Hey guys, I currently have a MacBook Air 11, and I am looking for a tablet that I can use for when I don't wanna pull out my Macbook.
I am trying to spend less than $300. So I can get a refurbished Tab 3 10.1 for $225. However I can also get the first Galaxy Note 10.1(first edition) for $250.
I also can get an iPad 3rd gen for about $275.
So I am a bit conflicted. I just want something cheap that I can browse the internet on, play a few games, and use SmartGlass for my XboxOne
If look around get a nexus 10 for under 300 or nexus 7, if not just go with refurbished one

Would the Nexus 10 be better than the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?
Depends what your users are going to be. Being you have a Mac, I say go with iPad (as much as I hate saying that). You already have apple asps and usernames that would make it easier for you.

Well I do have a Macbook, and an iPhone 5. But I am trying to get out of the apple ecosystem.
I'm going to get an android phone when my upgrade is up.
Basically my uses are going to be: Using while I'm in bed, on the couch to mainly surf the web, email, play a few games here and there, and use for SmartGlass for my Xbox. If it's anything more than that, I'll just use my Macbook.

I think it is wise to switch as long as you've done your research first. It can be expensive switching ecosystems, but Android tends to be much cheaper that iOS from what I've witnessed at least. But that is only part of what makes Android wonderful. As for the Tab 3 10.1, right now, I'm struggling because I wanted it to have user switching. That's something supported by Jellybean, but alas, Samsung has omitted it from this build. So I've been searching everywhere for custom ROMs but it seems that no one is developing for it because it runs on Intel and people aren't used to that structure just yet. All I can do it root is and tweak things here and there, but not what I want it to, so my point of view is a little skewed toward dislike.
If you have the funds, I would recommend the Nexus 10 32GB. Unfortunately, Nexus devices don't have microSD expansion like the Galaxy devices, but it has all the features it should and it would be easy to find custom development for it once you get bored with the stock UI.
TBH I personally would NOT recommend you buying the tab 3 10.1. I'd rather buy a Nexus 7 2013 or a Nexus 10 or a LG Gpad 8.3.
thsi is because of the silly Intel processor within the tab and Android not really cooperating with it.
You'll be better off running an ARM processor.
Just my 2 cents. Hope you enjoy whatever tablet you buy.
And as much as I dislike Windows 8 it works well on tablets. So that is also a good choice IMO
Good luck !

I have the tab 3 10.1 and it's a pretty good tablet. There's nothing so far about it that I don't like, BUT the resolution.

Well I don't need the user switching, I mean this is just going to be a device that I use when I am not using my Macbook for fun or leisure. It wont be something that I rely on.
How would you say the tegra 3 compares to the intel chip in the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?

How much faster is the Nexus 7 2013 going to be than the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1? I am considering the Nexus 7 now possibly.

Do you think it would be a good first device to dive into android with?
Thank you all for replying.
I had a dell streak 7 and it had a poor following for development, but I used it enough to know my next tab would be a 10 inch.(7 inch Too Small) I just got this tab 3, and it is killer. It doesn't have any custom ROMS that are drastically different that stock, Still...it is running the newest version of Jelly Bean, and really doesn't need "upgrading" It is so snappy and fast, I am tickled to death with it. I love the stock OS, and I figure by the time I get bored with it Cyanogen Mod will be available for it. Of course my view is also skewed because I was struggling with a Dell Streak 7 (slowpoke) before I got my Tab 3. I also enjoy (watching) the developers forum for this device, it's very entertaining because they discover new things about this tablet every day it seems. That stuff is mostly over my head right now, but I hope to learn more, so I can contribute in the future. Good luck with your choice...I just love mine.
I just bought a Tab 3 10.1 from Amazon last week. I also purchased a leather case with Bluetooth keyboard to go with it. The order total was 311 for me and well worth it. I also have a Galaxy s4.
I think if you are looking to switch to the Android ecosystem I would recommend setting up a Google account now if you do not have one already. The one thing I like about Google and the android environment is the built in cloud environment.
I am on my 4th Android phone and first tablet and have never had to transfer or backup contacts, settings or files. I log into the new device it automatically downloads the settings wallpaper and apps I use. The contacts are stored in the Google account on Google servers. I have seen even the most experienced iDevice users try to mimic this seamless integration but fall short (though not impossible).
My only advice in order to make sure you never have to back up files and pictures (with caution) is to utilize Google drive if you do not already.
When I first moved to Android from Blackberry the selling point was that my contacts are stored in my Google account. Saved my life many times.

Well guys, I went to BestBuy to check out the tablets.
I looked at the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1, Note 8.0 and 10.1 and the Nexus 7.
The two tabs seemed a bit sluggish when getting in and out of apps, and the load times in chrome were a little slower compared to the Notes.
The Note 10.1 is the perfect device for me, I absolutely loved it, but it's way out of my price range. But I also loved the Note 8.0.
The Nexus 7 seemed nice too, but it was in some demo mode so I couldn't actually open apps and such.
How does the Note 8.0 compare to the Nexus 7? At this point I think I like the Note 8.0 more, purely based on form factor.
Edit: How much faster is the Note 8.0 than the Tab 3?
Also how does the Note 8.0 compare to the original Note 10.1?
As far as I am concerned NO MORE SAMSUNG. Samsung just doesn't support…update the system on any of their tabs. I am selling my Galaxy 10.1 note today and getting something else. Sold my S4 and got a nexus 5 and am very happy.

Well that is interesting.
If you had to recommend me a tablet, what would you recommend? Other than the Nexus 7.
I'd Recommend the LG Gpad 8.3 Google Play Edition as it has a slightly bigger screen.
I do NOT recommend Samsung devices as they have a CRAP LOAD of bloatware installed. Quite a few of those things run constantly using up RAM/CPU and eating battery life and in return, they give nothing.
I'd rather have an AOSP based ROM without the 'goodies' than a stock ROM with them.
I've owned 4 samsung devices so I think I can speak for them
This is my skightly skewed opinion. you should decide what you buy. We are just giving you advice
MY advice would be to purchase a google play edition device/ Nexus device as I find them the best in terms of everything

Well maybe I should just get the Nexus 7.
I can't seem to find a Google Play G Pad in my price range :/
Did you get the Nexus 7? I was going to until I found that some of the 2013 model had screen/hardware and touchscreen issues. My wife has the gtab 2 10.1 which I put cm 4.3 and a custom overclocked kernal on and it runs smooth and quick. After using it a while I wanted something a bit smaller for myself and settled on the gtab 3 8.0. I like the size much better and the screen is plenty big and bright. It is quick and responsive with the stock rom. There is some development happening for it including an overclocked kernal and I am waiting patiently for a stable rom.
If you bought the Nexus, let us know how it is. I hope it's one of the good ones.
With all the screen issues, I'm very hesitant to buy a Nexus 7. Actually, I'd buy two; one for my wife and one for me. But, there seems to be no fix in sight for the all the screen issues. I'd rather have an 8 inch screen than a 7 inch screen, but I have no idea whether Google will produce a Nexus 8 in the next six months or so. And, Dell has their Venue 8 available for sale. It's screen resolution may not be as good as the Nexus, and it uses a dual core instead of a quad-core CPU. But, for web surfing, email, watching videos, it seems to do pretty well.
Wondering what forum members thoughts are. Will probably wait a little while and see if there are any negative reports on the Dell in the next few weeks. (All existing buyer reviews are pretty positive.)
Why do you need 8 inch? You should either buy 7 inch or 10+inch if you ask me, anything more than 7 inch is NOT portable, if you want a multimedia device to use at home don't buy 7 inch tablet. I don't have any screen issues, i think you should give more thought on what you need.
I have no idea why so many people think Google is going to make a nexus 8 when there is a nexus 7. They're not going to make a tablet from 5 to 10 just to satisfy every person who wants an obscure sized tablet. If Google ever makes 3rd nexus tablet choice it'll be larger than the 10 not in between 7 and 10.

It's a hit or miss. Why not go to your most trusted retailer and test a couple out then pick the best screen you can find.
I don't have any issues with my unit.
Not sure what "screen issues" OP is referring to. Been using mine everyday for little over a week with no probs.
Bought one at Sams' Club last night and the screen has no issues.

I can only guess that you don't know the physical size of the 8 inch is the same as the 7 inch, there's less screen border on the front.

I guess people think there will be Nexus 8 because of the pic released by Google a few months ago. It was quickly photoshop'd to a Nexus 7 after the roar on the net. Since Google actually took a picture of someone using what appeared to be a Nexus 8, a number of people, including me, expected Google to release a Nexus 8 sometime.

There's a nine page thread entitled Potential Touch Screen Fix. This forum is full of Nexus 7 2nd gen touch screen problems. It looks a hardware grounding issue. Some people are on their fourth and fifth units and still having the problems.
I'm glad your's has worked well for one week and another poster's has worked well for one day, but this seems to be a hit and miss issue. Plus, many people notice the problem after having had the unit a while.

That seems to be the only real option. At least buying locally means you won't have to mail the unit back if its defective. You only have to return it to the store.
Unless, you want the additional geography of an 8 inch screen. I guess waiting seems to be the best bet.

I have had 2 with screen issues. The first one was extremely bad. 3 spots that didn't register touches practically at all. And the second one had touch issues and rebooting when the tablet was in a case. I was very disappointed. I am going to get a hp slate 7 extreme that runs the tegra 4. I play games often and the tegra 4 beats the snapdragon in gaming. The 1 gig of ram is still fine for the hp since kitkat is going to be running on it. The screen resolution is lower than the 7 v2 but it's still better than 720hd. The 7 v2 was my first choice but I feel that I gave Nexus 2 chances with their product and they failed.
Certainly don't wish anyone difficulties with their 7. In fact, the more positive current sales turn out to be, the more likely Asus has fixed these issues during manufacturing.
My wife and I have had a pair of Nexus 4 phones for over a year, and both are performing flawlessly. I guess we're looking for the same kind of reliability with a 7-8 inch tablet.
I'd love for Google to come out with a Nexus 8, like in the "old" screen shot. And, seeing what happens in the next few weeks seems like the safe bet.
Neither of us is a gamer, so we don't need the speed gamers require.
Mine made in August 2013, totally fine.

The new Nexus 7 is my favorite device ever, and I use it hours a day even after months of having it. I'm actually glad I didn't get the LTE version because then it would never leave my side (tempting though, since TMobile offers free data for tablets).
From what I've seen on my Dell Venue 11, Windows 8 is nowhere near as easy to use or as useful as Android. It actually pisses me off sometimes, for well-known issues like battery drain and control panel. PM me if you want more thoughts on the Dell Venue.

Hi -- I've had my unit since October and I've had absolutely zero problems with it. :3 I bought it from Best Buy.
LG GPad 8.3, Google Play Edition.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Is these issue's still happening on the Nexii 7 2013? I want to buy one myself.
I got a Nexus 7 (2013) for Christmas, it was purchased from Best Buy. I already have an HTC One, and I have to say -- the Nexus 7 keeps up fine, despite inferior specs. And my HTC One feels so very small now. It only beats the Nexus 7 in sound. I was reluctant to open up my Nexus 7, I gave a lot of thought to returning it for the credit, but I'm glad I kept it now. Go get a Nexus 7!
And today's current rumor, from various component suppliers, is the Nexus 8 will be introduced this summer. (Background comments are that Google is disappointed in the sales of the current Nexus 7.)
Currently, the choices are Nexus 7 (2013) at $269 for 32 gb; LG G Pad 8.3 at $299 (street price) for 16gb but w/SDHC; or Dell Venue 8 at $179/$209 for 16/32 gb but w/SDHC. The Dell has less dense screen, but equal to the rest of the competition, and twin core CPU which is more than capable for videos.
I don't know how to "convert" std G Pad to Google Edition w/less bloatware and quicker OTA updates. If the OTA updates along from LG, and LG doesn't modify them, then the question becomes how much of delay in getting them from LG rather than from Google.
If either LG or Dell comes up with sweet deal, that might be the way to go. I'll have to keep my eyes open.
Hiya.
I'm thinking of selling my 6 months old Galaxy Note 8.0. As much as having really great specs for an Android tablet I feel its age, let down by a now mediocre screen resolution and ppi and a two-generation old OS.
My current choices are:
1. Nexus 7 - Not my best choice as it only has 7-inch screen and as someone coming from an 8-inch I feel its a sort "downgrade". Yes, specs are as good if not better than the Note 8.0 but its just small for me for viewing and gaming.
2. Asus Memo Pad 8 - Another choice with (I heard) good stereo speakers and that's all. Having only 1GB RAM (and all the rest of the specs almost identical to the Note) its not a strong candidate for me.
3. Acer B1-730 - Until know its not yet officially announced/released yet. Hearing of a 7.9" screen is encouraging. Discouraging to know it might just come out having a dual-core processor. If it has a quad-core, 2GB RAM then I might consider.
4. LG G-Pad 8.3. - My strongest candidate so far. Slates the Nexus 7 and Note 8.0 in terms of benchmarks, specs, battery capacity and screen size. My only issue is LG might not update the OS beyond 4.4.2; not into rooting so would prefer the real deal.
5. Lenovo Yoga 8 - A so-so strong candidate with very good specs but let down by the same screen resolution with the Note 8.0, 1GB RAM and an odd design. Like the very long battery life tho. Having a MediaTek processor might be bad choice in terms of gaming and app compatibility.
Any advice or comment please?
How about the xperia z2 tablet?

Well, I'm in a mix as well. I gave my Nexus 7 2013 to my mom (for a reasonable price xP). I did that because it had a touch screen issue which I found terribly annoying. Look up "nexus 7 2013 grounding issue". Right now, I'm trying to decide over the galaxy tab 8.4 or the xperia z2. The z2 has amazing specs but lacks a bit in display. The galaxy tab pro 8.4 is ideal for me but lacks in a 32gb variant. At this time, I'm just barely holding on and waiting for any news on a nexus 8. Rumors speculate htc is making the new one (I doubt it) but nexus rarely fails at pricing and good specs. Good luck and enjoy your tab when you buy it.

None of what you listed are any better. As for screen resolution, I can't justify ppi and costs for anything below 10 inches. By the time you get around setting up a new replacement, there should be 4.4.x released for the Note 8.0.
So far having SD that supports 128GB, 4.4.x, digitizer, and Samsung versatility, makes the competition seem limited.
GT-N5110 & GT-N5120 - 64GB 633x on board, Status Official on SafeRooted OEM ROMs with Wanam Xposed and RootCloak. The only way to fly 8+ hours!

the only device that i can think of is Tab Pro 8.4
others kind of crappy...
I have got both note 8 and nexus 7 as for the screen resolution its noticeable I have reduced the icon size on my note so they could look a bit sharp. Nexus 7 screen is far better and the difference is there for someone who wants to notice. But I still love my n8 more for some reason
Sent from my GT-N5120 using Tapatalk
The problem with a Nexus 7 tablet (I had one for the past two years) is quality control isnt exactly top-class as numerous reports of hardware problems like speakers, buttons and the screen have been very common. And i also think its not an accurate description of a 7-inch tab as the on-screen capacitive buttons on the bottom and the battery/time/sound icons on top are occupying the real estate of the screen. So, I think its not a "true" 7-inch lne.
I want to keep my Note 8 but its two generations of OS Late. The ppi is again as I said its OK but its ageing. Samsung seems to be not listening to its customers when it comes to demand of updating its devices in the past 2 years which in my opinion is worth of Android 4.4.2 update.
The Tab Pro 8.4 is simply overpriced. I wont even consider getting that but if its under £250 for the base model then maybe I will.
For me the closest fight is between the G-Pad 8.3 and the MediaPad X1. If a Nexus 8 has been announced now I could wait.
Or I could wait for the 2nd-gen Tesco Hudl.

As I understand it 4.4 will limit our use of our 128GB SD card.
Apps can't write to SD card.
This is like Google taking off like Apple and because they don't like SD cards we are punished.
What is going on??

1) I'm not rooted so I'm stuck.
2) more important is that Google is trying to control Android the way Apple controls IOS.

why not ask on a nexus 7 forum?
I'm kind of in the same situation, thinking about upgrading my Note 8. I've got a Note 3 for my phone, and I've been running the Note 3 ROM port (which is pretty awesome) for a while now, so... kind of redundant. I've liked my Note 8 a lot since the day I got it, but the Note 3 just destroys it performance-wise. I've been getting more into gaming lately, and there the difference is particularly noticeable. Additionally, I'm sure many are aware that many games simply devour the battery. Yesterday I think I went from fully charged down to the teens playing The Walking Dead (really cool game and totally ideal for a touch screen vs. PC version) for about an hour!
Also, I have to say that having 32 gigs of onboard storage is incredibly nice. I've got a ton of apps including several GB+ games on each device. On the Note 8 w/ 16 GB, I have 38(!) app data files moved to my extSdCard via FolderMount. On the Note 3 with 32 gigs, I have more apps installed overall, but with the exception of maybe a gig worth of apps to external storage (I'm still on 4.3, so for many apps in app info there's a "Move to SD" button), everything is straight-up installed on internal storage with a few gigs to spare.
I almost would prefer a Tab to a Note, because if I have an s-pen, I'm super reluctant to install non-TW ROMs, but right now I find the new Note 10.1 to be the most compelling device, mostly due to the 3 GB ram (and the 32 GB storage). I'd find the Tab Pro 8.4 much more compelling if only a 32 GB version was available. Anyways, I took a look at Swappa and it looks like there are new Note 10.1's for pretty reasonable prices. I just wish the Nexus 8 was more than vapor-ware at the moment, but I think I'll have to wait until some solid information emerges before making any final upgrade decisions (external SD port PLEASE!)
I'm after a new tablet and was thinking about getting a bay trail windows 8 tab such as the dell venue 8 pro but I don't think I need windows 8 on a tab, so was thinking android, I already have a nexus 5 and I use that ALOT to do most tasks on so figured a nexus 7 will be suitable and bigger screen etc.. Just bit worried about performance as the nexus 5 is clocked higher and it has the adreno 330.
Should I get it?

I think you should buy an 8 or 10 inch tab. 7 inches is bigger than the Nexus 5's display but you dont really get a true tablet feeling. The nexus 5 and 7 are identical in more ways than they are different. It will just be like using your nexus 5 on a bigger screen.
Then again it depends on the type of stuff you do on your tab. For me, i would love a 2nd gen Nexus 10
See I don't actually mind the idea of it being like the nexus 5 but bigger etc, I can pretty much get the tablet cost next to nothing too... Hmm decisions decisions

I've just bought a 2013 Nexus 7, in spite of knowing that a new tablet is due soon. My reasoning was that I liked the form factor of the current 7 inch models (variously, the new one is 8" or even 8.9", which strikes me as a bit bulky and likely heavier), I got a good price on the 32GB model (£169.99) and the new model will probably be much more expensive. 64 bit doesn't strike me as being terribly useful yet, though 3GB RAM would be nice to have.

Same here. I just bought the 32gb one on eBay for a good price and because the 7 inch fits in my purse whereas my previous 9" tablet was kind of a drag to lug around (oh what a difference a couple inches and a bunch of ounces make). But, I also only use mine for reading, note-taking, and checking my email. 64-bit may not seem useful now, but who knows what cool things people will come up with in the future? Buy a 2013 Nexus 7 if you like the form factor, if you have simple needs, and if you're at all cost conscious. Otherwise wait for the new ones.

You can get it in a bundle with a keyboard dock for the same $300
Hey, I am planning to buy an Android tablet. Nexus series is the best among Android devices - but I am looking for a 8 inch screen.. I read about Nexus 8. But it might take a while to come to India. I saw Dell Venue 8, it is perfect for my need, but it has no guarantee about future Android updates and its development is not very active. So any suggestion?

i have both a dell venue 8 pro and a nexus 7. they serve two very different needs. the dell is literally a desktop computer in your pocket. i can actually do work on it. the nexus 7 is good for consumption. there is no way i could replace the dell with the nexus. but i could replace the nexus with the dell.
fyi, i got my 32 gb dell for 199.99 and my 16gb nexus for 144.xx. both on great sales.

oh yes.. anyway so is Dell Venue 8 worth buying?
thing is, here in India, Nexus 7 32GB costs around Rs.21000 and Dell Venue 8 32GB costs around Rs.13000.
So I am skeptical about Venue's performance..

Nexus 8 didn't make an appearence at Google i/o today. Do you think it will come out soon or should I just get the Nexus 7? Are there any good sales going on buying the Nexus 7 (2013) in the US?

So thats 2 months more than usual, so $19.98 value. Not much of a deal
I have owned the Nexus 7 (2013) since early 2014. It's quite nice overall although occasionally the touchscreen becomes unresponsive. It's running stock Marshmallow which is pretty nice. The only shortcoming for me is the 7" screen. I'd like a slightly larger screen but something less than 9". Either an 8 or 8.4 seems about right. I will buy a used tablet and the current 8" S2 models are still more than I want to spend so I'm thinking either a Tab S or a Tab Pro. Leaning towards the S because it's running Lollipop. Just wondering if any 8.4" Tab S owners came from the Nexus 7 and if so, are you happy you made the switch. FWIW, I mainly use it for reading books, web-surfing and a few apps e.g., NYTimes, Flixster, XDA, Facebook, YouTube. I don't play any games. Thanks.
I had a Nexus 7 2012, then a Nexus 7 2013 before coming to the Tab S 8.4. I have had my Tab S since February of last year, and loved it...until the day before yesterday when it bricked. But that is a different story...=(
The Tab S is a great tablet, and was a huge upgrade over either of the Nexus. My only complaints were 1.) the camera is far inferior to the N7 2103's, and 2.) the stock lollipop was so bloated I couldn't stand it. So I rooted it early on, and ran the stock firmware, debloated via Titanium, for well over a year. A couple months ago I switched to AOSP 6.0 because I needed to have adoptable storage. Like any tablet, it is sometimes laggy, etc. But overall the performance, for me, was top notch. I don't play games on my tablet, tho. It is mostly utilitarian for me, websites and spreadsheets, etc. for work, and watching movies and such at home.
I hope this helps.

Op, I am curious if you have considered the Nvidia Shield K1 tablet? In USA, the new one is now priced at 200USD. According to a lot of reviews and benchmarks, the K1 has faster internal hardware than either Tab S1 or S2, although its screen colors may be less accurate than those of both Samsung tablets.

Btw, I found your comment "Like any tablet, it is sometimes laggy" very interesting. I have noticed this both on my Nook HD (whether it was running CM11 or CM13) and to a lesser extent, on my Nexus 7 (currently on Marshmallow.) I'm not sure why that is. Sometimes when the Nook first wakes up from sleep, it is sluggish for several minutes until it "warms up." Not sure if this is due to hardware or software or both. FWIW, I never notice that kind of behavior on my Moto X phone.
I had the Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and the Tab Pro 8.4 before I got the S 8.4. The AMOLED screen on the S 8.4 is the best feature, so skip the Pro 8.4. Since you're used to AOSP (Nexus 7 and Moto X) you'll probably hate Touchwiz, but that's easily remedied with custom AOSP ROMS on the S 8.4. I love the S 8.4 and I don't plan on upgrading for a while. I don't play games on my phones/tablets either.
Here's a comparison the S 8.4 vs Nexus 7 2013

Good info on the Tab Pro vs S. Had been looking at the Pro mainly because they are cheaper, being a little older. Since it will be mainly a reader, websurfer and YouTube video watcher, the older screen may not be a big issue for me. I just bought a Tab S 10.5 for my wife to replace her Nook HD+. I should have it on Saturday so I'll play with it some and see how Touchwiz is. You're right, I'm not a fan of the manufacturers' overlays in general. When it comes to Android, less is more, imo. I'm not averse to flashing a new ROM as long as it's pretty stable. I have only used CM on the Nooks.

I forgot the Tab S has 3 GB of RAM versus 2 on the Tab Pro.
Yes. I've made a spreadsheet comparing specs. The RAM and the screen appear to be the main differences, other than the Android versions.

Samsung is supposed to announce the availability of the Tab S3 some time soon which means that the prices on the Tab S2 (even brand new one), should start coming down any moment now. That's just my theory.

I'm in no hurry so I will just wait until the S3 is released. I would actually prefer the 8" to the 8.4" screen anyway so if S2 prices do come down, that would be good.

I've always attributed that to background processes that sometimes wake up while you're using the device. Every "computer-type" device I've owned in the last 30+ years has had some level of lag at times. The only way to eliminate that would be to eliminate multitasking, and who wants that? I did find, after a year or so of heavy use that the lag was getting to be pretty bad, and I realized that I was always running critical on internal storage. I have the 32gb model, and I initially had a 32gb sd card, so I had plenty of storage, but the cache would almost instantaneously take up more than 1gb with all the apps I have installed. So that's why I switched to the AOSP 6.0 ROM, and I upgraded to a 128gb sd card, and adopted it all as internal storage. It hasn't eliminated the lag, but it hasn't been nearly as bad. If you look at some of my previous posts, you can see some of my history with that, if you like.
I'm also happy to say that my tab s miraculously uh-bricked itself today. Minutes ago, in fact. I am one super-happy camper at the moment.
Thanks for the thanks!

I have not heard of this. Is this an Android feature or a feature added to a custom ROM?
It's a feature of Android 6, but you will need a custom ROM to enable it as it is expected that the Samsung stock 6.0 ROM will have it disabled. Just search for "adoptable storage."
