Install an unofficial ROM or just root - Ouya Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I would like to install sideload apps on Ouya. I was reading the forum and I see that I can either to install an unofficial (I always do that for my Android phone) or to root Ouya and install Google Play Store. I am not sure what to do.
What do you suggest?
Thanks

Right now, you're better off just rooting the stock ROM. That may change whenever Stockplus gets updated.

I'm seriously considering backing up to stockplus. I don't really care about the ouya launcher or store. I am getting pretty sick of some Play apps immediately force-quitting (not sure if stockplus will fix this, but it's sure worth a try)
otherwise my next step is simply going to be CM10...

You could try go to Settings -> Developer options and check "Don't keep activities".
that worked for me

Rooting the stock FTW. There is even an apk created by an XDA dev that can root the Ouya without a PC. Makes it much easier when they update it and you lose root again

thanks cabrerachaparro - a while ago you or one of the other helpful denizens had mentioned that too. I unchecked that setting some time ago but sadly it doesn't help.
things like google voice or linphone or mx player or latest es file explorer, start and look to be running just fine, but then quit. (and usually the error is related to google framework service). other things like gmail, es task manager, nova launcher, connectbot, terminal, all work fine.
the funny thing is, it's not restricted to applications installed from the play store - e.g. I can install linphone from either f-droid or from the play store, and both f-quit.
I have been too lazy to check things out with catlog (which runs just fine lol)

Oops...then maybe I should stay on StockPlus for a while, as I seldom get any crashes and I get all the Media apps I need (Youtube, Netflix, XBMC).
Guess I need to sit tight if I want a quiet Christmas break

how to install android market?

i rooted,and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351283 i used vending 3.3.12,...i succes market installed..
but, every times running on message show `add on account on market`then disappear .. how download apk???
Since you're going through the trouble of trying to install the market manually (and the lack of specificity), I can only assume you're running the stock Amazon software. In which case, I would strongly suggest saving yourself a butt-load of trouble and flash the MoDaCo rom (you do have recovery installed, don't you? Gawd, I hope so)
MoDaCo is not much different from stock, except it has Google apps and Market pre-installed, and it's missing most of Amazon's "assume the position" software. Besides you'd be hard pressed to find a better "stock" experience anywhere else IMO.

1 Non launcher is your only choice without root
2 no google play store without root
If the apps that you want to sideload from google play is a free app, then it can be done without root using APK Downloader. But that doesn't mean that they will actually work properly on the Ftv.
Thankyou thats exactky the info i was after.
Can i just ask what everyones uses to sideload apps. The original guide was a bit over tge top and then noticed aftv utility and adb fire.
I will also need sonething to move over zip files to allow install of navi x

[Q] Google Play Store Keeps Crashing on Rooted Note 4, What to do?

I have a Sprint Note 4 which is rooted and yesterday I downloaded Lucky Patcher and the Modded Google Play Store to replace my stock Google Play Store. So through Titanium, I backed up the stock Google Play Store and then I uninstalled it, since the Modded Google Play Store would not let me install it without doing that. I also cleared the cache and data on Google Play Store and now it just keeps crashing all the time. When I try to download something, it starts to download and then immediately it crashes and gives me the "Unfortunately, Play Store has stopped working" error. I get the error no matter which version of Play Store I use now, whether it is the modded or the official version. I tried clearing data/cache to Google Play Services as well, to no avail. When I try to restore my backup of Google Play Store through Titanium it stays frozen with "Restoring Google Play Store 5.1.11" and I end up having to force stop Titanium. This is so annoying! What can I do? Thanks so much in advance!!!
1) Go to Application manager/All, scroll down to where you find these three: Google Services Framework, Google Play, and Google Play Services. Force stop and delete cache and data for the first two (in order given). You won't be able to force close Google Play Services but choose Manage storage and scroll to bottom to clear all data. It's annoying that they may try to restart, just clear again and reboot quickly.
2) If that doesn't work, got a nandroid backup?
3) Re-flash current ROM, if no.
4) If stock and no backup, consider another ROM or start over with Odin stock tar.
Note: options 3 and 4 may require clean install.
Note 2: I've tried to suggest from least inconvenience to most; hopefully, the easier methods will do.
Edit: you may also see an option to uninstall update to revert to the original system application; consider that as option 2 or 3 for Google Play.

Ok I just did that now when I run Play Store it doesn't crash, instead it is says " Check your internet connection and try again" It seems as if it isn't recognizing that I actually do have a connection? I heard that if you go to the files on the phone to "etc/hosts" file and put a "#" in front of the second IP address in the hosts file that it will work but I just tried that and it didn't so I reverted the file back.
Also I tried going to settings>accounts and removing my Google accounts and re adding them but Play store still says I have no connection (which I clearly do). I made sure my date/time settings are right as well. This is happening with the modded play store and the official 5.2.12 Play Store.
YouTube randomly crashes now as well and gives me "unfortunately, YouTube has stopped " Google play store is still not recognizing that I am connected. I think I have tried just about anything besides flashing back to the stock ROM
Did you try step one again after swapping the Google Play versions? Worth a try, if you didn't.
One more thing: Lucky Patcher creates an Odex file. You should use the Lucky Patcher option to remove the Odex and restore the original. If you're ROM is deodexed, Titanium may not fix this for you. You can manually check for Odex file as well. Titanium is also useful to check for unneeded dalvik-cache files.
And one last suggestion I omitted: in recovery, delete all cache and dalvik cache and reboot.

Hmmm it is working now after hours of fumbling around with settings. Both the Modded and official newest Google Play Stores started working after I turned off "Google License Verification Emulation" and I had to turn off "Google Billing Emulation". Very stressful lol but they were the default settings and I didn't really want to mess with any of the settings as I am just starting with Lucky Patcher.

Was that Google Play version 5.2.12?
I flashed that to system yesterday and everything was working except that it didn't populate my applications and notify updates until a day later. I had to search for updates that I knew were available. Today, the apps populated and I got update notification for available updates. I think it may be part of the battery savings that lollipop is supposed to be bringing; less Google Play wakes.
Consider that your manipulation results may have been skewed by Google not immediately syncing the update.
As for my experience, I did find myself doing step one and considering flashing the nandroid but waited for applications to sync. They did finally sync this morning. The longer sync of apps may have been induced locally by the use of Xposed module "Recent Apps" which can be configured to force close apps and remove from recents, reducing wake times.

No, it is the Modded Google Play Store version 5.1.11 right now that's working but there's a newer version of it that is out. I'm getting frustrated messing with lucky Patcher (if anyone can help me with the basics of it? that i would greatly appreciate that as well. Last question I have is that in my etc/hosts file and there is a "#" before the second IP address in the etc/hosts file. Anyone know what that "#" is used for in front of the IP in the hosts file? Thanks again!!!

The # is used in scripts to comment out; meaning ignore that line in your host file.
As far as LP, there is a help link to read. Discussion threads on LP may get closed on XDA; LP may be a useful tool but leans toward piracy. Not saying this pertains to you but there was a thread that the developer participated in that xda allowed to remain open with a warning. That should be sufficient, unless closed as well.
Edit: found the thread and warning http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45933638, post 21.

I know, it can be used for illegal purposes which is NOT what I am using it for just to be clear so the post doesn't get deleted because someone thinks I am using it illegally, which I'm not.. anyways, if anyone has any tips on LP id appreciate it thanks!!
Why not go to your time and date and turn off automatic time?
It worked for me!
No more check connection in google play store and youtube not loading
Google Store Crashing but only when rooted.
Why is it that when running stock lollipop 5.1.1 on Galaxy S6 Edge is it that Google Play Store constantly crashes when I'm rooted.
When no root it works fine and dandy.
Soon as rooted the bloody thing crashes constantly..
The only way I managed to keep rooted was to use stock google play store and prevent it from updating.
This I can cope with.. If anyone else has come across this issue and found a better way to fix it please let me know
My note 4 lollipop 5.1.1 device has rooted but fix problem in Google play when I update big file(like no system apps) apps so when it's completely update after start beginning wht can I do it

I deleted my Play Store...and more.

So, I'm quite new at all of this, and I understand now why you shouldn't mess with stuff you don't know about.
Now that that's out of the way, I'll explain my issue. I rooted my tab 3 with kingoroot, which worked perfect, but then I decided to go and use Lucky Patcher, which is when things went bad. I attempted to get the Modded Google Play store, which downloaded, however when it was finished installing, it gave me a message I didn't see, and tapped away from accidentally.(I think it was asking me to reset my device). I then left Lucky Patcher, and realized that Google Play was gone, no mod, or original, and so I reset my device thinking that's what the message may have said to do. Of course, I get back and it's still missing. It's totally gone. Not in applications manager, couldnt find it in my file explorer. I factory reset as well and nothing was solved. I now get messages saying that an application needs me to update Google Play Services..."Which your device does not support.....". So finally I tried 2 things: 1, I downloaded a Google Play store APK, which would open, then promptly close right after, and then announcing that it had failed/closed. I also tried to side-load google play services, which also didn't solve my problem.
Im still rooted with superuser
Now, I've looked everywhere on how to reset my actual android version(without a computer), and all I could find was using ADB to downgrade, then upgrade, which I'd like to avoid using ADB, since that just opens up more possibilities for me to destroy my tablet.
Please help me
good news! you do NOT need google bloat-adware to install apps from the play store.
interweb search: apk mirror
compare hash of apk to developer.
joy
use lucky patcher to render apps offered as free with ads actually free by removing ads

[SOLVED] Is it possible to disable Play Store?

Dear All,
By any chance has any of you succeeded into disabling play store without being root?
It used to be possible on older phones I owned, but I am struggling to find a way to do so on my new RN8PRO option to disable is 'disabled'
I have read many of those threads here, might have missed the solution, please forgive me if I did, would appreciate if you could point me toward the solution.
I also used that java app to debloat phones by uninstalling/disabling what I had no use for and it worked fine with most of the apps, just not play store which was not even listed at all.
Yes I dont use play store, Apps I install I get from other means (F-Droid etc).
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
You can uninstall system apps through ADB / using fastboot.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/themes/adb-fastboot-tools-debloat-safe-list-t4012255
I'm not sure though if it's safe to uninstall play store.
Sounds to me you'd be better of with xiaomi.eu ROM and debloat as much as you like.
I have the 11.0.2.0 Global without Playstore running. Just deactivate or uninstall with adb "com.android.vending".
You can also still debloat the Google Play services "com.google.android.gms" and Google services framework "com.google.android.gsf" but this can cause problems with some apps that require the services.
You can use the Xiaomi ADB Fastboot tool for this, as the previous speaker mentioned. There you can add the apps you want to disable/uninstall via App Manager -> Add apps.
Thanks @donkyshot & @hmarder!
Actually I am using google play services, that's google play store I have no use for.
So what I had to do simply was to Add the app ing App Manager from the Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot app "com.android.vending: Google Play Store" and disable from there (I prefer disabling those stuff to avoid dependencies problems afterward).
When I just get a new device I try to refrain myself from doing too many things I could not easily recover from, more especially If I am not 100% sure I want to keep the device or if I will return it.
That said I would have liked to have that one a bit earlier because from what I read it looks like xiaomi.eu stopped supporting this device right before I got it, and they removed links to ROMs even for stable Android Pie versions, I'll probably never be able to test those later on even If I would have probably liked to.
I'll try to find working links before they all go down....
Thx again for pointing me to the right direction.
Regards,
deleted double post....
