[Fix] 4.3 ROMs stuck on splash screen after first reboot

For those of you who keep getting stuck on the splash screen after trying to restart your phone after installing a 4.3 ROM.
My steps were (and I take no credit for this, I can't remember who had said to do this and I wasn't logged in so I couldn't click the thank you button):
*Note* If you were already on the Stock 4.3 ROM you do not want to flash the 4.0.4, 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 Stock ROM since you will brick your phone. The Stock ROM contains the Bootloader which should never be downgraded. Fyi: the Bootloader is not the Baseband, the Baseband is just what Modem you're using.
1. Use Odin to flash the latest stock ROM
2. Enter the stock recovery and do a factory reset and clear the cache (I did both twice just to make sure)
3. Use Odin to flash the stock rooted ROM.
4. Enter the stock recovery and do a factory reset and clear the cache. (This might not be necessary but I did anyways just to make sure)
5. Use Odin to flash a custom recovery (TWRP 2.6.0.0 was the newest recovery when I did this last week)
6. Enter the custom recovery and wipe everything, then flash whatever 4.3 based ROM and then flash GApps if you want.
*Note* It seemed like the phone was hanging on the splash screen after either the initial boot or the first restart (I can't remember which, it's been a week) but it did boot and reboot fine.
I hope this helps out some people since I found it to be quite irritating that I could install a 4.3 ROM and set everything up but when I went to restart it would hang at the splash screen (going into the recovery and clearing the cache/dalvik cache wasn't helping).
Are you basically saying to revert back to stock settings and redo the entire root process again?

Yeah, from what I had read that seemed to be necessary since I had used Odin to update the bootloader (MF1 since my phone is the M variant) by itself when the newest Stock ROM had come out a while ago. I still flashed the newest Stock ROM (same MF1 bootloader for the M variant) but the first time I did it I forgot to enter the Stock Recovery to do a Factory Reset and Clear the Cache and ended up stuck on the splash screen of a 4.3 ROM after flashing a custom recovery. So I needed to reflash back to stock and start over.
Going into the Stock Recovery and doing a Factory Reset and Clearing Cache is necessary and doesn't take much time at all so you may as well do it just to be sure. I also recommend backing up your IMEI if you haven't done it yet.

Exactly what I ended up doing after nothing else was working. After getting it hanging the first time, even flashing 4.2 roms was giving me boot issues. After reverting back to stock and reflashing I'm now running the 9/1 Pac nightly and the 8/31 kt747 kernel.
I'm probably 10+ reboots in without issue and I flashed the kernel separately!

I'm glad to hear that this seems to be the proper fix. That's odd that you were having trouble with 4.2 ROMs, but then again I'd been running 4.2 ROMs on my phone since they first started rolling out. It's kind of annoying that everyone's S3 seems to be slightly different then the next.
Yeah this was a weird one all right. Just glad this post had a solution

glad i found this otherwise my first noob post would have truly been a noob move. Thanks wouldn't have guessed that fix for a few days at least.
verified it works. but it did require some weird time dealing with a bootloop issue on stock recoveries. had to find a .tar version of CWM to flash via odin for the final result.
Still Stuck at Splash Screen after trying to upgrade to 4.3
Background:
I had been running task's rom since 4.1.x. Upgraded to 4.2 with not problems and I kept the rom current. Tried to upgrade to 4.3 and that is where the problems started. It appeared to work, saw that Google was updating a number of apps but then then I kept getting error messages regarding various about various processes stopping unexpectedly. Rebooted the phone and it came up with Task's kernel splash screen where it remains frozen.
I can get into TWRP (v2.3.3.1) recovery and into Download mode.
I have tried wiping Cache and Dalvik Cache
I have wiped System
I have done a Factory Reset
I have Formatted Data
I have used Odin twice to get back to stock (I747UCDLK3) and both times it says "passed."
When I try to reboot it, however, it comes back to Task's Kernel splash screen (I do not see the Samsung screen)
Any help or suggestions would be great.
UPDATED: Found an older update from April and was able to restore it. Still wondering why 4.3 wouldn't take.
This Works
I was skeptical, but this actually works! Now running Task's 4.3 on my bell i747m without any problems!
Thanks for the tip OP :good:

Tried reflashing stock with root but didn't work... i'll try your way, see if that works
Gonna try this tonight!!!
Thanks!
I posted in the CM thread about this, but thought I would pass it along.. I didn't have to go back to stock non-rooted. What I did:
I odin'd Mr. Robinson's LK3 rooted
Factory reset from the 3e recovery
Rebooted
Odin'd twrp
Restored nandroid of CM
Good to go.
Solved
Thanks, also works for i727 skyrocket

If you were already on the Stock 4.3 ROM you do not want to flash the 4.0.4, 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 Stock ROM since you will brick your phone.
I'll add a note to the OP about not attempting to downgrade to an older Stock ROM though.

When I had done this back in August, I flashed the Rogers 4.1.2 Stock ROM since that was the latest stock firmware at the time and I have a Canadian S3.
If you had already flashed or been on the Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM, I'd recommend reflashing the latest Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM and following the instructions in the OP. Just make sure that you don't attempt to flash an older version of the Stock ROM that you were already on since you will brick your phone. The Stock ROM contains the bootloader and that cannot be downgraded. I don't have an American S3 since I'm Canadian so I don't know which 4.3 bootloader is the newest although I'm sure a quick search would answer that for you.

There is no latest Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM right now to reflash if you're already on the Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM. We cannot keep telling people this. If so, tell us how, because no one has, as of yet.
I've seen entirely too many posts telling people who are having trouble or phone is soft bricked on the Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM to flash or Odin back to stock. Then when asked how, the discussion ends.
That's also one of the reasons why I refuse to upgrade to 4.3 right now. At least I can still Odin back to stock as an option if something does goes wrong, but who am I to tell anyone to stay away from the latest toy, I mean update?

I'm sorry that I'm unable to help. As I had mentioned I have a Canadian Rogers phone (since I'm in Canada) so I don't know what's going on with the AT&T Stock 4.3 ROMs other then the fact that lots of people are having problems.
If you never flashed or did an OTA update to 4.3 then I'd suggest flashing the Stock 4.1.2 ROM. That or try what Ozark_8125 did since it saves you a couple steps (just make sure that LK3 isn't an older ROM than the one you were on).
If you're unsure what bootloader is currently on your phone and your phone is rooted I'd highly recommend downloading one of the many Root Check apps from the Play Store to verify which bootloader you're currently on.
*Note* I don't know which bootloader is for the 4.1.2 AT&T ROM nor do I know which bootloader came with the 4.3 ROMs. I'm sure a simple search would answer that for you.

[q] urgent!: Need to reset!

My friend has a Galaxy S4 on T-Mobile.
It has the Knox Counter set to 0x1.
It is currently on CM11, and I have TWRP installed, but apparently he cannot receive texts...
I tried restoring to the MDL firmware with Odin but it failed... I think because of the boot loader. I tried installing a 4.2.2 ROM but it was boot looping at the T-Mobile screen.
I have 1 hour tomorrow with him to fix it -- I just want to restore it to a Samsung Stock ROM (just downloaded the 4.4.2 Deodexed KitKat ROM).
How can I restore this phone to a 100% working Samsung Stock ROM? I don't care if it is a rooted ROM. I just need texts, calls, etc. 100% working and I need it to be a TouchWiz ROM. Thanks!
EDIT: I also found this list of firmwares: if I should try again with ODIN with the right firmware, which one should i be flashing?
If he just mainly wants stock and already has knox tripped just flash the newest odin image for the device.
You can use this one that Fenny posted.
http://www.cheatersedge.org/android/m919/M919UVUFNB4_M919TMBFNB4_TMB_FENNY_FIXED.zip
If you can still get into recovery you can flash the custom stock rom from Fenny or the Sickness. Both work really well.
The one from the sickness seems to have more of a stock feel though.

[HOW-TO] Preparing to flash an ND8 (kitkat) rom

Given that the first ND8 rom is out there now, I'd thought it would be a good idea to write up the steps you need to take BEFORE you can proceed to flashing your first ND8 rom.
Steps to take/verify before flashing an ND8 rom
Check your bootloader version. If you are not on the ND8 bootloader, any ND8 rom you flash will brick your device.
You can check your bootloader version by running the following command in a terminal emulator app/shell on your device. Adb shell will work as well if you know how to get that going.
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
If the version string it returns ends with "ND8" (no quotes of course), you are golden and you can skip to STEP 5. Otherwise continue to step 2.
Oh no. You ARE NOT on the ND8 firmware so you need to flash it before you can safely flash your first ND8 rom. Head over to THIS thread and flash the stock tar using ODIN (or a similar program) ON YOUR PC. Mobile ODIN will not just fail to flash it properly, but may leave you with an inoperable device aka brick. Don't try to take shortcuts. Following the instructions in the stock tar thread for how to flash the tar. NOTE: The restore tar MAY or MAY NOT wipe your internal storage so back up your information as necessary.
After flashing the stock tar, head back here and move on to step 3
Download a custom recovery tar (I highly recommend Philz touch, works for flashing kitkat roms well with the greatest consistency. Grab the latest tar HERE)
Flash the recovery tar with ODIN (or a similar computer program such as jodin, heimdall, etc) the same way you flashed the stock tar.
Now you can flash your rom. Yes, it is slightly tedious the first time, but once you are on the ND8 firmware you needn't repeat these steps the next time you want to flash an ND8 rom :good:

Devs and others, I encourage you to refer all ND8 flashing questions here to keep things centralized and have one set of info from one person versus multiple from multiple people.
Have fun flashing!
It definitely did wipe my internal data, so be sure to backup to your SD card or off-device. I fortunately had most of it backed up, but I think I lost some pictures.
Is there any way to upgrade to rooted stock ND8 without losing data? I'm rooted stock MK3 and I don't think I've ever installed the Knox boot loader. My boot loader came back as MD4.

The only chance for you is if you're rooted Odexed. You'd have to unroot, flash the stock Knox MK3 bootloader, kernel and recovery, and then accept the OTA.
There is NO way to run TouchWiz 4.4.2 without the Knox ND8 bootloader.
And if you don't know one way or the other, I'd say there's more of a chance you're DeOdexed than Odexed, which won't work at all for the OTA.

I've been itching to move to ND8. I'm currently on MD4, with no knox. With all this talk of knox, is it really that bad to have?
I'm on Ting, so I buy my phones outright and don't have phone insurance. I have my old SGS2 as my insurance. Its my understanding that the main issue with knox is if you downgrade your bootloader, it'll hard brick your device. Otherwise, you can still flash ROMs and what not through custom recovery just like before, regardless if its MD4 based or AOSP. I don't think i'll ever need to send my phone to Sprint/Samsung for warranty/repairs/ect. or downgrade bootloaders (never felt the need to). If I sell my phone, I'll just odin the stock ND8 and be done with it. Are there any other downsides to having a bootloader with knox?
So just to be clear if I follow those 2 steps above I then can flash any ND8 ROM, I got that, but will the phone still be rooted? Why do I ask? Well if you keep reading the ND8 Full Restore thread bilgerryan posted to flash CF Auto Root, then recovery, so I am just a little confused. Here.
Unfortunately the OP in the ND8 thread never updated the initial post to include all of the requests that followed, like listing the MD5 and attaching the root instructions that were posted. I am pretty sure I got the answer to my questions by reading the thread again, but I can see how things get confusing fast. So keeping root is a 3 step flash.

The MicroUSB port on my phone is destroyed and I can't afford a repair. I am rooted, with a custom recovery, on the MD4 bootloader, and would like to move up to an ND8 based KitKat ROM, but obviously the broken port is causing a bit of a problem.

Hi CNexus. I appreciate the guide. I seem to have run into a bit of an issue though.
I was on 4.1.2 (rooted Sprint L710) and decided to flash this update. I used Odin 3.09 and flashed the stock ND8 as per step 2. Everything went fine and it booted up without any problems so I went back into download mode and flashed the custom recovery you have linked in step 3. Odin gave me the big green "PASS" and the phone rebooted. Again no problems so I transferred the rooted stock rom (this one) to my SD card, turned the phone off and went to boot into recovery mode.
Here is where the problem is. When trying to boot into recovery, I get to the screen that says something like "booting recovery..." and then the screen just goes dark. Nothing happens as long as I hold down the buttons. As soon as I let them go the phone boots up like normal. :/
I repeated all of the steps again thinking maybe something (maybe me) messed up the first time. Same issue. Recovery won't load but the system boots just fine.
If you, or anyone else, have any ideas I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks.

To boot into recovery u have to let go of the volume up, home button, and power key all at once when the "booting recovery" screen appears. If you're still holding them down when the "booting recovery" screen disappears, you're phone is going to start up like normal.

You can flash any recovery from your custom recovery. The first one is just Odined because you can't flash that from stock recovery.
Old Philz had separate SPR and LTE builds. The SPR ones aren't built anymore and you can flash the latest LTE one just fine, that's what I use.

[Q]Need clarification for rooted rogers note 2, android 4.4

Hello, I recently just updated my Rogers SGH-i317M to 4.3, which then downloaded a system update which put it at 4.4. I was running Jedi X20, which is based on 4.1.2, when I first tried updating, I flashed the "4.3param_tz" file in odin, and was left with an error screen saying I need to recover using Kies, so I downloaded the official release, flashed via odin, and thats how I got to where I am now. I want to try the "Ditto Note 3" rom, "Sky Note Air 4.3", "Mean Bean" and "Beanstalk". My main question is, can I just start flashing these roms like I was before on 4.1.2, or do I need to use the specific kernel listed on their page? Before you needed a specific kernel to run a touchwiz rom or an aosp rom, so is it still the same? Or can I use my stock 4.4 kernel and try both aosp and tw roms now? If so could you point out the kernels I would need? And educate me on anything else I should know about before flashing 4.3 and 4.4 roms, (I'm not worried about warranty), this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time in reading this and helping me out, much appreciated!!
Regardless of where u are, I'd Odin to Rogers stock KK 4.4.2. Then Odin Twrp recovery, boot into twrp recovery and flash SU v.1.99. Finally choose your rom and flash away. This way you are on the lastest KK 4.4.2 Bootloader and KK Modem/Baseband.

I did all that except flash SU 1.99, so I tried flashing SKynote Air and it didnt work, upon restarting my phone it said no os is available. So I tried restoring from the backup I made of the official 4.4.2 Samsung rom in twrp, didn't work. Tried Odin, didn't work. Then I tried flashing the Skynote rom again and it worked. So I'm afraid of flashing any other roms now.

[Q] Returning to stock question

I need to return my phone to stock and it's running 4.4.2, I'm just wondering if I can flash a stock 4.3 rom onto it (L710VPUCMK3)
You can flash any ROM, but you can never Odin anything less than ND8 or you'll hard brick your phone because of Knox in ND8's bootloader.
This is assuming that by 4.4.2 you mean TouchWiz 4.4.2 (ND8), not AOSP/CM. If the latter, it depends on what the last stock ROM you either Odin'd or OTA'd.

Yup I'm on Touchwiz 4.4.2 ND8 basically what I'm trying to do is completely restore phone to stock, flash Moar, MK3 modem, and Phiilz touch recovery and root it. Any help or what order to flash those in?

I going to assume that you want to take phone back to stock AND THEN flash custom recovery and root?
If that's the case:
Flash the nd8 tar ball through ODIN. It will be a fresh install so you'll lose everything (I prefer it that way though)
Verify the phone is working with stock.
Flash the custom recovery ODIN (I recommend latest version of Philz, imho).
Download the zip of supersu (not the app) and the flash that through recovery. Rode warrior can tell you how to use reboot in Philz (didn't seem to work for me though and I'm just used to flashing skin recovery, so that's the way I do it.
Edit: forgot about MOAR. I would then flash moar from custom recovery after doing all the above...

You can't flash the MK3 modem once on ND8. Brick city may happen.
Seen that you wanted to do that.

You're exactly correct.
Now that you're on ND8, you can never downgrade the modem or bootloader.
