I finally got around to rooting and installing the updated, Knox-free TouchWiz MK5 ROM on my Galaxy S3 (Virgin Mobile), but I hit a problem that some others have seen, including on this post and several others where the phone will not connect to 3G nor 4G wireless and it has a constant "Preparing Network" notification on the taskbar. Trying to run the activation on the phone fails, and when I tried to manually update the PRL or Profile, it just says "Session already in progress, please try again later".
Since I'm fairly new to the board, I couldn't post a reply or question in the DEV threads, but hopefully the solution I had to take will be helpful to others.
I started from a Knox-free MD7 build on my S3 and just followed the root and then MK5 ROM update directions... all of that went cleanly.
The fix was to * Update the Modem to MK5 * as well!
After updating the modem software to match the ROM, a quick reboot later and the activation worked now and, after a couple of minutes (and maybe another reboot or two) it updated the PRL and Profile and both 3G and 4G LTE were working again! :victory:
Looking back now, though, I realize that I got carried away with playing with the new ROM after Step 7 of @jdsingle76 's directions and I failed to follow Step 8...

So...were you able to get it fixed, or are you asking a question? Just want to make sure you got what you needed.

My post started out as a question, but then as I was writing it and going back to link to some of the other questions and problems that people had reported, I ended up noticing the "Step 8 ... flash the MK5 modem" that I had overlooked in my zeal for playing with my new OS and getting all my apps restored.
So I ended up re-writing it a bit as -- here's how I fixed the constant "preparing network" -- since it wasn't originally apparent to me that this message & the fact that I couldn't activate meant that I did actually have problems with my 3G/4G data connection.
Thanks for your guide! (I may have another question about WiFi, but I'll post that as an actual question shortly...)

So I'm somewhat new to this whole ROMming thing. But I know enough to get by. I did a bunch of research and found Android Revolution HD to be my best option. And I thought the reviewer on YT said it was good to go on AT&T. So I did. And now I can't get my phone's sim to work (obviously). Is there any fix option for someone who isn't great at coding, etc? I can follow instructions to a T but I need this phone working. And I don't know what to do. I'm about to flash cleanROM and see if that fixes things, but I have little hope... Can anyone help me?
It replaced your modem with an N7100 modem. Flash the clean ROM(or other i317 specific ROM) and then the i317 modem without rebooting. If this still doesn't work I hope you used twrp to backup efs.

Oh, man. So if I do that do I have to change apn settings or anything or should it just work?
**Edit**
So luckily I had already tried flashing the original modem but still had Android Rev HD. But I deleted it off of my SD card before installing cleanROM (I put a kernel on there and I thought that I deleted it instead of the modem).
Anyways so I flashed CleanROM and it worked! I have internet! But I have 4G in my area and it's showing the H+ Symbol. Is that an error on my part? Maybe I used the wrong modem or something? Or does that mean 4G now? :S
Thank you for all of your help. I appreciate it more than you'll probably ever realize, haha.

H+ is 4G
4G is LTE
There are a few other posts kicking around that explain why. Glad you got yours back up and running though.
Okay. I knew that H+ is "4G" because my last phone was an Inspire 4G... Not LTE. But that means the LTE isn't working anymore? Any idea why that could be? I just figured it might be like it was explained in other posts that the symbol just changed or something. Hmmph.. :/. And thanks. My heart attack is over!
*Edit*
Also, would flashing the firmware available from the "One stop shop" post get me LTE back? I tried making a new APN to no avail.

Did you flash the Android Revolution from the international forum or from the ATT Ports thread?
I got it from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1925402
I just downloaded CleanRom in a hurry just to get an AT&T rom on the device. I'm thinking if I try another rom that goes deeper into network stuff like Jedix6 (the one from the AT&T development forum haha) that it might fix the problem. I tried making a new APN and it didn't fix it. But I didn't even know they had a port to the AT&T note 2? *eyes light up*
Errors when using flashed Android Rev. HD
I flashed Android Revolution HD 10 on to my note 2 with at&t and get this weird error messages, 3 of them and will come back after 4 seconds of all of them being closed out and it if very slow. The first pops up as soon after it is unlocked and says: "Error, email not working" then it says: "Unfortunatly, the process android.process.acore has stopped" and finally: "Unfortunately, Software update has stopped". Anyone know how to fix this?

There's a guide on how to port any n7100 Rom in the development section. Read over it and delete/replace any of the necessary files.

I was playing around with the nightly build of CM10.1, and my radio stopped working. I flashed what I thought was the stock ROM back with Odin, but then I started receiving an, "Insert SIM Card" message whenever I tried to enable Mobile Data. So I flashed another one I found online. Still, with no luck (though the error was gone), I tried some radios. A dozen radios later, and I can get 3G data -- but still no calls or texts. I've been updating the PRL non-stop, still no luck (except when I'm roaming.)
I'm guessing the problem has to do with the many many files I have in /system/etc/firmware
Is there anyway I can get my radio back to stock?
Thanks!
you need a full odin flash with repartition. do not do this till you know for sure you have the right files to use. you can screw **** up with odin pretty damn quick. lemme search and ill see if i can find the right stuff for you.
EDIT:
I am downloading the files you will need to flash in odin. I want to see that they are indeed the correct ones for you to use. If you need help i can remote connect to your pc and help you out.

dont worry youre not dumb. though i may not be able to help you, the person above me hopefully will.
Quick answer from my own findings, the original stock ROM had a bug that doesn't allow it to see the SIM properly, but if you patch it (settings, update - or something like that), it will fix it (there will likely be a few rounds of updates).

The ROMs at Sumsung-Updates.com seem to be trustworthy. Are they?
Anyway, I finally got the issued resolved. It wasn't a radio problem that was blocking me, it was a badly linked Google Voice account. Sprint killed it, and now everything's OK (though I signed up again ^_^)

I had the same problem with the sim card thing...linked it to my wifi and it downloaded like 15 updates and then finally started working normally...probably incorrect stock rom or seriously old...got the one from samsung-updates and that works flawlessly
Whenever I flash cm 10.2 cm 11 any rom at all I face the problem of no internet. So I go back to stock. I have my baseband, build # important stuff like that. I always have to take out my assert lines. So when I flash any rom the fine line will say;
;Mount
or something like that I delete all the assert lines and I was told to keep assert lines but just change them to my baseband and stuff. Any help would be appreciated. & btw the problem is it says Mobile State: Disconnected. But I'm in service too.
I have the same problem. Been searching for a while and trying different fixes, but doesn't seem to be working. I'm on ATT galaxy S3, tho. If someone's got a working ATT S3 and let me know exactly what ROM, gapp, modem, etc they used, would much appreciate it.

More info is needed, such as carrier. I'm guessing either Virgin Mobile or Boost if you need to remove asserts on any of the pre-unified builds (this would hold true for any ROM that has switched to d2lte from d2spr). If that is the case, then you don't have the correct APN's configured. Also, it usually doesn't hurt to be running the most current modem (MK3 for Sprint, MK5 for VM/Boost). Again, the more info the better, then people don't have to play Twenty Questions in order to get to the heart of the matter.
This may work...
So, after trying countless options that i found on this site, and after dozens of flashing roms, modems, kernels, booloaders, restores, etc... turns out that i was doing everything right and there was nothing wrong with the install or the phone itself. After contacting my carrier (PTEL Mobile) for the third time, (first time they told me they had an outage, second time they told me to set the APN setting correctly - neither of which was incorrect on my end or the cause), they said they will try RESETting the DATA on their end. And guess what - that worked.
If you think you did everything correctly but still not getting data, i suggest you make your provider to do the same, or at least pry them as much as you can about your problem and what they can do about it. I wasted to much time and effort (my poor phone) on this and the solution was simple, and not my fault. Hope this helps others.

Hiya, I'm currently having the same problem as the OP. Mobile state disconnected but it says I am in service. Using latest version of Philz recovery and I flashed the most recent nightly of the Cyanogenmod 11 -4.4.2 KitKat (April 5th, 2014).Carrier is Virgin Mobile, using Samsung Galaxy SIII SPH-L710. PRL is most recent one 33030 and modem is MK5. I did however, flash the rom without deleting the assert lines, since I did not know I had to delete some assert lines. Any help with this? Thanks.

Deleting asserts is only for d2spr specific builds, that doesn't apply to d2lte builds (hence the reference to "pre-unified builds" in my first post). Your issue is most likely also related to APN's. However, there are also known data issues on a lot of the latest CM nightlies, and also on the ROM's that rely heavily on CM as a code source. I would strongly recommend reading the last several pages of the thread for any ROM that falls into this category in order to see what other users are reporting along these lines.
CM11 No Mobile Network
Hey guys,
Noob here. I'm running CM11-20140428-NIGHTLY-jflte on a Galaxy S4 GT-i9507(international, optus) but bootscreen now says 9505(not sure if that's important).
I've had Mobile Network State: Disconnected for the last three nightlies. On CM11 M3 it was working all good, but now no luck.
So I've tried a few things and I've come to the point where I'm going to try the factory reset then reflash CM11 and fingers crossed it will work.
Can anyone talk me through the proper procedure for this? I've made a full backup on my external SD using CWM 6.0.4.7 and transferred it to
computer just in case. So would anyone be awesome enough to take me through it step by step.
Cheers,
hhmmm

Stock no APN settings at all
I have looked everywhere and found nothing for the last 3 weeks. I have a stock, sprint S3 on straight talk (my son's phone) it will not get 4g lte data what so ever. My phone is the exact same phone, and it does get 4g lte data. I tried all the basics ##72786# data on off check airplane mode...nothing. Mobile network state is "disconnected". So I opened data ##3282# to compare apn settings with my phone. I made sure everything matched, and when I get to "LTE APN Settings" I open it up, and nothing is there except APNs nothing, blank. Also missing is "Dial Up Networking" that option does not exist on my son's phone. He updated to kitkat (uggh) but the problem was present before that. Checked the phone, and it is not rooted. Funny thing is the phone updates with 4g lte running after dialing ##72786#, but that goes away after it completes. Texting works, but no mms (pictures etc.) and if I set it to cdma only it gets 3g, otherwise no data at all. Anybody?
Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with intermittent data drops, I am using an SGH-I747, that is rooted with CF-AutoRoot, with TWRP and CM 12.1 update from 4/28 installed (recently updated to the 8/22 nightly). I have the I747UCUEMJB modem installed and. My carrier is T-Mobile and I have a a SIM card installed that is only 4 months old, of course T-Mobile support won't even discuss anything with me other than "if you purchase a phone from us you shouldn't have this issue". Give me a break T-Mobile, lol. I am in the Tampa, FL area so I doubt it's a coverage issue, though not out of the question.
I have been getting several times a day where my cell connection completely drops out and the DBM drops to zero, when this occurs it lasts for about 10-20 seconds and on occasion I have to reboot the phone. I switch my data off when I'm not using it and this issue tends to occur about 3 minutes give or take after switching it back on, also it's more frequent when I'm using mobile data for apps. Other times whether or not I'm using mobile data or not I periodically get issues with text messaging where a text just "spins" and eventually fails to send, only rebooting fixes it, this happens at least once a day.
If I attempt to "search for networks" to try regain LTE it never is able to successfully find networks, I can only choose from a slew of what seems to be pre-installed ones ( the T-Mobile ipv6 or regular T-Mobile choice has been working ok). If I enter an unlock code I get a message saying "operation failed". Aside from this, I love this phone and this ROM.
Any Ideas folks?
Thanks.
You may be faced with having to update your bootloader and modem to at least NE4 to get the phone to work consistently with CM12.1, or any LP ROM. If you update to NE4 you may want to go all of the way, NE4 to NJ1 to NJ2.
Hi there, thanks for the response. I think it's a JB bootloader and radio I'm running on this, I've searched several threads and so far the only ones I can find is the ones I have currently loaded or older ones. Do you happen to know where I could download the NE4, NJ1, or NJ2 from off hand?
Thanks again for the help.

I picked up a Sprint prepaid HTC 816 recently and decided to flash this rom below
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL][CM12.1][5.1.1][VirginMobileUS][A5][single sim][1/1/2016 security]
That one
It installed great, had everything everything working after I added my Sprint APN settings. The phone still displayed it as Virgin Mobile and only 3g seemed to be working. But I was making and receiving calls, text messages and had mobile data.
Fast forward a couple of hours, I installed a custom theme from the Play store, rebooted and ever since then I lost the ability to pickup a network signal and access my APN settings.
If I re-seat the sim and toggle airplane mode it will pickup a network signal and I can regain apn setting access again but it drops within minutes.
Ive reflashed the rom, wiped everything reflashed again, same thing. Any ideas on what has happened?
Thanks and appreciate your time!

Are these the APN codes you used(poster corrected a mistake in green text)? Looks like there is a different APN for prepaid /postpaid.
http://androidforums.com/threads/working-sprint-prepaid-apn-settings.920752/
I indeed use the apn settings in the green from that post. They were working fine until I had a reboot. Then everything went to ****. It wont even let me access the apn settings and when I can its briefly and then I lose signal and apn access.

I had an issue with something on my Virgin mobile 816 a5_chl a while back and a member @wxppro was very knowledgeable about APN settings and their intricacies. He had a MVNO 816 at the time with an APN issue and I bet he could help you with this as that was my best suggestion for a fix and it didn't help you.
See if you can direct him here to this forum so that if he can help out the info is here to help others as well. Good luck.
Not sure how much I can help. APN is a tricky business. If your APN settings disappear after some time, it is generally because the cellular network the phone connects to does not match the APN's MCC/MNC numbers. Or it could be the phone is in 3G mode (CDMA EvDo mode).
You can try these things:
Switch network types, from LTE to 3G, wait a minute, and then back to LTE. APNs do not show up in 3G mode. They only show up in LTE (or global) mode.
When you have the APNs show up, check the parameters are correct, you can do a "Restore to default" and then add the new one following that post.
Hope this helps.
I'm having a similar issue as well (except on virgin mobile)
A month ago I flashed squid's version of CM 13 on my phone and everything was fine for a few days, until I completely lost LTE and access to APNs. I reverted to stock and still was unable to get LTE, although I could get a shaky 3g connection if I changed the network mode to CDMA only. I called virgin mobile and they walked me through the troubleshooting steps and eventually determined it was a network outage (even though two desires in my house belonging to other family members had LTE). I called again after they verified that the network was working again and they were still unable to fix the issue.
Recently, a friend upgraded from a desire to a different phone on a different network, and gave me his old phone. I plugged in my sim card and activated this new phone and I got LTE. Figuring everything was good, I decided to flash squid's ROM once again. The same issue happened, I got LTE for a day or two until it cut out service again. No access to APNs, not even any service in stock or on the official build of CM12 with the APN fix (I can't access APNs there either). I'm out of ideas and would appreciate if anyone had any input on my issues.

I have this same phone a5_chl Virgin Mobile. Did you factory reset your device before flashing back to your stock rom? The other thing is and this is just my opinion not a statement of fact or a knock on the wonderful Bigsupersquid but that 13 CM ROM is nowhere close to being stable enough for me to risk flashing it to my daily driver phone. Just read all the posts and his candid responses. You were basically a beta tester .
I'm not an expert in APN's but if you can't get that fixed your last resort might have to be wiping your system and then flashing or running the executable RUU (rom utility upgrade) file found for our device on HTC/downloads . This is a last resort option and wiping your system will remove your existing firmware so have the correct RUU for your phone downloaded to your computer before attempting a wipe. If it's an exe, which I believe the U.S. Virgin Mobile one is ,you will hook up your phone fully charged in fastboot mode then from your computer run the exe RUU like any other exe executable program and wait. It will reformat all partitions and reinstall pure stock ROM. Hope someone else had an easier fix for your data issues and good luck.
EDIT: you will need your stock recovery flashed back and a relocked bootloader before flashing the RUU but I've read that some have flashed their RUU over a custom recovery with a locked bootloader and it wrote over the custom recovery with the stock recovery. I have never personally tried this just the first way I mentioned and that worked for me.

I did try factory resetting and I am on stock after flashing the RUU. It makes no sense as the RUU should have reset everything. That perplexes me the most

OK then you did get back to stock not from a nandroid backup but from flashing or running exe stock RUU? If that's the case then it replaced everything that might have been changed and your issues shouldn't be related to any APN changes. You also removed and reinserted your sim card as I believe, correct?
EDIT: that perplexes me as well my friend!

I did try factory resetting and I am on stock after flashing the RUU. It makes no sense as the RUU should have reset everything. That perplexes me the most

i posted about my lte issues i had for nearly two weeks, running stock just to verify the data service problem wasn't my rom...
i had to install stock recovery, relock bootloader, download the ruu.exe from htc and extract the .img file in Wine, then rename it onto the sdcard and reboot into hboot so it'd flash. neither Wine nor virtualbox xp talk correctly to any of my phones over usb. and i wasn't about to native install Windoze.
factory reset stock didn't fix it, even trying activation, update profile, etc.
i learned i could get 3g data but switching to lte instead of cdma shut down data entirely.
virgin eventually directly escalated me to tier 2 tech support in my last call, they sent a couple service programming pushes to the phone that got my lte back online.
i tried the various service programming menu options repeatedly, with no results but the prl updated once; but the trigger to fix my lte seemed to come from upstream.
i tried various apns, in cm12, cm13, and stock lollipop. rebuilt init_a5.cpp with different mccmnc and adjusted apns. i really tried most tricks in the book plus a few more.
as far as alpha testing goes, at this point I'm just sharing something cool... i always enjoyed flashing latest greatest on my ov way before i was building.
not too many actual logs to really bug report for either rom.

Some of that was over my head but happily not all of it. Basically what your saying is the fix needs to come from the carrier and it's a reset issue on their end not a custom rom issue? By the way I'm a big fan of your work. Hell I might be on one of your older ROMs right now I've flashed so many I forget. Thanks for the education.

The first time it happened, I flashed back to stock using the RUU.exe. I tried again but the second time I took out the SIM card before running the program, I still can't get LTE.

It does sound a lot like a carrier/account issue as I managed to kill 2 different 816s. I don't think it's the SIM card itself because I put it into a 3rd phone and got LTE, although since it was someone else's phone, I didn' t bother activating it.
I guess you got lucky with support, I tried talking to them and they tried the same thing with me. Although all I got was excuses saying they're logging a ticket with their "network engineers" and to call back in a few days. This continued on for a few weeks until they determined I needed a new phone, which I was also bounced around for another few weeks (I still don't have it).
I'm just completely lost now. I'm almost certain it's my account and it needs to be reset, but I can't get a tech who can help me. How did you manage to get someone in tier 2?

This is starting to scare me as well because I'm thinking of going back to stock once Marshmallow gets pushed to our phone to get my beats drivers back and this is making me think twice. Sorry your having so much trouble.

seemed that way.
i took radio logs before and after it worked, and worked only on 3g, and it looked to me like the sim card responded differently to the ril after things were running right again.
mine might've been a special case, though, it came from ebay with no sim, and virgin had to go to a little effort to get it programmed when i installed the sim initially.
they also claimed for several days that the local Sprint tower was down for lte service.

tier 2 takes luck, time, many calls, and eventually you learn the answers to all the questions tier 1 outsourced from India asks so you can feed it to them so fast they want to shuffle you along. takes a couple of weeks to over a month to get to tier 2 and sometimes they have to be involved multiple times as well.
I've been dealing with virgin since 2009... replaced only two phones, eventually got the rest of the issues hammered out with persistence.
for a little while, twice, i had direct toll free numbers to American tier two even because my issues were so hard to solve. it didn't take too long for those numbers to be disconnected, though.
