[Q] Rooting Tmobile 4.3 OTA help! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Happy New Year Everyone! I have someting I have been trying to do. I did the OTA update to 4.3 that included knox, yes I know stupid. I only did it because I have Tmobile JUMP and I want to return it to tmobile after 6 months and purchase a nexus 5. The question is, How can I root and flash a rom without tripping knox? I am ok about the flash counter because I have triangle away. But if there is ANY way to do this please respond as I want a non OEM rom.
I have a Tmobile Galaxy S 4 ( SGH-M919)
Thank You
Happy New Year!

There's no way as of this writing to test Knox counter.
Someone stated using Saferoot didn't trip the Knox so you might want to look into that.

I dont think Triangle Away is compatible for 4.3. Rooting should be out of the question if you don't want to lose your warranty.

I've been contemplating this and have a sort of similar situation but not that similar. I want to flash my s4 but I updated it to the 4.3 update via Kies and obviously Knox has been installed. Now, my situation at hand is I have insurance through T-mobile to cover accidental damage and because of a drop the bottom left corner of the screen is cracked and over time I just started plucking the shards out and eventually just exposed the entire menu button side to the corner of the screen itself.
Now if I were to flash CF-Auto Root and then install CWM and CM11, will T-mobile still honor the Insurance?
Or if I were to Odin back to the stock mdl or mk2 rom, would they still take the phone back.

I don't see why not. Insurance is totally different than warranty.
Since you updated to 4.3 via Kies, you can Odin back to stock mk2 but not mdl.

Makes plenty of sense considering I'm paying for a service than not. Thanks, that clarified a bit of my doubt.

Note 2, 4.3 boot loader

I have been running stock 4.3 stock with devil kernel but I have been experience problems with charging my battery and some system hangings, had it plugged in for 9 hours and only got to 75 %, went over to CyanogenMod 4.4 nightly and had no problem charging the phone.
My question is, is there a to upgrade to 4.3 official with out having to deal with flashing 4.3 boot loader and have working Wi-Fi? And use stock kernel.
I have been really hesitant to flash stock boot loader and having to deal with tripping knox counter, any help would be great, thanks

Don't worry about Knox. The 4.3 bootloader is way better for your phone. If it is taking that long to charge you are probably damaging your battery with the devil kernel.
Are you planning on needing a warranty repair on your phone. I know mine is already out of warranty. Also there is no official word from Samsung that phones with a tripped Knox will not be covered.
The reason Knox trips is for corporate IT security. It's to protect the phone from having an employee root the device.

I understand what your saying....
But if I'm not mistaken there's a Rom, on the dev section. Based off of Rogers 4.3 stock firmware.
Skynote 10 and I'm quite sure Knox is gone, and you might be able to downgrade your Rom after using that.
That way ya wanna sell it. You can roll it back to 4.1.2 let it take the update. Then it's FULL of (____) all the security it wants...

Can't get into any Recovery Mode
I had done OTA ATT update to 4.3. CF-Auto-root phone. installed TWRP and stuck on Galaxy Note II screen. I can access download mode. But I can't access Recovery Mode. Flashed the ODEX rooted version of MK6 posted on one of the thread in android development link...still stuck. Flashed Philz CWM Recovery from that same thread, still stuck with no access to recovery. HELP!!! :crying:
Are you "Sure" about no recovery being present ??
3 button combo to boot recovery does what ??
Causes Reboot of the device ??
If Odin registers a "pass" after writing to the recovery partition...they try any application that will boot into recovery for you...
The button combo is clearly failing...g

Try this method. Once you run cf auto root you most likely need to update supersu to get root access.

Not sure how the 4.3 bootloader is way better for your phone. . Can you explain?
Personally I'm running the 4.1.2 bootloader with a patched param.
But if someone wants the 4.3 bootloader I would recommend using the leaked one since it can be downgraded.
As far as any of us know Knox doesn't seem to matter. But there is always the unknown isn't there... All I know is that it's forever and totally unnecessary. Unless you can explain how it's "better for your phone".
Everything you need is in this link. Both the 4.3 leaked bootloader which will work and can be downgraded and the 4.1.2 patch (which will also work). WARNING-DON'T USE THIS IF YOU ARE ON THE 4.3 OFFICIAL BOOTLOADER.

It bothers me to see so many folks make light of Knox without knowing the consequences. I sure don't know FOR CERTAIN but I DO KNOW it's permanent for now at least.

New bootloader comes with improved modem that only works on the new bootloader.
Knox doesn't matter because Samsung only has a one year warranty on the phone if you pay for the extra one from the carrier it is still replaceable even with knox tripped.
Only reason you need to worry about Knox is if you phone is a company phone and their system requires you to have knox. Otherwise there is no downside to tripping it.

You don't know what you're saying.
The modem and the bootloader are two different things. Also- the modem works FINE with other bootloaders. I know this for CERTAIN since I'm on a different bootloader AND the 4.3 released modem. (I've also run 4.1.2 based roms with this modem). Where did you get this?

So what are the chances you MIGHT be wrong about Knox as well? How about resale value? Many people value a phone with an unlocked bootloader. Do you PERSONALLY know someone who has returned this phone with a tripped counter? How about future updates? Will you be able to take a future update with a tripped counter? Personally- I DON'T KNOW the answers and won't presume to know. I think you've been spending too much time in the jedi thread where people keep repeating this stuff.

I am sure KNOX is built for corporate security. The reason KNOX even offers this feature is so that a corporate IT department can tell if an employee has been trying to modify a company owned/used device, If the KNOX is tripped it will block the device from connected to compnay servers and internet. This has been confirmed to me by Samsung in a corporate setting as I work as an IT buyer for one of the largest privately own companies in the world. We specifically asked that if an employee tries to modify a device and trips the KNOX can we still return the device to samsung to have KNOX reset so the device and be reissued to a new employee and were told that we could.
Now this was all for corporate use and not for personal use, but this tells me that it is not an issue to trip KNOX, and that Samsung has a way to reset it.
However all of that is besides the point, because the warranty on the device provided by Samsung is only for 1 year. They do not offer a longer one, which means most device are out of warranty already or will be in the next 4-6 months. You could buy a replacement plan from your carrier, but that is a replacement plan not a true warranty. A replacement plan is different from a warranty. Most likely with a replacement plan you would have to pay a deposit and they would give you a refurbished device not your original one back. Also with the extra warranties the device is covered even if it is smashed to pieces, so you don't have to worry about the knox being tripped.
As for OTA updates. It has not been confirmed it it will affect them or not, but it also has not been confirmed we will even get another update. Right now the note2 is not on the list for 4.4.2. Also if you root your phone, which is the only way the KNOX would be tripped, you most likely wouldn't do the OTS update anyway you would probably just flash a new TW based 4.4 ROM or a stock rooted version of the TW 4.4 when it comes out.
the only real reason to worry about the KNOX being tripped is if you are planning on selling your phone in the next 6 months to someone who is planning on using it for their corporate phone. And as someone who works in IT purchasing, their is no way I would let some have a BYOD connect to any of my servers that they bought used.
So all in all its just a lot of people being afraid and going through really complicated processes for no reason. I mean did you freak out when you rooted your phone the first time. That technically voided the warranty right there, tripping KNOX is no different it is just another notification so that you can't connect to a KNOX secured corporate structure.

I used to run the mj4 with no issues also. The patch was originally created for that rom in mind.

Also I do have another meeting with our Samsung Rep in a week from Monday if there are any specific concerns I could try to address them then. They have been open about KNOX with us.
OK so one more question. If I update to 4.3 TW ROM (Skynote or JediMaster X2) with the updated Boot loader stripped from KNOX can I update to a AOSP 4.4 ROM without any issues. I just want to taste what a truly stable 4.3 TW ROM would be without the fear of not being able to come back to AOSP.

[Q] just received replacement S4.. questions regarding knox

Phone was lost, just got replacement this morning.
My last S4 had been rooted running custom firmware for months w/o issue.
Read through a bunch of threads, ranging from the opinion that the bootloader change + knox wont be a big issue to the sky is falling.
Is it recommended to root my phone at this time, I do have JUMP and would be replacing it once something better comes out? The phone is running 4.2.2, caught it trying to update to already.
Thanks.. I know this may seem redundant but haven't been active on these boards since I got my CFW going. Not seeking help in flashing or anything.. just advice

Being that your'e using the T-Mobile M919, the whole KNOX bootloader situation doesn't pertain to you as long as you're sure you're on 4.2.2. Root it, flash it, theme it with Hello Kitty... whatever, it doesn't matter; you can still revert back to stock and reset any tripped counters. 4.3 is when the problems begin and the KNOX counter is implemented and can't be reset.

I second this.
SO LONG AS YOU ARE ON 4.2.2
- You can root flash do whatever, theme with hello kitty or barbie xD like lordcheeto said or keep it stock
- Install recovery and flash away.
- Will always be able to revert back to 100 percent stock
TAKE 4.3 UPDATE
- I think you are still able to root it without tripping knox counter. Can't remember the last status of that was. But as long as you root it without a custom recovery, i think you are ok. From what i can remember, the bootloader checks the recovery status and trips the knox counter based off the recovery that is on the device. If its different then stock, it trips. But double check with Google about this first.
- If you trip knox counter, you will NEVER (as of now and possibly forever) get it back to zero.
Rooting with safe root won't trip knox and also disables it. But recoveries, kernels, roms, etc will trip the flag

Root it with chain fire and never look back.
You're on 4.22, so you're golden. Just flash a rooted stock ROM that's on 4.3 and you'll avoid Knox.
I'm running 4.4.2 and never seen this Knox stuff.

Correct. I've rooted my my second GS4G on 4.3 MK2 and it did not trip the KNOX counter. If you're still on 4.2.2 MDL, then there is no need to update your bootloader. Simply flash ROMs through recovery and flash the 4.3 modem. You will have the goodness of 4.3 on KNOX-less 4.2.2 bootloader. :highfive:

[Q] Clarifying questions..

I'm thinking of upgrading from my GS3, non lte, to the Note 3. As I've looked around the forms here, it would seem as though Knox is an added security measure so t-mobile can more easily detect root?
Is there a way to have root without tripping this counter? Is there a way to flash a custom Rom or kernel without tripping it?
If this has been answered apologize, I did look around before making new thread.
Thanks!
Also on a side note, white or black note 3?

Knox isn't really for T-mobile to detect root/custom firmware but for Samsung warranty. A fair amount of people on here have stated that they still sent their phones in to Sammy for warranty and they still got their phones fixed. T-mobile really only look for cracked screens, water damage and that the phone powers on and boots up. Not to say you'll never have an issue but i would say it's not really that big of a deal to trip the Knox counter. Especially if you bought the insurance like Asurion. I don't think they even care if your rooted and ROM'd
Awesome. My concern here is that I would be disqualified from the jump program... I'd like to get the Note 4 as soon as it comes out.. Is there currently any way to root and flash a room without tripping Knox? Or can we only root without tripping Knox?
Before this gets locked, yes you can root without tripping knox. As mentioned knox is for samsung to deny repairs if they see fit (if the phone is sent to them). Tmobile could care less if the phone is rooted or not. You just have to be careful about warranty repairs for samsung, thats what they may or may not look at.

On the old 4.3 firmware yes you can root with Root De La Vega and not trip the Knox counter but once you put ANY custom recovery it will trip the counter. Now on the OTA 4.4.2 that was released on Wednesday, the only 2 current ways to root (TWRP or Philz CWM) will trip the Knox counter no matter what. So until something comes out like an updated ROOT De La Vega, there's no way to even root without tripping the Knox counter.
Also from what i read, RDLV isn't being developed anymore so unless they decide to do something with it for the all the 4.4.2 releases hitting phones these days there may not be anything for a bit to root without tripping knox.

Did I miss something? Is there a way to Root 4.4.2 without tripping Knox? I don't care I've tripped Knox the first night i had my N3 but I didn't think there was a way. Kningo and RDLV i thought borked the phones and caused bootloops.
My t-mobile store says that if you root your phone then it voids your warranty, so obviously they won't allow me to upgrade... So I know they check for it.. How is it you guys have stores where they don't seem to care?

Just picked up a new Note 3 and root is required to run an app that is critical to me.
I was just about to root and then call and cancel my insurance.. then I started noticing threads where people have claimed root on 4.4.2 without tripping the Knox flag.
This is a new phone, never before rooted. I do own Mobile Oden Pro and Triangle away and am willing to purchase other apps if needed.
Either way this phone will be rooted but I would like to keep my insurance warranty if possible.
Thanks
Edit.. custom recovery would be an added bonus not is not needed.

If your baseband is NB4 or NE6 you can use "Towelroot" for rooting
otherwise if your baseband is NF1 or NF4 Towelroot will not work.
Towelroot will not trip knox.
If you flash any custom recovery knox will get triggered
but so far no one lost their warranty due to triggering knox.
Without custom recovery you will not be able to flash any
custom roms.
Good luck!

You can use your insurance even with knox tripping. It only voids your samsung warranty, not your insurance. Just an fyi.
Sent from my leanKernel 3.4 powered stock 4.4.2 (NF4) SM-N900T
my friend tmobile insurance doesnt care if you have knox trip off
either way you pay one 175 for a new note or screen fix we so i dont matter if you damage the phone or the system
Thanks towelroot worked great with my NB4 baseband..and my needed app works great as well.

[Q] Root FOB6 keeping Knox

Yesterday I returned to the land of the living when I was given a Note 3 to replace my Galaxy Lite. I feel as if I have crawled out of a dark hole back into the light. That said, I got the device and FOB6 had already been applied OTA. It has never been rooted or altered in any way. All of the information I see on the forums describes getting root by reverting to a previous release. I have very slow internet and downloading the original rom and the update to reapply via Odin would take me days. Is there a way, currently, to root with FOB6 already applied that does not trip the Knox counter or require changing the rom?

This will trip KNOX but you can do it without dowloading (downgrading) huge rom... (currently no guide without tripping KNOX, sorry)
Start from Step 1... (you don't have to do steps -3, -2, -1, & 0...Start at step 1...
Thanks for the quick reply. As I'm not sure whether I will need Knox in the future or not, I will hold off on these steps for a couple of days to see if a non-trip method is found.
You only need Knox if your phone is under warranty and its going to samsung for repair.
Otherwise it's just bloat.

Or if you plan to use it, since some of us actually have jobs that require security on our devices to access their networks. Oh, and if you plan to sell your device later and want to be honest about "like new" condition...actually, Samsung warranty is pretty low on the worries list.
Ditto on security protocol.
