Hello-
I flashed Beanstalk Build 4.4.247 using Nexus Root Tool Kit & for got to include gapps in zips to be flashed. Problem is I cannot access custom recovery (TWR) not matter what I try- including holding down all combos of volume & power buttons. I can access the Android System Recovery and use "apply update from adb" option. Sideload goes well in sending update package and opening update package. At verifying update package, I keep getting "Installation aborted".
What gives hear? Any thoughts? Cannot do anything w/phone because no install wizard.
Thanks greatly.
[EDIT] Another avenue is is there a way to get Nexus Root Tool to recognize it w/out debugging enabled or enable debugging w/out having access to settings?
You dont have to enable usb debugging to use adb in recovery. Maybe its a bad download. Download the rom again and retry. Did you flash it manually or using a toolkit (manually is way better and not so hard)? If all fails maybe try CWM recovery instead of TWRP.

I flashed using Root Tool. Currently, the phone turns on, boots up, shows time date LTE battery icon etc in the status bar. However, I can go no further because I keep getting messages related to no gapps, for example "setup wizard stopped". I cannot access Nexus Root Tool because no debugging yet. Also, can't get into custom recovery in this state.
Can I install CMW in this state? I don't know why gapps won't install w/sideload.

You can enter bootloader right? Just use fastboot flash recovery then.

To flash new recovery.img cwm/twrp. Then you can just dirty flash your rom and then gapps through recovery.
I would suggest twrp with easier menu. You can use adb sideload or just use usb otg to flash it.

I'm still getting the "installation aborted" message even when I try to sideload a recovery image. I want to try and push a file to the phone and use the usb flash option. When I try "adb push rom.zip /data/media/0/" or /data/media/, I get error: closed.
I believe the "error: closed" is probably related to the install aborted message.
Does any one know if the above is the proper push location to send a file to the sdcard?

Why do you want to transfer recovery.img to sdcard? Just use fastboot command from pc to flash your recovery img.
If you're using Windows and got unlocked bootloader Get this ADB & Fastboot Installer
Get the latest ClockworkMod Recovery or TWRP
Then use the fastboot command:
fastboot device - show your device serial number
then
fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img
After that you can just adb sideload using the custom recovery

I tried this and it said "insufficient permissions for device" in ADB. My phone randomly rebooted and gets stuck on the boot logo, but everything on my sdcard got deleted. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus if that helps
If it's only the kernel causing problems, the easiest would be to run "fastboot flash boot <name of boot.img here>" from fastboot?(the original boot.img from the rom he's using would be found inside the zip file)
But if you screwed something else up in the process, you may need to flash the entire rom again from the recovery. If you are using cwm recovery, I believe it allows you to mount storage, so you can just move the rom file from the computer, and if you are using twrp, they have an option to sideload(under advanced), where you can connect you phone to your pc and run "adb sideload <name of rom.zip file here>" and it will install it right away.

this will not work, not with cwm nor with twrp, at this point; likely, it will never work as we don't have removable storage.
Then just use the sideload, it works quite well for me.

adb works fine with TWRP if you have updated adb drivers/adb daemon.
guess fastboot flashing images also eludes you.
so no, you're not in the grave.
*note* thanks for necroing a thread from December.
No, in bootloader its fine.
And apparently (if It wasn't a fluke) I think i booted normally , and having no rom it just stood there, and adb worked.
that saved me
TWRP dissapoints . have to look for replacement
stuck in recovery
so Im stuck in a similar situation
before installing a ROM which instructed to wipe the device, i did so, in fact i over did it.. wiped data/cache/davlik/system and internal storage
the same storage which had the ROM that i was supposed to install after wiping it.
I felt very dumb, but now stuck with the bootloader / fastboot / and TWRP recovery .. the TWRP recovery version i have HAS the adb sideload feature
which i've tried to install the Cyanogen ROM using ./adb sideload filename.zip , which hasnt work for Cyanogen but worked for the GApps after that ( I thought that was kinda weird).
the sideload command goes thru the sending of the entire ROM to the phone, but it never installs correctly..
NOW im stuck
any suggestions or help on how i can do it with what appears to me to be as fastboot / adb side load / and recovery options"??
thank you very much in advance

My Sprint Galaxy Nexus Jellybean is not rooting and will not flash a recovery. Here is what i did before the problem
Installed the Samsung Drivers
Installed and set up ADB and SDK tools
unlocked my bootloader
flashed TWRP recovery
Made a Nandroid Backup
flashed a rooted rom that was apparently for ICS (but I didn't know at the time)
These were all per qbking77's root method for Sprint Galaxy Nexus. After I flashed the rom I waited for 20 minutes for my phone to reboot and it never did. So I pulled the battery and went back into the recovery. I restored my original backup and rebooted successfully. I decided to attempt flashing the rom (that I didn't know wasn't meant for my software) again. This time when i went into recovery mode, the picture of the android with the caution symbol appeared, meaning that there was no recovery found. Now when I attempt to reflash TWRP recovery or any recovery for that matter (Now using the Galaxy Nexus toolkit for Jellybean) the program says
sending 'recovery' <xxxx KB>
FAILED <remote: Invalid command>
finished. total time: 0.012s
An Error Occurred.
and on the phone side for TWRP it says FASTBOOT STATUS - download 0055d000
and for Clockwork mod touch it says FASTBOOT STATUS - download 004c8000
Before I do anything but plug my phone into the computer, the phone says FASTBOOT STATUS - FAILInvalid Command
Since this started happening I have tried
Re-Locking and unlocking the bootloader
Uninstalling and reinstalling the toolkit
uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers
Factory resetting my phone
Is my phone just unrootable now? Please someone help!

The "picture of the android with the caution symbol" is the stock recovery. You booted into android after restoring your nandroid. During that boot, android automatically reflashed the stock recovery which overwrote TWRP. To prevent this, you need to rename or remove either the stock recovery image or the script that will flash it on boot. Look at the 101 & FAQ post linked in my signature to find out where these files are.
As for unable to flash a custom recovery, don't use a toolkit. Just use fastboot from the commandline.

just remount /system on recovery, either by adb shell, either by the recovery menu after fastboot flash. boot the recovery directly from bootloader.
after /system is rw, through 'adb shell', custom recoveries have a pre-rooted/busyboxed environment, which allows you to do maintenance. this is the mount command to run in adb shell:
'mount -o rw /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system /system'
then just remove the files, 'umount /system' when you're done, reboot.

Thanks all you guys but what actually ended up happening was I successfully booted into clockworkmod touch recovery since that was the only one my phone hadn't blocked yet. While in recovery i flashed supersu (the right version) and rebooted. It asked if I wanted to remove the files that flash stock recovery on boot and I selected yes. Well that didn't do jack crap, so with my newly acquired superuser powers, I deleted the files i needed to. Then I tried to flash another recovery, but they were still giving me errors. So here is the process I took completely out of luck and hopefulness that I knew what I was doing. From the command prompt with my phone in fastboot, I typed "fastboot flash recovery cwmt.img". this gave me the same "fastboot <remote: invalid command>" error, so I typed the same command and it once again gave me the "sending xxxxkb" message where it would sit on that same line until I killed the program. So I did kill the program and opened another command prompt in the same folder. I typed the same command for the third time, and everything went smoothly from there. I'm currently rooted and running Cyanogenmod 10. Once again, thanks to everyone who helped I greatly appreciate it.

Hello XDA, I got my Galaxy Nexus stock and OTA upgraded it to 4.1.1 Jellybean. I unlocked and rooted the phone and while installing roms I accidentally formatted and factory reseted my phone. I can get into boot loader, and I have CWM installed. If I could just move a rom onto the phone I could boot it. Problem is I cant figure out how to. Keep in mind I am also using a mac. Can anyone help me figure out how to push a rom zip onto the sdcard? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You can abd push from a custom recovery
Alright so USB debugging isnt on but I can still use adb commands? How?
You have to boot into a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and use adb commands.
for ex. adb push NameOfRom.zip /sdcard/
I just tried that and my terminal returned
device not found
Don't mount anything don't do anything special in recovery at all.
You're booted into recovery?
Also...I found when I wasn't using naked drivers that it took ~30 seconds for ADB to actually be recognized.
Maybe wait a minute and try again.
If not unplug and plug in.
I can use fastboot commands and it it recognized in fastboot, can I flash a stock rom from this mode?

If you're using fastboot...that means you're not in custom recovery.
Navigate to recovery in that menu.
Or use fastboot boot ______________.img to boot into a custom recovery if you have one downloaded and in your platform tools directory.
But yes, you COULD do that.
But I wouldn't yet.
You'll lose all of your data/apps/etc.
There are Google factory images for the GSM & Verizon versions

You don't flash fastboot images via CWM. If you have CWM installed & you're booted in to bootloader (fastboot) mode use the volume keys to reboot into recovery

Go into recovery and transfer a new Rom download to your phone if you have a computer. There is an option to transfer files inside recovery.

Attached is clockworkmod touch recovery for gsm galaxy nexus, maguro. Phone in bootloader mode, open a terminal, cd to directory of fastboot and where you move this file to, type fastboot devices to verify device is connected, then "fastboot boot CWMT6023.img", without the quotes of course. This will temporarily allow you to use clockworkmod recovery, and thus adb, without having it on your device once you have selected "reboot now".
And if that didn't help, try consulting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895, since i'm thinking you haven't used fastboot in a terminal, but only know it's 'mode', and may need help with drivers.
You also might want to consider just straight out flashing cwm recovery, since YOU NEED TO MAKE BACKUPS!

sorry, i got cwm. but what does fastboot have to do with cwm? i can't use cwm to restore because files can't be sent from computer to it.
as of fastboot in terminal, it seems the phone not connected to computer. is there anything has to do with my drivers? "fastboot device" command shows <waiting for device>
I gave you that link to set up drivers more than anything else. If you already have cwm, boot to it and now you can adb push a rom.zip to your sdcard and install it, wipe caches and perhaps a factory reset [if you're changing to a different rom], OR, you can first try and wipe cache and advanced, dalvik cache to see if that fixes the bootloop.

But please read my earlier post, in order to use adb, usb debugging mode must be enabled in android settings.
Mine is disabled, and i can't enable it now.

If you think that then you have no idea on how adb works...
That is ONLY applicable when Android is running. As it's not, it's irrelevant...

ADB should work in your custom recovery regardless of USB debugging being enabled or disabled.
I can't tell you how many times I have rebooted into recovery, wiped, then realized I forgot to put a file on my sdcard that I wanted to flash. I then use adb to push the file(s) from within the recovery.
Edit: I really need to refresh prior to responding.
so i can't get adb working because of the driver? thats why i got "waiting for device" when pushing file to phone?
edit: i've installed all the required drivers, it's not my 1st time doing it. MAYBE, this computer never connected to my gnex before, as i've formatted it a few days ago. So the gnex driver was not properly installed.. Is it possible?
If that version of cm 10 is for 4.2.2., then i think you may have an issue accessing adb without first getting the rsa verification, even in recovery (but im not sure). Looks like your only other option would be to fastboot flash stock images. And of course it sounds like driver issues, especially if your fastboot is not even working. Again, that link I posted will get you back up and running. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
Hi all,
It seems I come back a n00b every few years.
I rooted my Zenfone 2 to remove some clutter and guess what I did today? I updated. Didn't know that would brick my phone but well here I am.
I followed these steps:
http://www.asus-zenfone.com/2015/06/how-to-update-ota-without-bootloop-on-rooted-zenfone2.html
Only to find that it wouldn't boot.
Went into recovery and tried to factory reset... went on for more than 15 minutes (I didn't want to stop the process....). I then had to hard reset then boot into recovery and tried to wipe cache which yielded nothing...
BTW, I think the failed wipe and reset messed up permissions as fastboot yields an error (even though the "flash recovery" bit seems to work).
I tried installing TWRP and it only boots back into fastboot. Reinstall the recovery from the link above and I can go back into recovery but can't seem to use any of the functions.
Any ideas?
p.s. I did do a few searches. Can't find anything specific about
I also tried using the adb sideload to sideload official firmware but it yields "error: device not found" and then goes back into regular recovery...

Have you installed all your drivers correctly?
In TWRP, have you gone into advanced and selected ADB Sideload? I've also had issues with sideloading, I think it's a TWRP issue though.
Here's what you can try:
Boot into TWRP and make sure the phone is detected on the PC.
open up adb
type: adb devices
hit enter
your device should be listed
type: adb push -p rom.zip /sdcard0/
-for push, it's just the command to push files to your phone. Alternatively, pull is for taking files from your phone (in the event you can't boot up and need a certain file)
-for -p, it just means show progress, so in CMD you'll see a percentage sign which is always a good thing to know
-for rom.zip you type in the location of the file
-for /sdcard0/ you can leave that, as that is the send destination and should land right in your main folder.
And once the file is transferred over, install through TWRP.
Wipe Dalvik/Cache.
Reboot system.
Profit.
If all this doesn't work, try a microsd card with the file on it.
EDIT: I just realized you meant you meant stock recovery. In that case...it should still allow you to adb sideload, but I'm not sure. As long as you can still use ADB, you can follow my instructions above.
adb push yields "error: closed"
adb sideload says it needs adb 1.0.32 to do operation...
Try using microSD, download the latest firmware on asus website, then rename the zip to MOFD_UPDATE.zip and copy it to your microSD then go to recovery mode and it'll install the update. it took sometime be patient

in my experience, it automatically install the zip if i go to recovery
Update: Sideload worked and I've been back to stock since. Didn't want to flash because I was ok with stock but didn't want the clutter. Will find another stable firmware if need be.
Thanks again for the help!
