Some lights about not-oficial android upgrade - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I dont know if there is a specific part of the forum for this problem, so I posted it here.
Well, I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Trend (GT S7560) that came with Android 4.0.
I've been reading around that you can upgrade a device with a newer Android, even if it is not oficial.
I'd like to know how can update my phone to Android 4.1 or 4.2, if this would be faster (less lag) and this process will void the warranty.
Thanks in advance

Eventual custom roms ?

Hello,
This phone looks really interesting, but I don't think Samsung will care about it after the promised 2.2 update. Furthermore its predecessor, the Galaxy, suffered from both a total lack of custom roms.
So my question is do you think there will be good custom roms for this phone for newer android versions ? Is it possible (eventual problems with drivers, etc..) ?
Thanks for your answers
Paul O'Brien @ MoDaCo has just tweeted that he has rooted his own Samsung Galaxy S, so im sure that he will produce some great things for this phone as he has done with many other android phones. I hope its soon
I'm pretty sure there will be some awesome custom ROM s. This phone will be on the top 4 US carriers and US cellular. There will be a lot of new developers coming to this forum once the device is released.

I consider this more of an annoyance since there will be like 5 different rom types (4 US versions plus the Europe/Global version) because so far every version has a different hardware configuration. AT&T and T-Mobile versions have different buttons (4 instead of 3) and no front camera. The Sprint version is a totally different phone with camera flash, a keyboard, and unfortunately, only 1 GB of storage (Link). The Sprint version also has no front camera and comes with 4 buttons. No details on the Verizon version. It's inevitable that someone will flash with the wrong rom.
The Captivate for AT&T has almost identical hardware to the I9000, as well as having a front facing camera. the only thing that was rly changed on this phone from the I9000 was the body design and the extra button.

Hmm...i actually read that it won't have the front facing camera.

Captivate will have front facing camera and Vibrant on t-mobile does not have it. Vibrant actually looks identical to the Galaxy S, but Catptivate looks totally different(i think it looks better). Captivate looks=SE X10 looks, Galaxy S/Vibrant looks=iPhone looks??
edit. both of those links are telling that they both have secondary camera, but pictures of the phones are without front cameras.
here's the Samsung Captivate and Samsung Galaxy S I9000 compared on gsmarena

Remember Samsung holds a tight lock around it's drivers. So don't expect anything to awesome with these roms. No wifi tether is obvious and all roms will be based on Samsungs current 2.1 release. It's impossible to port anything from HTC or Motorola onto a Samsung phone because of the crazy partitions and security they have on it.
Yeah that was the problem I was referring to when creating custom firmware..
I'll buy another phone I guess
I'm not an expert, but don't think that's true. As SGS is rooted and Paul is currently preparing the kitchen @Modaco it looks like the bootloader is not locked like motorola milestone. Thus there's no problem to have custom roms, or?. Froyo is secured (according to samsung) so drivers will not be a problem in near future imho.
P.S. as I see some other phones with the same/similar hardware are announced to come in the next several months so pretty much there will be drivers available..from one or another place. But this is valid concern for any android as a matter of fact...except nexus 1, which is out of my scope due to the bad HW
P.S.S Another .02c - if the functionality promised is working as charm and the remaining phone's issues are solved in the near future...is it so important to have the latest gimmick that re-starts the troubleshooting from scratch?
P.S.S.S Samsung is a better choice than HTC... Many reasons.

Samsung's drivers are proprietary and encrypted. You still have to wait for them to be released in order to get anything to work on a Samsung device or else the device will have no display/sound/antenna's. The bootloader was hacked on the Behold 2 but we still had no option to flash from the phone. That means ODIN is the only way. Behold 2 was rooted and still had no wifi-tether and no choice in custom roms (it was whatever samsung released + optimizations). HTC has Samsung beat with hackability.
Ok, I understand now what you mean. Didn't know that.
Too bad with this encyption story...
edit:we wouldn't have gingerbread if samsung won't release it,is that right? No chance to get something "new" if samsung doesn't release it directly?

If they release it for another Samsung phone then it's possible that it could be ported but not certain. There is a 2.1 rom for the Galaxy. Eugene tried to port it to the Behold 2 and got almost everything working except for the most important thing which is sound. Wifi/BT/data/video were all there but he just couldn't get sound. We had a 1.6 rom well before the official release only because Galaxy had it first (also someone got a secret behold 2 beta a month after the Galaxy rom was released) and it's only problem was it didn't have vibrate. It's just nearly impossible to do anything without something from Samsung.
A good read if you want to understand what you're getting into when you buy a Samsung phone. http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-behold-2/63246-dev-needed-2-1-running-behold-2-a-4.html
mmmm, so, the combination of encrypted drivers and poor samsung support i.e. firmware updates, means that we wont be able to run 2.2 ROMs unless samsung releases 2.2?
and also further android versions are a no go?
already been burned by motorola with milestone and its locked bootloader, dont wanna burn again.... seems like the only option is HTC

But there is wifi tethering. I set up a mobile AP on my UK Vodafone SGS to allow a guy in the office to activate his iPhone 4!

Are you sure about that? Recording to this thread the galaxy s source samsung released includes drivers with wlan and camera mentioned as examples:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696863
o shi. if what you guys says here is true and there is no way to make new roms for the samsung or get new android version until samsung make them because of the DRIVERS that's a no go Galaxy for me plus tether is a Must Have for me .... damm u samsung. that was the only phone in t-mobile that I like I guess I'm gonna have to switch from carrier after all
I think we can't really compare GS with Behold 2. GS will have lot more support from Samsung. Also i have faith in Paul's work, he will come with some serious ROM's.
I wouldn't surprise if he would port Froyo to GS before Samsung. He already had fixed stalling issue, now i could feel real hummingbird humming in my GS.

[Q] S4 Rom port to S3?

Since the S4 already has a rom leak, just wondering if the S4 rom is even compatible with theh S3 given the different processor, camera and so on. I have given up on ATT releasing anything further for the S3.

Its likely we will see something eventually, just not the same day as the leak drops. Be patient
Most definately not comptabile out of the box, but an eventual port is more than likely just a matter of time.
As for updates to the S3 from Samsung/AT&T/Bell/Telus/Rogers, I'd expect at least a 4.2.x TW ROM and less likely but still possible, a 5.x TW ROM as well.
It all depends on the required min specs of Android 5.x. But, since the advent of Android, RAM has always been the biggest caveat with respect to upgrade paths. With all the latest flagship phones still coming out with 2Gb or RAM, expect our phones to be able to easily run Android 5.x.
Unfortunately, it all comes down to Samsung and the carriers to decide if we're worthy of an upgrade.
Apparently S3 is getting 5.x
International variants only however.. there's posts all over the place with news links/sources..

dual booting customs roms with Galaxy S3 i747

hey i have been having some wifi problems with CM 10.1.2 Aka Android 4.2.2 Jelly BEAN. anywz i have decided to go back to STOCK CUSTOM TOUCHWIZ 4.1.2 and it has been smooth, stable no problems but i like CM on 4.2.2, since Samsung is realising 4.3 for Galaxy S3 next month and 4.4 is already here but 4.2.2 is the most stable and since Sammy will not give out 4.2.2 for Galaxy S3 i had to try with CYANOGENMOD, AOKP, PARANOID, CARBON ROMS to get the feel of 4.2.2 on my S3 which i will never for touchwiz (FU SAMMY, SO MAD THAT I WANNA GO AND PUNTCH SOME SAMSUNG OFFICIALS)
the point is, idont wanna lose TOUCHWIZ and latest stable 4.2.2 with CM so how i can dual boot this two roms, i have read and searched and the only thing that came up was for the old HTC phones like Desires HD, S, Z, EVOS, INCREDIBLES, INSPIRE, MYtouch, Nexus One, Sensation, Thunderbolt and HTC'S stuck on 2.3, or ice cream sandwich, the International Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 right here on XDA, the international Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100, I9100G, the SGS 2 EPIC 4G sprint variant if am correct and some Moto droids plus
wats the big difference or hype that the international can dual boot or can do better than the American Variants???????????????????
anyone finds how to dual boot on the Galaxy S3 I747 PLEASE REPLY ASAP, am sure there's some file, answer or something hidden on this XDA forums that can help me, its just too hard to dig up hundreds of pages just to find a software or programme or app that can do this
any suggestion, idea, solution or ANYTHING is allowed i just need to dual boot, i cant KEEP BACKING UP, RESTORING ROMS WHILE IT TAKES TOO MUCH TIME AND SPACE, MONEY, ITS TOO STRESSFUL, Sometimes it might or might not work cuz of a MD5 file mismatch which makes me wanna hate android more
so help anyway if you can, reply, we can solve it who knows
THIS IS SAMSUNG FAULT THAT AM STUCK ON 4.1.2 ON TOUCHWIZ cuz i cant upgrade and have to USE CM 10.1.2 TO USE 4.2.2 and guess what 4.3 is out and 4.4 will be out sooner than later so arghhhhhhhhhhh it makes wanna get an IPHONE 5 and use their IOS 7 which almost looks identical to gingerbread-ICS-windows PHONE FEEL and its apple its smooth like a baby butt and simple enough 50-60 year old gramma to use it
get yur $h!t TOGETHER Samsung the S3 is just a year old, update it or am done, NEXUS 5, S5, NOTE 3, ONE or even the LUMIA 1020 with the odd couple at the back 42 megs
sorry for the rant but i need to dual boot customs roms

Considering we're still only on 5.0.2 and 5.1.1 has been out for many months I'd feel there is little chance this year if ever. A custom ROM will be our best bet. Also be careful what you wish for as you still see many posts from people reverting to KitKat while Lollipop has been great for me.

Let first hope that we will get 5.1.1 first then think about android M
One day, when we've moved on to other devices, Samsung may release M for the Tab S
they might just be skipping 5.1.x and going directly to M...

no, pure speculation
but I just wonder the point of devoting energy into 5.1 when M is on the horizon.
who knows how it works though.
I dont think tab s can run android m properly
If we wont get the android M update from samsung maybe we will get a a port like cm13 who knows

M is supposed to be optimized and with several improvements in comparison to LP.
So if it can run LP than it will fly with M.
It's Samsung obligation to provide Android M, because of the 2 year firmware support. No excuses are accepted!
Being fed up with all my Samsung devices firmware sluggish and dated updates, I'm considering in the future moving to Nexus or Apple.
Samsung, please don't ask premium prices, and then provide the cheapest support.
I agree @pacc I think I will move on to one plus LG and nexus my next device wont be samsung
I read the other day that galaxy tab 4 is receiving android 5.1.1 around now , so I'm hoping the tab S will get it too...anything else doesn't make sense; both devices released around the same time, and tab S is the premium one...
As for M, that just wild speculation. My money is on "no, we won't get that"

IMHO, and I'm no expert just an end user, Android and Apple bite. Not ONE Android based device I have is capable of browsing the internet with the same functionality as Chrome, Firefox or IE. Facebook apps are lame at best and I prefer the interface we are given with a browser over any of the apps. I'm not going to buy any future Android based devices. I totally refuse to purchase anything from Apple after being stung buying an iPOD years ago.
So IF I ever buy another tablet, and that's pretty doubtful, it will be Windows based, cell phone too.
Samsung, Asus, Rockchip devices using Android....no more of my money....
Samsung suckered me in with a great price for awesome hardware but I am more educated now I would never buy a Samsung these days. I originally installed a custom ROM because I got tired of all the lag and bugs of Tab S stock kitkat. Expensive lesson as now my knox is tripped.. Samsung probably isn't excited to release software because everyone is wiping to get rid of lag then never reporting into their service. I lasted two months.. I would type a sentence then wait as it slowly came out, it was epic bad lag.
I lasted 2 days and tjen wiped and flashed a custom rom lol I guess thats the reason why they dont update

They may be using Tab 4 as a test before putting their eggs in the basket with the Tab S.
I must have lower expectations of my tab than you guy`s, I am still on kitkat and apart from rooting to get full microsd access i have had no problems at all, I don't care about updates they seem to cause more problems than they are worth.
John.
Great devices totally ruined by that crappy samsung software

How to stay on Android 9? Do not want to upgrade

Hi, I just started using a new Galaxy A50 from Sprint. I am generally OK with it. No plan to unlock bootloader and root yet, probably cannot anyways.
My most recent phone is a rooted Moto Z play on Android 6.0.1. It was THE battery king of its time. Those who upgraded to 7 or later saw battery deteriorated where those of us holdouts still enjoyed the long battery life, and making it overall less stressful.
Generally speaking it is my observation the the device is best with its original software out of factory. So I want to stay with Android 9 with Galaxy A50. So far I have done security updates and the next big one is UI2.0 with Android 10, and I am stopped here and pose a question to this community.
In Developers' options, I turned off "Auto update system". But I still see the upgrade notification in the full down menu.
Is there a permanent way to disable OS upgrade? I can use ADB to uninstall such packages if I know which ones are doing system upgrades? Again I am perfectly happy with the "out of factory software".
Comments are greatly appreciated.
