So I was on PA 4.0 Beta from 12/25/2013, and I just tried to flash the update that was released today, Beta 3, and after flashing it, I can decrypt the device, but after it decrypts, I get a black screen and nothing else. I absolutely need help with this. Am I missing something?
i dont use device encryption, but arent you supposed to decrypt it before installing anything? then encrypt it again after installation and setup?

I mean, after flashing it with recovery, I restarted and it had me put in the encryption key. I did that then the black screen appeared.

No. Doesn't seem like encryption does any good if you can just boot to recovery and modify system files. Not familiar with the encryption process and flashing

Can someone tell me how to factory reset my Nexus 7?
It is rooted, with TWRP. I want to completely wipe it, as if I got it new from the shop. Whether root stays or not I don't mind.

Just flash the factory image. Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701. Just follow Method 1 from the OP in that thread. It's for the Nexus 5, but it's the same procedure for the Nexus 7. Obviously, replace the N5 files in those steps with the N7 factory image files. Oh, and ignore the tamper flag reset step, as there is no tamper flag on this device.
Thanks, does it matter what version of android I flash?

Did you do the flash-all method? Or did you flash each image file manually?

I probably wouldn't do system. But everything else should be fine. Did you get an error message when flash-all.bat ran? If there's still extra stuff on your sdcard partition, then it didn't run properly, if at all. Running flash-all.bat includes formatting and flashing userdata, which will wipe the sdcard, and leave it the way it came from the factory.
Sorted, thanks a lot!

Hey dudes,
Is there a possibility to root a Nexus 5X with Dev Preview 5 easily? I wouldn't experiment much on my Nexus 5X and want to have a quite easy way to root the Device.
Thanks!

If your drive is encrypted you cannot root without losing all your data. You will have to save your data and files for restoration after rooting.

Wrong. See the post above yours.
Also flashing an old vendor image makes TWRP work even if the phone is encrypted. So one could flash TWRP, an old vendor image, SuperSU, then the correct vendor image.

No, it does not. But you should back up your data anyway.
Edit: are you encrypted? It may wipe your data. You may want to do the other method I described.

It does work, but Android pay will not if you use it. Atleast that was my experience.
For sh!ts and giggles I unrooted (by flashing dp5 with the -w flag removed) then rerooted with CF-Autoroot and it didnt wipe /data. Just thought Id post this for anyone else that may have the same question.

Some yes. Download the kernel zip you want to install and unzip it. If it contains the boot.img then flash that with fastboot.
Though now that twrp works with encrypted phones on N there isn't a good reason not to use it.

I tried -1 on my encrypted phone, two issues:
1) TWRP doesn't stick. It will revert to stock recovery after 1-2 restarts.
2) Flashing SU doesn't work. Get's an error due to the encryption.

No, not set to require any type of pw at boot.
Is there some way to get root without unlocking the bootloader/wiping?
AFAIK root requires a custom recovery, to flash a custom recovery requires unlocked bootloader, so simple answer is no.

Not necessary, coming from other devices. I am no noob, I know what BL is, but some manufacturers tie certain features to locked BL. Sony for example cripples camera when you unlock.

Otas dont work with twrp, oneplus releases a singed ota update on their forums usually within a week or two after the official ota. These singned updates can be flashed via twrp.

The only downside to unlocking the BL on the OP3 is that you get a warning message (http://i.imgur.com/88NcI2K.jpg) when booting the phone. Lots of people hate it, i like it personally. It makes pressing button combos to get into fastboot/recovery obsolete.

The solution (I think) would be to wipe data and flash the entire stock image for your phone, then re-lock the bootloader. This will make sure that any folders/files pertaining to being rooted are gone and shouldn't cause any problems when it comes to validating your OS. Just make sure you properly unrooted SU by using their uninstaller/unroot tool before wiping and reflashing.

Out of curiosity, why do you even wish to lock the bootloader? Especially with the numerous horror stories of users unable to resurrect a bootlooping device (rather simple to fix if unlocked) because their bootloader is locked.
