[Q] Screenshot Won't Work - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey All,
I'm S-Off, running SinLess GPE ROM, and neither of the shortcuts to take a screenshot (power + vol down, power + home) work.
The developer and others using this ROM say there's no problem, so I must have a problem somewhere else, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be.
And PLEASE don't tell me I'm doing it wrong, I had an HTC One XL before this and am well aware of how to take a screenshot, and honestly played with every combination and delay of button pressing possible before asking.
The only way I've managed to take a screenshot is by assigning it to "long press back," but that's not really a solution (it just tells me that at least the phone is capable of taking a screenshot!!)

[REQUEST] [MOD] screenshot with button combo rather than swipe

wondering if anyone is able to modify the Samsung framework so we can have a hardware button combo (ie any combination of volume, home and power) to save a screenshot, rather than the stock implementation of palm swipe across the screen.
I find the palm swipe only works for me once every couple of tries, and can often scroll the exact content on the screen you are trying to capture.
Alternatively, Any app suggestions which can achieve this would also be helpful...
EDIT SOLVED already possible with stock frame work... Press and hold both power and home simultaneously for about half a second, and screenshot is captured.
Press n hold the power and home button together !
Power + Home presssed with correct sync indeed
Hmmm doesn't work for me on omega 4.1.... ?? I see online that this should work as an option... Any setting to enable it?
Edit.... Ok got it push both bottoms simultaneously and hold for half a second. Perfect thanks all.
I would have preferred if they stuck with the volume down+ power button combo like stock Android 4.0
Are you holding them in? I thought it wasn't working at first, turns out you just need to hold them both for about a second and it'll work.
I do prefer the SE way of having the option in the LongPressPower options but hey, I love my S3 more.

Glad I found this. The swipe gesture is frigging useless for anything that scrolls.

Issue with Volume down button

This might be the wrong portion of the forum, but I've got the latest Viper rom installed on my 10
I found that my volume down button doesn't affect volume at all, ever. It turns the screen off.
I've even dug through every option, toggled everything on or off testing one thing at a time, and it still does that. Only volume up brings up the volume window. It's obviously rom related, since it doesn't do that on stock (of course it doesn't)
If anyone has any suggestions, or a fix for this, let me know where to look.
Thanks!

Bricked my M8, only thing that happens is the screen switches on and off

I tried flashing a custom rom (forgot which one) now my phone does not work AT ALL, CAN'T BOOT INTO RECOVERY, FASTMODE, BOOTLOADER, ETC
What do you guys think I should do?
I don't think I like the tone of this post. Instead of posting the same thing over and over needlessly (and in bold and caps, which is normally construed on the internet as YELLING); how about providing actual useful information, such as what appears on the screen (since you say it still goes off and on) and why you think it won't go into bootloader (what button sequence did you try?).

Sorry cause last time I posted this I got replies where people keep telling me to use ODIN and obviously that doesn't work (cause ODIN is for Samsung) so it ticked me off too much.
Tried every button sequence
Vol Up + Power
Vol Down + Power
Vol Up + Down + Power
nothing works
Screen literally goes on and off (flickering)

You must have asked in one of the "noob friendly" threads. Often n00bs are trying to help n00bs there, and yes ODIN will definitely not work.
Hold down the power button + vol up until your phone goes to reboot (could take up to 20 seconds). AS SOON AS THE SCREEN GOES BLACK slide your finger from vol up to vol down. This will boot you to bootloader.
Alternatively, if your phone is already powered off, simply boot it up by holding power + vol down. This will also take you to bootloader.

Okay, well posting in an angry fashion isn't going to help matters. The folks that ticked you off probably won't even read it, or care that you are angry. And folks like me that just want to help will just be turned off.
My suggestion next time, would be to ask in a diplomatic way "please don't tell me to use Odin, since it doesn't work on HTC devices", or something to that effect. Get your point across, in a way that won't piss of others.
But thanks for editing the top post.

So it flickers on when you try the button sequences (and which ones, if they don't all have the same result)? And how long does it say on for, and what does it show (HTC logo, bootloader, or something else) when its on? Then it goes back off until you do another button sequence?
More detail is always better when troubleshooting this type of thing.
Also, I know you said you can't remember which ROM you flashed, but if you can recall anything at all, its pretty important to determine what you did and what the problem may be. Did you get it from the M8 development forums here on XDA? Anything else you can recall is possibly relevant.

I would agree to try this. Depending on the status of the phone, it may even take a minute or more holding power + vol up before a reboot is initiated. Folks often will say they tried the button sequences, but not realize they didn't hold the buttons long enough.
Also, try to charge the phone for a few hours, and try again. Try the button combo with and without the wall charger attached (strangely, some folks have had luck doing the button combo with the charger attached).
Also, if/when the phone reboots, once you slide your finger down to the vol down button, its important not the let go, until the bootloader screen appears. If you let go too early, it will fail to go to bootloader.

[SOLVED/ NON-ISSUE TO BEGIN WITH]Power + Vol Down not screenshotting.

Like the title says, holding the Power button along with the Volume Down button is not making my locked, stock 7.1.1 Pixel XL take a screenshot.
Is there an option to toggle the functionality that I may have accidentally flipped or did Google remove the functionality in the update?
Works for me. There's nothing to enable. Just simultaneously press vol down and power, and hold them both until it takes the screenshot. If that's not working, either your timing is off, you're not holding them down long enough, or you have a case that's interfering.
Strange, it's working for me now.
LOL. Well I posted a picture of a screenshot of this thread to prove my screenshots work, but apparently uploading pics to XDA is broken right now, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

Change Home/Fingerprint button behavior

I just got a HTC10 to upgrade from the M9 I had, and so far, I'm liking it, even with the stock ROM (but rooted with Sprint bloatware frozen), but one thing I haven't been able to figure out is the home/fingerprint button behavior. If I'm at the home screen and I press it, I don't have a huge issue with it bringing up all the screens for me to pick which one I want (but long press for it would be better), but I find it annoying that when I am in an app and press it, it takes be to the screen where I have to select which page I want, rather than to the last one I was on. Is there a way that I am overlooking to change this behavior?

I think you mean the multitask button rather than the home button, and if you double press it it switches back to the previous app.

I think you are correct... but why why should I have to press the button once to get where I need a few more presses to get where I want or press it once plus still need few more presses to get where I want? Is there any way to change this misbehavior?
I guess you could say my annoyance with this (mis)behavior is related to muscle memory... Every other Android phone I've had would take you to your last 'home' page when you pressed the similar button.. This one is (mis)behaving differently from every other phone I've had... It woudl be really nice to change it.
FWIW, I was finally able to change the behavior of the home/multi-function/fingerprint button - by ditching the HTC ROM for LinageOS 14.1. Better battery life, no sprint junk, seems to run better overall and I can actually assign different ringtones or sounds to different contacts. For whatever reason, that option seemed to be absent on the HTC ROM.
I still don't get what behavior you mean? Or do you mean that when you press the home button you are taken to the standard home screen, instead of for example the app drawer or another home screen page? Quite confusing what you mean
