Just got the verizion HTC one, it came with sense 5.0 software version 2.10.605.1 android 4.3. It has the Kitkat update ready to install but I'm wanting to s-off and root. I looked at rumrunner but on download page wasn't my software version. I'm familiar with adb, rooting, flashing, etc. Just curious as to which method and if should go ahead and take the ota. Thanks

its good you did not take the update, you will use a software called "firewater soff" there is a site just google "firewater soff" once at the site you will use the temp-root method. it will get you s-off and once you are s-off flash a custom recovery and then a rom with root and your good to go. btw for this software you will use adb. it will give you two downloads 1) firewater and 2) temp-root, for me on a mac i place those in my folder with adb and then run the commands as prompted on the official site, pretty easy and once done your good to go! and rumrunner will NOT work with 4.3 only firewater will

Thank you for your Time
Have they found a root method for 3.70 yet?
i dont know if they have yet...
Yes they have. Zikronix has a thread on how to do it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Will unrevoked work?
No it doesn't...the unrevoked dev team is working on one.
leenypost was refering to this thread:
[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Root! The Final Frontier Edition - Upd. 12.21.10
i think they have but im not the one that wants to do it, i cant cuz my other evo got rooted with Simple root so i didnt have to do it the long Way but i dont have that phone anymore. Any takers?
All you need to do is follow the link ICEReaction posted. It's very straightforward.
just downgrade using a stock RUU then use old root methods
im VERY noob wen it comes to cmd, shell cd to etc. and all that i guess the hard part is the Command prompt i can open but wen changing or anything i get path not found etc

This will not work. If your phone is new and came with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 it is a no go. If you have an older EVO you can flash a rom with a lower SW version and then use an RUU that matches that version if you like and then use unrevoked to root... But that's way more work to then get back up to 3.70 than just following the supplied thread.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Hello,
I bought this phone in January, at a local store (shouldn't be attached to any carrier or operator). Still, I didn't get the 2.3 update like the rest of my friends.
I asked HTC support and they say it's branded to an operator called Hutch (which i never heard of).
So currently, the local store never heard 2.3 was out so they are no use
and I'm looking for a suggestion on how to debrand the phone \ get the original 2.3 Sense 2.1.
My phone is not rooted (couldn't find a proper guide for 1.37.771.3 software version) and i guess it's s-on.
(there is no logo\splash screen or any other noticeable branding included).
Thanks in advance.
Hutch I assume is Hutchinson 3G, otherwise Three UK or just 3!
Hi,
Your firmware is ok to root, no need to downgrade. Follow these steps, and you will have Gingerbread in no time. I'd recommend downloading the RUU first as its 200+MB
1). Download Visionary+
2). Install to phone & run (temp root then perm root)
3). Download jkoljo's ENG S-OFF tool & run
4). Download jkoljo's Radio S-OFF tool & run
5). Download the Gingerbread RUU & run.

i guess by the file date it's the leaked release and not the official one, does it matter?
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
No, its the official release. I just got it early
Thanks
It took time, after doing all those backups.
But everything is working, better than ever (it wiped everything, but i'm good with that) and I have root access (i think).
Thank you for the simplified instructions.
Well, silly for me to think the root will stay.
trying to downgrade:

if i pemanent root my device before i take a initial backup of my current factory rom i would not be able to restore it whenever i want to give my phone for service.
I will have to download one from a site. But i want to use again my own one.
You could just grab one of the ruus that are on shipped-roms.com that contains your current rom. It's a pity to have such a good device and not root it... You lose functionality.... Also you can't flash custom roms.... Our devs are by far better than htc's
Think that people even s-off and send their phone in for service (after returning it to perfect factory condition via ruu).

I am confused
What is ruu?
And s-off?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
RUU stands for ROM update utility. It's an upgrade pack from htc. It contains ROM, radio, bootloader and recovery(in other words all the software bits required for your phone to run) to "update" your phone. These are all factory ones that are released from htc to help users upgrade their phones to the latest official software. Their components are found also on the OTA updates. We use them after when we want to return the phone to factory default state after we have flashed custom versions of any of the above, in order to return for service. S-on/off indicates a security status set by HTC. S-on is the standard for retail phones and it means that the /system and /data are not writable when the phone is operating. In that case we use tools like adb to do so , through pc. S-off disables this security measure allowing further customization of the device. It is also said that root+s-off = ultimate root, because then the phone is fully accessible and customizable

thank you for the answer
should i trust the ruu from this site shipped-roms.com? do we know that is the factory one?
and which one is for my hct desire? in this site there are more than one ruu for my device. how do i know which one is for my device?
And a final question
What will be the profit of making my device root? would i be able to have more software?
thank you in advanced for any help
The ruus on shipped-roms are the factory ones and are tested. There are many roms, because there are many updates, and because some of them are branded, which means that they are specifically designed for a specific carrier. Usually what you need is the latest WWE RUU. When rooted you can use some extra apps, and flash custom roms(and recoveries/radios too)

There are full tutorials in the desire development sub forum. The latest ruu is the one that came to you over the air and its froyo with standard sense. You don't need to install any ruu, as long as you don't want to send it in for service. If you want to try sense 3(its still im beta phase) you can try one of the custom roms found in the desire index thread(in the development subforum). You must first become familiar with these terms: adb, fastboot, ext, a2sd, a2sd+,data2sd/ext/whatever, hboot, root, s-off, alpharev, partition, recovery, wipe, backup, flash, dalvik cache,RUU, usb brick, rosie, apk, updater-script, update.zip, radio, ril, amend, edify, data++, amonRA, clockworkmod, AOSP, MIUI and others, but there are enough to bring you in the world of Android on Desire. Be patient and search for each and every one of these.... Everything has been explained on the forums and the tuts in great detail. Dont be afraid to use Google search, or the xda one

So now that HTC has released on the HTC Dev site, the Droid Inc. What is the best/easiest way to root?
Option A) Downgrade and root
Option B) Use HTC Dev tool to unlock the bootloader and flash SU.zip. After that then flash CWM and then whatever ROM I want to run.
Is Option B even a viable option?
My DInc is rooted with CM7, however, my wife's has 2.3.4 stock. She wants to try Miui. I don't mind doing the downgrade and root but if using the approved HTC Dev tool is working, why not?

From what i have heard the HTC unlock method is not true s-off. In fact when you look in hboot it still says s-on but above that it says unlocked. From what i have been told you cant flash boot images thru hboot, and it also updates your hboot version making some flashables not work anymore. I would go with the downgrade method and then use unrevoked to get true s-off. I think it will be less hassle and you will be happier in the end. Not to many people are working on things for this phone anymore meaning allot of stuff will probably never get updated to work with the new hboot.
Uber-noob here.
I went the way of Option B the other day, and I still have S-On. As of now I am rooted & running CM7.
Hello, if anyone out there can help me, it'd be very appreciated. I bought an old Evo for $20, brand new almost. But the last time I had an Evo I was able to root it. Can't remember the software information on it, but I did in fact root it. I used the rEVOlutionary method but it seems to no longer be in service. I've also tried the unrEVOked method and I get the same issues. Can anyone be of any assistance? Really want to bring this phone back, I love the Evo!
Thanks.
Unlock-code tools/websites have been sabotaged
Sprint/HTC/Google have sabotaged Revolutionary.io. In fact, my research shows that they have broken/taken-over all unlock-code-computing tools/websites other than HTCdev.com. Fortunately, HTCdev works for rooting your particular configuration -- and probably ONLY for your particular configuration. Do NOT try to use the Captain Throwback's Method (as described at AndroidForums' "revised-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide") or you will end up like me -- stuck depending on tools/websites that Sprint/HTC/Google have sabotaged. I'm a newbie, and am not competent to provide you with further guidance.
I saw this too. After doing resrarch myself as well I found the same things. This is very irritating, but will just have to deal with unrooted stock OS...
You can still root EVO 4G
You can root your HTC EVO 4G running Android 2.3.5, hboot 2.18 using instructions from the below-listed HTCEvoHacks website (which relies on HTCdev.com). But you MUST stop after you obtain root (and before attaining S-OFF). The rest of the instructions describe how to throw the system back to Android 2.3.3 by installing a stock PC36100.img file, and then using revolutionary.io to obtain S-OFF. But Google/Sprint have sabotaged those tools: So don't go there. Worse still, down-dating will spoil your access to Google's Play Store. Google tormented me for weeks before allowing me to reaccess its Play Store's apps.

Once you have root, you can (and should) install a custom recovery. HtcEvoHacks has website instructions for installing a custom recovery. But I installed mine by using an app called ROM Manager. I used ROM Manager to install ClockWorkMod (aka. CWM) and to perform a full nandroid backup. Absent S-OFF, I believe that our ability to flash new ROMs is restricted. But I'm not sure to what extent.
