[Q] Note 2 SPH-L900 does the method of rooting matter? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi all,
I'm running a completely unmodified Sprint Note 2. It's currently running Android 4.3, and ever since I took this over-the-air update in December 2013 it's been problematic. I'm looking to root and flash a custom ROM like JellyBomb Domination or SmoothestNote 2/3 Rom on it.
From what I've read I can root this phone using CF-Auto-Root and Odin but that's only recommended if you're planning on keeping the stock Rom. Is that true? Is there a different rooting method like Kongo or something I should use in order to flash one of those two Roms I mentioned above?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Weird, I got Kingo working and added TWRP but when I go to install JellyBomb v21 it appears to install everything, even says 'You've been JellyBombed!' but when it reboots the Samsung animation occurs, and then it just remains on the word SAMSUNG slowly pulsing the color blue.
Any ideas?

Yes remember twrp I read has some issues with 4.3..
I use ClockworkMod recovery and ROM manager.
root with Kingo...
download ROM manager...
flash cwm recovery through ROM manager...
Make backup..
wipe,wipe,wipe...
flash ROM
reboot
PROFIT....
However I have also read that if you took the 4.3 ota, then flashing back to 4.1.2 is a no go!
try Smoothest 4.3 ROM
or lorays mk4 ROM
I'm no expert but this was the steps that were successful for me...

Please make a note that you can downgrade Android 4.3 to 4.1.2 on the Sprint Note 2. Please follow the guide by @billard412 which will bring you back to 4.1.2 and remove the KNOX apps and bootloader but not reset it. You can find the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086769

Thanks for the guidance all. I followed that guide, and successfully downgraded back to stock 4.1.2 with the counter reset to zero. I opted for Xposed Framework instead of Jellybomb. Phone is smooth as butter now!

Do NOT use the QCOM Toolkit to Root the AT&T JB release!

If you try to root using the method in the toolkit it will screw up the phone and you will have to revert to stock using Odin. The phone will try to boot up but when it reaches the AT&T logo it will go black and the notification light will shine blue forever until you reboot.
If you did try to root using the QCOM Toolkit and you hit this snag use these links to revert back to stock/JB stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031840 ------ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426

Same here on Bell. And I didn't even have to factory reset coming from Serenity 1.2
I was running aokp for last 7 months and wanted too return to stock to try stock att 4.1 jb update this is what I did .first I have to say that I used root66 and although it worked I was seeing a few little issues. My camera was very dark looking and colors seem to be washed looking and also sound was low. I didnt really notice it much but from what I could remember my phone when I first got it was fine. So what I did was downloaded official jb from the sammy site and. Again re wiped my phone again and flashed with Odin stock rom. And wow what a difference I had forgotten what iI was like to have everthing work perfectly on my phone ..dont no why people hate tw so much..I rooted this time my self. And decided to stay stock for a while till 4.2 get all the bugs worked out..in all stock is running awesome great batterylife super smooth never a fc at all super fast camera and so on..good job. [Q] Does installing a custom recovery root your phone or not? Note 2 t0lte CM

Just had a quick question. Since i'm new and a first time rooter, i'm following the instructions on how to install CM on my Note II LTE i317M from the CM wiki site. I'm wondering if the first set of instructions "Installing a custom recovery on Galaxy Note 2 LTE" requires root access or if it gives me root access. The instructions involve clockworkmod recovery and the Heimdall Suite. If it gives root access then cool, i'll be on my way but if it doesn't and it requires root, which rooting method is suggested? I've seen mrRobinson's injected factory root image and also chainfire's method. Help please, i really appreciate the guidance! Thanks in advance!
Edit: And does the t0lte on CM's wiki include my i317M Note 2? As there is no Rogers i317M option to click so i'm assuming "Note 2 LTE t0lte" includes my phone.
No, you must root first then install recovery.
I would recommend watching some videos on YouTube and reading some more.
Recovery is not root...rather a stepping stone to allow it...
A custom recovery will allow the installation and modification of your OS...but root includes files being placed onto the device giving you full administrator rights...
Continued research will provide you the answers you seek...and won't bore you to tears like I will...LOL
Welcome ...and I do suggest that you fully read the first few posts of the CF auto root thread ...as it is the process you will likely use ...

Like ^^^^ said. You don't need root access to flash a recovery or a rom. Root assess is for working within your operating system (the flashed and installed rom), for tasks like modifying protected files and running certain apps that need to modify the system files.
i just got 2 answers, one person said yes i have to root and another said i dont have to root... confusing...
You need to root your device in order to flash Custom Recovery. With Custom Recovery installed you can now flash Custom ROMs, take nandroid backups, restore from backups etc.

New 4.3 to 4.1.2 downgrade method?

Hello, I recently decided to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.1 (I'm on Telus I747M 4.3) so that I can unlock my phone due to it being impossible while on 4.3. So then I knew that it basically was impossible, until I stumbled upon thishttp://www.androidpit.com/how-to-downgrade-galaxy-s3 So now I'm wondering if this method is possible? Anyone tried it? Telus users?
According to the screenshot, the s3 used was an i9300 rather than the i747m.
Personally, I would not take a chance.
I was able to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.1 however it's still not possible to unlock. Don't know why, I tried by leaving the new modem as well as downgrading the modem. ANY of the older modems would show up as unknown and not even let me into service mode.

Were on a stock 4.3 rom with the latest 4.3 bootloader? Did you use mobile Odin to downgrade the OS?
Yes stock 4.3 with new bootloader. I flashed TWRP with Odin then flashed a 4.1.1 custom rooted ROM with it. The problem with downgrading is changing the bootloader, if you flash the old firmware with Odin it flashes the bootloader also. Then you have problems, mabt reported brickings from this.

Just to confirm, you were on stock 4.3 with Knox, you flashed TWRP, you booted into the OS, and you still didn't have root?
I'm asking because I was trying to help another XDA member that is having trouble with his s3 that's running stock AT&T 4.3 ROM.
I would not call it a true downgrade since you only flashed a custom Rom and you still have the 4.3 bootloader and modem.

I rooted with Chainfire autoroot, when it booted Knox was blocking and force closing Super SU. I flashed TWRP with Odin, Knox is still there and no root access, but now you have a custom recovery and can flash a custom rom that has Knox removed. I'm running this:

As I said before after I rooted with CF, Knox blocks SuperSU or something and it force closes. No way to get into it and update binaries, and yes I was on the latest version. There are many people reporting this on the CF autoroot thread. This is the only way I was able to obtain root.
I'm well aware the bootloader cannot be downgraded. It also seems as long as you are on the new bootloader you can not use the normal unlocking methods. That's the reason this thread was started to begin with.

working downgrade!

Ive made a downgrade that brings you from the 4.3 ota to 4.1.1. the downgrade works but it has the 4.3 bootloader. just flash it via odin, then set it up and then you wont have sound or signal. to get that you must flash the modem file and voila it works. if you want toot just flash chainfires root and then flash recovery via odin. i am currently using this downgrade now with working everything. credit goes to santij07 fro his helpful thread

Install instructions
1. flash s3modder.tar via odin
2. set up phone
3. flash cf autoroot via odin
4. flash open recovery or that of your choosing via odin
5. reboot into recovery, flash modem, wipe caches

From the threads I have been reading, NO, you can not unlock using this.
This procedure will allow you to downgrade your ROM to 4.1.1 while leaving you on the 4.3 bootloader. To unlock using the free method you must be on completely stock 4.1.1. Completely stock, including the bootloader, which would be LK3 for the i747, I believe.

Why don't you give it a try and let us know? I think as long as you installed the 4.1.1 modem, you will be able to unlock you phone.
i wasn't able to. i actually traded my s3 for a s3 running 4.1.2 and on that one i just downgraded and then succesfully unlocked that one. sadly i don't have either anymore because the one running 4.1.2 was having speaker issues. i now have a vivid and wish i wouldn't of traded lol.

I was able to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.1. I do have a few questions though...
1. S3ModedRom.tar: Is it for the I747 or I747m?
2. Modem file: Is it flashed through TWRP or CWM?
3. How do I go back to 4.3?
Also...for those wondering if you can FREE UNLOCK: NO. I get only a blank service menu

Any ideas on going back to 4.3? Im currently downloading Samsung Kies. Any objections to that?
Followed the directions from a rooted 4.3 install and everything worked flawlessly. Thanks!!!

[Q] Stuck on rooted stock 4.1.2 firmware and I can't seem to do anything about it.

I'd love to update my firmware to KitKat but nothing I do will let me update it. When I do an OTA update it goes to 27% and then fails (I've tried this multiple times and it ALWAYS fails at 27%)
So far I have tried these other methods:
Installed (and uninstalled/rebooting my PC) Kies multiple times and tried various methods of upgrading it through there like trying download mode, which the phone didn't even recognize because it stayed on "Connecting" until it timed out, but it says I'm on the most current version which is total BS. I then flashed this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644) via Odin to see if that would help updating it OTA but it didn't. It still stopped at 27%. I've done a few factory resets and tried each method again after each time. Still nothing works.
Is there anything you can suggest to help?
What bootloader do you have ??
If you have either the official 4.3 or 4.4 loader. ..The flash will fail because those bootloaders cannot be overwritten. ..g

I did a factory reset before flashing that ROM via Odin.
My firmware is only 4.1.2 so I'm pretty sure I don't have either the 4.3 or 4.4 bootloader but I don't know which I have for certain. I do know I used the rom I linked to earlier to root my phone when I first rooted it. ChainFire AutoRoot if that helps.
I was looking at installing SaberKat 1.5 because it sounded like a good option due to the lack of bloat and a few tweaks.

Okay. ..
If you have the 4.1.2 loader that isn't the problem. ..
I'd just flash Zens 4.4.2 rom...and then you can retain your 4.1 loader... (good)...
Locate the TWRP recovery thread in development. ..and flash the new recovery via Odin....then flash Zens stock 4.4.2 rom....and done...g
Here ya go...see the first page of the thread. ..
Once you have TWRP...you can flash the rom above. ..or any 4.4 build...
