I need to turn my phone on without using the power button. The power button on the top left side of the phone is broken and no longer works. This corner of the motherboard is slightly exposed, and I have previously turned the phone on by touching the mobo with a paperclip, but as far as I'm concerned it's just luck. I was hoping for either turning it on by computer, or a map of a mobo that showed what I could push/touch to turn the phone, if possible. Or, any other method. Thanks.
EDIT: I don't have my USB cable, so now I can't use any computer method anymore..
EDIT2: I found the problem: The small chip/power button attached to the motherboard came off. I'm hoping I can find someone in (Raleigh, NC) to solder it back on for me, assuming that it can be soldered.
What I was doing before with the paperclip was magic.. I just touched the pins and it turned on, but I can't do that anymore
EDIT3: Shorted out the power switch pins. My new power button is my battery

Look like your back to the paperclip then. Sorry, i had too, but seriously, I don't think it would work with the computer anyway. There's no way to communicate if it isn't on. Can you see where the button connects?
The only way to correct this is to either fix the mother board or continue using the paperclip. Unfortunatly most electronic devices like this, only have one "actual" method for turning them on. I do like your idea of bypassing the switch to turn the unit on though.
Updated. The power switch came off the motherboard.

im no expert...but that sounds like a not-so-good thing.
I fixed the issue.. sort of. Shorted out the power switch pins on the motherboard, so it stays "on" indefinitely. My new power button is my battery
A limiting fix, I guess.. but it works.
wow..you are not gonna let this one die huh? maybe its time for some parts? or a new phone?
Why should I let it die? Everything on the phone is fine, I just lost the power switch. Now I got the thing hotwired and it works fine.
I'm locking this thread....no more need for it.
I just bought a GSM Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store for $350, and it won't turn on out of the box. I tried turning it on with the battery in, plugged in with battery, plugged in without battery, etc. and nothing is working. The power button refuses to do anything and holding the volume buttons doesn't do anything either.
What should I do?
return it....
I'm asking if this is a common issue or if there's any way to fix it. Is there supposed to be a light on the device when it's charging? Because even with the battery inserted, the phone doesn't light up or anything with the power cable plugged in.
This is going to be so stupid if I have to return it on day 1. I understand some products come in DOA but seriously, don't they at least make sure this stuff works before they send it out?
FIXED: Nevermind..apparently the cleaning solution they use on the gold contacts for the battery causes it to not connect sometimes, and rubbing it with my finger made the phone turn on. WOW!

You asked what you should do. Without further testing it is hard find the cause of the problem. Could be the vcc regulator, battery charger, battery connector, usb connector, usb cable, power adapter.
Try a different cable and supply. If still no response from the unit, hold both volume buttons and power, it should do a quick vibrate and turn on. if still no response, its DOA and should get it rma'd back soon so you can get your replacement quick because i know how much it sucks when you are excited for a new toy and it comes in broke >.<

Lol that's the weirdest issue I've ever heard of
dude.... no ****, i just had the same problem and rubbing the contacts fixed it :highfive:
Hi, I'm wondering if any electronics expert can help me with this. I dropped my htc m8 and the screen shattered. I decided to replace the screen my self using YouTube videos as a guide. I replaced the screen, connected everything, and powered it on and it worked flawlessly.
When I tried to fit the phone back into the silver case, I did not fit properly so I removed it. I tried powering the phone but it didn't power up. After a bit of wiggling with the top power ribbon, I managed to power it up. But the button is not stable, ie sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Is it an issue of a bent cable? If there is a solution that does not involve buying a new board I will appreciate it.
So here's how it went:
I opened the phone, replaced the port (the small boardlike thing)
assembled my phone to try it.
The phone started
Then I put all the screws and sim card But I didnt get signal no matter how long I waited
So I dissassembled it again. I was a bit harsh and broke the "Power" button. (the rubber thing that makes it bounce fell off, and an small metallic circle that probably completes the circuit fell off as well.
(Google "galaxy note 2 charger port" for a picture, cant post external links @[email protected])
Checked everything was plugged properly and tried to start it with the tip of a paper clip to complete the circuit where the power button should be (that small round thing)
Nothing happened so I googled a method to start it without using the powerbutton:
youtube: Gre9qaJyCZw
Basically its to plug the charger, wait for the battery logo to show, unplug, take out the battery and put it back in quickly.
So I assembled the phone again to try that and when I connect it to charge it the screen flashes for half a second (no words no nothing, it just brightens up for a bit) And then the red led that means its charging turns on after a couple of seconds.
After doing the trick, the led turns on blue....then the phone vibrates a bit(seems its starting up, but with no sound or nothing in the screen)
And then the "menu" soft key blinks a couple of times and then back to nothing
So I just have no idea what to do @[email protected] I dont mind replacing the button but I would rather not spend on it if there's something else wrong with the phone...any ideas?
And I just bought this to replace another phone that broke ;_;
EDIT::::::
I replaced the charger port for the old one and tried the starting trick. but to the same result: after doing the trick, the led turns on blue....then the phone vibrates a bit(seems its starting up, but with no sound or nothing in the screen)

you probably messed up the mainboard or some connections.
Try to power it on with microusb board disconnected.
Make sure every single connection to the main board is connected properly

Any suggestion as to how I can start the phone with the power button broken and without the microusb board?
I already checked all the connections that you can see when replacing the microusb board (the back side of the motherboard) Is there connections worth checking in the front?
Do those symptoms sound familiar for any specific problems? (Like non working screen or motherboard)
- Charging takes a couple of seconds to turn on the red led when connected but shows nothing on the screen.
- Trying to start it with taking out the battery trick makes the led turn blue, then the phone vibrates a bit, then the menu soft key flashes a couple of times.
Update: I found 2 more symptoms
1° Kept restarting the phone with the battery trick, and a couple of times I could hear the music of the phone starting up, but it seems to be at random or due to some factor I have not spotted yet
2° If I connect it to the computer it detects the phone and lets me access the files. Kies detects it as well
If phone can be accessed through kies I think you have broken some connection between logic board.
Power button and volume + - buttons should have the same round metal part, which will work after swapping.
I think you should give up, maybe there is still hope for repair.

Thats the weird thing. if you take a look at that phone's board, the only things that are within "breakable" range when you open it with a plastic tool are:
power button
charger port
earphones port
volume buttons
And they all seem fine except for the power button. there's no other flexors or anything even remotely close to where the tool was used. (and where I got a bit rough)
Does the order in which you plug back in the battery matter? I plugged the battery cable in, then the interconnect cable. I broke the digitizer during the replacement, so I have no way of seeing if it actually boots. When I hold the power button to turn it on, it vibrates a little, so I know it is turning on, but if I wait 5 seconds and try it again, it seems to boot again. Does this mean the phone can't boot anymore? I have also tried plugging in a usb c to hdmi adapter to view the screen on a monitor, but no luck.
I had the same problem, I endup buying up new screen which didn't fix the issue. I had bad screen and mainboard. you can take it to store and have him plugged the good screen to see if its booting up, if its then you can buy the screen if its not then its not worth it to get both replaced
