I am thinking of rooting my daughter's fire. Before I do I would like to backup all of her app data. Is there a way to do this so I can restore all her saved games once I am finished rooting it?
Truthfully rooting is obsolete you can send twrp and fff to the kindle. Access recovery, create a backup, flash modaco straight over the stock image without wiping and its rooted with Google play and all her data still intact... Exactly what I did with my daughters..

Can I get twrp and fff from the Amazon App store?
No, but there's a small tool for installing it, check out this thread for installation guides, it's pretty simple: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
After I use the tool will I be able to install custom ROMs? I would like to install either ICS or JB on her Fire.
Indirectly yes. You can use that tool to install TWRP. You can then use TWRP to backup your current system and install custom roms.
Before you get in over your head...
You seem like a pretty resonable person, so don't be naive to the complications that normally arise with those that attempt to "root/modify" their devices with the above mentioned utility. You are much better off doing a little research and trying to educate yourself in how this whole process works.
Find out what FFF is, what it does and how to use it. Find out what TWRP is, how it works and how to use it. Most of this stuff is easy to do and understand, but not if you don't know anything about it. Take a look around the forums and you'll see the large number of people who used the Kindle Fire Utility and ran into trouble with no idea of why or how to fix it. It would be beneficial and a lot less stressful for you if you had an idea of exactly what you were getting into.
At the top of this page is a sticky, titled "Before asking for troubleshooting help...". There are links in that thread, to many useful guides with a wealth of information to give you a great head start to keeping everything running smoothly. And don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand, just don't be ridiculous about it, because in the end, there is still no better education than experience.
I did find this thread. Is the tool basically an automated version of this?

I am a little informed on the rooting process as I have rooted my HTC Thunderbolt. I will do a little more research before I do anything to the fire. I don't want to mess up my daughters device and have her upset with me. Are there any good JB ROMs out there for daily driver use or are the only stables one out ICS?

The Kindle Fire is very solid so it's extremely unlikely you will do anything to permanently "brick" it. Just be sure you are extremely careful installing a custom bootloader. The latest one can be flashed in recovery very safely, so I would skip that option if you decide to use the KFU. All it would take is a slight power surge, blue screen of death or accidentally pulling the USB cable out at the wrong time, and you'll be doing THIS to fix it. Believe me, it's not fun the first time around.
As for a good daily driver...most JB and ICS ROMs are rather stable, with minor quirks here and there, but they are still better than the stock OS any day IMO.
Will I lose all the saved app data during the initial rooting process? If so, is there a way to backup this information so that I will not lose her saved games?
you dont have to root you didn``t read my post very well you only need fff and twrp if you flash modaco you will be rooted and all your daughters data will be intact but this is only the case with modaco. most people who use kfu and select install permanent root with kfu have some type of failure as of recent. failing to push su binaries, failing to push superuser apk failing drivers that cant handle the quick change of fastboot, getting stuck in fastboot and the list goes on and on...

No. "Rooting" really only consists of adding two files. One that gives you actual root access (ownership) and one that keeps track of App permissions set by you.
The tricky thing is that you need temporary root access to get those files in place. This is where custom recovery comes in. Custom recoveries, like TWRP, come standard with root access, which will allow you to install and configure those two files. Custom recoveries go on their own partitions to replace their current, less effective stock counterparts, so no data capacity is lost in the process. With only those pieces of software in place, you would need to use the command line any time you want to access recovery, this is where a custom bootloader comes in. A custom bootloader will allow you to hold the power button at startup to access recovery on the fly.
The actual rooting process is unnecessary, especially if you intend to flash a custom ROM, because all custom ROMs these days are already pre-rooted. So, all you really have to do to get where you want, is get access to fastboot mode to flash a custom recovery (TWRP), push the desired ROM to your sdcard, wipe System & Factory Reset, install and reboot. The hardest part is getting the adb to work.

You can make backups of everything in recovery and transfer it all to your computer.

Neither.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25730650
Read through it to get a good understanding before attempting anything.
the actual act of putting twrp and fff is actually fairly straight forward the difficult thing is getting your drivers installed correctly. Rather than going first shot trying to either fastboot flash twrp and fff via command line or via kfu it is best to test your drivers to get a good idea of how they will act and if they will perform correctly. Instead of leaving your computer unable to detect the kindle in an undesirable state...
The kindle needs to enter fastboot to get at least part of the job and unfortunately with windows this sudden driver change tends to confuse it...
Side note: you go outside of modaco which you dont have to wipe when flashing to ICS or JB there will be data loss because a full wipe of everything but your sdcard contents will have to be wiped..
Well I finally pulled the trigger last night and unlocked my daughters fire. I ended up using kfu to install fff and twrp. Then flashed monaco ROM and all is well. Thanks everyone for their help in getting this done.:good:
Congrats! The modified fire is so much better than the stock.

I know I can get my device back, I'm just not sure how. I successfully rooted using CASUAL, no problems there. Got the normal root applications installed, did the Clockwork backup, everything was great.
I then decided to try a custom ROM - the Cyanogen 10.1. It downloaded fine, and I selected to also install Google Apps, then it rebooted and the Cyanogen boot screen with the spinning circle came up. However, this lasted way longer than I thought it should, so I looked it up, and what I got from the research is that I had the wrong gapps on there.
So, I followed the instructions in this thread (same problem as me), and wiped the system. However, I believe I used the wrong list item, and now everything I had is gone. I can't boot from recovery because it doesn't exist, and when booting into CM I just get the same error message that setup has stopped working. I thought maybe I could put a new ROM on the sd card or phone harddrive and boot from that, but both are inaccessible through USB on my Mac.
I can get it into ODIN mode (where it says "Downloading... Do not turn off target!"), which I'm thinking is what I want, and I have Heimdall installed and it runs and recognizes my device, but I cannot for the life of me find a tar.gz file to use.
If anyone can offer any sort of help, I would super appreciate it.

Your recovery shouldn't be affected by a wipe (unless you flashed something over it) as ROMs don't flash recovery, therefor vol up + home + power should get you in it. If you success to, You should be able to mount through recovery.
As for Heimdall, it just got S3 support (last week I believe), therefor it might not be easy to find a stock file for it. That being said, if you have access to any Windows pc, that'd be the easiest solution here (using Odin).
Yes, I can still get into the recovery menu, but when I use "backup and restore>restore" it says No files found. Is there anything I can do to just get a working OS running? Or am I just doing it totally wrong, I'm new to the rooting stuff. The Windows computer will be my last resort haha.

Windows pc is definitely the easiest option here but you try mounting your SD from recovery, redownload the ROM and Gapps you wanna use, put them on your device and flash them after a factory reset.
If you wiped your SD card, it's normal that you don't have a backup anymore.

It's aaaliiiiiiive! Grabbed an extra micro SD I had, threw Cyanogen 10.1.0 RC4 on it, and installed it just fine. Now updating to RC5. My only question now is how to get Google Apps on there. Does this need to be done beforehand, or can it be done after?

You usually flash the Gapps right after flashing the ROM, before rebooting.
P.S.: fully reading the instructions helps before flashing

also one thing you need to know
First boot after you flash will always take longer than normal. After that, it's fine
So I used to be able to access Service Mode via *#197328640# but I haven't used it in like a year. I tried to fiddle with it today and the code no longer works. I'm guessing I never used it since I updated from 4.1.x to 4.3. Still running a stock ROM.
Is there an easy way to bring it back without rooting or flashing (unless there's a simple one click root out there)? I read a bunch of threads for other devices and tried a few things but nothing worked.
I read somewhere I needed a hidden menu apk which I did not have so I downloaded one and installed it but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it do anything.
And yes, I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to messing with Android devices.
Thanks.
Hi everyone,
I have some advanced questions so I'm reaching out to the geeky people out there for help.
Just a bit of backgroud, I have the OPPO find 7 and so far I managed to root it using guides online and to add Cyanogenmod on it and I'm comfortable so far installing CM 11 nightly build updates and doing things like backup/restore.
Recently during an update the phone was bricked and I managed to unbrick it myself following some guides online. After I unbricked it, I noticed that it was running Lollipop and that few things had changed. After I installed CM 11 I have been having problems so here's my questions:
a) I noticed the Logo during startup has changed and also the "fastboot" icon is different too. This seems to have nothing to do with the OS. Did I somehow manage to change the Kernel? Could all the problems I am having be caused by the change of Kernel?
b) How do we update the Kernel? Can I put it back to how it was when everything with was working?
c) If the startup logo and the fastboot is not related tot he Kernel, then what is it that I have accidentally changed?
d) A lot of people in forums make recommendations such as to "install COS model version blah", or use Nameless Rom version blah, or to do a full wipe first and then blah. I am extremely confused about all of these recommendations because I have hundreds of apps that are very specifically configured and if I have to do a full wipe it'll take me weeks to bring the phone to a state where it's useful to me.
Do all these people have a way of backing up all their apps and data? It sounds like a cosmic joke that I wasn't let it on.
I know how to do an image backup/restore but that changed the OS too. I am using TWRP, can that do a different type of backup that only backs up all the data/apps/cache but leaves OS independent?

I will attempt to answer your questions. Forgive me if I didn't answer everything to your satisfaction.
A) How is your fastboot icon different? Any elaboration? Startup animation should (by right) be different every time you flash a custom ROM. For example, if you flash CM, you'll have the CM boot animation and not the Oppo boot animation. This issue shouldn't be caused by a change in kernel. Your boot animation is stored in system/media/bootanimation.zip. Not sure about fastboot though.
B) Kernels are updated when you flash a ROM. You will get the CM kernel when you flash a CM ROM, etc. If you want the stock kernel back, you'll need to flash COS (1.2.5i recommended)
C) Look at A), again, not sure about fastboot, need a pic or explanation.
D) Normally for me, when I run into a major issue, I simply download the ROM+GApps, boot into recovery, wipe system, cache and Dalvik cache then flash the ROM before GApps. This should solve most issues. If you run into radio/GPS issues, you'll have to back up your apps via TB or Helium, then copy your whole internal storage onto a computer (for backup purposes), then flash COS. Boot into COS, run a few apps, then flash your custom ROM. (Custom recovery first of course.)
P.S. how did you unbrick your device? I don't know any tool that flashes Lollipop when unbricking.
---------- Post added at 08:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:21 PM ----------
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
This is still quite confusing then, because I still don't understand why the logo and the fastbook icon changed and also I don't understand why the phone loaded Lollipop. Before the logo was a gray "OPPO" but now it's a white one, with different font and it says Android at the bottom. The fastboot icon used to be a green android robot with a blue text saying "fastboot" if I remember correctly but now it shows chinese text with the OPPO emoticon.
I downloaded CM 11 latest nightly (which bricked my phone) and then I followed your guide to unbrick it. But instead of flashing COS as you recommended, I followed this recommendation here and used a unbrick_cm.zip which should, in theory, load CM 11, but instead it booted to Lollipop:
A problem was identified in the find7 nightlies for the 14th and they were pulled; unfortunately you and possibly a few others already installed it. The problem has been identified and a fix has been found:
http://www.oppoforums.com/threads/gu...nd-7-7a.23067/ provides a tool and instructions on how to return a bricked find7 to stock. The linked download includes the entire stock ColorOS rom, which isn't needed to fix this problem(and is over 1gb in download size!); an edited version can be found at https://mega.co.nz/#!SQNh2ShY!UlHUE8...fTuaP_CPYr9yfQ will fix the specific issue caused by this nightly without replacing the OS or wiping your data.
Use the unbrick_cm.zip with the instructions in the oppoforums post (I also had this problem but it wouldn't work on win7 but did on xp, so there may be some compatibility issues) and you should be good to go.

I am still quite confused about what happened to be honest. After the phone was unbricked I used an earlier image I had from a backup and restored the phone to that point, so If the kernel and OS are in the image then the logo and the fastboot menu should go back to exactly as they were before, but they didn't!

You should have used the tool I linked in my thread. It's by Addel (Oppo employee if I'm not wrong) so nothing should go wrong. I never heard if the unbrick_cm.zip before so... Yea, not recommended. You should use the tool I linked to install COS 1.2.5i then mess around with it. Nothing should go wrong.
P.S. never use third party tools for unbricking unless dev is recognised or well-known.
Using TWRP you can restore apps/data/cache independently from system - just check/uncheck the boxes.

I flashed Nightly on my 7a, restored app+data (TWRP) without a problem. But I had issues with the 'screen of death' on CM every time the phone was put in sleep mode, so I went back to stable color 1.2.7 and restored everything with TWRP. So my experience of it is OK.
You could always use Titanium to restore apps/data if you don't want to risk bricking again, although I can't see how restoring non-system apps/data can brick your phone.
I felt compelled to register here and post my success on getting LineageOS installed on my Verizon VK810 4G Altev LG G Pad tablet. It would not have been possible without this forum and the users who contribute, both with information and with uploads. I initially tried rooting with KingRoot and the OTA updated OS I had from Verizon but the app said there were 63 requests for rooting my device. Forget that idea. After also trying iRoot which wasn't working, I used the LG Flash Tool to downgrade to VK81035A and then was successfully able to root that. SuperSu definitely helped with the process. My guess is, even though both were Android 5.0.2, mine had OTA patches that I guess caused issues for rooting. Installing TWRP was a hassle though. None of the v500 TWRP images worked for me and many of the custom TWRP versions that I found on here did not work for me. You would not imagine the number of times I thought I bricked my device because I kept getting "Secure Booting Error! Cause: boot certification verify" errors. However, what did work for me was, using Platform-tools and VK810_twrp_2.7.0.1.zip for TWRP. For some reason, the other versions posted here did not work for me. It did take me a while to figure out how to get into TWRP because I kept using the Power-VolUp key combinations and it kept bringing me to what looked like LG's recovery menu. I didn't realize that the screen is actually fake and you have to click "Factory Reset/Wipe" on there to get into TWRP. It actually took me a long time to figure that out. With TWRP installed, I searched for ROMs that I could use that were newer than Android 5.0.2 and ended up downloading LineageOS as it came up for the VK810 and since VS500 ROMs weren't allowed to be installed. Now to be fair, the LineageOS Rom that I used (lineage-14.1-20171228_233442-UNOFFICIAL-vk810.zip) is pretty glitchy. The display likes to blink a lot, many apps crash on it and there is no cellular data working for me, but I assume that will possibly be fixed in the future and at least now, I can customize more than I could on stock. On first install, I also lost my root and forgot to install the GApps package from the Lineage website. Anyway, hope this helps at least one person here. Nothing was one-click for me, but I did learn a lot about the process of rooting and flashing, and now better than to automatically allow OTA updates. I do hope LineageOS or another ROM keeps updating for the VK810 because this tablet does not seem that popular and I would like to see Oreo. Thank you everyone for your help!

Can you link where you got the ROM? Is anyone actively working on it? Really too bad the vk810 never got much love, great little device. Been awhile since I've done anything with it, it's my dad's so I got it rooted on 5.0.2 and just kinda left it alone. What prompted me to come back to this forum is screen mirroring won't work. The tablet sees TV and vice versa, it tries to connect but never completes the connection, just kicks back to satellite TV after a couple of seconds of black screen. Don't suppose you tried casting on that lineage build?

I got the ROM from the Invisiblek ROMS site under /roms/lineage-14.1/vk810/ (Can't post the link as I'm currently under 10 posts)
It's definitely a start. There is screen glitching, and no LTE service (Wi-Fi only), so it definitely limits the tablet. I have not done much with it as it was a hassle just to get the root within the OS to work correctly. Some apps aren't detecting root when the OS is trying to give it to them.

It'll have to wait until/if LTE is ever functional then, my parents don't have internet other 4g out in the sticks lol. Google took me right to it, thanks. Will keep it bookmarked just in case
I'd like to write about my experience too as it took me some time to finally get the device up and running.
I will describe what I wanted to do, what mistakes I've made and what should've been the correct way.
The device itself is LG G Pad 8.3, Verizon LTE variant aka vk810
Initally I received it in a bricked state, on launching it showed the "Secure booting error" message and that's it.
1) Unbricking
The goal was to install an official LG system image and restore the tablet to a working state.
Basically, I did everything according to the steps outlined here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/general/vk810-4g-reliable-to-root-install-t3283027
Installed LG drivers
Downloaded the LG Flash Tool 2104
Downloaded a KDZ image
Plugged the device in the download mode into the PC and installed the KDZ using the flash tool
At that point I got a fancy idea to install a non-stock Android on this tablet.
2) Lineage OS
I chose this OS for my tablet, because it seems to be the current standard for non-stock Android installations.
I followed these installation instructions: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/v500/install
BEWARE: that page is for v500, so it won't work for vk810.
Lineage doesn't support vk810 officially. A mistake I've made was assuming that I can just roll along with a v500 installation. Actually, you kinda can, but for me it resulted in Wi-Fi not working and my device's MAC address being 02:00:00:00:00:00.
3) Rooting
I was quite confused here too: there are different rooting methods, and some of them can be applied in different ways.
Ultimately I found Stump to be the most comfortable for me: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg...root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906
It works fine on this device and uses a very straightforward process: download APK to your PC, connect the tablet to the PC, "adb install <filename>.apk", then launch the app and that's it. It had to go through the bruteforce process to root, which took several minutes.
4) TWRP
I don't remember what exact TWRP I installed initially, but it was a 3.x version, and I encountered an issue where it couldn't mount any of the tablet's partitions. That was quite a pain in the ass.
For a while I resorted to using an older version, 2.7.x, and it worked fine.
Ultimately what I'm the most happy with is this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/general/vk810-twrp-3-1-1-0-unofficial-t3691551
The lesson learned here is that, again, you need to make sure stuff you install is compatible with your device.
Ultimately, after making mistakes at each step of the process, I figured out everything, and just followed the installation instructions on the Lineage page I linked earlier.
* Flash stock rom
* Root using Stump
* Enable USB debugging on the tablet, install Stump via adb and root the device
* Install vk810 variant of TWRP 3.2.1-0 via adb
* Reboot to recovery (turn off the tablet -> hold Volume Down + Power -> you should get a factory reset menu after the LG logo -> select factory reset, then confirm it and you'll be booted into TWRP. That factory reset is fake after you have TWRP installed)
* Wipe everything
* adb push the lineage / lineage's su / opengapps onto the device
* Install lineage, then su and opengapps and you're good to go
Main lesson learned: it is CRUCIAL to make sure stuff you install is compatible with your particular device. Do not assume that you can use another version, even if it is made for a device of the same family.
Just to provide an update here, this is where the ROM that I used came from: https://updater.invisiblek.org/vk810
The latest version at this time seems to be this: lineage-17.1-20200329-UNOFFICIAL-vk810.zip

Thanks for all the great information, but I have the VK810 that has usb connection problems. It will connect, but it keeps dropping (it cannot be trusted with usb cord). I have wanted to root, twrp, magisk and other things just to play around to see what it can do or how far I can go with it. I am not afraid to trash it. Have you or anyone else had this problem? I have reset it, wiped it out, factory settings, but nothing seems to help that usb port. I was thinking that reflashing the rom might help. Any advice is appreciated.
