[Q] Aluminum Case for Samsung Galaxy S3 - Galaxy S III Accessories

I just bought this case from ebay /itm/271202882085?var=570157052795&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
The only problem is that it causes all signal to be lost. I've seen posts where people drill holes in the back of the case in order for the signal to work properly. I was just wondering if anyone has ever bought a similar case and have a work around for signal to work properly. Thanks!<3

Nope a colleague of mine has the same problem. Buy other case.

Do you have problems with NFC connection? Or only network signal?

I only have network connection problems. Is there any way to fix this or is the only to drill of small hole on the back of the aluminum back cover?

If you do not care about network then sure. But I want to be able to use network and the case at the same time and I cannot find any solutions so far.

Might not be worth the trouble but you could get someone with a lathe to cut out a new back cover out of a material that doesnt affect signal ( plastic , wood , bacon etc.) and give it a fake alu color coat. Gonna be diffcult to fasten the new back door but it might even make it more protective. Transparent plastic like perspex might look nice.
---------- Post added at 01:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 PM ----------
Another option would be to mould a backplate out of epoxy resin or whatever that stuff is called that ppl use for auto body work and making Stormtrooper suits. Use the bumper as the mould and use a dremel or sandpaper to reduce it to the thickness you need but leaving a bit of space where the screws hold the case together. Tbh I cannot think of any way to improve reception without replacing a majority of the metal with some other material.
Even just cutting out a shape out of the backplate and replacing it with plastic might do the job.

I have not bought this case.
For high quality bumper case, it will enhance the signal. But for some other bumper case, it will weaken the signal.
That's all

i'm considering this cover and have a question
some of the first phone models with built in antenna still had connectors on the back of the phone under the cover for external antenna. does SGS3 have such connectors? i see two rubber covers on back of the phone under the back cover. they are placed on top of the phone, on on the left corner, other on the right corner. could there be a connectors for antenna?

insteresting. I was planning to buy this case but I won't. Thanks your advice.

Or only network signal?

Budget metal bumper

I'm on a REALLY tight budget, and I've found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aluminum-Bu...VG/ref=sr_1_67?ie=UTF8&qid=1352551327&sr=8-67
Has somebody tried it before? Do the cover-buttons have a good response (is much more force needed to make them "click")? Any suggestions?
while it might provide a unique look to your phone, i'm not sure how much 'protection' a metal bumper will give.
once that aluminum meets concrete, it'll scratch/dent and it wont look as pretty.
I had an Element Case Vapor AR15-V when it was released for the iP4. I loved the look but it killed my reception..
I don't think/know if the S3 would fall victim to such an issue..

The aesthetic side of it is of no importance for me. On the reception issue, it was reportedly due to the antenna being linked to a section of the metal frame the iPhones had, so no problem here regarding the S3 i pressume.

Edit: I've seen these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Urban-Armor...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352595740&sr=1-3) around, and although they seem quite nice, they surpass my budget right now. Any cheaper version of sorts? I think composite could do the trick just as fine.
Does anybody know something similar to the Urban Armor Gear (cheaper and less fancy) that could be of use?
i've always wondered if those slide on thing in the front actually stays on properly or not... I kinda prefer to have the screw on type... i think it's kinda cool.. the only thing I worry about is I don't know if the camera lens would get scratched when i place it on the back.

I'm using this case on my Note 10.1, in fact I've used IVSO cases on my previous tabs also.
My OG Tab 7 was knocked off tables, couches, etc onto laminate floor/tiled flooring a few times, the only time it came out of the case was when it was knocked out of my hands as I was actually using it. Luckily, landed on a carpeted floor.
In these IVSO case's it is pretty safe from knocks or drops.
Better off getting a case that has a fastener on it or a clip than a magnet one, after viewing the online manual for the 10.1 it clearly says stay away from magnets.
I never use mine while in the case, not only does it attract dust it also has poorer reception with the s pen.
Going to get a better one when find a case without a magnet

Thin Cover Like iPad

Looking for some help. I've looked in many many places but haven't found a cover like the magnetic cover iPad users have. Is there such a cover for the Note 10.1? Looking for the thinnest cover I can find.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The thinnest cover will still be thicker than the iPad because we don't have the magnetic hinge that would allow only the front cover..
The Samsung cover is remarkably thin, but doesn't stay closed.
There are several trifold covers that have a back that then clips onto the corners of the table with a cut out for the pen., several ship from Hong Kong. Some on eBay, some on Amazon.com the stock is constantly changing.
I ended up getting one that is advertised ads unless thin by mistake. It uses an adhesive to stick to the back of the pad. I really DON'T like that. It also makes removing the pen difficult. Plus it doesn't have a slot to charge the tab without opening the cover. I had to cut one.
It has a fold over flap so that it doesn't open accidentally, but the cover is very floppy. I've only been using it a few weeks, but it just doesn't feel that solid.
In the end I'll probably go with a knockoff Samsung if I can find one that stays closed.
Sent from my GT-N8000 using Tapatalk HD
Agree with the above...the thinnest and sexiest is probably the Samsung magnetic book cover. I wasn't fond of it at first, but I've been using it over my i-Blason lately (which is also very nice but is no where near as thin). Lack of magnet to hold cover closed is really not an issue for me. If I am holding it it stays shut.

Guess I'll go for the Samsung cover .. hope it stays closed.
If you're going to buy a magnetic cover you should get the samsung one. Most other ones will probably cause problems with your wacom digitizer if the magnets get too close while you're using it.
I bought the Samsung white cover for £31 on Amazon, it just finishes the look of my tablet, love it. Jim
Samsung white cover with magnets works for me, I think that it can't have a magnetic closer option because it would interfere with the Wacom digitizer.

I have also ordered one online. The "vip" model. I am expecting it to arrive tomorrow together with the GNote 10.1. I will post pictures with the Note with the case on and off so you can evalutate if this one is ok for you or not
My Note should arrive tomorrow and i'll pretty soon get a cover for it. I really dislike Samsungs build quality, i could scratch the whole back of it in one day i guess .. Like many did with the S3. My Motorola razr i doesn't even show a scratch even if it has been dropped by my girlfriend once and i don't handle it too careful.
I think i'll go with the Samsung Diary cover. I don't want my tablet to be bulky just because the manufacturer can't use proper materials and i'm too afraid of scratching it. But the fact that it won't stay closed is a major drawback, seems like i won't get the allround case i need. I think i'll have a look if i can get the Anymode I-Band case in Germany, at least this one looks good in my opinion.

I bought one from crazyondigital on amazon. had it for months and am pretty happy. it handles portrait and landscape. on amazon and inexpensive.

The Samsung Book Cover is about the closest to the smart cover. However I have an iPad 3 also and that smart cover is dangerous... It is really slick and if you are not really careful it will detach itself...

As in update: I received a very cheap trifold magnetic cover that I ordered off of eBay similar to this. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=200899933118&index=6&nav=SEARCH&nid=87359384600
So far it is working fine. It has magnets to keep closed and my pen works fine for drawing.
It has volume, power and charging ports and buttons exposed and you can easily remove your pen. The only thing I wanted exposed was the headphone jack, but a simple hole punch fixed that. Certainly cheap enough.
Now for the warning. The stick on cases are much worse than I expected. They are stuck on pretty much permanently, so switching cases for different activities was not possible. I do that to have a keyboard sometimes. Now the really bad part, the adhesive is strong enough that you can separate the back from the tablet if you are not careful.
I did just that. Nothing breaks, the back of the tablet it's very flexible, but it is a real bear to get back together. Let's just say I know more about the inside off the tab than I would want to this stage in the warranty.

I feel an aluminum bumper on this phone will preserve the look and feel of thr all aluminum phone while still adding some protection
How is the reception with the bumper on? Is it made out of actual metal? Isn't the whole point of the plastic sides are for reception issues since aluminum causes reception issues?

Well, don't forget the plastic strips on side and back. One reason for them being there is avoiding reception problems a full aluminium body would provide. So with alu bumpers you could probably close that "reception gaps" and therefore get in reception trouble. But that's a guess on my side.
Doh!!!

You are absolutely correct. The fact that the HTC One is all aluminum completely went over my head! :silly:
So yeah, I guess an aluminum case might not be so bad on the One. I'll be interested in finding out.
Also, I tried to give you a "thanks" instead of this reply but I was told that I'm limited to 8 thanks a day (WTH!?).
Well the thread says to not mention the Draco case, but I will as I can confirm the aluminum does not hinder cell or GPS reception to an unusable state. Other aluminum bumpers in the future will most likely show similar effects.
At work (deep inside office building, connected to LTE; Scottsdale) --
W/o: -88 to -92 dbm
With: -90 to -95 dbm
I wish someone would start to make them
Bumper or regular aluminium case would be awesome I wish some company would do make one

Off topic!!!! Talking about iPhones....lets ban this dude. lol Jk.
I think having an aluminum bumper would help dissipate heat, like a heat sink or something.

Although I don't think it would affect GPS.

Hi,
I found an aluminium case here:
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=171032934102
It is not a bumper though.
I dream of an aluminium bumper for 30 bucks but it probably never gonna happen.
I don't know if i should get the draco design bumper in black or red
I know it's blasphemy but all three of these cases would be great. I for one would love to see a nice screw together machined aluminum case.
And, before you call and ask the company who makes the case I posted back and front pictures of..... it is over 200 dollars. It is called Black Ops. It does look cool though.
I think the issue with aluminum cases for the HTC one would be difficult because all the edges are slanted towards the screen. If you look at the poetic atmosphere case for an example, in order to be able to press the buttons, they made the case slant towards the screen as well. With aluminum, getting the perfect matching slant could be a problem. I guess an aluminum case that was straight without any slants towards the screen but inside had padding to match the slant could be achieve but that would alter the original ergonomic design of the HTC One's slanted edges concept. Just my 2 cents

Aluminum battery cover for the Nexus 5

Hi guys,
I was searching for a aluminum battery cover that replaces the original plastic one, Never found it. How cool would it be to have one of those? I'd even void my warranty to have one of these.
Does any of you know where I find these? Yet a better question, would anyone buy it?
Cause if there is none, I'm gonna make sure to find a company that makes it for me.

Will the aluminum cover still keep my NFC and wireless charging? If not, then it's too much like the HTC One. I'll keep mine the way it is and apply a dbrand backing to it lol.
It should keep it, add small edges with plastic to it

The Nexus 5 back cover is not a single piece of plastic like a samsung phone. It has 4 magnets, antennas for the Wi-Fi, MIMO and GPS, NFC and wireless charging cables, and the vibration motor (source). I doubt anyone is making replacement since it cost too much to design a clone that only offer alternate color or material.
Why not try a skin with a brushed titanium finish. Dbrand has them, perhaps others do too.

Well said. I think we can safely see we'll never see this for the above reasons, it would be much too expensive to design a metal back plate accessory that takes all of that into account.
Well, I could move those things from my old cover to the alu one. Another reason to have aluminum is that the your hand will absorb the heat. Thermal throttle issues will be also decreased. Next week I'm going to a company to sort things out like the price etc.
Will my warranty void if I only take off the backcover?

If you have a wireless charger, take a piece of aluminum foil and put it on top. Then try to charge you phone. Even with a single unfolded sheet, it will most likely not work (sure doesn't work with my Nexus charger). Now imagine the interference with all the other antennas connected to the back.
Just cover it with this and see: http://www.amazon.com/JVCC-AF20-Aluminum-Foil-Linered/dp/B0057Z9L0S

Depends on how much of a dirt bag you want to be and if they are able to tell when you send it in.

It's only the backcover the middle is gonna stay plastic. The antennas work through the sides.

What's up with that? What could possible go wrong when taking off battery cover. We could do this on every phone years ago.
