Ripped Blu Ray Playback Issues - Ouya Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, I'm running into playback issues with the majority of my ripped blu rays. When I play them, rainbow colors flash on the screen every couple seconds. I'm ripping my blu rays with MakeMKV. Videos are stored on external hard drive that is connected to Ouya via USB. Ouya is running 1st Gotham Beta. Any suggestions?

Got the same issue on nightly and smpc variant with some of my blu ray rips. I tried via Ethernet and USB.
All my rips are made with MakeMkv and with the same settings.
On pacific rim for example i also get the same error with rainbow colors every other second, while with the dark knight i get stuttering wothout color problems. Others again run without any problems at all.
Could this be a Problem with different audio and Video Codecs used on the blu rays themselve? As far as i know MakeMkv doesn't convert any formats and just blindly takes whatever is on the disk?

Next time you may want to try http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MkvToMp4 instead of handbrake. It can often repackage instead of reencode and so is much faster.

Using handbrake to convert dvds to mp4 format - issues

Hi
Been having a play about today trying to get some of my dvds onto my desire. Thought I'd give handbrake a go but the results are terrible ie not watchable. Basically the picture is filled with green white and purple blocks through the film.
I am using handbrake to rip and convert at once, I assume that's ok? I've used settings that I found on the forum.
Laptop is more than spec'd up enough to be able to convert with no issues.
It's not an issue with the desire as the pic is the same if I play it on my laptop.
Anyone got any idea what the issue could be and how to fix?
Thanks

You are aware that Handbrake does not remove the encryption from ripped DVDs?
From the FAQ:
First off, you should know that HandBrake is not a DVD ripper. There are many of those out there. For Mac, the best option is Fairmount paired with DVD2OneX. For Windows, it's AnyDVD. HandBrake's about video conversion, not stripping copy protection. For best results, you should feed HandBrake unprotected video.

To reencode or not to reencode videos?

Do you reencode HD video for the Note 2? If so, what have you found to be an ideal format and resolution? I mentioned in another thread that the native player and MX Player will play the video for my .MKV's but not the DTS soundtrack. I've fiddled with the settings on both players, but I'm not getting any sound at all for any of my blu-ray rips.
Generally I just grab the 720p version and leave it as is. The native player had an issue with one of my mkv files, but MX played it fine, no audio issues.
I generally download straight on the device, so to re-encode it would require transferring the file twice, plus the encoding time. Not worth it to me.

Look at Randles' two posts on this page.

I tried running a 720p video using mx player (good quality video I think) from a plugged in usb flash key drive and kept getting frozen frames every few seconds though the sound was ok. I was considering asking the same question about how it should be encoded to play without stuttering. Then I played with the player and discovered I could pinch to zoom in or out of the image while it was playing and if I reduced the display a minimal amount it would play correctly. I changed it to 99% of normal size and no more playback problems. I don't know why this is but hope it helps someone...

Thanks. Most of my videos are 720P MKV's with DTS sound. After installing the codec above, I haven't had any issues, but if I do, I will keep your suggestion in mind.

1080P on XBMC

I'm trying to play some 1080P videos on the ouya but they lag like hell on XBMC.
I thought the tegra 3 was fast enough to play full 1080 or am I incorrect?
Anyone playing full 1080p videos on it smoothly?

I have heard people playing 1080p fine. Are you using the stagefright build? And what are you playing them off of (Streaming from computer wirelessly, USB hard drive, etc)?

I just tried playing a 1080p some movies using Dice player and it's able to play relatively smoothly (can't get menus to show up while playing).
I'm using the default xbmc-12.2-Frodo-armeabi-v7a and it's lagging like crazy.
Oh and i'm playing the videos off a USB hard drive.
You need to use the Gotham release with stagefright. It has hardware acceleration and should be able to play them fine. Try the newest one from here:

actually I think you need one from here that includes stagefright (so I assume the SF ones).

Depends on what sort of "3D" you're talking about.
All the 3D releases I have are in SBS format, which means they're actually just regular 1080P videos with weird looking content.
Your 3D hardware is the thing that unpacks SBS video into actual 3D, so you don't need anything special on the player.
My Ouya can play my 1080P SBS videos just fine, and my projector handles the 3D part, works great

Well 1080p is now playing properly with the new experimental version of XBMC.
I tested the 3d 1080P version of avatar that I have and unfortunately it lags. Has a slight constant stuttering in the video.
That film in particular gave me trouble even on my computer (with 16 GB of RAM and an i7 CPU). Something about the audio track in the two releases I got.
I was able to fix it by taking the DTS track off the 2D version I have and combine that with the 3D SBS video track.
I don't honestly know why it was jacked up. You using a Side-By-Side encoded copy, or what?

Yes it was a Side-By-Side encoded version.
When I get some time I'll test out some other 3d movies to make sure it's not just some one off problem. But like I said, my wdtv live plays it fine.
Thank you

Are you actually able to play back any 1080p vc-1 videos. I installed this build which works fine on h.264, but vc-1 gives black screen with audio. bsplayer does same.
Both apps work well on tf700 tegra3.

I don't have any vc-1 format videos, but plenty of 1080p, and I have only had issues with one which was 32+ GB. The video would go corrupt every 5 seconds but it streamed at high fps and good audio, so I am guessing it was some kink that has yet to be worked out or an oddly encoded video file. I have played others that were ~17 GB and they play fine. Which build of Gotham are you on?

I know vc1 interlaced video are difficult to play even vlc on my pc gives me corruption.
From testing the two versions I have found the Gotham release appears to support more encodes but stagefright plays them better. I do have slight stutter while playing some 1080p files

I am also getting stutter on any video type, from a 1080p HD to crappy SD rips. I am using the latest gotham_alpha5SF build from 7/3/13
Update: I rolled back to alpha4SF from 6/4/13 and it seems to have smoothed it out.

MX Player

Who uses the MX Player on their Note 2? Are there any particular settings which I should use for optimal playback?
Also, is there something better? I started using MX Player because I ran into issues with videos I made that the standard player wouldn't deal with.
I were trying to play an MKV file with MX Player awhile ago and it wouldn't play so i switched to BS Player. It does everything I need it too. MX might be able to play MKV by now but I'm not giving up BS to find out.
I use PowerAmp and have no issues with any file types.

I use MX Player on my Note 2 (and all my devices) for about a year or so and love it. The stock settings work great for me, and it has never failed to play a video that would choke the stock player, but the kids lock plugins seal the deal. Unbeatable if you have a grabby toddler.

I'm in the exact same boat on all accounts.
MX Player is the best really. Even though it plays mostly everything, i'm sort of the type who likes all his files in (one format) mp4 format so i convert everything i have to mp4 (as i get them, using Handbrake mostly). Default settings work just fine.
+1 here. Been using mx for about a year and it's great. Plays my mkv files no problem by the way. I also use the "stock" settings. Never have to adjust them UNLESS I'm on a cm based rom. If so all I've ever had to do was go into decoder settings and click hw+. Nothing else. Once I do that everything is as smooth as a stock rom.
Just my two cents
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
I always used MX player until i saw Mobo Player mentioned in the CM thread, does everything MX does, handles everything i can throw at it, and it has a floating window option. Best video player for our devices, hands down. Probably the best for many larger screen devices also. VLC has been pretty good too me also,, despite it being so early in dev..
So what's a better format, mkv or mp4? I would like to convert all my movies over, just don't know which format would be best.

It kinda depends on a few things. Mkv's can handle advanced styles of subtitles that mp4 can't. Also, to the best of my knowledge, mp4's can not handle DTS audio and mkv's can. The Note 2 can't natively play dts though but MX player can hardware render the video and software render the audio. Other than that if the videos are encoded properly the note 2 doesn't really care which of the 2 containers you use.
If there aren't any strict requirements i would just go with mp4 since handbrake is easy to use and your videos will be compatible with a larger number of devices if you go mp4.

Any good Video player for nexus 2013?

MXplayer-----The dark scene is bad, it's too bright and shows a lot of black block
Stock player---The dark scene is good, but it can't show built in subtitle, and also no subtitle on/off?
Any other good video player to try?
Try Dice Player or a VLC nightly.
I always use BSPlayer - never a problem. I used to use MX Video Player but had a few minor problems that BSPlayer solved.
Edit
Archos player and codecs now available on Play Store (highly rated video player) and I am using that now. I keep BSPlayer installed as backup tho.

MX player always good. But Archos just released one called ArchosVideoPlayer. If anything, Archos has always been known for great video playback capabilities.

VPlayer Pro.
bsplayer you either dont upgrade and use SW decoding or upgrade for HW decoding and lose dolby audio
(bs is my favorite because it supports windows filesharing and I can access my home NAS without using a third party app like DNLA streaming or cifs/smb file browsers)
MXPlayer works well
VLC nightlies work well
VPlayer isn't as good as any of the above IMHO but still decent.
Did DicePlayer finally get its dolby support back?
I use MX pro..I don't have any issues.

The best is MX Player with the dedicated plugin
Or you can try VLC Media Player
The blocking you are seeing is encoded in the video you are watching. Try using encodes with a higher bitrate.
The fact you see those blocks in the black background is testament to Nexus display's excellent reproduction of near black levels. Many other devices you don't see the blocks is likely as a symptom of their poor displays.

No it's not good to have those blocks, if you look at Sherlock Holmes movie 2 from 9:30 to 11:00, you will know the blocks are not part of the movie.

I figure out this problem. Mx player allows to change the bright, if I change to darker, those block will not seen. Bsplayer can't display my buildin subs.

I use gplayer myself. I used to use mobo player on my evo3d because it could save streaming videos and could be played in a floating window but when I tried getting mobo on my n7.2 it seemed like it was an older version full of bloatware so I tried gplayer. Now gplayer doesn't have a save as feature but it is a stand alone YouTube player. So if you click on a video link in tapatalk it will just launch a resizable floating video player so you can still read the forums and watch the video at the same damn time. BTW the portrait keyboard on this n7.2 is really comfortable. I can type a long response and not break a sweat. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
