Hey guys, I've been having problems with 4.4.2 KitKat ROMs. I'm not a newb when it comes to flashing ROMs, but whenever I install a 4.4.2 ROM, I lose my service and can't make calls or use mobile data. Now im guessing it has to do with the radio/modem. Now when it comes to radios/modems, im a newb.
Is there something different about 4.4.2 ROMs that I'm not aware about? I've flashed plenty of other ROMs before, but never had this problem.
If any of you guys can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
Here is my about phone screen. Next to baseband it said nb4. What does yours say?

I'm having a problem that I cant figure out also. I had Beanstalk, working good.. Then someone posted a beanstalk 0414 link from AT&T . As soon as I did this I had this unresolvable problem where many (not all) cant call me or text me. I can text them and call them. When I call my cell from a desk phone, it says "one moment" or something it gets cut off then it rings my phone. I tried odin'ing nb4 and it's there but my phone just doesn't something.
I went back and odin'ed the stock rom, rerooted etc.. but no difference. same issue. Now I put the original working beanstalk on my phone and its fine other then the issues noted above. I'm in south florida, I wonder if there is an issue with NB4 down here.
PS. When I odin'ed back Stock, my Baseband was still nb4, is this correct? the modem wont change?

This procedure will work, I updated my modem to NB4 before kitkat and had no data loss whatsoever after upgrading to kitkat.
Running Fenny's stock /rooted Rom with no problems. Just follow directions in op. Also running Philz touch recovery.

Installed NB4 Modem while on 4.2.2 and it worked. Thanks for everyones help. Signal seems to be the same, if not better! Now my recovery is acting wonky, but its not cause of the modem, I know that for sure.... that should be no problem though, I was just inexperienced with modems and needed help with that. Thanks!

I live in central FL and NB4 works perfect. As for rerooting you would have to flash back to the original modem for it to change. Before you do that, try flashing a different kernel like ktoonzes

Hi xda, I hope your Friday is going well.
EDIT: My calling problem was not fixed. I reflashed 4.4.2 NB4 Modem (twice to make sure it stuck) and the calling still does not work. Did something just completely fry when I had CM11 on this thing? Any ideas anybody? I don't even hear a dial tone if I am the one dialing out, the call still goes through though.
Everything below was my original post which has been resolved, didn't want to start a new thread though.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TL;DR: My T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4 (SGH-M919) is unable to boot stock rom, and I am unable to enter recovery. I get seandroid messages trying to do either. Fortunately, the phone can enter download mode. What do I need to do or flash to get this phone booting again? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and help out.
Below is the long story with details:
1. The phone was given to me running stock Android/TouchWiz. Unfortunately, I do not know what version but I assume it was whatever was the latest version as of late April.
2. I rooted the phone using Odin and CF Auto Root.
3. I created a backup of this newly rooted stock rom.
4. I flashed Cyanogenmod 11
5. After a while I discovered that I could answer calls but I could not hear nor be heard during the call.
6. I restored to the stock rom using the backup I made in step 3.
7. The calling issue continued, so I figured I would just unroot and go back to like-new factory settings. This way I could take the phone in to be repaired or whatever.
8. Following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336392, I attempted to flash k0nane's UVUAMDL Official Tar
9. Odin got stuck connecting to my device, I believe it was because I did not run Odin as admin. I pulled the battery and repeated this step while running Odin as admin.
10. The flash was successful, however during the phone's first boot it got stuck on the T-Mobile splash screen for about 30 minutes or so. I pulled the battery again.
11. Anytime I put the battery back in the phone, it will attempt to boot and hang at the T-Mobile screen, I believe this is a boot loop?
Looking online, people suggest going into recovery and wiping but I cannot enter recovery. I just get the seandroid not enforcing messages. I'm very hesitant to keep looking through the forums and trying things because I feel like I'm on the edge of bricking the phone if I haven't already.
I don't think the flash was successful because it wouldn't give you those messages, and you would need to flash either 4.3 or 4.4.2 not 4.2.2 (MDL) Try flashing a newer firmware version.. If it was updated to the newest then I would try 4.4.2

Ok so I flashed the wrong rom then. I hate to ask but where could I find a 4.4.2 stock rom? I just found a rom I believe will work but the file is titled "M919UVUFNB4_M919TMBFNB4_TMB" not sure if this is 4.4.2 or newer?

This is where I obtained the rom above that I wasn't sure was the newest.
I flashed this rom and everything worked, thank you both.
Any ideas on what happened with the phone call issue? My friend that gave me the phone said it was working just fine when she had it, so I assume somehow the rooting or CM11 screwed something up? Weirdly, calling through WiFi works just fine.

The only thing that can foul up your phone like that would be a bad cm flash or preflash, it's super important to read and read again, check the thread for support from members and resolutions to problems before you consider the build for your phone. Ask questions and double check everything before you take the plunge.
I assume that the calling problem is fixed, a corrupt modem may cause that and re flashing the modem will correct this.

I flashed the NB4 tar from sammobile twice, calls still not working. I feel like I'm not flashing the correct thing or something.
Using the Android System Info app, every entry has something in it except for Radio. It just says "Radio: unknown". Does this have anything to do with anything?

My friend gave the phone to me. She got an S5 and didn't want to bother with selling this S4 so she just gave it to me. It was completely pure and stock, with calls working. Something screwed up during the CM11 flash I guess.
WiFi calls still work, everything works except calls.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I flashed the sammobile NB4 tar twice via PDA in Odin as usual. For the modem, I flashed the modem bin via Phone in Odin twice. Thank you for your help, by the way.

I flashed both Fenny's firmware and a baseband he also provided. Did both twice, and calls are still not working.
I was doing some research on this whole "Radio: Unknown" thing and I started seeing threads talking about flashes corrupting the phone's EFS partition. I never made a backup of mine, so I have nothing to restore to. Is it possible that I could use someone else's EFS backup and then use it to restore my phone's EFS partition? Does it work like that?

Flashing modems and such with a custom rom installed often fails. Did you try doing a restore to full stock using Odin?
It sounds like the phoen has Android 4.4 on it already so you will need to flash the full 4.4 package (can't go back to 4.3 or 4.2)
Try and, boot hte phoen without modifying it, and see if calls work then.
The EFS thing is about the IMEI number. Does your device show an IMEI number in settings? If it does, your EFS isn't the problem. If it doesn't....well then yeah. Problem is pretty much narrowed down.

I have restored the phone to full stock and have been using it that way since I started this thread. Everything is just like fresh from the factory (except for the knox counter being tripped obviously). Calls still didn't work. An IMEI number still shows up the phone's settings. Using WiFi calling hasn't been that bad at all, but I'm screwed in the case of a real emergency with this thing.
Hello
I have SGH-M919. First, it had stock ROM, stock firmware, and it was SIM locked to T-Mobile, so I unlocked it with SRS server service (I live outside the US, so labs in my area didn't have the tools to unlock it, since it's only a US variant. Also, other methods of unlocking did not work for me, unfortunately).
In the unlocking process I had to flash custom modem file with Odin (it was required for SRS to work). After that, I flashed CWM and CM11 and everything worked fine except the GPS. It didn't work: no GPS satellites were found.
How can I resolve this issue? Thanks.

Just flash the stock modem since you said it was modified, unless its still needed.. However, many users have lost GPS after flashing aosp/cm.. The fix is simple. First make a nandroid backup, flash a touchwiz ROM, get a GPS lock, and then restore your nandroid.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I already tried flashing stock rom but GPS didn't work (it did work before the unlocking), so it has to be a modem problem. I couldn't find a stock modem file anywhere.
Currently I'm downloading another stock ROM, so I will be able to bring up lbstestmode which might fix my issue.
EDIT:
The new stock ROM works fine, and the GPS was able to find signal. So, I as ou suggested and recovered the Nandroid I made before through the recovery, but now I can't find GPS again. What can I do?

I have searched for stock modem and found this.
Unfortunately, I do have a KNOX counter in download mode so it doesn't fit.
This guide links to another modem file (that works with the KNOX bootloader), but it is for MK2, and I need BN4.. What can I do?
EDIT:
The issue is FIXED! The GPS works perfectly! Ultimately, I did install the MK2 modem and although I have 4.4.2 BN4 it works just fine.
Thanks for everyone who helped me.

Still, the MK2 firmware just works better for me.
Also, if I can't flash the fixed NB4 firmware because the bootloader has Knox, how will it help me if I install the non-fixed version (which is included in the firmware)? I'd be stuck with the bad NB4! There's no way to install the fixed NB4 if I have bootloader with Knox, if I understand this whole thing correctly.
P.S I am not intending to argue or anything, I am just writing what happened to me. So, if someone has the same problem and he googles it he will be able to find some useful info that took me about 2 days to find (and your generous help in this thread, of course!

I noticed that I was getting bad cellular reception in an area that should have full mobile coverage. So I flashed the 4.4.2 fixed BN4 modem and the reception is way better (from one bar to 3 or 4), and the GPS is still working.
So, the BN4 modem did flash although I have bootloader with Knox (so it isn't supposed to work according the the modem thread)
P.S. I'm quite confused. Sorry for the noob question, but what's the difference between ROM and firmware? Is the firmware just a package which includes the ROM, bootloader and modem?
I am looking for a way to downgrade from stock 4.4.2 to 4.3. I have read you can't downgrade with odin once your bootloader has been updated....
However, can you on 4.4.2
1) Install a custom recovery
2) Root
3) De-Knox.
4) Nandroid backup rooted deknoxed 4.4.2 (just to be safe).
Then,
Install a rooted stock 4.3 rom such as the one found in this page:
http://www.droidviews.com/install-android-4-3-leaked-firmware-on-att-galaxy-s3-note-2-galaxy-s4-s4-active/
Starting at the text "For AT&T S3 Users with Root and Custom Recovery" which links to a rooted 4.3 zip file?
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23196940996968760
Seems like this might work?
You can flash older roms. Just not older firmware and modems.

Thanks for the response.
Just to be clear.
Refurbished i747 shipped with 4.4.2 installed
ne4 bootloader
ne4 modem
Can I still flash a touchwiz 4.3 stock rom provided I don't overwrite the modem or bootloader? If so, will the touchwiz 4.3 rom work with the ne4 modem? Seems like the old rom may not play well with a new modem.
Again, my main goal is to use Drivelink app to use mirrorlink with my car radio head. Drivelink only works on 4.3.
Thanks for your help and patience.
I was thinking of trying this rom with ne4 modem and bootloader....

Should be perfectly fine. As for how well the modem works with it, it's never been much of an issue. People have been running mixed builds since the first update. It's possible it might not work quite as well, but I doubt any differences would be great enough to notice.
As for your Drive link, is it limited to 4.3 on the app side, or is it more of a rom issue? If the app simply isn't compatible, not much can be done there. But someone (I think in the S3Rx thread just found out how to get Chromecast to work. Maybe that would help your app on a 4.4.2 rom?

I have messed my phone up bad trying to get gps to lock. I have come to the conclusion after odin back to stock 4.2 and still cant get lock that its a hardware issue. Now for the life of me I cant get back to lolipop. No matter what i do i cant get my radio to update. is there a place to just download modems? I have never had this much trouble. IM so confused and about firmware, baseband, and roms at this point. Tell me the quickest easiest way to get to rooted GPE with the latest modem from MDL that is what i am back to at this point.
Have you tried flashing latest firmware? NK2. Don't use MDL modem. To update modem (if you don't want to flash latest firmware) shut phone down manually, reboot into download mode, flash modem, remove battery, reboot straight into download mode and reflash modem. Yes, I believe there is a thread that has modems
No I haven't. But It updated ota to nh7 whatever that is

Ah. Then going back to 4.2 would definitely cause trouble. Do the double NK2 flash and see it you get back to normal.
