I've read the basic guide for the Kindle and I've recently obtained a factory cable for my Kindle Fire I (not II). The factory seems to be working and it gets the kindle in to fast boot. I have installed the drivers and I have ADB running but no device is detected. I'm honestly completely lost and would appreciate any help. Thanks!
If your factory cable is working then the KFU will work even if the device isn't detected. It did for me, and adb didn't find the device. Try typing "fastboot devices" instead of adb devices.

For me it does not. I'll pub it in and the Kindle Fire logo pops up for fastboot. Then I launch KFU and my computer detects a device too.
However when I try to do anything it will give me "<waiting for device". What exactly do you mean by type in fastboot devices.
Look up a tutorial for setting up adb and fastboot on your computer and you'll see what I mean

Have same problem described. KF 1, fastboot cable. Tried following threads on xda for unbricking but none of the instructions are presented in a way that covers every step required, Some download links are dead. Assumes prior knowledge of steps, sofftware used.
My goal is to unbrick and restore instead of throwing this thing out. Amazon will not support Kindle Fire 1 and threw me a discount offer on a new HD (after I had already bought one). Can somone help pick up where the previous post left off (assume he gave up)?
Thanks

You have the wrong forum. Try the KFHD dedicated forum. This is only for the regular kindle fire.

Hello friends, I have a little doubt over here.
I was trying to root my Kindle Fire v6.3.1 to install Google Play and that kind of things by using the Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.6. I chose the Permanent Root with Superuser option and after it rebooted by using Fastboot, it stuck on the boot screen (the one that says kindle fire, the fire on yellow/golden letters).
I had installed the ADB drivers succesfully, as it was recognized by Windows; but I didn't install the TWRP tool. I have tried some things I read on this forum:
1. I powered it off, then opened the KFU, and chose Normal Bootmode. Then I plugged the KF and it turned on automatically. However, my pc didn't recognize the Kindle so KFU keeps waiting the device.
2. I tried turning it off, then on and pressing the power button 3 seconds to activate the recovery menu. It didn't appear.
Also, I'd like to remark that it doesn't turn off immediately. I have to press the power button a few times to do it, but it doesn't follow a pattern.
Thanks, and I'm sorry if something similar already existed. I've searched a lot and I can't find a solution.
PS: As English is not my native tongue, I might have made some mistakes.
seems to be the issue lately with kfu all it does when you select permanet root is get you stuck in fastboot. Did the kfu terminal show anything being pushed to your kindle? Also its very likely that twrp or fff didnt get installed if you did not select those options. Now its just a matter of getting it out of fastboot some info here may help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705063
I'm sure I didn't install neither TWRP nor FFF. Regarding to KFU, all I can remember is that first it rebooted the Kindle in Fastboot Mode, then it downloaded some files I didn't have and then kept waiting for the device.
Now, when I connect the Kindle turned on, it appears as unknown device. When I try to update the drivers using ADB, still names it as 'unknown device'.
Thanks.
Adb won't see it in fastboot try some things in the link I posted there are other approaches here:

Ok im posting in hopes to help someone else and myself.
DEVICE: 1st Gen Kindle Fire (D01400)
PROBLEM: Kindle quickly flashes stock logo then displays red screen.
I created this problem by using the wrong root tool (Qemuroot) [This tool is made for a Kindle Fire HD]
I bought a fastboot cable i hopes to use KFU/KUU to unbrick the device.
However Windows 8 only shows the device driver listed as Otter2-Prod-04 (Unknown Device) I proceeded to install the ADB drivers, even manualy assigned the device driver, and disabled driving signing and reinstalled drivers. (Drivers appear to install correctly however won't show up in connected adb devices.)
At this point im going to use SoupKit. I will post the outcome.
If you have had a similar problem or know of a fix which I have yet to research please let me know.
Thanks
Tested with Ubuntu linux using soupkit & firekit.
Both resulted in <Waiting for Android device> same in windows as well.
So I tried another computer also running windows 8, installed fresh SDK/Java/Drivers.
Once again had to force the driver to replace the unknown device "Otter2-Prod-04" now the device says its working in device manager yet nothing in ADB or fastboot.
I will add when I plug the device in using the fastboot cable it shows a red fastboot text and a stoplight green is flashing.
At this point im stuck and have reached the end of google. Yup thats right the very last page.
More hours put into this. I can issue fastboot commands. So this now turns into a question.
Is it possible to restore my kindle using fastboot?

You should be able to if you can push fff and recovery over and flash them via fastboot
Should enable you to have recovery back and work from there

Well I killed my kindle.
Pushed the FFF via fast boot and now the device no longer powers on, no lights, no sign of life.

Hello all
I realize the one post below me is almost the exact same problem, but I am stuck. I just got my kindle hd 89 and I already have a red screen. Every option I try to use to get fastboot does not work, whether I'm using cmd and typing in the command, using KFFA, or KFHD 2.1. I think I ended up with a red screen by using FireFlash but without checking the right options. If it matters, I started with 8.4.6. I really want to unred-screen this, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
hi beatmastermcfly,
I guess this will be a driver problem, for me win 7 64bit it works perfectly.
Have you ever tried KFHD_SRTv1.3-8.1.2 to start on another PC? Did you run it as an Admin?
You get a red screen when you try to SRT to enter fastboot?

I used KFHD_SRTv2.1- 8.1.4 and I am going to try KFHD_SRTv2.0- 8.1.3 , but the link to KFHD_SRTv1.3-8.1.2 in this thread appears to be dead. Anyone have a mirror?
And yes, the issue I'm having with KFFA, the SRT, and even when I am just trying to boot into fastboot via cmd, is that it says "waiting for device" and then when I plug it in it says "KindleFire" (in orange) for a second or two before switching over to the red screen.
I was able to do fastboot before the red screen showed up, so I doubt it has anything to do with drivers.
hi beatmastermcfly,
I asked because I recently in a German Help - Forum have 3 different PC's tried it with a user (always bare OS with identical increments). Only after 1 week it has then eventually folded.
the Pc's have not accepted the Fastboot.exe for any reason.

I do not understand what you are saying.
I will say that when I plug the Kindle in, my laptop makes the "device connected" noise followed quickly by the "device disconnected" noise and it even shows up in the device manager for the split second before it turns red.
What exactly is the device that shows up in the device manager call itself before it disappears? And does it have a yellow triangle on it?

At first it showed up under "portable devices" as an "unknown device" and I managed to uninstall the drivers in the hopes of re-installing them, and then the next time it showed up under "portable devices" as "jem-004..." etc. or whatever the code name for this type of kindle is. I think it just shows up as the category "other devices" now, but I do not have the kindle handy.
Depending on if it manages to stay connected long enough you might be able to install the drivers in my SIG, but I think windows cancels the driver install if it disconnects in mid install. If that's the case and running "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" and then plugging the kindle in doesn't go into fastboot you may need to boot a ubuntu live CD and do this from a terminal since the drivers work differently on Linux, they load up immediately without you having g to install anything.

Dead Kindle Fire HD 8.9
Okay, due to my own errors while using fastboot on my KF, it no longer does *anything* when I try to turn it on. I can't reenter fastboot, since ADB no longer recognizes the device (which of course, it can't, since the device doesn't start). I mean, it does *nothing* (although the hardware is in great shape).
Am I, as I suspect, just dead in the water here? I have the recovery files, but without ADB or fastboot, I no longer have a way to load them.
Should I just start using the KF as a doorstop now? Or is there some obscure solution to this mess?
rogerlig
Someone correct me but figuring concludes that the red screen is because amazon blocks tablet when it comes to a stolen board or losses , my I get a tablet I did not say much , so that the repaired but through the serial number of a personal contact amazon and they said it was lost and I imagine blocked the operating system so I could not use the tablet
Please Help!

On a win7 x64 box you need adb (there is a quick version) installed. The kfhd drivers. USC disabled. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU MUST RUN ADB FROM A COMMAND PROMPT ORIGINATED FROM THE ADB FOLDER. (shift+right click and select "run command prompt from here)
Did you ever get your kfhd 8.9" to work. Everything youve said so far is the exact replica of my kindle. I know its like 7 years later but this is still a problem for people

this is a COPY/PASTE of my own post. the files i specify are the exact names, just search this section of X-DA for them. SEE BELOW.
i had the same problem with the "red screen of death" as well. i found that if i installed the "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" and / OR (i did the minimal first.... ) KFHD_SRTv1.3.5 and RUN THE APP FIRST, then when it says "waiting for device" you then plug in the ALREADY OFF tablet it then WORKS!! says "fastboot mode" on the tablet. and it is listed in device manager also.
i got BOTH apps here at this board in this section.
WARNING: i run windows XP with all updates as of 10-31-2017 (pm me for info, 2 lines of text!! ) . NEWER windows versions have "permission issues". fixes are posted in multiple topics here in the Amazon 7" Kindle Fire HD, 8.9" Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire 2 section. READ THEM!!

So you flashed OtterX bootloader? What else did you do? Convert to OtterX partitions? OtterX twrp?
Okay im new to this thread and am (sort of a noob dev). I have the same issue what i did was.
1. download saferoot(installed that worked perfect.
2.went into adb following your guide for twrp and fff while in adb. instead of a (-i) i thought it said (-1) so i put that after 0x1949 i think anyway.
3. noticed what i did then changed it waited a little bit and it just kept saying waiting for device. Then i closed adb and shut it off. rebooted it and opened adb nothing.
It isn't being recognized by windows and it is making the usb connection error sound when plugged in. all that adb says is no device connected. however in my windows devices menu it says other device\kindle? as in a malfunctioned device. i need to try and fix this and i wanted cm11. but if i need to go back to stock i will. Thanks.

Did you ever get this resolved? I am currently stuck in the fastboot mode, although it doesn't say fastboot on my screen, just the non-animated "kindle fire" boot screen. I have been browsing for a while now and no solution, so hopefully if you found a fix then it is related!
I got rooted, ran some fbmode thing to get to fastboot to install a custom recovery and now I'm stuck here without being able to actually access fastboot. Shows up as "other devices/kindle" with a yellow triangle. Both "adb devices" and "fastboot devices" returns no results. I am now on Ubuntu hoping that the drivers would be as automagic as every other Android device, but still no fastboot/adb devices results.
I'll probably post a new thread by the way, but really hoped you had found a way past this already!
Thanks

Actually I followed the guide at Cyanogenmod, but was unable to fastboot so I followed their instructions to manually fastboot and after successfully entering fastboot from running their "./fbmode" script and rebooting, I'm now stuck without being able to contact the device. Nothing shows up under "fastboot devices." I guess I tried on Ubuntu and Windows 8, not Windows 7. I will try installing the Kindle drivers under Windows 7 when I get home later this evening. Thanks.

A couple of months back I tried to flash something (If I recall correctly, I flashed an otter mod on twrp) and failed miserably. System was not able to be mounted anymore, kindle fire was not readable by adb, it had no operating system. Fast forward a couple of months I am stuck with FireFireFire menu (v1.4a) and there is no recovery either, just normal boot which boot loops the amazon kindle logo.
I do not have a fastboot nor factory cable.
Complete noob.
1st generation Kindle Fire.
P.S : When I try flashing twrp with KFU it says it succeeds but once I try a recovery menu it does not boot into recovery menu, just the firefirefire menu and from there the only working option is to normal boot into the kindle fire bootloop.
Help? Please?

Ok through some trial and error I managed to install twrp on it using firekit on ubuntu, so now I at least have that. However, I cannot seem to be able to mount sd card. Tried soupkit to fix it, says it is fixed and I am given the same mounting error in twrp terminal. When I try to mount anything else other than that, the pc just does not see it. Driver issue? I remember installing the drivers just fine, what should I do next? Change its driver somehow?
P.S : In device manager it seems to be listed as "Android ADB Interface". Is that correct?

Mentioned previously it shows up as Android ADB Device. When I change the driver to usb composite it does show up as kindle and shows up as USB Drive F. I can store stuff on there, but there are no partitions and when I look for the files on TWRP they do not show up anywhere.

First the only thing KFU is good for is installing the drivers.
You likely need a fastboot cable
$10 on Amazon or eBay

Is it possible for you to link a fastboot cable that would work from Amazon?

Not many options anymore but this should work.
Factory Fastboot Cable by N2A (R) - Fix/Repair Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HDX, Motorola Xoom & Phones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0099E59SG/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_0.JbGbVDERHAA
Well gang it was a good run but I think mine is dead. It will only turn on for a split second when holding the power button and show the otterx bootlogo then shuts off completely (can't even select the recovery menu option) and this will repeat every time I try until it occasionally will go into the battery charging screen when holding the power button to turn it on (while the device is not charging, but then it shuts off after a second or 2 on that screen). I have tried a factory cable (the one @sd_shadow recommended above - which unfortunately seemed to not work). I also tried the pin short usbboot method which didn't work either. The battery does appear to be charging though, as it went from 75% to 83% after a bit of charging.
The odd thing is that I cannot get the power light to turn on when I have usb plugged into it (it only turns on without USB connected). So any of those occurrences above only happen when USB is not connected. I am not sure why this is, but I am very confused at this point.
If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it, but I am assuming it's a lost cause at this point... not sure what else I can try beyond an entire motherboard swap
I am going to post a video of the shutting off so you guys can see what I am talking about, maybe that might help idk
EDIT: it's now at 86% so I am gonna see if I can charge it fully then try again
My thoughts are that either the battery is acting up, or the charging/USB port is, it has to be one or the other if I cannot get it into usbboot, but I am going to keep trying I guess. Will post those videos I said I would above soon
