Hi,
I read somewhere that ICS can have high res contact photo in the People App, but only when synced with Google+.
Is that true?
That means, if you don't sync with Google+, and utilizing only Google Contacts (GMAIL Contacts), you will get low resolution 96x96 from Google Contacts.
So, how do you add the Google+ profile of your contact in the People App?
Do you add it manually? Or the People App will automatically search and pick one for you?
Because, if we can add the G+ profile manually, I think we can have workaround by creating G+ profile for them manually !
This is a right f**k up pain in the ar5e problem that could probably be easily fixed by google.
I used an external app to link all my google contacts to my facebook contacts thus providing pictures, its better to do it that way because if I install a custom rom that requires a wipe I dont have to re-link the contacts.
Unfortunately about 0.5% of my phone contacts and facebook friends have google plus so i've no idea how to get around it.
ICS looks so cool and polished only for someone to ring me and present me with a picture that looks like its come out of a 1980's pong game. grrr

Make sure you have your IRL friend in your normal Android/Google contacts, then if you add your manually created "friend" on Google+ there will be 2 separate contacts on your phone - one for phone, one for G+.
If you go to the "phone" contact and select "edit" in the menu then on the next page there will be an option to "Join" in that menu.
If you then select the G+ contact, it will be joined to the phone contact as one user with phone number and G+ pic!
Or I think you can just manually add a photo to the contact but I haven't tested whether that is definitely hires or not.
All my contacts are on Google Contacts. I've assigned photos from Picasa but they still look crap...
Why Why Why..
I think you can manually change contact photo with high res one.
But, once you synced with Google Contacts, it will be replaced with the low res from Google Contacts.
I wish there is an option to just disable contact photo sync, photo only.
Or, is there any clever developer who could create an app to simply replace all contact photos with user selected one?
I could imagine the app would work like this:
. The app works like the contact app, when started it will show you contact list
. Then you can assign photo manually to each contact
. App will remember this assigment
. Woth one button hit, the app replaced all contacts pgoto with the assigned one
So, every time after we synced with Google Contact, we simply run the app, hit the replace all contact photos button, and we are done!
Okay, any dev out there? I will pay premium for this kind of app!

a much easier way is to get a decent sized pic of your contact and save it to your phone and then edit contact > edit pic > select new pic. simples! - they DO NOT have to be from Google+ at all!
Hope that helps!

Not quite true. As soon as you sync your contacts with Google it sends them to the cloud which uses 96x96 photos. For some reason these then get used on the phone.

In my experience the phone will keep the high res contact picture, but if you delete your contacts for whatever reason (e.g. factory reset) then restoring from Google Contacts will bring back the low res versions.
The Google+ versions seem to work with high res photos, but since only about 4 or 5 of my "real life" friends actually use Google+ this is a bit pointless for me.
This is a problem with Google Contacts only saving low res pics, and it has been a request from the community to upgrade these for absolutely ages. So far it has gone unnoticed, which I presume is because of the focus on using Google+.
There seems to be a lot of duplicated features now G+ has come out, such as Picasa/G+ Photos; GTalk/Messenger; Google Contacts/G+ Contacts; and these really need to be consolidated which will hopefully iron out issues such as these.
guys how do I edit a contact on the phone?
Ive gone into the people app, gone into the contact and even long pressed but I cant see to edit the contact?
I want to assign a high res photo to the contact from a photo in my gallery. Is this possible?

I really don't understand why they didn't turn long press on in the People App. Having to reach all the way at the top of the screen to get to "Menu" icon and then "Edit" takes a lot more effort especially when you have to edit a lot of contacts.
Anyhow. Do you guys know whether all the "linking" I made to each and every single contact to its Twitter or Google+ account will be sync'ed or backed up on Google's server? Thinking about installing custom ROM.
Does anyone know how to link contacts from within the phone (like when you have multiple contacts like with Whatsapp adding its own version of the contact)?

Took me a day to figure this out myself. Haha. Go to "Edit" under the menu button for that contact, then hit once you're in the edit mode, hit menu button once again, then hit "Join"
Morning all!
if I go into accounts & sync, add account, Facebook
nothing happens, it goes back to the list which has Google & Twitter in it. I have Facebook installed
any ideas?
cheers
The Facebook App needs an update to use the API and sync the contacts i guess.

We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation --and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.

My bigger problem with the facebook app is that the menu button is not accessible in ICS. As a result, you can't change the defaults for how often the app refreshes (I like to disable auto refreshing).

it's not for me, it's near the very bottom of the list
NOTE: I am not the developer of this app, I have simply decided to create a thread about this on XDA.
NOTE 2: Using this app will get you all of your facebook contacts, regardless of whether you have a matching name in your contacts or not.
EDIT: Working fix (UNTESTED BY ME) found by droppedd and Ovalteenies:

NOTE 3: This app does not sync phone numbers, only hi res pics, RECENT updates (not all of them will have status updates) and allows you to view their wall from the contact app.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey everyone,
I stumbled upon an app called HaxSync which basically makes facebook sync for devices with Ice Cream Sandwich possible. I have tested this myself with this rom and this kernel. Not only does this app give you hi-res pictures from facebook, it also gives you recent status updates, and a quick link on each contact for viewing their facebook wall.
The app can be found here
Yes, it costs a dollar but trust me, in the end its worth having these hi-res pics on the amazing Galaxy Nexus screen
How to use the app:
1.) Install official Facebook App.
2.) Go to System Settings => Accounts & Sync (Android Settings, not Facebook App Settings).
3.) Click "Add Account" => HaxSync.
4.) Click "Authorize HaxSync".
5.) Confirm Authorization
6.) Wait for HaxSync to finish syncing.
7.) You should now see your Facebook contacts in the Android "People"-App.
NOTE: The one thing that doesn't work yet, is syncing the phone number of each contact but it can be added manually(scroll down to the second part).
Alternatively, you can add facebook pictures manually if you wish to do so, but it is fairly cumbersome, especially if you have many contacts
NOTE 2 : I am in no way affiliated with the creator of the app, I'm simply trying to help my fellow XDA members by providing them with the best experience possible.
ISSUES/PROBLEMS WITH APP
-Phone numbers don't sync
-Can't see current status of contact (e.g. available, away, busy, etc - probably not meant to be implemented in this app as of yet, so not really a defect.)
HOW TO SYNC FACEBOOK PICTURES WITH EXISTING APPS MANUALLY
1.) Open the facebook app
2.) Click the menu button located on the top right of the facebook app, and search for the appropriate contact.
3.) Find a picture of them
4.) Click menu, set as, and contact icon
5.) Navigate to the appropriate contact, or if necessary create a new one.
Thats it! Pretty simple, but with the app above, you get facebook status updates, hi res pics and a quick link in each contact to view their profile on facebook
HOW TO SYNC FACEBOOK NUMBERS WITH CONTACTS
1.) Open the facebook app
2.) Search for the appropriate contact
3.) Click send a text message
4.) Long press the number
5.) Copy it
6.) Open the people app
7.) Click create a contact
8.) Long press the space in the phone slot provided
9.) Paste the number
Im already using it since yesterday, and it works.
The thing is that i had to link the profiles it manually for around 90% of my contacts. Probably would have the same problem with the official, so it's ok.
Also, after the work doing all this merge work, I'd lost everything after update the app by market. Not cool.
Still, I reccomend it.
Anyone know how to restore which contacts are merged past a data wipe? This is by far the most time consuming part of flashing new roms for me.

In the People app: Overflow menu (the two dots) -> Contacts to display -> Customize -> HaxSync: Uncheck "All Contacts." You'll only see HaxSync contacts that exist in one of your other contact providers after that; just make sure you've manually joined any people the app couldn't autojoin beforehand (for example, if they had their name spelled differently on GMail and Facebook).

Hi
I did try to Google but couldn't find the answer....
Is it possible to choose the default messenger per Contact (not global default messger App?)
For example, for some of my contacts I would like to use WhatsApp, and for others SMSPro.
When I chose to send a message to the respective contact (from the address book), the appropriate app should be launched.
Any help would be most appreciated. This has been nagging me for sometime.
Thanks in advance

Firstly, thanks for replying to my query. Now for the reason....
For my contacts who are availabe on WhatsApp I would like to use it, for the rest I would like to use normal messaging app.
(Others may even want to extend it to other similar apps too.)
I'm not 100% sure, but i don't think you can. Unless you just don't choose a default message app. Then everyone you wanted to send a text message, a box will pop up asking which app you want to use. I think.

Thanx, this is what I do right now but is quite annoying. I guess I will use the WhatApp app directly for the few contacts that use this specifically.
Would be a great option to have.
I could think a similar aspect for the dialer app too. Use Google Voice, default dialer, ....
I did my best to create an decent and free SMS small app.
This can be useful when you want to quickly read/reply to an text message without leaving your current application.
Features:
-send and read text messages in threaded views
-quick access to 5 most recent threads
-communication with native app (through sms database): sent messages will come up in the native apps conversations
What it doesn't (or shouldn't ) do:
-mark messages read by the small app as read in the main app. (see below)
-anything with group messages
-copy/delete/forward/... messages
-show smileys as images (they're shown as plain text), make links, numbers, etc. clickable,...
I tried to mark the messages as read in the native app, and although it worked and the message was read, the native app didn't update his icon nor delete the notification. The unread counter was only reset when another message came in and was opened with the native app. Because of this I decided to not mark them as read at all, so when you would open the message in the native app all counters, notifications etc. would be properly updated.
To run this app, press the recent apps button and look for the sms icon in the horizontal bar (you might need to scroll to the right).
Although no malicious actions are intended at all, this application is in Beta stage (and will remain in that stage for quiet a while, I suspect) and comes with absolutely no guarantees. It might corrupt your sms database, send messages to the wrong persons etc. Usage is at your own risk and application is provided "as is." I recommend to make a backup.

Glad you like it. I won't put it in the play store (for now) because I'm to cheap to pay for developer account, just to release something for free.
By the way, if you find any bugs, please let me know and I'll try to find some time to look into it. Extra features may also be suggested off course, but since I'm really busy it may take quite a while before I start looking into it.
