So I've used AdAway since I bought my GNex, and it's always worked perfectly until now. Whenever I was on 4.1.x ROMs, AdAway would block all the ads on various apps on any network connection, whether WiFi, 3G, or Edge. Ever since upgrading to a 4.2.x ROM, it is only blocking when I'm connected to a WiFi network. On cellular data connections its like I don't even have AdAway installed. I've tried it on different 4.2.1 ROMs, and they all give the same results. I'm pretty sure that the reason its not working has to do with the Android version, but I can't find anybody else that has this problem, or at least can't find it posted anywhere. Does anybody have a solution or suggestion on how to try and fix it?
Thanks.
Solution: APN proxy causes ads to show up. Removed it and all is good!
It blocks for 3G/4G for me just fine. On 4.2.1 myself.
Try reinstalling the app? what is your ROM / Kernel set up?
Try installing SuperSU https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImV1LmNoYWluZmlyZS5zdXBlcnN1Il0.

I actually have reinstalled the app. Should've went into more detail in my first post. I've tried redownloading from the market as well as reinstalling from a titanium backup, without data. I've uninstalled and reinstalled about 5 different times now, each with a different combination of reboots in between. I'm currently running ParanoidAndroid 2.99 beta8 with stock kernel. But I've had the exact same issue with each of the below configurations:
Paranoid 2.99 beta 6, two different beta 7s, two beta 8s. I've had the stock kernel with each beta, and also tried Franco.kernel r342 (if memory serves) on beta 6, and each beta 7s. I have only used stock kernel on beta 8. I've also had the stock ROM rooted installed with stock kernel. Come to think of it, I've only used Paranoid or Stock 4.2.x ROMs. Could it have something to do with the Paranoid ROM? But what confuses me is why it blocks on WiFi just fine, but no other connections. Paranoid has SuperSU with it, but I think when I rooted the stock ROM it was just SuperUser, not SuperSU.
Thanks for your help!

I had no problems with AdAway when I used my GN with CM10.1 + Franco (gave the phone to a family member, i keep it updated every other day). You can try another ROM or try https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DMsImNvbS5iaWd0aW5jYW4uYW5kcm9pZC5hZGZyZWUiXQ.. I find adaway to be more superior though but if adaway doesnt work and adfree. just use that for the time being

Believe it or not, I tried adfree and couldn't get it to work on WiFi or cell. I'm downloading JBSourcery now. Gonna try it and see how that works. I'm glad to know its just my phone having the issue, means it can be fixed! lol

Well I just installed JBSourcery ROM and downloaded AdAway from the Play Store. It still does the same thing, no ad-blocking on cellular data. It's really starting to drive me nuts! I use the Chive app for testing it, and that's where I notice the ads the most, but it isn't blocking in any app unless on WiFi.

Did you try AdFree? https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5iaWd0aW5jYW4uYW5kcm9pZC5hZGZyZWUiXQ..
Check settings on AdAway. Host sources, all checked. etc
Reboot.
Just downloaded chive and no ad on bottom.

I just checked the settings on AdAway and everything looked good. All hosts were selected. I uninstalled AdAway and installed AdFree, but it doesn't work either. Still get ads. If it matters, when I try to look at the TCPDump screen its always blank. Was on PA 2.99 when I had AdFree before.
Got any more suggestions? lol
Nope. Completely out of ideas. Are you completing wiping factory, dalvik and cache?

Always! When I flash a different ROM I do a Factory Reset, then Wipe Cache and Dalvik, usually twice. If I'm going from one kind of ROM to another I usually wipe /system as well, but if I'm just upgrading within a family of ROMs I only wipe Cache and Dalvik. I'm at a complete loss as to what could be causing it. I think the next thing I'm gonna try is formatting /system, data (not /data/media), cache and Dalvik, then install a 4.2.1 ROM, GApps, then AdAway and theChive and see if it works. If it does then maybe an app I have is conflicting, though I don't see how.
Thanks again.

Yep that's exactly how you're supposed to do it. It's just awkward how there are so many problems. What baseband do you use? lol
Do you perhaps have some sort of ad-blocking on your router?

Yeah I'm "somewhat" knowledgable about flashing and computers and things, so I try to do things the right way when I do them. That's part of why this bugs me so much. I could live with the ads if necessary, just not the fact that there's a problem. lol. I'm on LH1 baseband. Been on it through every 4.2.1 ROM I think. You think that could cause it?

Nope, no ad-blocking on the router. I've tried on different networks too, so I'm pretty sure it's not related to the router or wireless network. It's gotta be something on MY phone, I just can't figure out what.......

Not even sure. I'm having problems trying to wrap my head around this problem. Have you tried looking at other apps, websites ads? and not just for that one particular app?
Speedtest, Quadrant has an ad on the bottom.

Haha. You and me both. I use theChive to test because that's what I first noticed it on, but it happens in every app. I just checked again with speed test. Websites ads also behave the same. I'm so confused at this point, I just can't see how connection could possibly matter on just MY phone. I'm gonna try my plan from the last post when I get home and see if it works any better. Leaving work now.

Yeah, well, I probably had other things I should've been doing, but you know how that goes. lol.
I did a factory reset, wiped /system, cache, and dalvik before the ROM flash. Then I flashed JBSourcery v4, gapps, then wiped cache and dalvik again. When it first booted, I installed AdAway from Play Store, applied blocking, rebooted, installed theChive and speedtest.net from Play Store, and I STILL have the same problem. The only thing I have left to format is my sdcard I think, but I don't know if that would have any effect.
Would you mind telling me what your options are set to in AdAway or post a screenshot of the settings screen? Maybe I have a problem there somehow carrying over through ROMs. I appreciate all your help so far. This thing is really bugging me. Thanks again!

Mines are all pretty much default. Downloaded app and applied it. Didn't do anything special. Only thing checked in settings is to check for updates.
Have you tried Cyanogenmod? What kernel do you normally use as well?

I haven't tried Cyanogenmod yet. Maybe I'll try flashing that next. I usually use whatever stock kernel is installed with the ROM now. In the past I've used Franco.kernel and I've never used any kernel besides those two. The only thing I have left to check is something on my sdcard causing problems. With a factory reset, format /system, cache, and dalvik, there isn't anything that doesn't get wiped is there? I'm gonna try a different baseband too. I really don't think that'll fix it but stranger things have happened. Thanks again for your help!

i'm having the same issue. i'm rooted, and i uninstalled xPosed. ART still won't "take". how do i figure out what is conflicting with ART??
Only thing I could think of doing is doing a factory reset or flashing a new ROM/Firmware and updating. ART runs fine for me, I've been switching between Dalvik and ART a couple of times and both run fine, with Android optimizing itself appropriately after each reboot, which is fine. Since ART IS in Beta, Google kinda just put it there for the sake of it in KitKat, and so people would know what to expect in Android L. I wouldn't expect it to run flawlessly across all Android devices that ran it, it's probably just a matter of waiting until it's a bit more optimized for all devices in Android L if a factory reset/re-flash doesn't fix it, unfortunately.
Most ART majors don't work.. wait, what are we talking about here?
Hi, I want to Change runtime but every time i do it phone restart's but nothing changed runtime still remains same that is "Dalvik"
Can anybody help me , or tell me it is not possible to change runtime in Android one devices
I used art and dalvik ... It worked but dalvik is good as art experimental on KitKat ...
Yes.. its possible to change runtime in one devices, after selecting art and rebooting mobile, didn't you get "updating apps" dialog?
You are lucky

ART is highy unstable..I successfully changed but trying hard to get rid of it now.
After changing to ART system crashes continuously. You can't even change it back to Dalvik.
So friend stick with Dalvik otherwise you are taking a risk on stability of the device.

ART requires additional internal space.. for example if u had 1gb free internal in Dalvik ; after switching to ART it ll b 500mb free space. so need to hav at least some 600mb before switching .
and second thing make sure xposed installer is uninstalled before switching to ART.. bcoz it doesn't work with art.
make sure above two conditions
I think that caused problems in switching. I had more than 100 apps installed during switching, which simply means that internal space was low. So it lead lead to whole system crash

Hi,
I've been enjoying lollipop v20A since yesterday already and it's cool I have to say, but I miss using programs like titanium backup and Xposed framework. I just need to use xposed once to enable tabletmetrics for Spotify and also titanium backup to remove mcaffee antivirus. My device is rooted with busybox installed already. Anyone know how to revert back to Dalvik?
There is no Dalvik any more, ART (which stands for Android Runtime) has been built from the ground up by Google for android, it works a million times better than Dalvik, and Android L is the first release to use ART fulltime, with no alternative options available to us.
Dalvik is never going to make a return.
Titanium works perfectly on android L, you just need to install the Titanium beta version.
I am familiar with runtime environments.. All I want is a way to operate dalvik for once. It can be through a Patch or a kernel or whatever.

Its not even possible android lollipop is built around art dalvik isnt even present not at all its not even compatible with lollipop so dalvik cant work with lollipop and a kernel updat would not change a thing the whole system the whole lollipop release would have to rebuid to even make dalvik work and only google can do that.
I'm gonna make this work!
I am currently working on a cross-compatible version of the dalvikVM runtime that might solve the whole issue. It's based on KK dalvik, so the work is a bit buggy, but should something be stable enough for general use, I will supply it with instructions on how to implement it in the system.
I honestly don't believe that the Android RunTime is ready to be used yet. We aren't prepared for it's power, or even the lack thereof.
As far as lollipop goes, I love the UI, I just want Dalvik back as well, and I WILL get the best of both worlds, even if I have to brick a few devices along the way.

Any news?
im on carbonrom and i think about to switch to art but i have a few questions:
can i just, when all apps are installed, switch to art?
or is a fresh rom without apps recommended?
if i then flash my rom updates, i stay on art or im back on dalvik and i always have to switch back to art?
sorry, i have no experience with the use of art.
thanks in advance!
You can turn on art whenever you want with or without apps however the next boot will precompile all your apps that you have installed so it will say optimizing app X of XXXX apps and will be a very long boot however after that everything will go back to normal and the phone will boot at a normal speed and it will feel just like dalvik. When you update your rom it may reset it to dalvik I don't know of but I would assume it would. You should have slightly better app launch times with art enabled because the apps are precompiled.
thanks but if i change to art when all my apps are installed and one app is for example not compatible with art the device will boot anyway?
ive just tried it out but the device booted normally without app otimization and after the start flickered my screen and i had to reboot.
im still on dalvik...
