As title indicates, is it possible to root the 10.1 without an external SD card? I see this thread that seems to indicated TWRP may do it automatically on the 8.0 tab, but wasn't sure about the 10.1?
Found my own answers. You can use adb sideload from the Android SDK and sideload the root.zip file using CWR.
I found this guide helpful: http://blog.dantup.com/2012/10/fixing-adb-device-not-found-with-nexus-7-in-recovery-mode/

Hi all,
Hope this hasn't been asked/answered (haven't found it yet in the galaxy nexus section).
I'm rooted, have been using a commotio 4.3 rom lately that's worked fine. I thought I'd try something new so I downloaded it, put the .zip file onto the phone (via my Mac in a root folder called "roms"). Went to factory reset the phone and I got all sorts of error messages during the process. When I go to load the rom, in clockwork recovery it says the "sd card can't be mounted." Of note, my phone is encrypted...
I'm having trouble understanding how to do this rooting stuff without an SD card (my last phone had one) - I don't really understand how with the internal storage you can wipe/factory reset and have the ROM you just downloaded and placed in the phone not disappear.
Any thoughts on how I can get my SD card to mount?
Thanks!
1) you cant mount /sdcard in recovery as there is no SDCARD. this has been addressed since the phone came out
2) im pretty sure recovery doesnt understand your phone's partitions since its encrypted.
3) use search.
My N7 is softbricked. I've been unable to flash it back to stock. I've tried several ways and recovery files and none of them work. Is it at all possible to push a zip file to the internal SD card while it's in the bootloader or something along those lines? Using the Nexus Root Toolkit I see that it is possible, however because it's softbricked it won't let me since I can't enable USB debugging and such.
Also, I think one of the problems I might be having is because it doesn't recognize anything as ABD when connecting.
Hi XDA,
I have been trying to install apps directly from the Google Play store to my Team class 10 MicroSD card on my 32GB Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) running Android 4.3 that is rooted and running a custom ROM. I uses command prompt with the following commands:
adb devices
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
then i verified that the install location was set to 2. The problem is that afterwards when I try to install an app from the Play Store, I get an insufficient storage error message. The reason I bought the SD card in the first place was to directly install to it, so I would really like to figure this out. Thank you for your help.

My guess is it could be the following (But I'm not 100%).....you need to format your SD card or your SDcard is duff. If your SD card works when transferring other data such as movies from PC then ignore what I have just said lol.
Hi folks,
On my SGH-M919, I once upon a time had OUDHS-Recovery-jfltetmo-1.0.3.3 installed. However, it couldn't read the external SD (though ROMs that I installed could). At one point, I flashed to stock. It could read the extSD just fine. Then I wanted to install ROMs again. So, I rooted it and installed new boot loaders (specifically recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.2-jfltetmo and recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.2-jfltetmo). Neither could read the extSD. This isn't the end of the world, though it prevents me from completely wiping the internal SD and installing things from fresh (since I need to have whatever ROMs on that internal SD).
The problem is: any ROM that I install now can't read the extSD. Mostly tried cyanogen mod (10 and 11, stable and nightlies), but also tried Avatar and KangBang. So I don't think it's specific to a particular distro.
Any suggestions as to what this might be, or how to proceed hunting this down?
Update: Installing philz_touch_6.15.4-jfltetmo for a recovery lets me install off of the external SD. And when I connect my phone to my computer (using MTP), it lets me view the extSD. I can even go into the terminal and do
ls /storage/sdcard1
and get a list of files on the external SD. However, I can't view that drive in the file explorer.
And, I got it. Turns out I had to enable root access in my File Manager's settings.
OP:
I just used the 1clock root script from Jac10000 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/d855-one-click-root-twrp-recovery-t3072767). I downloaded TWRP manager in order to install TWRP, and got the following message: "Itr seems we can't write to SD card properly. This is common in KitKat and Lolliopop devices. We can patch it so we can write to SD card freely. This will make a change in the system partition".
The SD card referred doesn't actually exist. I do not have an external SD card, only an internal memory! I looked at the permissions in Root browser for the internal SD card, and they all seem to be 777 or 766. No bad permissions anywhere. If I decide to click this button, I'm assuming it would change permissions in some way.. But where, and to what, and are these changes reversable (how?)? If anybody else has had the same issue, speak up.
Stock rom, Lollipop 5.0, D855.

Can it use for D852 ?
@yym789 Check playstore. i also uploaded d852 version(bell and rogers only). Type d852 in search field.
@vargfloejt I also have this message from twrp manager. With and without external sdcard. With all version of twrp ...
I think that twrp manager propose every time this message in the first launch of the application.
I do not apply the patch and it work normaly
