I have a rooted stock 4.4.2 Nexus 7, and I'm encountering a really weird problem where there's a persistent high-pitched whining noise that seems to come out of the speakers whenever it's plugged into a wall charger. I tried the stock charger + cable that came with my device as well as 2 other third-party chargers all with the same results. Meanwhile, charging it via USB connected to my computer doesn't produce that sound at all.
Does anyone know if there are any tweaks or settings that could be causing this? I looked in the FAQ, and I only see a giant thread about static while at low volumes, but this looks to be a completely separate problem since it's unrelated to volume settings & it happens when I have no sound playing at all. Googling this returns a bunch of results with people's chargers making noises, but not the Nexus 7 itself.
If anyone else has had this problem and can offer any insight, that'd be appreciated. It's not the biggest deal in the world, since I just have to make sure I'm not in the same room when it's charging so I don't get annoyed, but if I can fix it, that'd be great.

Maybe a ground loop. Can you ground your tablet and see if that helps. Just a theory at the moment.

Sorry for the dumb question, but to ground it, just have it touching metal?
Also, a new piece of information: I found that the noise only happens when the tablet is fully charged (100%) and still plugged in, so it happened last night while I left it in to charge after going out. I'll have to wait for it to fully charge again before I can test this theory today.

Not an extra ground, isolate the ground. Make sure the tablet and charging brick are grounded well. Is your outlet/house grounded well? Can you use an outlet with nothing else plugged into that line?
You say this only happens when fully charged and not until? I wonder if there is a problem with the battery perhaps over charging. Have you switch charging bricks? Switched cords? Does the charging brick get warm? How about the back of the tablet?
Edit: Are you using the official cord and charging brick? That can make a difference. If not what are the specks of the brick you are using?

Another new piece of information discovered today: The high-pitched whine only happens when the battery is 100% AND when the screen is on. When the screen is off, everything is fine.
So far I have tried:
1. Directly plugging into the outlet the stock Nexus 7 charging brick & cord.
2. Using the following bricks: Stock charger, Anker 40W 5-port USB charger, Amazon Kindle charger, Moto G stock charger. I've also tried all the cables that came with these devices as well as any other microUSB cables I've got lying around the house.
3. My device is not hot at all, and neither are the chargers.
Thanks a lot for your help so far! Looks like what I need to do is to turn the screen off to charge my device, and then unplug it when I want to turn the screen on & use it.

So when the unresponsive screen when grounded issue came about, I didn't really notice the problem much myself. However, recently, and I'm not sure when this started, the screen has become horribly unresponsive when charging any time! Doesn't matter if it's on desk, in my hand, stock charger, 3rd party charger, etc., if it's charging at all, the touch screen only accepts half or less of my inputs, making typing impossible. Is this due to the last software update? Anyone else experience this issue? I would exchange the phone, but not if it's not going to help anything.
this happens to me when i use my cheap ebay charger
The fps lifting kernels fix this.
+1 for symtoms seen when using a wonky charger/cable.
+1 due to cheap charger - anyone know why this happens? is the OEM usb cable different spec from the cheap ones?
Hate to beat a dead horse, but the same happens when I plug my phone into the charger I got from eBay. Kind of disappointing, considering that I would otherwise be able to charge two batteries at the same time.
I notice this issue with the stock charger.
I believe the issue was when its not grounded..
Being plugged in is just about the most grounded your phone can get.
That's not the problem.
Starting to do it to me also now.
Just to be clear, this happens to me with the STOCK charger.

I'm having the same issue. i just chocked it up to the new kernel.
one thing i did notice is it seems to be intermittent. Yesterday night, it worked fine. this morning(conveniently when my alarm went off) i could NOT get the dismiss thingy to slide down.
Anyone else experiencing this? I do think it got worse after last software update. Would be nice if the next one improved things.
I emailed support, they did not say anything about it being a known issue, and suggested a factory reset. If that doesn't help, they recommended using my warranty. Would like to hear from more people before going through with the reset.
It happens to me when charging via outlet. Charging via USB connected to computer does not produce the issue.
I think it has to do with grounding.
Same thing happens to me! I noticed it with my aftermarket wall charger.
Bringing this back up, happens to me with a Stock charger.
Is it really the kernel? :\
@Person who said charging is the most grounded, the stock charger is not grounded ( in AU anyway ) and therefore it is the LEAST grounded.
ive noticed this happening over the past month or so. i've got to admit i've only really noticed this when its plugged into a usb cord i got off ebay. relieving to think it might only be an issue with it being a cheap cable and not the phone but i'll verify tonight with the stock cable.
I've been plagued by this problem for weeks and just discovered that it only happens when charging. I use the stock charging cable and wall adapter. I'm very, very happy to know what the problem is. I'm going to start testing this at various locations.
EDIT: I've tried this on both the wall adapter at work and on my work computer's usb. Same problem, though it seems worse when plugged into the wall outlet.
The touchscreen is fine on my sprint brand car charger and on the usb charger on my laptop. However, it starts missing taps when I plug my usb cable into my usb car charger. I'm going to best buy tonight to buy a different charger and see if that helps.

I have these issues as well with the stock charger and cable regardless of which kernel I use.
This isn't a problem but more of just a general question. So does anyone else experience your phone kinda lagging or having screen sensitivity issues (have to press hard on screen to scroll) while having the phone charge? This is like a 50/50 thing sometimes it does this sometimes not. So post your experiences with this

Yes indeed. In my case, it's caused by my HTC USB cable that came with the phone. When I use the charger from my old LG ENV3, i never get that problem at all. As soon as I switch to the HTC cable, it's nearly un-usable whilst plugged in. It's odd, because the HTC cable works fine for charging and transferring data, so I don't know, but there's something wonky with it.
Hmm interesting

Nope, you're not. It can certainly become rather annoying if you're trying to use your phone while it's charging.
Yea, using swype is IMPOSSIBLE when plugged in.
I never used to have this problem before, so I wonder if this is something that comes with age of the phone. I've run all kinds of roms/kernels and never had this issue until maybe a month ago. But I think I've successfully narrowed it down.
You need a charger that outputs 5v at 1000mA. Any more or less and you'll get the wonky response. I have an 800mA and a 1.5A charger at 5v and I get the laggy response. And I took it a step further and noticed that I get maximum charging speed (regardless of kernel, I've tried stock and custom/SBC kernels) with a 28/24 AWG or 24/24 AWG micro USB cable. If you still rock the stock HTC charger/cable combo you should be golden.

i don't think its from age of the phone because i just got my phone in december (hw 0004) and i am still using the stock htc charger/cable. so idk its a mystery. nice work finding all that out tho its good to know that i am not the only person who experiences this haha.
I only get the problem when I'm plugged into A/C power, but not when I'm plugged into the D/C car charger... I think it has something to do with how the outlet is grounded. Maybe the touchscreen gets confused by getting grounded through the charging port rather than through your body. I'm basically making this up based on hazy memories from an E&M class I took about 8 years ago, but I think it's close. Anybody with any actual knowledge care to correct me?
Hi All -
On the whole i am very happy with the G Nex. One thing is annoying me though. When plugged into the mains on charge the plug itself emits a strange, high pitch noise. It sounds like some form of interference. I have had this before on a cheap replacement ipod charger.
As i charge the phone next to my bed it really is a pain.
I have tried different plug sockets, and it is plugged directly into the mains.
Anyone else notice this, or can advise?
Thanks
Coil whine.
Hotglue the coil or get a new one.
Thanks for the quick reply.
So this is a fault that needs a replacement charger? Im not going to start taking things apart myself....

The problem is that not many consider it an actual fault, as it does infact not impair it's functionality.
But yeah, maybe they can offer you another charger for free, if not you can always just use another USB-charger.
I have just tried my desire hd charger and the same thing happens when plugging in the galaxy nexus.
I again tried it in different sockets just to be sure. I even plugged in the desire hd to make sure i wasnt going mad....

The issue can be related to the load, so even a different phone may change the results in whether or not the whining appears, and can even make other chargers "whine".
Bascially it has to do with the resonance produced by the inductor coil, depending on the load, it will reach a state where it can vibrate, producing said whine.
Did you try your Desire HD in the Nexus Charger?
I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus and it won't charge while it's on,but when I turn it off it charges. Also It will charge while powered on when its connected to my VZW branded car charger. Anyone know why this is?
In settings>battery does it show charging(USB) or charging(AC)?

Are you using the stock USB cable and charger?
Not all USB cables or chargers are made the same.
I bought one micro usb cable that looked high quality but didn't charge at all when in use and charged very slowly when not in use.

Wrong place, you need to check in: Settings > About Phone > Status
Might it be a faulty USB cable? Have you tried with a different cable/charger?

Yeah I've tried two different cables. Haven't tried the stock one since I don't have it.
Although not all cables can carry data, I thought any cable should be able to charge?

Try on a different computer, maybe your computers USB ports are malfunctioning or the GNex overloads them when the phone is on?
Not sure what the problem is. I've tried two dfferent computers usb ports several different outlets and two different cables. The only time it truly charges is when I have it hooked up to my car charger
I'm having a similar problem with the GSM version. I had the original Galaxy S and had to replace it because over time it completely stopped charging no matter what cable I used. Is this an issue with Samsung phones? Now My Galaxy Nexus seems to only charge with certain cables and some cables that it originally worked with no longer charge it. I've tested the cables with other devices and they seem to work. I'm wondering if I should begin the lengthy process of shipping it off to the UK for warranty service. Anyone have a link to a tutorial on how to flash everything back to stock and relock the bootloader?

Resolution?
So today my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) has started doing the same as the OP. I did not charge at all last night on the charger. I turned it off. Took it downstairs to another charger and plugged it in and noticed that it was charging. I figured it just needed a reboot. I turned it back on and left if on the second charger and it quit charging. Now I've moved to a third charger and the same thing is happening....no charge except while turned off.
I don't think I have done anything to harm the phone--the only thing I've ever done to it is swap the battery to the larger version. I'll try to switch the battery back to the OEM when I get home from work to see if that makes a difference. In the mean time, does anyone have any ideas on this? The phone is only ~6 months old, would I be wrong to say that the warranty would take care of this? Thanks.

My SGS2 did this as well. I had to tweak the USB connector on my phone. I bent it slightly toward the screen and all was well, never had to mess with it again.

This is true, the outer pins on a USB are for charging, positive and negative. The inner two are data in, data out. At the very least, a cable will always have positive and negative, so all cables will charge unless there's a break in either positive or negative or both. If there's a break in data in or out, it should still charge but it won't communicate with a PC or something like that.
The issue OP is talking about sounds rom or kernel related. Nandroid > Try something else. Hope for the best.
I've noticed that on 4.1 my USB charging worked fine. Now that I am on 4.1.1 it still charges over USB, but at a decreased rate. In other words, before 4.1.1 it easily charged over night and now it will only charge to about 80%. Does anyone have any ideas why that might be?

Having the exact same problem, won't charge with the original adapter as well as spare adapters, also wont charge through USB. Car charger is the only thing charging it right now.
Explain further?
Could you explain further what you mean by "bent slightly toward the screen?" are you talking on the phone or on the cord? If on the cord, then the whole metal connector? Or just something inside.
Hi all,
I hope someone can shed a light on this matter.
I bought a Samsung Wireless Charging pad a while ago, hoping to use with my Nexus 5 and my Nexus 7 2013.
However, even tho it works fine with my Nexus 5, it doesn't seem to charge my Nexus 7 when it's powered on (no notification). But it seems to charge it when powered off (dim battery display saying that it's charging).
the rate is about 25% / 30% each hour, so I end up switching it off and leaving it overnight.
Since it's a mini pad, it crossed my mind that doesn't have enough output to charge it while on ( ? ) ? Or the power is the same on most Wireless Chargers?
Keep in mind it does charge my nexus 5, either on or off. It does charge my nexus 7, but only when it's off.
Someone can explain this?
Thanks a lot for your attention and any help.
Cheers!
You need to check the output rating to see what it is supposed to be outputting, and post it back here.
I couldn't get the output rating from the device itself, I only got Input (5.3V ---- 2.0A),
But I found it using the model ID,
https://www.mobilesupplies.nl/samsung-qi-wireless-s-charger-pad-blauw-ep-pg900ile.html
I got 1A / 1000mAh.
@SwoRNLeaDejZ, can you help me?

Alright, so the 1A output is MORE than enough to charge efficiently (I was nervous you might have a 500 mAh device, which for my S4, doesn't seem like a strong enough current). I would suggest using a different outlet, different USB cable, etc. to truly rule out anything else that might be causing the issue.

I did, besides using different USB cables, tried different sockets, but nothing seems to solve it.
I though it could be relared to the fact it's a "mini" pad instead of a normal sized one? Although it does charge when the tablet is off, so I haven't got an idea of what could cause this. I'm really in the dark about why this thing doesn't charge when powered on.
Thanks for your reply mate
PS - Even tho there's no indication of the tablet charging (the battery icon doesn't charge, no notification, the energy is still consumed) the pad does have a green light tho. So the charger says it's charging but there's no sign of it on the tablet.

Crossed my mind too, if I haven't tried official factory images and a bunch of roms :b
Is there any known app to determine the voltage input? If the battery is receiving any charge?
