I'll get my phone back from motorola after having the speaker problem soon. Also i was quite happy when i looked around the defy section and found out that there are so many 2.2 roms. So now i have this question.
1. I'm not familiar with nandroid back and all that. So if someone can give me some explaination of how it works and what i need to do to have a backup of my rom so i can flash back to orignal one whenever i want?
2. Also i heard from people that some ROMs are not flashable or you can't get back to stock rom (recovery), if so then how you know that certain rom isn't flashable
3. Is there a difference between recoving (flashing stock rom) and downgrading?
Thanks !
No one actually knows what flashing is? recovery....i'm surprised...do answer please if you know anything
Wanted to check and see if i can just accept the sprint update to zvb even with root and the phone unlocked with freegee. I haven't done anything else to the phone. This way I have zvb and then i can go with the lifeless rom or one of the others. It's either that or flashing the new radios and then the lifeless rom. I'm just not sure where or how to flash the new radios and thought doing the update through sprint would be easier.

no you cant but since you are unlocked itd be easier to just flash one of the zvb roms. if you want a stock experience they have stock roms with nothing removed that you can flash

Thanks, just needed to know that. I guess I'll figure out how to flash the radio update and then go and flash a zvb rom. I usually don't use stock roms anyway. I've only flashed roms before and never anything else, so that's what I need to learn next.

I have a quick question. I am on a stock rooted 4.1.1 att sgs3. I was curious if i flashed this rom/kernal,[ROM/KERNEL][4.4.2] Quantum 3.54 & QuantumKernel 3/7, would i be able to go back to my stock rooted rom if I wanted to? Thanks in advance.
Looks like you are trying to flash a custom ROM. Don't know much about these particular ROMs you mentioned but you need to your research thoroughly on custom ROMs before flashing. You may know most Custom ROMs don't come with their own bootloaders but still have to rely on a manufacturer's bootloader to run. You should, therefore, avoid any ROM that may update your bootloader because this is the only way that you would not be able to return to your previous stock version. If the ROM simply updates the system without mucking with your bootloader, there is no reason why you may not be able to return to stock.
I had an AT&T SG3 on stock 4.1.1 and I was able to flash KitKat (4.4) based CM11 and return to stock 4.1.1 without any hitches. Finally, whilst you are still on stock 4.1.1 I would suggest you take advantage of all the flexibilities offered by this Android version especially free unlocking before you begin tinkering with firmware.
So as long as I dont update my bootloader, I should be fine on going back to stock rooted 4.1.1? Thanks for the info!!
So how do i know what roms dont mess with the bootloader?
Most ROMS do not include an aboot file. I have flashed CM11, Validus, Slim, and Cyanfox and none of these altered the bootloader.
I suggest that you find a ROM you like, unzip the file, and look at the updater script to determine which bootloaders are required to install the ROM on your phone.
Ok guys, thanks for the tips. I just didn't want to get stuck on a firmware where i could not have root anymore or go back to a stock rooted rom.
Hello,
I hope this question has not been asked before, if it has then please accept my apologies. I am currently rooted on the stock ZVA Rom that came with my phone and as most of you know there are alot of issues getting a 4G signal on this rom because of the ZVA radio that is installed by default and my questions are as follows:
1.) If I switch to the ZV8 radio will 4G work on my phone? (assuming I in a 4G area that is)
2.) Can I switch back and forth between the ZV8 & ZVA radios without to much fuss? (meaning what steps are involved assuming I am running stock rooted like I said before)
3.) Where can I find the above radio files so that I can flash them using TWRP? (I have found a couple of threads where they are listed but I am not sure if they are for stock roms or custom roms so I need the ones for a stock ZVA rom)
TIA,
Mtcell
1. Yes. ZVA is just the update for Spark. ZV7 and ZV8 both work with everything else including 4G, 3G, ect.
2. Not speaking from experience, but after reading about it it looks to be pretty easy. Just flashing what you want.

^^that link covers everything and has links the the radios.

Thanks for the reply. The link you posted with the radios was the one I was talking about, but I was not sure if they were for custom ROMS or the stock rom and I did not want to install something that could potentially brick my device.
About the other 2 questions, has anyone actually switched back and forth between the 2 radios, if so what was your experience ?
TIA,
Mtcell

They're for both stock and AOSP based ROMs. The kernel is what is specific for stock and custom.
It seems dr87's kernal and Furnace now allow ZVA to be used on custom AOSP ROMs. Those are the ONLY kernels you can use for ZVA without bricking your device for custom ROMs. ZV8 still supports the other kernels. Most of the stock ROMs now support ZVA I believe without having to flash a kernel, but read the threads before doing anything.
In my experience its much easier and less worrying to just use the ZV8 radio. If you have spark in your area then its worth a shot but be very careful. If soft bricked my device but got it back up and running.
I have a Sprint L720 running a odexed stock MK2 rom from circa 2013. I followed all the steps back then flashed a custom recovery and the rom for the hotspot capability and am still extremely happy with how it turned out but... I want all those fancy new features lol. I don't really need anyone to hold my hand through the whole process but I did reformat a few times since then and have a couple questions before I start paperweightin' this.
Everything on here is MK2. Software, Baseband & Build. If i wished to flash a newer lolipop rom to my L720 would I need to apply any updates first? Can I flash the new rom from the custom recovery? I attempted to upgrade the firmware through Kies but keep running into a device not recognized error that I suspect is because I'm rooted. Anyway thanks in advance for your time!
(Mod can you please move this to the correct board, I can't find the option to delete this.)
