Just wondering - there seems to be across various threads hints at reasons not too, such as iffy GPS & battery performance hit.
Anything I should be aware of before I try ( just made a Goldard )
If you screw up the Apps2SD installation, you can kiss your USB functionality goodbye. It's less concerning because it's affecting very few people, but it's more concerning because nobody really knows why it happens in the first place. They're still working on possible fixes.
I've experienced better battery life, myself.

Search! Read! Post new thread anyway? Sigh!!!
I came on the forum for a look around about 45 minutes ago, ever since I have been reading and reporting threads (as per recent mod request) that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Please search, read, learn instead, far more fruitful and doesn't damage the forum usability for everyone else.
Good thread. I learned something here.
Go easy on the OP.
It's not that easy to search and find the older threads because few people tag their threads. In this case he did fine the threads but perhaps he wants to know in the context of THIS phone? Also, this thingy evolves very fast so an updated info is probably warranted.
Sorry j-zeus if I was a little over zealous there. This was about the fifth thread I had come across. I'm sure you can appreciate the irony of stating in your OP that you had found other threads on the subject but that you had decided to start a new one anyway.
Anyway, I didn't mean to be rude or combative, I just wanted to point you in the right direction for future posts. It really does make life easier if the forum is well organized without multiple threads on the same subject.
Cheers.
One reason NOT to root now that I could think of:
Google IO is only few weeks from now (May 19-20), there they will most probably announce Froyo, Android 2.2.
It would be wise to wait what will come out.
APP2SD will be native if they include it in 2.2 (I [email protected]!).

No worries - I do know how to search and did. I find it somewhat over the top as it throws up 28 thousand snippets of information that you have to trawl through only to find it's out of date already - and for a non techie like me this leads to masses of confusion. I post the question to get the latest feedback, not stuff from 2 months ago ( also as posted it helps others too ).
1 reason is: it wipes your phone and you get a random other rom, which might have stuff missing you are used to.
sense for example is missing for sure.
This is the kind of thread where my sig really makes a lot of sense...

I agree the search facility is not the best on this forum and after searching for a few hours its easier to give up as i have normally lost the will to live by then.
and it's funny that there's an exact same thread right below this one.

Sense is only missing if you... pick a ROM that's missing Sense. That's a very silly and misleading thing to say.
The default rootedupdate.zip that's provided with the unlocking method is just the stock ROM with root; it still has Sense. Half the ROMs on XDA for the Desire still have Sense. Saying you lose Sense when you get root is just flat-out false.

Although this is now going off topic can I say I agree the search on here is ****. Plus, if people keep having a go at people for starting new threads then you will probably finds this will stop people from posting what might be valuable info for fear of being rebuked.
And yes, why do people feel the need to preach about seaching? Get a feckin life!!!!

Thats not on really, I did try the search before I added my post and I was easily able to find threads relating to this topic which is where this question should have been posted. Even the OP acknowledges the existence of other threads in the.. er... OP.
I added a note to the J-Zeus in case he/she felt my response was over zealous as upon re-reading it it does sound a little sarcastic and he/she has responded amicably. The thread has been moved since my post.
I have been using this forum ever since I got involved in hacking my XDAII (new account since then as lost my details) and the desire section is the messiest I've seen, I guess because this is the first iPhone killing android phone and has proven to be unbelievably popular. I was only trying to ensure this forum remains usable, ordered and collaborative.
What I said was in line with the forum rules, your response isn't.

Coolio!
BTW I don't know if you have spotted but there are 3 search tools on the forum. The one at the top between new posts and quick links is a...
'site:xda-developers.com <your term here>' Google search.
But once you are in a thread, at the top of the OP there is the option to 'search this thread' which may help out in some searches as it is, of course, limited to the current thread only.
In any given forum section, in the same position, there is the option to 'search this forum'

IMO that would be very strage if Desire wont get Froyo and would be dated after two months.
But I have seen Google Nexus One with Desire's OS, which means we will be able to put Nexus One's or Magic's Froyo if it wont be offered officialy ?
Hy community,
I once was a newbie on XDA (and still am ^^), but with the time I understood more and more things, now I want to give back and condensate the Information I got to answer questions I see often in multiple threads.
there are more and more questions about sense and roms and SOFF and if your phone can control your mind if you take an image of a brain as your wallpaper...
So here is the
officially unofficial "Question's you better not ask"
thread.
Feel free to add your 2 cents in the comments, I will try to keep this updated with your ideas
The goal of this thread is to inform the users, in order to avoid them asking those things and getting angry answers or blocking real dev work on threads.
Does this AOKP/CM9/AOSP Rom have sense ? :silly:
Click to collapse
No ! It's like if you were asking if Linux has windows in it, if a Ferrari has a Dacia in it...
Explanation : Sense is a framework, it's like wrapped over the android OS. AOKP/AOSP/CM9 based roms are free of this framework and based on the original google android source code.
In the same idea, a sense rom doesn't contain CM9, but you can make it look like with themes or a "de-sensing".
For this exact reason, you need to wipe your phone before installing a non-sense rom over a sense one (or the other side) (even if you should wipe when going from one rom to another, sense or not.
Does this AOKP/CM9/AOSP rom contain the sense cam

No, It has to do with what is written in the first explanation.
Explanation : Most sense apps and widgets are linked to the sense framework, some more, some less, making it theoretically possible to port those apps to a fully sense framework free environement. However, the camera is solidely attached to the framework, it may be possible, but don't hope for it soon
Can I flash the boot.img from "rom A" on "rom B" ?

And still the answer is : NO ! you will end in a bootloop.
Explanation : The Boot.img contains many stuff like kernel, ramdisk... and this ramdisk is different for most of the rom's and a boot.img will only fully work with an adequate ramdisk.
However, you can repack the kernell with the zImage tool which is to be found in the forums.

It's obvious you've spend 'a lot' of time with the intro of this thread.
But all you write is old news as all is written already, 'instructions enough'.
To my opinion this thread won't help anybody because people who don't like to read won't read anyway,
so this thread is another clutter, nothing more to my opinion as it don't bring anything new.
Mods please close?
Thanks!

When I started on XDA I was searching for a recap like this, people not wanting to read throught hundreds of pages of a well-filled thread is not meaning they won't read a recapitulative thread...
Is a post trying to help others such a pain for you ? If this can help one person and avoid a single useless post on a single thread I will be more than happy.
I hope you can revise your judgment...
You just created a extra thread, nope I won't revise my statement.
Probably you have good intensions, but to my opinion this thread is clutter and a waist.

I agree. This is the strangest forum I've participated in on XDA. Here's some personality categories I’ve observed.
* Narcissist’s - in spite of a topic or point being posted multiple times in an already open thread, people feel that they're experiencing of an issue is somehow more important than anyone/everyone else's. They have no problem starting a new thread saying "I know this has been posted before, but..." Hint: before you post, ask yourself are you posting for the benefit of others or for yourself?
* Newbies with Attitudes - Not picking on this user in particular but this is an excellent example.
RADLOUNI said:
I am totally furious about the fact that HTC released an ICS phone with a GB kernel. Sorry if it sounds negative but this is plain deception, and disrespect to its base of customers. Other vendors without mentioning the name has released their phone with a decent ICS kernel.

Not only is it naive, it's wrong. Had it been posted as a question "what's the difference between the 2.X and 3.X kernel?" the poster would have realized s/he's uninformed. Hint: instead of coming out with both guns blazing, ask a question rather than making a statement if you're not sure about what you're talking about.
* Martyrs - Yes, the One X has launch issues. More than it should. They're all well known by now. Similar to the narcissists, the martyrs relish reiterating the same complaints amongst themselves in page after page in a thread. Hint: No one here can help you. Rather than ***** pointlessly figure out how to get your problem resolved. I'm not having any problems but it took me all of five minutes to find the two most senior HTC execs in Europe that oversee customer service so those with issues could have someone to write to and seek help. Hint: Don't just post "*****es," post potential remedies.
There are other personality categories unique to the One X forum but you get my point. I love my One X but sure wish it came with SGS3 forum.

A RUU is the full ROM installation utility from HTC, using it will fully reset your phone to the same state when you bought it (only thing it won't change is the fact your phone is locked/unlocked if I remember well), can't tell you what it wouldb be in Samsung-land ut probably samsungs Odin flashable base rom.

Pointless *****ing from someone who thinks he is better than everybody else. Reported.
We all had to deal with this, and those of us who put the time and effort in are thankful for these restrictions as there would be even more idiots and wasters without them.

Think I did a useful proposal here. I read in the explanation for this noob-spam issues that if we know of a better alternative to filter users just propose it.
If you read me between lines you have a proper alternative by just letting the ones, like me, who contribute in the xda-premium app to change their user status to something less restrictive.
Don't you think it's a good idea to both enhance the app-buys and give users like me an alternative?
Don't want to mess with the forum, just report a bug since yesterday jejejeje

No, I think it is a really bad idea. A total of $1 to get some sort of 'Special' status? Because the people who want to come on here purely to spam and try to get commercial crap posted won't want to pay $1 to get a quicker and easier route to doing that will they
While your proposed idea does look good on paper, the issue of piracy pops in...
Android is the worst os when it comes to development, from an anti-piracy point of view...
Granted that piracy is rampant on other os's too, but it is much much much more than any other os of its calibre...
I can bet my whole work on xda that more than 80% of all android users have pirated an app or game or theme or whatever...
So, as I said, granting dev area access to all junior members is not such a good idea, as it would actually increase app piracy, rather than push up sales...
2 more to go...

Thank you for your concern.
This is the ROM-post (FOXHOUND for GalaxyS3): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708371
This is the issue:
Hi, I’m having issues with the phone-number recognition algorithm. Is there any tweak with it here o just a JellyBean error?
Here in Buenos Aires, Argentina we have this numbers: +54 11 0000-0000, if the number is a cellular phone, we add a nine like: +54 9 11 2222-2222. I have all the mobiles in my contactlist like that. But because the ’9′ is not used for internal calls, The network providers don’t forward the nine and I see +54 11 2222-2222.
So When an incoming call / sms says the number is +54 11 2222-222, The phone doesn’t show the proper contact because it’s missing the ’9′ in front of it.
In stock rom from my galaxy S3, my old iphone, and some other roms I tested I didn’t have this issue. Any ideas?
thanks!!!

Contrary to what I had believed, your post doesn't have a close precedent (from what I could conclude through a quick google)
While I do not know the solution or what causes such issues on your device, I can suggest a workaround...
You obviously use call log pretty much...
In my phone, there does appear an option to edit numbers before calling...what this does is simply copy-pasting the number to the dialler where you can freely edit it...
There, its a simple matter of adding a 9 in between...
P.s. I don't run jb, so the exact option may vary

Thank you for your time looking for a fix and the workarround.
I found another one, just putting both phones in the contact works for me. Now I have my regular contacts with both with and without the '9'.
Why do you need the contact with '9' ? Because if I am abroad and have to talk to a mobile phone in my country, the 9 is a must to establish the call.
Why do you need the contact without the '9' ? Just because the phone can't recognize the contact if not.
Really appreciete the devotion in solving others issues. Keep up the good work making this forum the great place it is.
If it was an open source rom, I'm sure you could patch the framework to ignore the lack of 9 for caller id
I'm a bit noob on Android, had I Phone since it's release. But I'll be checking if I can review this in the source.
Was my first thought

Post in the dev threads yet because I'm new.Smack in my face. I been here for on and off for years and now i register and cant post with devs until I have 10 post....LAME
Anyways Im going to give Holy grail Rom a try. i was using Jelly Bomb but it seems bloated to me and all that blue is kinda of unnecessary. It may the best for 12 year old kids but not me, either way it is a awesome rom
I'm kind of in the same boat. I've been trolling forever and now have an issue updating to the latest ROMs and can't actually post in the proper place until I make 10 posts about things I don't care about.
Thanks for giving me a reason to post!
In case anyone can answer my question before I get to 10 posts....I've been using Jelly Bomb for some time now and have never had any problems installing the latest ROM. However when I try to install the latest 14.0 version I get stuck on the Samsung boot screen. I cleared everything, reset everything. Only thing I can do is get back in and restore my backup. I tried a different ROM with the newest additions (multiview and whatnot) and the same thing happened. Any thoughts on why I can't get my phone to load ROMs with the new stuff?
Thanks!
Humm I dont know about that one. hopefully someone else can help

Did you do a clean install and if so what/how did you do it. Did you check the md5 sum? How did you download the ROM? On your phone? On a computer then transfer it over etc. The more info the better.

I'm thinking bad dl
To the OP, we all had to go through it and best thing to do if you don't like a devs work is to not use it, plus you can always look for a theme if colors an issue, no need to bash any devs, they bust arse so we can use their work.....just saying :good:
10 post rule is to protect developers from spammers and new members who do not know the proper place or what to post.
Specifically that now questions are being asked here in General after the initial "gripe."
So this is being moved to Q&A where ALL questions should go, not a general thread to make your 10 posts to hound a dev
You will get quicker and more considerate answers in Q&A, especially if you did not search the ROM thread before asking
Thank you

I'm just gonna go ahead and call BS on those whiners who are stuck with <10 posts. I'm qualified to do so since I was recently one of them. The truth is if you are not at least somewhat interested in phone tech, (even if it's just for your model of phone), you should not be rooting and romming. I say that because if you want root or a custom rom on your phone, you should at the very least, have spent time reading about it. Not for 15 minutes or 1/2 hour but several hours. If you realize while reading about it, that the subject matter just can't hold your attention, then you probably shouldn't be playing around with your phones software in the first place, and you definitely shouldn't be rooting your phone . Before rooting and installing a rom, you should have a pretty good idea why you want a rooted phone and custom rom in the first place, and "just because" doesn't cut it. If you want to do it just because you can, good luck with that.
But if you're really interested in the tech stuff about your phone, then you'll probably spend some free time perusing these pages and you should have no problem finding 10 things to either ask a question about, or offer a helpful comment or advice to someone needing it.
I actually think its fair, the 10 post rule.. i even felt bad that ive been using these forum for so many years and i dont even have 10 posts under my name. I necer really needed to because i always found what im looking for in past threads but when i wanted to thank a dev for his great work, i couldnt post :/
Anyway were you able to download the new roms? Ive read that people often have problems depending on the method used to download the rom and flashing it.. also you can try to do the wiping process after you install the rom also..hope you get to enjoy these new features soon pal.

Could you suggest some posts with methods that will work for KF2? I am beginner and sometimes do not really understand what the post is talking about. Thanks.

Let's get down to the cold, hard truth for a moment.
As a "beginner", you should not be trying to modify second generation Kindle Fires like the KF2. They are very sensitive. One slight misstep can leave you with something that is (slightly) less functional than a doorstop. You will probably not find a single tutorial that will teach you everything you need to know, so you need to ask yourself...what do you actually know? Do you know how to use the command line efficiently. Do you understand basic commands for navigating your way through your directory hierarchy? Are you familiar with ADB? Do you have it installed? Is it connected? Are you familiar with its commands and what they do? If you answered "no" to any of these, then you should probably begin there rather than diving head first into something that is considerably more advanced.
Once you have a basic foundation to work with, start reading threads in your device's General and Q&A forums. If you find something you don't understand, search for an answer to that problem. You continue with this process until you feel you have reached a dead end and cannot continue forward....then start a thread (or find one similar) and ask your question.
There is way too much information to be learned than can fit in a simple step-by-step response to your question, and if you think you can rely on such a condensed version of what you need to know, then the best of luck to you, because you will probably be joining the ranks of many others who have done exactly the same and failed miserably.

Thanks for the candid heads up. The answer to almost all of your questions is 'yes'. I will start looking into threads.
And order a fastboot cable. It's very important

What does it do? I looked up for answers but didn't really find an answer, everybody just mentioned it but never explained.
