancel but the prompt returns EVERY time I try locating my position. Google Maps literally is unusable in this manner unless I turn on wifi.
I remember in the past, there's an option to disable it. But I can't find it anywhere.
To my horror, after I used Titanium backup to go back to v9.3, the prompt showed its ugly face upon first opening. It never did that before the update to 9.3. I had been running 9.3 for a while, since the updates after all take very long to cold start - I wonder if it's because I am still running the original 4.2.2 stock rom (I intentionally denied any OTA update). I've tried the following:
-clearing data/cache
-uninstalling/reinstalling 9.3
The prompt still shows on a cold start. I guess fortunately, if I hit cancel, v9.3 will then proceed to locate my location without further prompting. But I have to do this every time I open Maps now, which I didn't have to do before.
Any ideas/suggestions?

have you tried uninstalling it, turn on wifi, install it get a lock on your location, turn off wifi, then try the app to see if the popup comes back?
Just tried and nope, still the same I remember before the upgrade to maps 9.6, that prompt had a checkmark for "never ask again". I guess somehow the latest Maps version removed that checkmark. I am hoping that's a bug and not Google forcing people to waste their battery by turning on wifi so they can gather more data :-/

I'm glad you posted this because I'm really surprised no one seems to know how to fix this. It's been bugging me a lot . As student on campus I don't like leaving on wi-fi because the connection comes and goes as I move around, I'd rather just use the mobile network.
The one workaround I found is just to double-tap on the blue location pin to zoom in manually. Not a real fix but it helps.
