[Q] Returning rooted phone to HTC - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My camera lens cracked and my phone is rooted and unlocked bootloader.
Would you all return the phone to complete stock before sending it back to HTC? Should I worry at all about being S OFF?
They have multiple options for repair/replacement, but I'd prefer to just send them this phone back and have them send me a new one, since that's fastest and I sold my backup phone.

hey,
I just returned my m8 due to scratched lens, and it was rooted, custom romed and s-offed.
I followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235 and returned to stock, as well as reset the unlocked and tempered flags.
I was advised not to mess around with S-OFF, as this should be nothing to worry about.
The phone just arrived at the repair centre today. I'll see if they say anything about it, but I reccon not.

Thank you for your response. Let me know if they say anything. I think I'm gonna go the same route as you.

I'd go with the option of you sending in your phone first. If they send you one first and find ANY trace of your phone being tampered with, they'll charge you $175 no questions asked. My friend sent in the phone first, followed that guide, and they still found a trace (maybe he did it wrong). Regardless, they gave him the option of either paying $300 for repair (includes the $175 tampered charge) or they send it back to him. And he sent it In for the same reason as you. I'd send it in first considering the tamper charger is almost as much as a 2-year contract price

The HTC UK team told me that they will check the phone for tampering, and if something is found, I will get charged £23 before starting repairs and be given the chance to continue repair on my own cost, or return the phone as is.
I have just checked the HTC tracking system, and I can now see my phone as "In repair" status, so I am assuming all's fine.
The guide is for International versions and my phone is Three UK, so the steps are not exactly the same. However, the idea is the same, flash/restore stock rom, make sure supersu is installed, remove Tempered and Unlocked flags, flash stock recovery and then restart the phone loads of times, boot to bootloader and all that to make sure all the flags stick.

Yup! You are absolutely right! Cheers!
Try to put everything to stock(rom, kernel, recovery) then try to run the ruu.If you are s-off lock the bootloader and change your cid to your normal cid and remove the tampered flag. They wont say a thing because if you run the ruu it resets every thing like you have just opened your phone from the box.

Well HTC told me that they'd send me a replacement phone first with shipping label insured for me to send my phone back for $30. That way I'm not without a phone.
If I send it in the method you suggested, they said it could take up to 2 weeks to return it.
The other option was send my phone first with $20 and once they receive it they send a replacement back.
I have insurance, but this option costs me $30 and insurance is $90
I could just hit my phone with a hammer and get a replacement for $90 if it ends up being a hassle with htc

HTC One - Manufacturer warranty?

A friend gave me an HTC One thats useless to him since the battery wont accept a charge whatsoever.
It powers on and everything when its plugged in, but it dies immediately if its unplugged.
The phone still has a year left on the manufacturer warranty, but im clueless to HTCs rules/policy/procedure. I am not the original owner and have no papers or proof of purchase. Would I still be able to send it in as is? Or do I need some paperwork etc?
Thanks for any help.
I wasn't the original owner on my phone when I sent it in, and I didn't have to provide any proof of purchase or anything. I just had to pay for shipping to them.
They asked if I could take it to my service provider (VZW), and I said no I couldn't because I wasn't the original owner and they just said Ok, and started on my claim. I did it through online chat - not sure if phone service would be the same or not.

Yep, the devices is the one that gets the warranty regardless of who bought it. they track it with the IMIE that is on the phone.
OP i would suggest you talk to HTC, they are normally good about helping with HW failures like you stated. Couldn't hurt to ask.
Ahh ok, good to know, thanks Synister
I had similar experince, not orginal owner and they will accept RMA if phone is under warrenty.
You pay shipping to them, they cover shipping it back to you..
You don't even need proof of purchase. My wife had to use the advantage screen replacement and the Rep said when the phone first gets programmed, it sends the info to HTC, so they know when the phone was bought.

So I went ahead and did the live chat. I got disconnected twice (who knows why) but they had a record of the convo etc.
Anyway, went through the process to confirm it wouldnt take charge and am sending it in. Pretty cool.
Initially I opted in for the refurbished replacement and then mentioned it had a cracked screen. I got excited for a moment thinking the warranty coverage may actually accept it and they would send a non-cracked refurb . As expected though, no go there so im just gonna get the battery fixed.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Did you ask about the free screen replacement for the phone? maybe while they are fixing the screen they will do the battery too? I know some people are saying its only 6 months for the screen but i did convince a friend to try and they are going to fix his One Max screen and he's owned it for 8 months. worth a try.

Relocking Bootloader For Warranty Exchange

I dropped my phone a few days ago and thanks to the useless Dot View case, it popped out when it hit the ground and on second impact cracked my screen. I remembered you get one free screen repair so I pulled up my information and my 6 month window literally ends on Saturday! (Talk about timing)
I'm doing the advanced exchange, where they overnight you a new device and you send yours back. From what I read online, it's highly unlikely they'll reject my claim for the bootloader being tampered with, but with $599 on lock down I'd prefer to play it safe.
Is there a way to lock it back down if you're S-On? I tried the free S-Off method but it does not work with my phone all that's not an option.
Let me know please, or share experience if you have done the exchange like how I am and had no issues.
Thanks.

You can't lock it with S-ON, you can "relock" it, but theyll know it was unlocked. It's best to invest in Sunshine for S-OFF to lock and remove tampered banner then S-ON again. It's better to spend $25 for safety rather than take a risk and pay $599

OK, so my question is, if I pay the $25 to S-Off it then S-On after I fix all the other stuff, can they see it has been tampered with still? I definitely don't want to fork over $25 for a one time thing if I still run the risk of being detected.

If you unlocked at HTCDev they'll know it whether you lock or not doesn't matter. They already "know" they gave you the unlock code to unlock the bootloader.

That's exactly what I thought. The S-Off would just be a waste of money.
I think my best bet is to just re-lock (so it says re-locked), unroot, flash stock ROM and recovery and send it back. They'll probably charge me the $290 without question and I'll have to call and dispute it. From what I read in the General section on here is that quite a lot of people were told they were going to be charged $290 and they had to escalate the situation and eventually (most) everyone ended up getting it fixed for free.
I'm just worried they won't refund it because if they don't, I'm absolutely screwed. I'm just about to hit the 6 month eligibility for T-Mobile JUMP (I'm on the old school jump that you can do every 6 months regardless) and I was worried I'd likely get rejected for JUMP due to the cracked screen which is why I sent it in. I don't plan on keeping it much longer, depending on what comes out soon that I want, so the $29 overnight fee wasn't an issue. I have to use the phone for work so I had to get the phone over nighted to have it ASAP.
I just got warranty service. I returned to stock completely.... But I left it S-OFF. No problem. ?

Did you use s-off to achieve unlock though? Or did you use HTC Dev like I did?

I did warranty and sent it LOCKED but S-off and it caused a **** storm. They would not budge whatsoever on the $290 charge. Took over 2 weeks to get my phone back after they finally agreed to do a partial repair (meaning screen repairs but motherboard not) so I didn't have to pay the $290 but had to email them explicitly stating that I understand the warranty is now voided and take full responsibility for any problems from here on out

Yeah I saw your post in the general section.
That's what concerns me because I'm getting the new phone first. They'll have my phone so I won't have an option to say give it to me partially repaired.
I'm really not sure what to do.

Did they already send you the replacement? If not maybe call them and ask to cancel that and say you just want to have yours repaired or do the $19 option. This way if they quote you at least they'll tell you before sending you the replacement.

I thought about that but it'll likely be shipped by the morning. I made sure to place my order before the 4pm cut off.
I don't know if paying to get S-Off to lock everything back down is the best option or if they'd just look and see that I used HTC Dev and charge me anyway.
I jumped the gun by not reading up on the topic before deciding on the immediate replacement. I didn't even consider the fact that I unlocked it.

Yeah man I don't want to tell you the wrong thing here. I'd say sending in a phone s-off is a big no no because the guy I spoke to said that's like completely unauthorized software there's no way to argue against it. You might be okay with just the boot loader being relockedd. You could argue that it would void the 1yr warranty but the screen benefit being separate from that because they don't explicitly mention it when you unlock it.

This is more or less what I was thinking initially. Thanks for the tips, that's a good angle to take on it. I wish I had the unlock notice they make you click when you unlock it from HTC Dev so I could see if it mentions the screen replacement benefit.

Well, this could get interesting.
Still hasn't showed shipped so I called, since I paid for over night. I ended up talking to the same girl from yesterday, who was really nice.
She said they are waiting on stock and have been for a few days now. They refunded my $29 overnight fee. I told her that when I had called the second time and spoke with another lady (Nancy) from support, who processed my payment, I had specifically asked if I needed to sign for the package and she says yes. I asked if the package would be here Friday because I'd have to take the day off and she said yes. Now, you're telling me you guys have know for days that it was back ordered yet Nancy tells me it would be in Friday and I'm sitting here missing a day of work for nothing.
She apologized and I told her I was upset because I would now have to miss a second day of work to sign for my package.
When the time comes that they bill me, which I suspect they will, I'm going to use that angle. I just lost out on two days of pay, ~$220, and I'm not about to absorb another $290 to them.
Guess we'll see what happens.

If you aren't going to go the S-Off route, I would at least consider flashing the stock RUU. That would return the device to as close to stock as possible. Might not help, but it can't hurt.
You could always try to make the case that just because they sent you the bootloader unlock code doesn't mean you used it.

I tried to reply earlier but for some reason it kept giving me issues on my phone.
Yeah, that's the plan. Just got off work and I'm downloading the RUU now. Going to **RE-LOCK** the botoloader in a few minutes then RUU back to stock once it's done downloading and see what happens. I THINK it puts the ***UNLOCKED*** status back to ***LOCKED*** if I'm not mistaken. Then I'm just left with the fact that I requested an unlock code from HTC Dev.
Yeah, that didn't work. Flashed RUU but it still says RELOCKED. Hopefully I won't get dinged $300 for a "motherboard replacement".

Anyone use Uh Oh yet?

Did the replacement phone look brand new or was it refurbished? I dropped my phone today and the metal housing is all scratched and dented. The screen has some scratches but is not too bad that I need to replace it but I'm so OCD about my phones.
I got a brand new phone with the charger in retail packaging just like the original. Of course, HTC can repackage a refurbished phone into new retail packaging and I can't tell but I think it would be more time consuming for them, compared to picking a new phone and shipping it.
very frustrating...HTC won't send me a new phone first even though they advertise it.
They want me to mail my phone back first and wait for who knows long. This is false advertising!
What the heck?? It's clearly on their website! "Get a replacement next business day before you send us back your damaged phone. Requires a $599 credit card hold until HTC receives damaged phone." I'd keep calling or chatting until you get someone who knows what they're talking about.

i just got mine back from UHOH, they sent me back my actual phone after replacing the display. Didnt even remove my SOFF... how nice of them
I used Uh-Oh 11 days after receiving mine back in May. Cancel your service order and call back in, file an Uh-Oh claim. They are processed differently and it sounds like yours got started as a standard service claim.
With an Uh-Oh claim you will have 2 options depending on stock on hand: advanced replacement with the $599 CC hold (can ONLY be shipped to your CC billing address) or on site swap where you send in your phone and they send you a replacement within 2 business days.
In both cases you should get a new replacement.
The caveot is how you initiate the service claim. You must start out expressly saying its an Uh-Oh claim.
The reps are not the most knowledgeable people and can only operate within the options in the system. Trying to bully, intimidate or threaten your way around their limitations is pointless and will not net you any gain.
It is best to cancel your claim, call back in (not online chat, actually speak to them) refile your claim.

Little over 2 weeks. They quoted 7-10 business days
Has anyone replaced their phone through Uh-Oh and requested a different color than the one originally bought? I wonder if this is possible.
Just took advantage of Uh-oh protection here too. Sent in my phone on a Thursday, got it back the following Tuesday. Got a new phone (idk, it could be refurbished for all I know). All I know is that it is not the same phone... But I am glad because I am selling it in this case haha. Overall, great service!
Has anyone that used Uh Oh unlocked with HTCDEV? Or do most use Sunshine to avoid the warranty snafu's? I'm still trying to figure out what all I'll lose from the Warranty if I HTCDEV unlock.

Unlocking through HTCDev is covered in Uh-Oh. You would have to read the policies for using non-oem software to unlock but I don't see why using sunshine would be a problem if they accept water damaged phones that no longer work. But in terms of WARRANTY, sunshine is not covered whereas HTCDev unlock is.
If you have the opportunity to unlock through HTC, I don't why it would make sense paying for Sunshine when you can get the same thing from the oem for free with the warranty intact, saving hundreds on buying another phone.

Can't get the phone into fastboot at all

Hello. trying to relock bootloader to return to bestbuy and for the life of me I cannot get the phone into fastboot with adb. I have USB Debugging on, the computer authorized through the phone, but fastboot devices doesn't do anything. I can't even flash a factory image. I can even get it to show up with adb devices but that's all I can do. I have all the drivers installed and am plugging into the back of the windows 10 computer and also tried two different cables. I'm not sure what to try next. I also cannot get it to go into fastboot with power and vol+. Phone works great otherwise. Nothing wrong with it.
You're typing adb reboot-bootloader? And that doesn't do anything?
Okay I'm an idiot. That was the problem. I was typing in fastboot devices. Still weird how the factory image wouldn't send it to bootloader.

Are you getting a replacement or simply returning? Curious because I think I might be taking mine back. To many issues. Part of me wants to get another one but if it comes with 7.1.1 and I can't unlock bootloader I'd return for good anyways and skip this phone.

I'm going to try to return because I don't like the locked bootloader and I also think the Pixel XL is too big. It's hard to use with one hand and I'm afraid I'm going to drop it. I'm on my Note 3 until my Pixel comes in from google, but I actually don't mind the Note 3 since the bootloader is now unlocked for Verizon. There's a lot of good roms out now. I don't know if I can step back to the Note 3 camera from the Pixel and 6P before....

Haven't returned anything to best but before what did you tell them? Did you have to show them the issue? Reason I ask is because I was in there black Friday and the 2 people in the mobile department were very rude to the point where I got in an argument with them and had to talk to the manager. I just wanna at least try getting a new one before returning for good. Was there a restocking fee or anything

Hers was a new one that I ordered. But I've returned phones to them a bunch of times with no issues. I replaced my wife's old 6p twice at best buy. They just gave me a new one off the shelf both times.
They would not return it because it was outside of the 14 day return policy. Their return policy with the holiday season is ambiguous but I'm stuck with it now. Maybe I'll try to sell on swappa and get a Pixel or go back to my Note 3.

I just wanna at least try getting a new one before returning for good. Was there a restocking fee or anything

So I managed to return it today. I brought in the return policy from online which shows off contract phones are under the holiday return policy. There might be a $35 restocking fee though. I had someone more competent today than last night.

I actually got really lucky yesterday. I looked online and the only best buy that had them in stock was an hour and 10 minutes away from me. I called customer service to confirm. So then I wanted to talk to someone IN the actual store before driving there and confirm the return process and also make sure it was there. Figured out that if you call your local best buys number it's nearly impossible to get someone from that actual store and not customer service. I pretended to have a question for the Geek squad and once I got them on the line asked for the mobile department.
So I talked with them and confirmed they had it..told him what was happening with mine and he said it was no problem and he will set one aside for me. He mentioned something about "processing the return" so I wanted to clarify with him what was gonna happen. Best buys $10 a month deal is different than Verizon's. I was worried that if he processed my return and did the purchase from scratch that it might somehow mess this loop hole up and I'd be stuck with Verizon's 2 year bill credits. Thankfully this guy was familiar with EXACTLY what I was talking about. He said they don't know how it is different than Verizon's deal but said he is totally aware of it. So he said he would talk with someone about the exchange process and call me back. Over an hour later I had to call them again. He told me I had two options and he said the first option is something they aren't really supposed to do. He told me they would literally just swap them out and not process any kind of return/exchange with Verizon. He said the only downside to this would be if I ever wanted to trade the phone into Verizon I wouldn't be able to because the one on my DPP would be the original IMEI not the replacements' IMEI. Second option was to process a return and set it all up from scratch. He said we would then have to call Verizon to fix the pricing and get me the $10 deal and that it most likely would be with Verizon's bill credits though.
Naturally I jumped on the first option and told him I'd be right there. Then I asked if I HAD to activate the replacement there and he said "yea that's normally how they have to do it". I then explaied to him how I can't unlock the bootloader if it installs the software update during setup so I need to take the SIM out and skip the setup so I could unlock with my computer at home. Again he knew exactly what I was taking about and said he would ask the other guy again and call me back. 10 minutes later he called back and said "yea we can do that it won't be a problem" so I told him I'd head up there right then.
So I get there and it was as simple as handing him my box (they didn't even look it in).. he did some kind of magic on his computer.. as he was doing this I opened the new one..took out the SIM and skipped through the setup..enabled developer options and turned off automatic updates.. then he gave me a receipt and that was it!
What started out as a confusing nightmare because no stores had them in stock so I was worried about a replacement shipping with the new software.. ended up working out easier and better than I could have imagined.
I got so LUCKY that I dealt with the person I did at that Best Buy becasue the people at my best buy would have been clueless and not done anything like this for me.

Glad it worked out. Expecting my Google Store Pixel to come in Monday.

Verizon Asurion Replacement & Rooting

Currently with Verizon and I'm in the process of getting my device replaced by Asurion after I cracked the glass on my camera.
I believe I recall some people getting devices back that they were able to unlock the boot loader on their device when receiving the Asurion replacement. I think there was something about unlocking it before it boots up with the Verizon SIM in it or something like that.. Does anyone have any information in regards to this? If I have a chance to root my replacement device prior to using it I would like to take advantage of that.
Expect a locked device, but be pleasantly surprised if you are able to unlock the bootloader. People in the root bounty thread have tried to unlock without a SIM inserted and failed.
I will add one thing...
While something like this happens all the time (it actually happened to me; which is the only reason why I got mine from Verizon but can achieve root...), I believe the circumstance that this happens for might exclusively be only if you send yours in for a warranty replacement, so maybe (or at least less likely) not for an insurance replacement... I mean it makes sense because with all of the initial problems of "taimen", Google would rather just replace defective ones with straight-from-factory units. I wonder if one can say the same with Asurion and insurance replacements...
But I can't say I know a lot about Verizon, Asurion, and the warranty procedures...
sidenote: I actually pay for and also have Asurion insurance on all 4 of my lines as well....
Yes, just to clarify this wont be a warranty done by Verizon but a replacement sent to me by Asurion.
I'll mess with it when I get it tomorrow if no one really has much insight in regards to this.
