[Q] Upgraded from Android 4.1.2 to 4.3 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, due to various strange issues, I decided to hit the upgrade button. After two major upgrades, my Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7105 ended up Android version 4.3 , baseband version: N7105ZHEMK3, Kernel 3.0.31-2139143, Build number: JSS15J.N7105ZHUEMK3.
My first impression is that the UI became ugly. The icons seem to be crowded and the used-to-be beautiful blue became ugly blue. I cannot explain but the UI seems to be ugly. Know what is happening? Is it because of the way 4.3 looks?

[Q] The most RAM saving ROM

Greetings,
I've been around for some time, lurking mostly. And installing a ROM with ICS or JB on my Galaxy W was a wonderful way to innovate. It feels like I'm using a brand new phone, which is awesome.
I have tried Cyanogen mod and Paranoid Android and even the PAC roms. But the issue I run while using them is that my ram seems to be full most of the time, and it's filled with system apps more than my own apps. Which limits the phone seriously. I am almost unable to use Swiftkey for typing online or even messages, since it lags too much the phone.
I plan on keeping a couple of apps like a battery saver, Aviate launcher and occasionally a traffic monitor app like 3g Watchdog.I've been thinking about going back to Gingerbread versions, although new ones seem more enticing with features/apps like Google now.
I'm breaking my question in two parts:
1 - Can a more advanced android version like JB (or maybe KK) help make the system faster and the ram management more efficient? Or should I stick with a rom similar to stock?
2 - What roms do you recommend? Which Kernel? Or should I just face the fact my phone won't be able to comply with my current needs and I should ask Santa for an iPhone?
thanks

Thank you, I'll give it a try on the stable version.
For future reference, and to save the trouble for other people who may come here and need to search the thread:

Thank you very much.
PS: in the mean time I'm open to more suggestions, just in case.
U should also give a try to monster build rev16. Im using it as daily build and its really light weight.

The rom crashes the settings applet everytime I try to change language to Portuguese.
Can't add widgets with aviate launcher (settings crashes)
otherwise seems alright.

Still on 4.1.2

Anyone else still this far back? I'm on Eclipse 412. I want to upgrade, but I've never found a rom that works as well. Tried some of the 4.2 and 4.4 but haven't found a good one yet. Didn't try any 4.3 for some reason. I just keep going back to 412, but Google services don't work on it and I'm sick of seeing that pop up on some apps. Though I'm wondering if maybe that's a good thing since I hear a lot abt Google services killing battery and stuff.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Free mobile app
eclipse 4.1.2 was one of the best setups I've ever ran on this device. I've considered going back to it recently even, not sure what you mean about Google play services not working on it?
Google now doesn't work for example. I'll get a message saying "Google services cannot run on this device"

Must be only that ROM related issue.
Everything works fine with the PA 4.1.2 ROM I've still been running for 18+ months, but I did have some temporary Google issues from using a black theme, uninstalled theme and it was back to normal.
Test it out here:

time to upgrade to 4.3/4.4. they're better than 4.1.2 for sure. 4.3 is more fluid for sure. Try the stock 4.3 rom or purity 4.3 + franco. you won't be disappointed.

BETTER in what way exactly?
Cause I've tested all the 4.2/4.3/4.4 ROM's and nothing seems to work any BETTER than 4.1.2 for my needs, which for me is too have as many possible controls/functions available from touching the lower half of the screen, w/out having to sacrifice any screen space for status/navi bars and while holding it w/1 hand only using thumb, be it for any quick settings or launching/switching/closing apps or typing or turning the screen on/off/unlocked.
Extended desktop in 240dpi tablet mode helps too.

im on resurrection remix (4.4.2) and it is so much smoother and faster than the 4.3 and older ROMs ive tried (PA and PACMAN). I heard LiquidSmooth is also great so I consider upgrading to that at some point and switch to F2FS while im at it
Plenty of roms have the option to customize that nav and status bar (including hiding it for slide in) as well as app launchers and various other features. I recommend checking out reviews of popular roms on youtube or something, to check what the are capable of and then decide on which one to pick!

Skip 4.3 if you can, it is horribly slow and heavy. at least go to 4.2.2 or 4.4 would even be better in term of overall performance and device usability.

i found 4.2.2 rom sluggish. i didn't experience the memory leak bug on 4.3. even the stock launcher on 4.2.2 was little laggy
Just stick with 4.1.2 if that works best for you. 4.2 is very laggy and 4.3 and 4.4 are so-so(not as smooth as 4.1.2).

Feedly on Android 5.0 very laggy

Does anyone here use Feedly on their G3 with the stock 5.0? If so; have you noticed that Feedly is very laggy and when you transition from articles back to the main page the app is flickering? I am not sure if this is happening on the stock rom. I am using Cloudy G3 2.1 and having this issue. I have a nexus 5 with the stock rom and it is not having this issue.

Hi man i also noticed bad gpu performance, especially in hybrid html apps....i hope there will be a fix
I'm on an older 1st gen Kindle Fire, I also notice significant lag on CM 12 vs CM 11.
(Sorry not trying to hijack the thread but wanted to report this on another device)

Strange that the issue is only on G3 and not the N5. It must be something to do with the LG rom and maybe not with the feedly application, although, I did see in the reviews comments that they were working on better ART support. It's possible that this issue is cause by a number of factors...
yeah im feedly every hour user but so laggy on my lollipop stock
I checked also with a nexus 7 and saw the same performance.....maybe its something with the built in webview of lollipop...
ok, i am almost sure the problem comes from the fact that android lollipop currently has its internal webview working on chromium 37. currently there is version 40 already out, and when checking hybrid apps with the chrome beta browser, which has this version of chromium, things look amazing.
I hope they update it in the really near future!
Do we have any news on the issue, people ?

Just installed 4.0.1 and WOW

Just installed the first version of stock found meaning 4.0.1 ITL41D. The colors and refresh rate is weird but the speed, man the speed.... This was why I bought Galaxy Nexus in the first place. The pictures are taken instantly...anyone else tested this?
I am curios to see how will it behave in a few days and will report back. Seems like 4.3 was making it run really slow....
My only complain is that I don't know how to get rid of the OTA sytem update.

i'm on sprint, always found 4.1.2 to be the best one for lte/wifi and battery life...but that OTA drives me nuts! i've tried all the tricks of deleting/moving files around to stop it, but it never seems to go away.
any luck hopefully pass it on this thread
isn't there just a system app with OTA in its name that you can delete, or rename to .bak?
I've considered going WAY BACK as well in versions, I mean this device WAS RELEASED to basically "showcase" ICS, so it makes sense ICS runs great on it. I think I would prefer going back to eclipse build 6 from its 4.1.2 based days, man it had the PERFECT amount of features and was flawless when it comes to bugs, its speed was phenomenal as well. (I believe it was eclipse v2 maybe v3, build 6.) I'm just itching for a nexus 6 though too, to taste that lollipop and be on some new hardware finally. I've put my GNEX thru the wringer, and its showing in how it behaves LOL
Still love using PA ROM 4.1.2 since Nov 2012.

thanks
My gnex did a self wipe a few months ago. It worried me so I finally bough a one plus one.
Within a few weeks my screen starting acting up so much I had to request an RMA. Took the pics of the OPO with my gnex. Screen responsiveness is better on the nexus....feedback is better.... I really miss it Blackbean 4.1.2 with AK kernel of some kind. Great combo

How to update to TouchWIz 6.0

Hi all,
I would like to know, if it's possible to do it, how to update from TouchWiz 5.0 to TouchWiz 6.0 on Galaxy Tab S 10.5 (wifi). I have the Galaxy S7 phone (with TouchWiz 6.0) and prefer that version of TouchWiz to the one I have on my tablet.
I tought that updating my tablet to Marshmallow would automatically put me on TouchWiz 6.0, like on my S7, but that didn't happen. As a side note, I updated to marshmallow manually since I didn't get the Marshmallow update on my tablet yet.
Thank a lots,
Blaccko
Hi again,
So I realized that I have TouchWiz 6.0 on my tablet now. However, I thought that with the same version of Android and TouchWiz, two different devices from Samsung would have the same interface look. Apparently, I'm wrong. How come my S7 and my Tab S have different interfaces (drop down menu is gray on S7 and withe and blue on Tab S for instance)?
Is it possible to get on my Tab S the same interface than the one on my S7?
Thanks again,
Blaccko
Yep, I know what you mean about the blue grey colours. This is actually quite standard practice for Samsung - when they update older devices to newer major Android versions, they don't also "update" the TouchWiz user interface. e.g. The S5 running MM looked pretty much the same as it did on LP. It's the same thing with the Tab S.
Of course, the important thing is that Samsung have done the hard work of getting the various drivers updated from manufacturers, so at the least things are stable. There will definitely be custom ROMs (soon!) that will port the latest UI features over from the latest devices like the S7 and Tab S2
Thansk for your answer!
Where are good places to look for ROMs? Also, what do I need to look for when choosing a ROM (I've never used one before)?
Thanks,
Blaccko
Look in the Android Development section for this device (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/development) - IronRom seems popular.
Thanks.
