xbmc stream stutters/jerkiness of 720p content - Ouya Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

anyone else have problems streaming 720p content on smoothstreams or something similar?
this only happens on hd content as i get jerky stutter. on other xbmc boxes i have such as the boxee this problem doesn't exist.
anyone else have similar issues? i'd love to use xbmc full time on the ouya but this is a deal breaker for me. i mean a hacked xbmc running off a usb stick on the boxee this doesn't occur in

Ouya has a poor wifi function. If you want to stream HD video, pls plug into cable. I plug my portable hdd into it.

One option that may help is if you use gpu to render,to do that go into developer options on the ouya and choose Disable HW overlays, your relying on the gpu apposed to software so much for the screen compositing as it puts it.
If developer options aren't enabled yet go to settings about tablet and hang over build number with the mouse pointer and click multiple times until it tells you you are a developer or you now have developer options.Doing that 1st sort of discounts video rendering being the problem and would then point to either a connection problem between the ouya nad the router or an isp providence issue eg.speed is poor or a bad network at that time.

Is this on stock or a custom ROM? If it's a custom ROM, you might want to check the CPU clock settings. I'm running CM11 and the CPU governer was set to interactive by default, causing all sorts of jerkiness on video playback. I set it to performance (to keep the CPU running at 1.6GHz constantly) and now I've been able to play 30mbit 1080p videos without problems in Plex.

yeah, as a said this is only with smooth streams. other playback is fine. the person above has the same problem.
additionally, this problem exists only on the Ouya. doesn't happen on a pc or even the hacked xbmc on boxee boxe's or my intel nuc.
i guess its nuc only for me right now this ouya is worthless with this problem existing.

[Q] Netflix on Ouya?

I know we're just speculating about capabilities at this point, but does anyone know if the Ouya will be able to run the Netflix Android app? That would be a huge if it could.
it should run. It may have to sided loaded at first. the only question is how well the user interface will work with a controller. It should be navigable if Sixaxis Controller and app are any indication.
I put Netflix on mine. Without changing the key mapping (which might interfere with games), the gamepad didn't work too well with Netflix. I had to just use the trackpad on the gamepad to use a mouse cursor.

That's the method I'm using. It works fine in a pinch, but it's not nearly as good as Netflix for the Roku. I certainly hope they develop an Ouya version.

The biggest problem I've noticed is the stream quality on Ouya. I've connected mine via Ethernet and (maybe others can confirm with Netflix) the stream seems very poor, especially on a large screen. For example, streaming Foxsoccer2go on highest quality on Ouya looks MUCH worse than running through my laptop -> hdmi port on the TV. Unless there is some kind of method to improve this, I would not recommend streaming on the Ouya.
It's because you're running a phone app. Newest Netflix streams 1080p, but needs Android 4.3.
I've heard that if you grab the Netflix APK that was released for the Google TV it's better, but I haven't personally confirmed yet

But every time i found the same problem of crashing, i just wonder is it really a problem or just something wrong with my AFTV ?. It happens very often so i can not conclude that when exactly it crashes. Even i have not rooted my device. and nothing is installed except XBMC.
Also somebody would like to answer is there any way to update librtmp without root ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated !

that is not normal behavior.. I've been running pretty solid since April. You need to produce a log and see what's happening could be so many things.

Have you tried running without addons installed? Try only one installed at a single time to root out the cause. I only have Icefilms on two devices and have yet to experience a crash.
Set decoding method to "Hardware accelerated", fixed crashing for me.

Thanks all for resonses
Now the working/solution part
This solution will ONLY solve problem for those who are using Live tv, (at-least as I do). Both, SPMC and official XBMC crashed on Live tv (or any Live Stream addson) but not when playback from local contents. Now my fire tv runs quit smoothly with no crashed issues.
These are the following steps which needs to be done :
1. Turn off both filters (mediacodec and libstagefright) under hardware acceleration.
(goto System->Settings->Video->Acceleration>disable both filters MediaCodec and Libstagefright)
2. Change hardware acceleration to software. (when there is no filter activated it will automatically work as software, so basically Decoding method can be leave as Hardware accelerated as well)
3. Enable 'Allow multi thread software decoding' (optional if you changed DecMtd to Sofwre)
For those user who are not using LIVE TV but they have the same problem while using any other addson or streaming media from local server.
ONLY turning off Mediacodec could stabilize the system. Also bare in mind everything works fine with software rendering but sometimes cpu can be exhausted so try to put the device in open area where air can easily circulate, haven't notice so much heat but its better to be prepare.
With Mediacodec disabled, it also notices that XBMC runs little slower while watching movies and for example navigating the menus. That could also be cachemembuffersize, if experiences the lagging issue increase the cachemembuffersize.
Now i simply request to our respected developers to make some adjustments/fix to the media library so it can smoothly support Fire TV hardware.
Thanks all folks for helping each other.

Changing these settings worked for me too! Only on Live Tv my Premium channels would freeze and just keep playing audio(DIY, Lifetime, History, Animal Planet, Fox News, All HBO, SHOWTIME etc...) BUT now the problem is the picture has a lag to it, without he accelerations enabled they lag, I am using the new fire tv 2015, any other ideas to fix this or is Amazon Fire Tv just no good for Kodi? I will say I tried Kodi 14.2, 15.2, 16, and I have a paid subscription for iptv, my same settings work perfect on my windows machine.
Thanks

Blurriness on FireTV Stick and software version

Hello
I got the Kodi 14 RC1 install on my Fire Stick. It works really well despite one problem, blurriness despite at high resolution like 1080p. For example, if I watch a twitch stream through XBMC or Twitch app itself, the picture looks like it runs on 360/480 despite I select 1080p. I read in some of posts that this seems to be some software codec issues since for certain video files it runs fine without the blurriness issue. Also, Netflix is not working, it will starts to play then stop. I wonder if Amazon is aware of this and they are going to fix it soon.
On another note, my FireStick is running the original firmware (54.1.0.0_user_100211520). They have and updated version of the software, version 54.1.0.1_user_101016220. I want to know if anybody is running this newer version. Is the newer version fix the blurriness issue and Netflix? If yes, then I will upgrade it to the newer version since it is annoying since I can't read any small text at higher resolution because it is too blurry.
Thanks for your help.
Just got my stick yesterday and I allowed the system update. I can confirm Netflix works without issue. I'm also running TVMC which is based on XBMC Gotham 13.2, this also runs great, crisp picture on 1080p movies. Maybe the newer codecs in Kodi 14 not optimized for FireTV stick?

Hello,
Thanks for the info. I just did an upgrade to the newer version and you are right. Netflix runs great on it. However, Kodi 14.0 RC1 still has the same blurrines. I guess I will just wait till the official 14.0 is released. Thanks for replying.
Yup, same here, Kodi UI is crisp but videos are blurry. . I hope this gets ironed out.

I concur. I'm having the same issue on my FireTV Stick. I'm running it on a 720p display. I will also try it on a 1080p display and see if it's any better.
I have tried both XBMC 13.2 and SPMC (13.3 I think) and they are both not as sharp as the native FireTV Stick apps even though I'm playing Blu-Ray rips through XBMC.
Was having the same issue with my stick and gave up and sold it, hopefully someone can find a fix and I'd buy it again, great value

Video Issues w/ Side Loaded Kodi

So I decided to pick up AFTV a week ago after reading so many good reviews about the device and how well it runs Kodi, but I am having an issue running certain MKV files with dual audio. When I try to play the videos Kodi either crashes to the FTV menu or restarts the whole device. I tried to disable the accelerators in settings and the video starts to play with stuttering and no audio. Anyone know what could be the cause of this and is there a fix available.
BTW I'm running Helix 14.0

I cant post links yet, but google "Work in Progress - Experimental simple deinterlacing" and you will get the Kodi forum that has an updated kodi for the issue.

Try SPMC. I had problems of somekind with all versions of XBMC that I have tried on the Fire TV til I installed SPMC. I have not had one problem with SPMC and could instantly tell a difference in the smoothness of streams and video playback.
I think i've tried them all.

My problem with any version of XBMC whether it be SPMC or KODI is that 720p MPEG-2 always stutters. I've tried everything I think including.
SW only
Listagefright only
Mediacodec only
Listagefright and MediaCodec
SPMC 13.4 & 14.2 (I think these are the final versions i used)
KODI 13.4 & 14.2 & 15.1 (I think those are the final versions)
My next try was going to be to use MX player and the playercorefactory.xml but so far I haven't been able to get that to work. It just flashes really quick and does nothing when I click on a channel.
BTW....I have comcast so everything is in MPEG-2 and I use an HDHOMERUN prime that feeds a windows 7 machine with WMC running serverWMC and Plex (w/ serverWMC plex plugin). I also have an xbox 360 and that works perfectly but the only way I can get fire tv stick to work reliably is by transcoding to h.264. But this adds at least 10 seconds to a channel change and It really complicates the setup and maintenance. I would really like to not have to transcode and use KODI on the firetv stick as my front end. However, without mpeg2 720p support I can't.

HomerunTV - HD Homerun Live TV on Fire TV

Just wanted to share my experience today I bought this app since I own HD Homerun while having it on Kodi with PVR was nice it required a server computer to be running while watching.
Just wanted to let all guys know that the app costs 2.99$ (it's not mine of course I wish I was that skilled) everything works amazingly with fire REMOTE there is only one small issue in order to hit PLAY you must use mouse, I emailed dev asking him about this so it might be fixed soon!
How it works? it uses MX player or VLC media player to play the live channel ( my ISP is Verizon fios ) and channels stream usually around 18 mbps on lan in HD.
My Setup is:
Ethernet Cable
Homerun TV
VLC Media player (newest extracted from playstore) sometimes screen gets black it might be VLC issue (did not try with MX Player)
I'd say it's worth 2.99$ quality over VLC media player is great as well!
Update Feb 06 2015
Small Tips:
In order to play channel you must USE mouse to point it to "play button"
Set VLC media player to "Full hardware accelaration"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zaren.HomeRunTV&hl=en
Stream live TV from your HDHomeRun device to your phone or tablet. (Unprotected, copy freely channels only)
This application will allow you to stream live TV to your android phone or tablet. It can be streamed to your device in 1 of 2 ways.
1. Directly from the hdhomerun to your device. This requires a strong network connection to your device (wireless N recommended) and a powerful enough device to decode 1080i video.
2. Through the HdhomerunStreamServer. This uses VLC to transcode the video to a lower bandwidth.
you're telling me you can stream HD smoothly with this app? It's been a couple months since I tried it when it first was released for the Fire TV, and any HD channel caused severe stuttering. I'm on a wired GBe LAN as well. That'd be great if an update to the app fixed this.
UPDATE: Nevermind, I was referring to the app released by Silicon Dust themselves.

Yea the silicondust app is very laggy.
This one streams without a SINGLE lag because it uses MX Player or VLC.
Make sure to sideload VLC media player.
I asked the dev about placing the play button somwhere else. We'll see what happens.
Streams perfectly.

If you don't mind me asking, what setup were you using with Kodi (e.g. server OS, server software, HDHomeRun configuration, etc.). I've got the HDHomeRun Plus / Extend and have not had a lot of luck settings things up.
I tried using TVHeadEnd on an Ubuntu server and Kodi running the TVHeadEnd plug-in. It streams fine only some of the time, but I get frequent crashes, especially when changing channels. In addition, I could not get any PVR functionality to work, nor have I been able to get h.264 transcoding from the HDHomeRun to work.
I then tried using MythTV, but could not get the Kodi MythTV plugin to work -- it would show the stations, but not be able to connect to the streams. (I also had trouble getting the MythTV server configured with the HDHomeRun, but that's not really related to the Fire TV.)
Thanks.

I don't use any PVR's I simply use Homerun TV and watch it via the app (I added shortcut in Kodi) so it's faster to open it.
I have a HDHomerun plus, adding the dlna server source of the HDHomerun to the files under videos is by far the best quality live streams I have gotten.
Regarding PVR with the Hdhomerun plus, I tried the same things. I finally said forget it and got a simple TV for $100 on woot with lifetime sub. It actually works much better than the reviews led me to believe. I access the recordings through plex.

I found out a few days ago that you can adjust the quality stream in the actual HDhomerun view app. When the app is open just keep on pressing the menu button rapidly until the settings comes up then you can select the stream quality.
Also I had a Amazon gift card to burn so I actually bought InstaTV Pro. It comes up as a free app but it is by no means a free app. It cost $10 (which bites) because it has to download codecs. However it works very well.
