4.3 Battery drain caused by.... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello guys im not a dev nir anything close but I know a few things. Anyways one thing that was driving me crazy was the insane battery drop between 4.2.2 and 4.3 I was reading and doing some test and I came to one conclusion...
So most of the noticeable change is that the screen is using way more battery in 4.3 than 4.2.2! So I did some research and samsung made some updates to the screen drivers I believe to make the colors look better, more vibrant etc. In my opinion this has to be the cause of the screen sucking up so much battery. But that wasnt enough for me. I had to do some testing. One day I used my phone normallly with white background and colorful icons etc. The next day I used a black background with less vibrant icons. And WOW the battery icon changed dramatically! YESS I know our screen uses less battery in amoled screen. But it qas never fhis big of a difference between a black and white background. Again this are just my thoughts and opinions. Thanks ? Have a great day.

I'm no dev, either, but I recently posted this:

I really go with black because I like the way it looks, but I also figured it could possibly help battery life. Nice to hear some real-world usage back the idea up.

New GN owner feedback.

Hello all,
First off thanks to everyone in the community for all of the great articles and information. I struggled with which device to get but settled on the GN. When it arrived I kind of paniced because it wouldn't update from 4.0.1. Thanks to all of you I ended up finding out that I received a YAKJUDV version. With a little research I found out how to change to YAKJU and now all is well.
Not only is "all well" but "all is great"! I am running straight stock 4.0.4, no root, no custom kernel, nada. I do not have any issues with wake from sleep as some have reported, and my battery life is fantastic. As of right now I am on 1 Day 16 Hours and I still have 36% battery remaining. I know that battery life is very subjective but I have browsed some websites, downloaded 10-15 apps. Played a little angry birds. Connected to my job's Cisco VPN and did some RDP work. I have 3 Gmail accounts set to push with calendar & contact sync. I have had Wifi and Bluetooth enabled the whole time. I also have my google voice and google plus account active. I keep the screen on auto brightness. Lastly, I have about an hour or so of talk time during this period. Ohh, I forgot I also have had the Jawbone Companion app installed and connected to my Era, I read a few comments on some sites where users reported the app caused noticeable battery drain, this was not my experience.
In closing, thanks again for all of the info!
Greate battery life
nice....
that sounds like incredible battery life. what was the screen on time? i take it on WiFi the entire time?
either way, its refreshing to hear/see a thread praising this phone.. i am in the same boat as you, i am completely happy with my nexus...absolutely love it. however i had to root/ROM to get to this point but still very happy (i was going to root/ROM anyway)
For me crap battery life at 4.0.1 (and probably battery wasn't calibrated). Once updated to yakju 4.0.4 battery life was much much better. Other than the "screen at low brightness look crap issue" and not too loud speaker (Nokia phones which I came from was DAMN loud), overall very happy with this phone. The ROMs and kernels for most of the cases JUST WORK. And the fact people ask me what phone am I holding is an epic thing when you see people around you having iPhones and S2. May send mine in for a replacement as the top part of the screen has this weird greenish colour. Noticeable when keyboard is in landscape.

holy ****...how did you get a 1 day and 16 hours with a 4 hours 2 min.......
im getting the 4 hours screen time but with a day (24 hours)........
lol i wish i could tell you.......
I am not running any widgets, most of my browsing was done over wifi.
I ordered a GNex about 2 weeks ago and used it for about 36 hours and returned it. That one had abysmal battery life. In hind sight, I wish I would have looked closer at the firmware/version type with that one so I would have some sort of reference.
I am kind of pissed that I ordered the extended battery thinking my battery life was going to be ****. I honestly dont think i need it.

When you use the charger does a green light come up to tell you that the battery is charging?

LOL, i don't know! I am still trying to drain the battery for the first time, I dont want to plug it in yet!
I'll check next time i charge it.
did you put it in the charger for short periods of time? if it doesn't get a full charge at once it doesn't reset the timer. you can tell when you are looking at the battery option and the map goes down back up then down again lol... I'm honestly thinking that's the case

Battery Issue ! Its the 7th Charge Cycle Now

I bought this amazing [As you all know how fast it is ] Galaxy Nexus and was previously using hTC Desire S[GB] !!!
I'm somehow not happy with the battery life and also the overheating of Nexus !
It is Stock[ROM + Kernel] + Root ! around 7th or 8th charge cycle !!
I did try out Cpu Sleeper App works like a charm but was facing reboot issue and that is why had to remove it !!!
See if anyone of you could help me overcome these issue ! or Is this really something for me to worry about !!?????
[PS: Please don't recommend me to change ROM or KERNEL ! Because I prefer to stay on Stock ! Also NOOO Overclockig !]
Check out the Few screen shots i took when my brain kicked me to !!!
We need to see the screen before this one(the one that lists top consumers of battery). To see if something is waking the phone up. Also, charge cycles and calibration are bogus. If anything, you would be using the phone less since you've finally set everything up the way you want and the newness effect has worn off. My battery life has been about the same if my usage pattern remains like it usually does throughout the day. It doesn't really look too bad, but the drops seem a little steeper than what I normally see. . Grab CPUSpy and BetterBatterystats. I'm on my way to work soon, but someone may be able to help you before I go on break.

Here we go
ok so calibrators and cycles are bogus ! I get that !
What about brightness ? Should that be auto or manual mode ??
And is Google Now causing issue ?? Because its not really useful to me on daily basis !!???
And any other suggestions your would like to share
I was gonna edit my post, actually. I've personally never fully charged and drained my battery for any of my phones(some people swear by it though). I guess if the readings are out of whack then yes. My phone got stuck at 85% for almost 12 hours one day, but I had did something which messed up the OS. Haha.
If you don't use Google Now, you can opt out of it. Brightness is a personal preference. I usually stick mine at 25%. Auto may take a hit on the battery, but I doubt it's anything to worry about. Just the common sense stuff. Apps that poll data in the background will drain the battery, but if they're properly coded, they shouldn't be a problem Running on 4G/LTE/HSPA with a bad signal will drain it more since the radio is trying to find the best possible signal. After a full day of use, what is your typical screen on time? 18 hours is pretty good if you're using it on HSPA all day.
ya honestly that doesnt appear to have anything wrong. What results were you expecting vs what you have? You have a lot of screen on time, that takes a LOT of battery to run the display and using it when brightness is high takes significantly more. Also it appears you have a couple long phone calls in there as well. As far as heat goes, youre going to have that on the higher end phones due to the gpu producing heat and oled displays produce a bit of heat as well, lcd runs cooler.
Weak/unstable/unrealible mobile network signal could cause the fast drain of your battery. I saw you have one bar of hspa signal in the 3rd screenshot.
Those graphs should be much flatter during idle periods. Something is keeping awake. If you're on jelly bean its prob Google now. It does it to everybody.

Actually 3G isn't really well established for Vodafone[or any other company] in India. Also there is a peak going upwards in the first image indicating charging and after having a battery life of around 20 hrs on My Desire S and screen on [appx.] 7 hrs , I'm very disappointed with Jelly Bean !! Also While googling this issue I found out that somebody sniffed the mobile wifi connection to monitor and found some app constantly exchanging packets which according to his test was the root issue for the battery drain !!
Edit:
]Ok I found the way to shut google Now !
I'll records stats for a day or two and get back Thanks Everyone for your time and help

In Google Now >> Menu >> Settings >> Google Now there is an on/off switch at the top. Depending on the ROM it's included as either velvet.apk or QuickSearchBox.apk but removing that would get rid of Google search I think.
Yeah. I think its actually part of search. Like I said, just opt out and you should be good to go. Keep us posted.

very GOOD tutorial for HTC ONE X BATTERY

I recommend you this tutorial because ...it works very good and with NOVA our phone is much smoother..
try it an leave a review here !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ0GpvmPm7A&feature=related
I must say, the video is really nice: it's good made, with pleasant speaker and, the best, it delivers really nice tips.
I was always interested, if nova or apex would consume less energy but no one made those test...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
sense uses more battery because the 3d cube animation..but with NOVA u can use simple but very pleasant for eyes the TABLET animation
I think this video might be applicable to the 1.xx roms but since the 2.xx series battery life is terrific, I can get 2+ days on mostly stock settings anyway heelsandtech is/ nice to watch for other reasons...
nice info, useless in most cases but nice to know.
in the end who bought the one-X to keep everything disabled and use a black wallpaper. that's why we've got a companion core and why juice defended exists.
expected it to cover more things to prevent.
app's that stop deep sleep.
situational awareness and such.
wile at work i'm not allowed to take my phone to my workplace so i leave it in a locker, wile in the locker it has no reception but frantically searching for some keeping it out of deep sleep and actively using the CPU draining up to 40% in 2 hours time. enabling airplane mode stops the phone from looking for reception and restores it's normal drain. information like that could be handy to some more so then use a black wallpaper and turn off everything u don't need that very second.
not all things that she says are OK (like the black wallpaper)
but some of them are VERY good to know ..disabling the 3g saves alot of battery.
In fact, she didn`t said, you should use a black wallpaper. She just mentioned, that it consumpts less battery.
The best in this video is, that she reviewed two times what she said, and gave tips to optimise battery. The tutorial is great for begginers, if it would pinned here in forum, 30% of threads wouldn`t be created ("omfg, my battery dies quickly, heeeeeelp")
I don`t really think, sense drains more just because of 3d animation, but because of screwed up code (how you can explain, that app drawer lagged on ics all the time on 4-core beast?). On jb, rosie became fast, but i can imagine, there are still many sh*t inside the code, so it drains more battery. The problem is, sense was ported over 5 times already, it is just time to write it from scratch, lighter and fresher, it would make it more competetive.
I`ll check tommorow in field conditions, how it will perfom with nova prime...
One more statement about the vid: as she mentioned, the video is not only for One x, but for all Android (especially for htcs). after 2.17 update, HOX does perfom well in terms of battery in comparisment to other Androids, but all of them sux hard (except of motorazr maxx and sgNote, but only because of monster battery size). iPhone blows away every android phone in battery life by two times (i could compare iPhone4 with motorola atrix and sgs2 with 4s).
So, all in all, the video is the best among anything I`ve seen before. I barly give props to such videos, but this time I do

Black wallpapers only consume less energy on AMOLED/OLED panels. LCD screens use a backlight that is the same intensity regardless of wallpaper colour.

It's not due black or white, it's due to simplicity : cpu needs more power calculating a 1mb picture as a wallpaper, than black wallpaper.
Also, you cannot say this, if you didn't tested it. The lcd3 Technology (in fact it's upgraded ips texhnology) is to complicated go say for sure

My experience with the HTC One

I am fortunate enough to have the phones I want. I have an S4, HTC One among others.
Been using the S4 since it came out on Verizon and decided to give the HTC One a try. I always liked HTC.
So far I really like the phone, love the HTC keyboard, love the display and camera. I am also very surprised by how much I like beats, either speaker or Bluetooth. I also like the simplicity of sense when compared to touchwiz. As a Google music user, I love the lock screen controls, it matches the whole look of the phone and I wish I had something like this on the S4.
I really don't care about the materials used to make the phone but I do have to say, the One looks amazing. The more I look at it, the more I like, however, the S4 feels better in the hands, has a more comfortable grip.
I really don't like BlinkFeed and I miss sense's weather widget on 3rd party launchers. Dislike not having a brightness slider in the notification bar, hate not changing my battery.
I really miss some features of the S4 wish the S4 had some features available on the One.
By far, the best HTC phone I ever used but I don't think this phone is better or worse than the S4.

Some stuff that bothers me, based on my usage.
Battery life isn't as good as the S4, I expected this however because I knew this phone had a smaller battery. But I feel the drop in battery life is worse than I expected. What makes this more annoying is the fact that charging this device TAKES FOREVER. If I am using it as a GPS device, whether it be Waze or Google maps. I can't even get it to charge. It will either hold it's charge or loose some. This is with a 2amp car charger.
Other than that, I love the slightly smaller screen. 4.7" is a good stopping point. haha. And the speakers on this thing, wow. It's not insanely louder than my S4, but the clarity is insane for a phone. Love it.
Display is superior than that of the S4 as well. I don't know that I will want AMOLED screens anymore.
Sense trumps Touchwiz, I think we all knew that. I almost want to say I prefer this look than Stock AOSP.
Now if only I could get root, so I can remove the Verizon bloat.

I am kinda surprised at all the comments about this having bad battery life. I got 6 hours of screen on time (100% wifi with 20% brightness) a couple days ago: http://i44.tinypic.com/24b7vw1.png
Yesterday, I got down to about 50% (100% LTE with 20% brightness) with nearly 3 hours of screen on time. The phone was unplugged at 8am and plugged in around 10pm at 50%. My previous phone (Droid Bionic) would be LUCKY to receive 3 hours of screen on time on a single charge whether it be on wifi, 3G, or LTE.
Today, I am currently at 60% (100% LTE with 20% brightness) with 2.15 hours screen on time and the phone has been unplugged since 8am.:http://i43.tinypic.com/x1f37n.png
Seems pretty good to me!
I am not sure what the deal is with the battery hate either.
I go all day and still have ~30% to spare at bed time.
Nothing compares to the HTC Rezound I guess.
I get amazing battery life as well.
Also, I totally disagree that the S4 feels better in the hand. To me, the One is just... Awesome. The feel of the metal vs the cheap plastic feel of the S4. Blah.
Good post though. Always nice to hear others opinions.

Oh man. That fantastic cool sensation you receive when you pick up your HTC One in the morning is just amazing, right?
Having both the S4 and the HTC one, the HTC just blows the S4 away IMHO.
I love it.
The feel, the build quality, and HTC Sense.
I also feel the S4 will never get boot loader unlock while the htc one has a much greater chance of getting unlock and hopefully even S-OFF.
I also personally feel that the htc one feel WAY better in hand than the s4.
I do feel like I can toss my S4 around though and not worry while I don't feel the same with the htc one, I may have to actually get a case
i find the battery to be good, it comes off the charger at 5:30 in the morning and i normally have around 20% left when i go to bed around 11. But i'm used to the galaxy nexus which couldn't last half a day.
I have been swapping between the One and S4 since Thursday...the S4 trumps the One in in screen size...I definitely prefer 5 over 4.7 in most situations but not all haha...expandable memory and removable battery are nice to have but non-factors to me...I'm rooted and been on a custom ROM since day 1, so u have never experienced the supposed "lag" from the stock software...also I never accepted the OTA, so I can flash all I want
The one is like a jewel though. I never used cases on any my phones, but as soon as I held the One in the store, a case was an instant cop. Speakers on the One are amazing, the clarity is ridiculous. Battery life is OK, I have about 65% on my S4 after work compared to 50% on my One. The build of the one is nice, but is a non-factor to me...
I like both phones though, I feel bad leaving my S4 at home when I use my One for the day and vice versa...

haha I feel the same way, never use a case, but the htc one I just feel I might have to. not sure yet, need more time with it.
I feel bad even leaving my s3 behind, that phone is still killer haha.
S4 will never get unlocked, but at least the htc one I have faith, I will be selling s4 after 6 month period of no boot loader unlock, i give it 6 months then move on.
I guess we can add "battery life" to the common issues of death and taxes Reality is comparing each other's battery life has too many variables to compare, so seems surprising folks keep attempting it. Huge weighted factors combined equals no practical way to compare except your own use with a previous device.
Network area strength in relation to where using the device
Apps used and duration
Data radios on in weak area when not being used
Social apps and any background updating
Display brightness
Streaming cloud data (big battery drain compared to local content)
What other radios being used or on at time
Animations in UI
Wallpapers (live ones are not battery friendly)
Seriously, how on earth can anyone compare within 50% and be accurate (at even 50%)? Answer is only if a fluke will you be anywhere close to relative.
Sorry, double post. Having issues with xda app running like puke.

I absolutely love the speakers. I have a phone mount on my bike and it was okay with my old Dinc (it has some felt pads so there's about a quarter inch of space to bounce the sound back and amplify it a bit) but not only do those front speakers sound perfect me but I get turned heads from pedestrians
Even goofier, I put it in the sink while I'm showering in the morning, and can even hear the bass that way.
As for battery life, went out riding this morning to take pictures at a parade, was still at 80% when I got home. As a medical student I'm almost always at home or at school or in the hospital, thus always on wifi, so this thing is great. Looking at the battery graph the only rapid drops come when the 4G signal is weak.

New to Andorid & G3, first few days, weak battery than expected

Hey guys,
So I just moved from iPhone finally, first few days with the G3 and I'm wowed of course, my only concern is that I expected the battery to be a lot better, of course it's better than the iPhone, but I did not expect it to drain so fast, first few % goes slow but then it drops fast, and I'm not doing anything special or massive use, brightness set to auto, and it's trickle charged, I dropped to like 20% after 2:20 hours of screen use.
So my question, is that what I can expect from the G3 because of the massive resolution? or it's just on the beginning?
Would love to hear from your experience! any tips would be cool!
Thanks!
Its because of the qhd screen, better screen, more battery drain, if u root u can adjust a few things to help a little, mine isent to bad
My first 10 percent drop I can get almost a hour of screen time, barely 2 1/2 at 50%. Thinking of returning this for the M8..

This is true, but because you're a new user, I'd highly recommend not rooting for a while, until you've worked out the kinks in your phone. You can set the brightness to a certain percentage, and then auto-brightness uses that percentage as a base and will not let the screen go lower than that level. As for apps that can help you out, I use and highly recommend this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antutu.powersaver
You can select 3 different levels of saving, and I seem to get around 20% more battery life when use it. Or you can look for anything else along those lines. LG also has some built-in tools to help keep your battery going. There's the built-in battery saver option: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-use-battery-saver-lg-g3
There's also a few other things, this site covers it pretty well: http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-g3-help-tips-and-tricks
Anyways, hope that helps, and welcome to the family!
Hey thanks for the help guys!
I will definitely try some of the suggestions, and also considering to root it.
Does it get better with time tho? I mean this is just my 3rd of 4th cycle.
Thanks again guys!

Yes, usually takes a few circles to the battery to settle down. Mine at the beginning was draining fast too but now I'm getting almost 5 hours of screen on time. That's pretty good in my opinion. I use my phone a lot and by the end of the day I'm over 30%. My gs4 was over way before that.

My battery was terrible the first week. It's gotten much better since. So it will calm down after a bit.
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app
My battery was horrible the first week on my g2 but seems better on the g3, I don't think it will get better than this and if it does that's awesome!
I also feel like it doesn't use as much battery when screen on as my g2 did.
