I'm looking at maybe getting a Nexus 7 but I have a more general question. I'd like the 7 to replace my phone, a Galaxy S3 as I am now doing a Uni course and the larger screen would be handy, but I'd prefer to carry only one item and really don't want to have to get a new SIM/Data plan to run the tablet.
It seems tablets (presumably the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 included) don't do phone. They have 3G and 4G/LTE sometimes advertised but it is only for data as near as I can tell. Why wouldn't a manufacturer make a tablet that you could just add a BT headset and have the best of both worlds, a tablet for computing that is also your phone.
Or am I missing something here? (last experience was with a Xoom 2, but the missus has an Xperia Z 10" and it doesn't do phone either)
Is there a simple way to use the Nexus as a phone? I've seen recommendations about Google Talk but do these work OK? (I'm wondering why they don't seem more in use)

There are a few things you can do. You can get the LTE and hope dev's add phone support. I read somewhere earlier that on the old n7 (correct me if I'm wrong), they added SMS support ONLY.
Another option is to try a service like this, which will allow you to possibly make calls from your tablet in that way. http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/19/ppl-connect-virtual-phone/

Short version: As an actual phone connected to the phone network making normal voice plan calls? No. That's not possible at this time and it's unlikely that's going to be working any time soon. Google has gone to some lengths to block this capability.
Slightly longer version: If you just want a phone and don't care about how? Yes. You can get a VoIP plan from any of a number of companies (Vonage, Comwave, MagicJack, etc) who include an Android phone app. In this case, you'll get a Data only SIM from your carrier, stick it in the N7 LTE and use the internet connection to make calls. Downside? If you want to receive calls, you'll have to run the VoIP app's service in the background and that'll eat up more battery. Also, no SMS directly. While the N7 LTE *does* technically support SMS, again Google has gone to some lengths to block outgoing SMS and limit the usefulness of incoming SMSes - there is a fix for this problem. But if you're VoIPing - then you'll have two phone numbers - the one for your VoIP phone and one for the SIM and that's the one you have to use for SMS.
On the other hand, some of the VoIP offer SMS support and there are some Android apps that allow you to route your SMS through their app, which basically restores SMS.
Oh and why haven't they made a phone/tablet? They have. For example: the Viewsonic ViewPad 7 does it. The Samsung Note 10.1 and 8 LTE version does it. The problem with the N7 is that Google's phone is the N5 and they want to keep the tablets and phones separate.
Thanks guys... That's pretty much where I thought things were. I am puzzled as to why - I'd have thought something like the Nexus 7 with phone would be a Monty for market share. Let's face it, phone users are not going to want the bigger form factor anyway, but adding a phone to a tablet of reasonable size (i.e. large pocket) and reasonable weight (i.e.sub 400gm or so) would have people swarming to buy.
There's another reason, and one that is part of my reason for the question - some of us are older. Tiny screens running HD are not exactly eye friendly and Android doesn't do scaleability worth a damn until you are on a web page. A 7 or 8 inch screen at HD is far more readable than a 5 inch. And people my age have disposable income without having to ask our parents.
And once one company does it, they'd all have a version. The market would split in two, large and small screens. As it is, I wonder how many potential phablet users just think 'stuff it, I'll stick with my phone and my laptop/home desktop and bugger the upgrade.' Samsung 8 LTE might be the go - been looking at the Note 3 for exactly the reasons here...
Why Google decided to copy the phone companies in paradigm instead of breaking the market open I have no idea.
It's possible through Google Voice and a third party app. I use Talkatone but there are a few others. They're against the terms of service for Google Voice, and Google has announced that they'll be blocking third party apps like this sometime next year. But they work now anywhere you have a any data connection. However, there's a silver lining: Google added first party voip support for Google Voice lines in the iOS version of Google Hangouts. If you put connect the dots, it looks like Google will give first party voip support for Google Voice through the Android version of Hangouts. They've already pushed Hangouts one step closer to being a one-stop-shop for communication when they made it the default SMS app for the latest version of Android.
But just so you know if you do this or any other voip solution, you should know that you won't have 911 service. It might be worthwhile to purchase a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for that or just keep your old phone handy even if it doesn't have a plan anymore since 911 is ALWAYS available on all mobile phones that can connect to a cellular tower even if there is no paid service for them.
Voice + Voice app (for texting) + GrooveIP (paid version) is the easiest way to go. I suggest a Bluetooth headset unless you don't mind making all your calls in speaker phone. Learn from my mistakes and see if you can find a Bluetooth 4.0 headset as they're easier on battery life than 3.0 ... Plantronics has a half way decent Android app (look for the one with more than 4 stars).
Look up the Asus Fonepad. I would suggest the newest version, with the GB you want. It also has an SD slot. It is carrier ready. It isn't "pure" android, but it is close. And some of the extras are helpful.

As long as you are not in the U.S., the international version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 may be what you need. You can even purchase an S pen that has Bluetooth headset capabilities built in. You would have a phone, tablet and notebook all in one device. Keep in mind last year's version was released in the spring, so an update is likely soon. It does not have nearly the ppi of the N7, and the battery life isn't great, but otherwise it's a good tablet. I have both and prefer the N7 for fun and for reading, but use the Note 8 at work every day. Unfortunately in the US we do not have access to the version with voice capabilities even though there is a data enabled version sold here. I'm not sure if the international version would work here either.

Google Voice and Talkatone worked great when we went on a trip to Italy. I made free calls back to the US from anywhere with Wi-Fi .

I've been using a 7" Nexus as my phone for over a year now (first 2012 wifi only, now 2013 LTE). Free incoming and outgoing calls, I just pay for a 4g data plan with Verizon.
- Texts with Google Voice.
- Incoming calls to Google Voice number ring my Callcentric VOIP #, which rings my PBX then rings the SIP app on the tablet (in my case CsipSimple).
- Outgoing calls go through the Gvoice trunk on Pbxes.org and the caller ID shows up as as my google voice number. Free calls to US and Canada.
Ever since I got the Nexus 2013 the call quality has actually gotten worse though, there must be some setting that needs to be tweaked somewhere (my setup confuses me sometimes)
Anyways look for guides by "acegolfer". He's the man for VOIP stuff.

You are so right. There is nothing right now on the market with: (a) HD screen (1080x1920), (b) 4G, (c) 7" screen
Absolutely nothing. It is amazing the N7 cannot make phone calls.
And you are also right on the "age" but on general use as well. I struggle on my 4.5" smartphone - not only because my eyes are not as good anymore, but also because no web sites can display properly and as soon as you have the keyboard on the screen it's all gone.
The 7" and the weight is an ideal replacement for a smartphone! The business heads in Google obviously need to be sacked.

I currently own an iPhone 4 32GB on AT&T and I am considering a Windows Phone 7 device. Should I go ahead and sell my iPhone and purchase a device? I currently own a Zune (which I am selling) with a Zune Subscription (which I plan on keeping) and I am looking into selling my PS3 for an XBOX 360.
I have a lot of music, so that's what I do most. I also text and use the internet a lot, as well as check email. I also use Pandora quite a bit too (though with the Zune marketplace on the phone, probably not as much). I play games, but not often. I love the battery life of my iPhone. I also have an Otterbox to protect it's beauty. I am also a big fan of its screen and resolution. I use my phone as a camera too. Also, I want better navigation than what I currently get on my iPhone, which is MapQuest 4 (since the iPhone Maps sucks for navigation).
I have been considering the Samsung Focus, HTC Surround, and the LG Quantum. Are there more for AT&T I should consider? I really like the Dell Venue Pro, but it seems like it's not offered for AT&T.
So, what do you guys think? Should I jump ship? By the way, I LOVED the Zune and it's interface, if that helps.

-the software keyboard is. a-may-zing. I can type almost as fast on it as i can with two hands on a desktop. Bar none, the best I've ever used. If you text, this will blow you away. It just knows what you meant to type
-the zune player leaves a LOT to be desired, sound quality wise. wp7 needs an eq app soon. It'll get one, but for now, expect a flat sound. Very dissappointing.
-I don't know why I'm reading bad things about it, but the new IE is so fast it's overwhelming. It renders things very very quickly. Better than my wife's iPhone.
-the interface and UI is awesome. It's honestly the next step in smartphone software. Very impressive especially once you get used to it
-great Facebook integration. It adds all your Facebook/SIM contacts/hotmail contacts to one "contacts" app. Which at first sounds like too much. But after using it, I never want to go back. I have a question on the sound. Is it comparable to the Zune, better or worse? What about in comparison to the iPhone?
I want to play with it but work and college kind of get in the way.
Like said above, go into a store and play with one. I'm gonna have to agree to everything sure said, windows phone 7 is amazing..the user interface is incredible. I've only had my HD7 for 4 days and I can't put it down. It's so smooth, the social integration with Facebook and your contacts is genius. Go play with one I doubt you'll be dissapointed

With that list. Go for it. Now your decision boils down to which one.
Zune player sounds just fine. He must have really bad headphones or something. But it's at the very least on par with the iPhone if not better.
However, OP, I recommend you stick with the iPhone 4 for now. Several reasons.
WP7 is currently bug infested. You should probably wait and see how and if Microsoft is going to deal with it. You also should generally wait until Mango to see whether WP7 will take off or not. It's a bit of a gamble as of right now.
If you insist on taking the chance with WP7, I recommend you wait for Nokia's WP7 phones. The current hardware is pretty good but Nokia phones will probably have nice exclusives and, if they base them on the concepts, will be the sexiest phones out there.
All signals essentially point to 'wait.'
Based on friends of mine who have made the jump, I'd say go for it. They all love the UX on Phone 7 and while the platform does miss some functionality today it's not something that you will notice on a daily basis.
In the end though, it's a question only you can answer, so I'll agree with most others here and tell you to go have a play with it in store.
I have been a long term Windows phone user (version 5, 6.1 and 6.5). Unfortunately my current MDA Vario has developed a speaker problem and I'm forced to get a new phone (T Mobile have previously 'fixed' the problem which has now returned)
What you tend to forget is that you shouldn't buy an operating system - you purchese functionality. The key thing is whether the phone can satisfy all your requirements.
As for me, Windows 7 doesn't currently satisfy 3 key requirements:
1. No internet tethering out of the box (you have to really delve down to make this work)
2. No turn by turn navigation
4. No decent ebook reader which can read either lit or mobi format (although the Kindle application has been issued, there is no easy way to load my old books which I haven't purchased from Amazon). All in all I'm very disappointed that MS Reader has not been upgraded
As a mainly business user, I'm not really too interested in Zune or Games and am a bit unhappy about syncronisation via the cloud. As a haooy Napster user (supported in 6.5), I would have to swop to Zune
So what have I decided. I have gone ahead and purchased a used HTC Diamon Pro 2 running 6.5. This will do everything I want and I will wait until Windows 7 finally catches up.

1. While I understand what you're saying it really doesn't ring true with me. If you own a Samsung you can enable tethering in 15 or so taps (including entering all the numbers).
2. Really? I have turn-by-turn on my Omnia7. Works great too. AT&T also seem to be offering some sort of navigational package, as does several other carriers around the world.
I can't comment on the ebook reader situation as I find the phone too small to read large chunks of text on anyway, but your point seems valid enough.

Really? What's your problem with the cloud exactly? Not being confrontational here, just wondering what, if any, gripes you have about using a secure always available filestore. I can understand some people not wanting to store their confidential documents on a random SkyDrive, but as a business you can run a locked down Sharepoint server locally.
I moved from a 32gb iPhone 4 to a Samsung Focus on the basis of the strength of the Zune platform. There have been drawbacks to moving over to such a new platform (marketplace bug being one main one, lack of apps being another) but also benefits such as the close facebook integration, UI, live tiles and above all, the zune integration.
I've had no sense that the zune player quality is worse (nor better) than the iphone. The desktop client and zunepass blow iTunes away. There really is no comparison.
I would play around with current phones, but as someone above said, you may want to wait and see if they announce any Nokia phones in the April timeframe (MIX 11). Although I guess the resale value of the iP4 will decline after the iP4s/5 gets released this summer.

A) No, my headphones are good quality. The PSP (generation ONE), and Samsung Omnia 2 blow it out of the water. They sound EQ'd, with presence and body. My Quantum just sounds flat.
B) After reading your post, you sound like a hater. So OP, please disregard his comments. Wp7 is not "bug ridden", it works just fine. Not sure why you insist on claiming getting a wp7 is "taking a chance". I think that description would be more apt to an Android phone, as the fragmentation has assured no one can tell which device will actually be good. As for wp7, there are hardware minimums across the board, and the software is smoother than silk. Haters gonna hate I suppose.

No. You shouldn't, especially if you already have a Zune.
That's just my opinion.
I had almost the same exact decision to make a few weeks ago. I was going to upgrade and it was either the iPhone 4 or the Samsung Focus. I went with the Samsung Focus because I already have an iPad, but it truly is a great device. Theres some bug's with it, but I'm counting on Microsoft to fix them.
Things I like:
1. Camera button
2. Interface (duh)
3. Facebook integration (I like being able to add a contact and have it automatically pull in all that users information for me)
4. Nice keyboard (like it better than the iPhones, but it still has its gripes)
5. Zune Software instead of iTunes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6. Bigger screen (Focus has a 4 inch screen and it is a big difference from the iPhone's small 3.5 inch screen)
7. Bing voice search (this is something I show all my friends. I can just say "hamburger" and it finds all the local hamburger joints around me wicked fast)
8. Flash support is coming (http://wmpoweruser.com/flash-10-2-incoming-but-no-wp7-date-announced/)
Things I don't like:
1. Marketplace is very slow, laggy, and unstable
2. Battery life isn't quite as good as the iPhone 4
3. Camera settings reset (this is not a feature Microsoft...)
4. Not as good browser (no html 5, different format that isn't quite as mobile friendly, no reordering of bookmarks).
5. Apps need PERMISSION to run under the lockscreen. If they don't even have this option they must be relaunched after you unlock your screen (why?!?!?!)
6. Less API support
7. No multitasking (will be coming this year though)
All in all make the jump as you have a 30 day period to return it (I'm still debating). If you keep it and you end up not liking it after awhile you will be just in time to upgrade to the iPhone 6 when it comes out in 2013 (possible benefit?)!

I've never used a Zune so I can't comment, but see my other post about comparing it to other devices. My wife has an iPhone, but I've never tested them side by side (that would include hooking each one up to itunes/zune and transferring the same song, etc... I'm just way too lazy for that, sorry, at least I'm being honest)

See, there it is. I've been surfing on my phone since I got it... never had a problem rendering any site. Unless you're going to some flash-laden bloatfest, I don't understand how you can't think that this IE is fantastic.

1. That's one phone on one carrier. That doesn't work. If you have T-Mobile the Samsung hack will not work. It's an outliar, and non-factor in the grand scheme of things.
2. No one in their right mind pays for Turn by Turn on a smartphone unless they need offline maps. Why pay $10 a month for Navigation when an HD2 can do it for free in Windows Mobile with the Bing App? Or an Android phone with Google Maps? $10 a month is a lot to pay just for Navigation.
The only carrier that makes sense for is Sprint, since they give away their Navigation features for free if you have their $69 (soon 79) plan. But Sprint currently has no WP7 devices.

That's your opinion, but you have pinch to zoom and automatic text restructuring in these apps that make it trivial to read. This wouldn't be a big issue if Microsoft had decent Skydrive integration in the phone. In that case you'd just need to upload them to you skydrive and find an app that can read that file format. But that isn't coming for over 6 months...
Really? What's your problem with the cloud exactly? Not being confrontational here, just wondering what, if any, gripes you have about using a secure always available filestore. I can understand some people not wanting to store their confidential documents on a random SkyDrive, but as a business you can run a locked down Sharepoint server locally.

Some people just like to have better control over their stuff. There's nothing wrong with it and he doesn't have to have a problem to have this specific qualm with any smartphone platform. They are all a bit too cloud-centric, IMO.

There are HTML5 Mobile websites that are much better to use than their desktop (or WAP) counterparts on a smartphone browser.
touch.facebook.com >>> facebook.com or m.facebook.com on a mobile browser - by far. That is just one example. There are dozens if not more. HTML5 support being missing is a strike. NOt saying they need to implement the entire HTML5 Draft Spec tomorrow, but launching with basically no support for it was not a good idea, IMO.
With Multi-Tasking and third party browsers this would not be an issue, though, since we'd probably have Opera or some other Mobile Browser (probably WebKit) ported to it. If Microsoft had implemented a dual (Trident + WebKit) rendering engine, that would have been a killer feature... With the ability to set defaults on a site by site basis, of course.

1. I disagree as it's not only achievable on the Samsung handsets (of which there are actually 2 available), the LG ones are just as easy. HTC handsets can also tether but IIRC, yes, you do have to dwelwe a little deeper. Point is, out of the 9 launch handsets, 4 can tether by entering a few numbers onto the phone - so do what people did way back when, chose a device based on functionality rather than looks. Also, as a business user, get yourself an off contract device - it costs the same (or in many cases less) in the long run, but gives you more choice. Also, don't forget the world is a lot larger than the US, the Omnia7 can be had on pretty much any network you like in Europe - on-contract if you so please.
2. I don't pay. Navigon came free with my off-contract Omnia7. Sure, I had to spoof the Navigon http server for map downloads other than Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, but there is no monthly fee. I realize some of the other carriers do charge you (ATT being one), but the point here is that there are options available to you. Regarding paying for navigation, as much as I love Bing (or even Google) maps due to its satellite imagery it's not, IMO, a replacement for a dedicated navigational tool ... yet, and looking at the sales statistics for these apps on the iPhone, most people seem to agree with me.
I'm not condoning the fact Bing did not have turn-by-turn out of the box, far from it, but to broadly say "No turn-by-turn" available and use that as one of three reasons for dropping the OS is just wrong.

Of course it's my opinion. Pinch to zoom or text reflow makes no difference to me, I still don't like reading books on a 4" display. That's what tablets are for IMO. Like I said though, I wasn't really commenting on it and agreed that his point was valid.

Better control? How can you have better control than a correctly configured and secured Sharepoint server hosted by yourself? Sure, you could live in the old days and manually copy files on and off your phone, forever wondering if that really was the final version or the second to last draft or whether your colleague had amended it between your last sync and the presentation, but really. Are you serious?
Using your phone as a mass storage device was never a good idea - it was a stop-gap measure because at the time it was invented/popular we didn't have S3 or properly configured corporate networks that allowed users access on-the-go.

I'm not saying its a bad browser, it is in fact very good, but not quite as polished as iOS's Safari browser. I like to organize my bookmarks from most used -> least used, but WP7 only organizes them alphabetically. iOS use's WebKit for its browser which is more supported than IE's rendering engine (what is it?). If you go to gmail for example you will get a hampered down dump phone mobile view (this is simply for example, other sites do this as well).
Yeah, ironically IE renders mobile sites way worse than Android or iPhone. The websites are partly to blame because of course they have had lots of time to optimize for those platforms. I don't mind the rendering of full sites... sometimes the font sizes are way off, but overall not bad and at least it's quick.
All in all the browsing experience is not as good as the other mobile platforms. I've got high hopes that IE9 fixes that.

Preordered iPhone5. Received it Friday Sept 21. Returned Sunday 2-3 days later. Picked up t-mobile Galaxy S3 right after returning the iPhone5.
So glad I am back on Android. From the 2-3 days of ownership of the iPhone5/iOS (as this was my 1st iPhone and I just wanted to experiment to see how I'd like it), I was not able to do very basic things I wanted, or any reasonable person would expect to be able to do to a phone.
1st off, Ringtones. Anyone owning a phone would have a reasonable expectation to be able to change / add custom ringtones. Should I have to pay for it? Maybe, that is if I don't want to cut the songs myself. I already have ringtones from my last phone which was basic mp3s I could have drag/dropped over. But with iPhone, I had to go through tedious process of utilizing iTunes as a medium, converting to AAC format, moving onto desktop, deleting the ones in iTunes, then renaming the .m4a format to .m4r, then dragging it back into iTunes, then syncing. I could have done all this on Android by just plugging it to my comp, locate Ringtones folder, dropped it in, and done.
Sync was an issue too. I'm pretty sure most people use gmail in some way, and all my contacts are in gmail. Tried to get contacts to sync over to iCloud was a hassle. It would only sync the root folder group of contacts and not the other groups. I had to manually export each contact group to my comp, then import into iCloud. Now if I added/made changes to a contact on my iPhone, I'd have to go back home, and re-enter a new contact in google. It's just not a seamless process.
Also the AppStore. Every 15 minutes I want to get an app, I am asked to enter a password. And Apple requires a complicated pw with uppercase/lowercase, numbers, special characters. It's not by any means easy to type on the phone every time I want to install something.
No widgets either on iOs. No notification widgets to easy turn on/off options like WiFi, screen rotation, GPS, Bluetooth. I have to go into settings and navigate through menus to turn them on/off.
I didn't like how all the apps just show up on the home screen as iOS doesn't have a drawer like Android, and I'd have to dump everything into folders if I didn't want to see it. Also all the icons just align from right to left, top to bottom. I can't change where they are on the page except for the order it flows. I read maybe JailBreaking can help with this customization, but I don't think I want to wait that long for an untethered JB to be available for the iPhone5 to be released.
Forgot to add, I have a TF700 and I utilize TabletTalk to sync SMS to my Tablet and send SMS via the Tablet. This wouldn't have worked out for an Android Tablet with an iPhone.
Side issue that affected me, but unrelated to Apple, was the fact Sprint had deceptive advertising regarding their LTE coverage. As you guys know, iPhone is either 3G or LTE; no WiMax. In DFW, even though coverage map shows I am clearly in 4G LTE coverage, Sprint indeed only had 1 LTE tower up and running in the other side of Dallas of where I am at. And Dallas is a pretty damn big city, so all I ever saw was 3G. Sprint's 3G was < 1mbps down/upload, which is unacceptable as I am paying for "unlimited 3g/4g data" cost of an additional $10/month. It is hardly enough bandwidth to stream music / video or let alone download apps unless I am connected to WiFi; which then goes back to the point of why am I even paying for data. Unlimited data is pointless at that speed and I'm not going to wait 1-2 yrs for Sprint to finish rolling out LTE in Dallas; since by then my contract would have expired anyways and I could just switch to Sprint then.
But overall, I didn't try to / demand anything complicated out of the phone. The simple things I wanted it to do, didn't go as I had expected, even though I kept hearing how easy iPhones are to use, and how stable it is. Stable OS, smooth processing, and pretty, yes. But basic simple customization / syncing, no. And now I totally understand when Android users are trolling iPhone users.
That's why the iPhone has those mesmerizing screen transition animations. Supposed to help relieve the headache after all the frustration. J/K.

If you have a mac is easier to import your Google contacts to iCloud, or you can set up Gmail as a exchanged account and will import and update all your contacts automatically (kind of like android) anyways, I'm about to return my iPhone 5 is amazing looking device but not for my needs like I said before, the only thing I miss the most(besides a few apps) is battery life in stand by, really good phone not my cup of tea tho

Nice to see your in the Galaxy... the cryphones will never be better then android. They have no comparison.. you take a phone that does things and can't be changed and "compare" it to a phone that let's u do whatever you want on it.. I just never see it as a fair comparison.. that's like saying the cryphones are a Datsun and the androids are lambos... and then people say the cryphones are better.. there are in different leagues altogether. Cryphones = lockdown no customization like android... but glad to see u here. Many people waste so much time n money on apple.. and now its biting them in the wallet and a$$... he he he I love it. BTW if u have a DSLR cannon camera check out chainfire's DSLR controller app.. I just found it yesterday and I can control my camera with my phone... its so dope!!! Sgs3 BEST PHONE I'VE HAD YET. Lots of valid points, but overall it's just an issue with competing ecosystems. You had already had some Androids, so most of your ecosystem was setup through gmail and google.
For a Mac user coming over to an Android phone, much of the same problems pop up (no easy itunes music/podcasts integration, etc)
But overall just by its open source nature, Android is much easier to work with and setup. And conversely since Apple likes to control all aspects of user experience, you don't get all the features and selling points (i.e. the iPhone is so "easy" to use!) unless you are subscribed to the entire Apple ecosystem.

Tmo has really fast data at DFW, wasn't able to leave the airport hah but in it the 4g was great. For ringtones you can just longpress a song in the media player. No need to even move it.
My gmail calendar syncs between my iPad/net/phone perfectly. Haven't tried contacts but I'm sure there is a way. iOS is definitely a different experience though. I really like the app tray on android too. But iOS has the advantage of searching when you hit home twice.

Video and/or Photos (i work with both) so I do run Macs at home. For mobile I'm with you though, loving my GSIII
Since I do not do any media creation I have no reason to keep an apple product. I use my S3 and my Nexus 7 for almost all of my day to day use.
Otherwise I use my little netbook but those times are getting further and further in between.
I was interested in the iPhone 5, but now that you reviewed here and I'd an android user before, I will just wait for the note 2. I do like Apple products, just hate the Apple company...

I just though I share my story here:
My HTC desire died because of to much freedom after 1.5 year of custom ROM flashing and partition profile switching(hboot).(I think I have switched between all available ROMs for the HTC Desire before it died one months ago)
I always flashed a new ROM because non of them was what I wanted.
Sure Oxygen was awesome but it sopped to receive updates.
MIUI was awesome but it stopped to to receive updates. (For Desire)
I spent most my time on Gingerbread and ICC custom ROMS and always had stability issues.
I know that if I get an iPhone I will still get updates for it 2 years from now.
If I get a galaxy S3 I will get jellybean but after that there is nothing promising that I will get Key lime pie.
When I get an iPhone all apps in the app store will work on it without problem.
That is maybe the case for galaxy S3. But it's not guaranteed.
I'm also tired of all the customization options. It's great to be able to customize so much but I never was able to get it exactly how I wanted it to be anyway.
The iPhone isn't nearly have as much customize options. But still, it's enough for me and I used MIUI ROM so it reminds a lot of the iOS.
I never even used widgets after a while because widget made my already crappy battery run out of ´cream´ even faster.
I'm still thinking of maybe take a S3 though because of the iPhone seems to have a bit of problems(easy scratches and some other minor stuff)
Though the S3 in my eyes is REALLY big. I can still cancel my order on the iPhone so if anyone after reading this can convince me to get the S3. Please go ahead.
I really loved my time with android. But I kind of got sick on it. Maybe if I try both the iPhone 5 and GSIII I can finally make a 100% accurate choice.

I won't try to dissuade you. If T-Mobile hadn't given me a good deal to stay, or I weren't on T-Mobile to start with, I might have decided to give the iPhone 5 a try. That said, my understanding from a relative who happily uses Apple products is that, if as I do you use Google calendar and Gmail, then there's no significant advantage to the iPhone over the Galaxy S III. What you're left with is a choice between two very good products, each of which has advantages and disadvantages.
So you preordered a phone? What provider? Then used it and didnt like it. Then you got a S3 today and you have already rooted it? Judging by your sig?
@OP I moved to the dfw area a few months ago and had Sprint. nearly two months went by, I had absolutely no service and they said it's because they're "upgrading". I don't call that much of an upgrade if I can't even make calls. And the wimax was still awful. So you made the right choice switching. I also switched to tmo, got an amazing deal and am loving the 4g, WiFi calling, and service in general. Plus the s3 makes it that much sweeter.
If you haven't yet, make sure to call and ask them to add the free WiFi calling onto your account.

I'm going to visit a local store and try out the S3 and check if it's possible to get my interest back to android.
Than only time will tell if I decide to cancel the order or not and get the S3 instead.
Also the 4G version of the Galaxy S3 is not released here in Sweden yet I think.

I had T-Mobile to begin with (grandfathered with unlimited data). My plan doesn't end until December, but I figured I got tired of flashing unstable roms on my Nexus S that I'd give iPhone a try, as people kept saying "oh it's so easy to use and it's so stable". I used the iPhone 5 from Friday afternoon till Saturday night. I ran into too many customization / sync issues where I just had enough of it and I wiped the phone clean and ready to be returned. Sunday came and I called up Sprint, and cancelled my plan and set up my phone to be returned. Afterwards, went over to T-Mobile as I have the itch for a new phone. Spoke w/ the rep at the store and turns out I could upgrade my account for some reason (though I kept thinking I had to wait the full 2 years to upgrade my line). So picked up the GS3 right then and had everything up and running. I was already using ParanoidAndroid 2.13 on my Nexus S, so it wasn't difficult to get everything up and running. This is much improved over my last phone. 2GB ram vs 512MB (380MB usable) and 1.5GHz+ (oc'd to 1.7 via LeanKernel) vs 1.2GHz Marmite Kernel. GS3 was an overall much better experience.
As for the iPhone, it's a great phone (smooth, fast, and pretty). Great build quality and finish and amazing display. It did feel more delicate as the surface seemed a bit more prone to scratches (back and sides). Mine however was fine, but I don't speak for everyone. The anodized aluminum is more likely to get scratched, and I got the white one so it is less noticeable. The GS3, even though plastic, actually seemed more durable to everyday use, as one would probably not want to constantly worry about scratching the beautiful iPhone shell. Also accessories are scarce for the iPhone. My case was pre-ordered, and still not shipped out today. Cancelled that as I no longer plan on sticking with the iPhone. Also trying to get additional USB->Lightning cables was going to cause me to have to wait another 2-3 weeks due to backorder.

As for Sprint, they had deceptive LTE advertising. I canceled well within the 14 day trial period ( < 72 hours to be exact). Sprint's 3G is the equivalent of dialup. T-mobile's 4G, even though not real 4G, is still comparable to cable/dsl speeds. Fios-like speeds of LTE is great, but not necessary. Just thinking about the data cap from AT&T or Verizon, as I'm not grandfathered on those plans, would mean constant worry about if I'm hitting cap or not. But anyways, I didn't sign up for Sprint to use my iPhone on WiFi or wait the 1-2 years till they finally finish rolling out LTE in DFW.
BTW, did you end up paying any termination fees? You stated 2 months went by. I just figured, I'd GTFO ASAP haha. Sprint's 3G was unacceptable in today's terms.

Yup Apple sucks
Last week end I upgraded my Cell to the newer HTC ONE. I just had enough with the low battery life of the GLide and the constant Bluetooth issues on various Roms not to mention annoying GPS Synch. Since all these issues are on a Samsung Product I decided to jump ship to the Newest HTC phone. I am simply making this post to wonder if many others have moved on as well to other phones.
I will miss my Keyboard and my MicroSD slot but I think I will manage.
I will still occasionally be checking GLide Forums but may spend more time on the HTC ONE forum. Just wanted to say I really loved and still do love the GLide Community. Too bad Samsung never released a JB Rom for this phone.
What do you think I can get for my GLide if I wanted to sell it? HTC is offering 100$ for my old Cell phone because I purchased a ONE.
I always preffer htc devices, but, I buy glide because I dont have enough money and I want a tegra device (htc onlyu has tegra 3 and is too expensive for me) The HTC ONE is excelent, I still have the glide because I dont have money to buy other phones
I hate HTC devices.. will always be Samsung but not far from moving on

GSMARENA doesn't have anything on future phones with physical keyboard... so this is probably the last of the mohicans.
I'm thinking about the Nexus 4, but I have no idea if I'll be able to live without keyboard.

Q10 looks nice, but I am not sure about BlackBerry and there app store. Notice TV commercials always say that apps are available for android and IOS never blackberry anymore. I do hope they come back as it is a Canadian company.

THe HTC has a SnapDragon 600 Processor rated at 1.7 ghz Quad core. Same as the S4 just the S4 is clocked at 1.9. It did not cost much Rogers waived my upgrade charge and let me get it at 149.99 on a 3 year contract after only having my GLide for 1 year and a half. WooHoo!
I'm not planning on moving along any time soon. I don't care about having the 'latest and greatest' phone, because to me it's just a phone. It sends text messages, makes phone calls, takes photos and videos, and allows me to use my ebook reader.
I used to want the qwerty keyboard for gaming and MUDding, but I don't really do either of those anymore. But by the same token, why should I bother "upgrading" just to get rid of the keyboard? I don't see the point in spending money when I don't have to.
And I'm not too fussed about not being able to upgrade to JB. I'm happily using ICS which does all I want it to do - GPS works, Bluetooth headset profile works in the car, and I have enough of a degree of customisation and flexibility to make it easy and enjoyable to use. I only upgraded from my Milestone 2 because there were particular aspects of that phone that were very frustrating.
So, will I upgrade any time soon? I don't think so. I actually have a spare Glide (still in original, unopened packaging) which I plan to list on eBay and sell, but I've only had the phone for 7 months now and don't see any legitimate reason to spend money on a new one.
But that being said, I don't have the same interest in development and 'ooh shiny' that a lot of other people do. I don't see the need to upgrade every year, or every 2 years. The phone is fast enough, it boots quickly, and it serves my needs. I also know there are other people having issues with GPS with this phone, and considering how dependent we are on the technology these days, I can understand that as being a reason to move on.
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. If you actually feel you have a genuine reason to move on, then do so. But I would suggest taking a pragmatic view of the whole picture - perhaps just downgrade to ICS (which really isn't actually that bad) and you'll have your working Bluetooth again.

I really want that phone but here, is very expensive, even with contract, I dont like contracts in my country, so, I buy my phones in ebay.

are you using plain ics stock? looks there is the only way to get bluetooth working again
I'm using IcePop ROM, which I think requires you to flash the AT&T ICS ROM first. Since trying out the JB builds all I did was restore my previous IcePop ROM backup and flash the kernel again to get it working.

When I had stock ICS w/ 14toggles .. My battery life exceeded 20 hours (with JuiceDefender ultimate installed).. bluetooth worked, and GPS worked once the fix to the gps.conf and sirgps.conf was applied...
Glad you found a phone that you enjoy but sorry to hear you couldn't make it work with the Glide - especially with a fully working CM just around the corner.
Yeah, the glide is better with CM, (battery, performance, etc) I just miss skype and magicjack
PD: yohan4ws, I try juice defender, but, always turn off my wifi in my house and I never receive whatsapp message only with screen on, I give time to settle and learn, but always give me problems dont know how you use it

Ya, I got a Galaxy S3 4G. I do miss having the physical keyboard but having the bigger screen makes using the onscreen keyboard acceptable.
I still have the Glide, but reverted it back to its original Rogers GB, as it was the most stable and functional with that ROM.

I just recently got the glide and absolutely love it.
It's super fast and smooth on cm10.1. Even the custom ICS roms are pretty good.
The keyboard is absolutely terrible. I only use it when working in a terminal emulator doing programming (need lots of ();\ type stuff, slightly easier.)
The Stratosphere has a much better keyboard, I'm sad to say, and it is nowhere near as good as my stolen torch was.
Anyway, the Tegra 2 is awesome for me. I build and compile medium sized c++ projects on it and run a Django webserver on it for development/testing of a backend system I'm building.. so I can do everything on the phone directly.
I don't watch a lot of video, take a lot of pictures, or do other "smartphone-y" things on it. But for what I do, it's absolutely amazing.
Oh, I also use the native SIP dialer in android for 100% of my voice communication. I made a SIP gateway on one of my servers in the US for Google Voice. 100% free US calls as long as I have data anywhere in the world.
I really can't imagine what a faster/fancier phone would enable me to do that I can't do now.
Oh, I also have a larger 3rd party battery, and run the Ondemand governor for maximum battery life. If I keep it in airplane mode most of the time I can forget to charge it overnight and still have enough juice to get through the next day only using it for critical things.
Very happy with the phone and ROMs overall. (I'm currently building cm10.1 to work on the speaker/headset and then bluetooth issues.)
I moved on to the S3 and gave my wife the Glide. I couldn't take the lack of dev support any longer.

Took me about 10 minutes to set up. Then 3+ hours just playing with it .
I have a VPS that I do development and various things like this. Have even considered scripting it for self-service and monetizing it a bit. Would be very easy (and cool) to do.

I've just received my new N1 (with Play Store pre-installed!) and have also pre-bought a couple of cases from ebay which both state they are smart cases which have sleep/wake functionality. The problem is that neither cases works having no effect on the tablet at all.
So I'm wondering if the tablet itself actually has this functionality. If it doesn't it will be a real deal breaker for me. I am not going back to endlessly clicking to sleep a tablet, especially the amount of times I use it every day.
I can, in fact, answer my own question here and for anyone else wondering as I've sent out a few emails and have now got the responses.
I can confirm that the N1 DOES NOT have sleep/wake functionality! Astonishing that such a basic rudimentary feature wasn't installed on this tablet. I can also conform that it will not make an audible sound when plugged in to charge to confirm charging is activated/on, you know, like every other contemporary phone or tablet!
If you couple this with the lack SD Card expandability and their idiotic marketing/sales program for this tablet you can only say that Nokia have scored one massive own-goal.
It's so disappointing for a tablet which showed plenty of promise. The only option now looks to wait for Asus Zenpad 8 S with 4gb storage. Now THIS is what Nokia should have been making.

Bought one of these.... http://www.eglobalcentral.co.uk/nokia-n1-32gb-wifi-silver-en-2.html It comes pre-installed with all standard Google apps inc. Play Store. No need to root etc.
The feature may come native within Android M but if the device doesn't have the requisite hardware (magnet) then surely it just won't work. Such a massive oversight by Nokia.
I must pick up my tablet twenty times a day for both work and social and tbh I'm not going to start endlessly doubling tapping, it's so 2010. I've got used to the 'instant on' experience having owned numerous Samsung phones and tabs and also the MiPad so I'm not going back. I'll wager the Asus ZePad will come with it installed.

All you need is a magnet, spare yourself the emails... on the bright side we got a kernel with tap to wake, so im kind of ok with that...

hi is their a way for me to keep my number i have on my n7 and transfer it to a calling program i can download from the store? i dont want to give up my n7 but it seems some carriers are going beyond to stop people using the phone. so i want to switch over to a tablet. i think the s7 is a bit small for my taste and im pretty sure the phone wont still be working when the s8 comes out with the 6.2 inch screen. im a huge of big phones like mega 6.3 and galaxy w from korea with a 7 inch screen. phones with a big screen makes a difference. i upgraded to n7 but downgraded screen. massive difference.
Lots of ways to do this. I've used ObiTalk for this, but the app now crashes at startup on my Galaxy Tab A, so that may not be a good bet. My number is in a Google voice account and forwarded to a number in my ObiTalk account. You might check out Ring Central, they seem fairly reliable. You'll need to open an account then port your number over. Best to do it before it's blocked because otherwise the verification process may be difficult.
